It’s going to be . . .

tight!

First of all, a warm welcome to the 1st Central County Ground for our remaining one-day matches in this season’s NatWest T20 Blast and Royal London One-Day Cup. We go into the second half of our one-day season still in contention to qualify for the knockout stages in both competitions. In the RLODC we might need to win three or all four of our remaining fixtures but I know that is not beyond our side when we play to our potential. The south group has once again been very competitive with any team capable of beating another on any given day. I can’t see the last eight line-up in either tournament being decided until the final round of matches. Our form in the T20 has been more consistent. We started with three wins out of our but then two successive washouts at Lord’s and the Ageas Bowl knocked our momentum a bit. We were then on the wrong end of two close games against Gloucestershire and Kent before 6 www.sussexcricket.co.uk/tickets

bouncing back with a seven-wicket win over Middlesex which was one of our best one-day performances of the season. Any win is a good win is what us coaches reckon and it was also important that we won a game at Hove, where we haven’t won as many times as we’d have liked over the last couple of years. On a T20 night, with the ground full, the support we get here is phenomenal and it makes such a difference, particularly in tight matches. In the second half of the T20 competition spinners tend to play an increasingly important role. We can often play on slow, used pitches where taking the pace

off the ball is crucial and we are fortunate that part of our team is so strong in Danny Briggs and Will Beer. Between them Danny (118) and Will (85) have played more than 200 T20 games and that experience, not to mention their ability to take wickets and squeeze the opposition batsmen in the middle overs, is crucial to our game plan. Because they have played so much they have a good idea of the strengths and weaknesses of a lot of their opponents too. With Luke Wright able to call on Chris Nash’s off breaks as well he has lots of options. Right from the start of T20 in 2003, when I was a player, spin has always been a massive part of our game plan and long may it continue. I hate to single out individuals because it’s a team game and we win and lose together, but I must pay special tribute to Ross Taylor. After nine games he has passed 300 runs in this season’s T20 competition and scored three fifties. I can’t remember, with the possible exception of Mushtaq Ahmed and Murray Goodwin, an overseas player at Sussex who has contributed as consistently in one-day cricket for us as Ross has this season. He has got us over the line in three of our games

Sussex Head Coach Mark Davis assesses our one-day season so far as the NatWest T20 Blast and Royal London One-Day Cup reach a crucial stage

and in others, such as Kent at Canterbury, he put us into position where we should have won. Ross returns to international duty with New Zealand after our home fixture against Hampshire on July 27 and we’re working hard on bringing in a replacement for the second half of the season. By then we will have Mustafizur Rahman over here and part of our bowling attack. I’m sure you are looking forward to seeing ‘Fizz’ in a Sussex shirt after his meteoric rise in the world game over the last 12 months. With him, the raw pace of Tymal Mills and the international experience Chris Jordan and Ajmal Shahzad bring we have an attack which I hope can lead us to success. Finally, a word of thanks to Andy Mackay and his groundstaff team for their hard work this summer. Preparing top quality wickets and practice facilities is challenging enough but, as you know, rain has never been far away in the last few weeks which makes their job even harder. They have literally worked night and day and really pulled out the stops to help us and I’d just like them to know that their efforts are appreciated. We have some mouth-watering one-day games to come in July and August so please get behind Luke and the team as we make one big push for the knockout stages.

Thanks for your support

Sussex have work to do if they are to qualify for the knockout stages in the Royal London OneDay Cup. This season’s campaign has contained some individual highlights though. In our opening fixture against Essex at Hove left-armer George Garton took two wickets, including Ravi Bopara, on his List A debut but despite half-centuries from Ed Joyce (73), Luke Wright (50) and Ross Taylor (50), Sussex lost by five wickets. Our first win in the competition since August 2014 was achieved against Middlesex at Hove in a match reduced to 32 overs. Another youngster, Phil Salt, impressed with 81 off 76 balls before Chris Jordan took 5 for 28 to help seal a 31-run win. Disappointingly, the Sharks were unable to build on this success away from home, losing by 84 runs to Glamorgan and six wickets against Surrey.

Welcome to the second half of our campaigns in the NatWest T20 Blast and Royal London One-Day Cup. Our form in this season’s T20 has been slightly up and down and a little bit the opposite of last year; we have improved our performances at home for the most part but been slightly less spectacular away. We now face four big final matches in the group stages if we are to progress to the Quarter Finals, two of which are at here at Hove so we would all greatly appreciate your support and for you to crank up the noise and get the place rocking! Personally, I’m really happy with how I have performed so far in the competition. I set myself high standards and challenge myself to be the go-to guy that Wrighty looks to and bowl the important overs for the team and get the best batters out. It was a long winter and preseason in terms of all the gym work and training that I put in and only playing T20’s has meant that when it comes to game time I am 100% focused and ready to perform as I have often been waiting all week to play in the match!

14 www.sussexcricket.co.uk/tickets

I sit here writing this now having made my England debut against Sri Lanka at the start of July which was an extremely proud moment of me after all of the problems I have had with my back over the last couple of years and certainly makes my decision to carry on playing, albeit in T20 only worthwhile. I was lucky that I knew most of the England boys and staff previously from various Lions trips and training camps that I have been involved with over the years which made my transition into the squad much easier. It was also nice to walk into a team that is currently so successful after recently beating Sri Lanka in the Test and ODI series, which made the transition that little bit easier. It is safe to say I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the England squad but am slightly gutted that it was just a one match series as it would have been nice to get a few matches under my belt early in my career, but hopefully I can get another go against Pakistan later in the summer! For various reason we’ve had more overseas players in our side that you’d normally expect but all have settled into the squad brilliantly and offered something to the changing room, even if their time with the club has only been short.

Ross Taylor in particular has been fantastic not only on the field but off of it, offering all of the lads advice where and when he can. We can now also (finally) welcome Mustafizur Rahman into the squad which will no doubt be a great addition to our bowling attack. After watching him bowl in the World T20 and IPL I am certainly looking forward to bowling alongside him! Thank you for reading and I hope that you have a great evening and continue your great support throughout the rest of the summer! Please feel free to come and see us all after the game for any autographs and photos that you may like.

The Sharks have put in some good performances on home turf this season and are aiming to secure a place in the knockout stages.

Four wins, two washouts and four defeats left us in third place, and skipper Luke Wright believes three wins from our remaining four matches should secure a quarterfinal place in a group that is as competitive as ever. Ross Taylor (324), Wright (232) and Chris Nash, whose 202 runs included his first T20 hundred against Somerset, have all passed 200 runs in the competition, while England’s newest player Tymal Mills (11) and Ajmal Shahad (10) are our leading wicket-takers. Taylor has made three fifties including a match-winning 93 in the win over Gloucestershire. Sussex have also beaten Somerset, Kent and Middlesex with three wins coming at Hove. Victories at the 1st Central County Ground in the remaining fixtures against Hampshire and Glamorgan will go a long way towards securing our place in the last eight.

A positive spin 24 www.sussexcricket.co.uk/tickets

Spin twins: Danny Briggs and Will Beer took a quarter of Sussex’s wickets between them in the first nine games of this season’s Blast

When T20 started in 2003 most counties didn’t see much of a role for spin bowlers. They were regarded as cannon folder in a format where the only thing which mattered was scoring as many runs as possible. How things change. No team would dream of going into a game these days without at least one slow bowler. Sussex have used three in some of their matches this season with Chris Nash’s more than serviceable off breaks augmenting their principal spinners Danny Briggs and Will Beer. Before the competition was expanded most T20 games were played on fresh pitches. With more fixtures these days the same wicket can sometimes be used for two or three games. Inevitably that means by the third time they are used they have slowed up and bowlers – and in particular those who can take pace off the ball – rather than brawny batsmen with their big blades come to the fore. “It tends to be the case that towards the end of the group stages we play on a few used pitches,” says Briggs, the left-armer who joined Sussex from Hampshire this season. “When that happens spinners should come into their own a bit but you also have to have the confidence to believe you can perform in any conditions or surfaces. You know that batsmen will have to come at you no matter what the conditions, so you have to adapt.” Briggs has done a pretty good

of adapting over the years. The 25-year-old has played seven T20s for England and this summer has maintained the form in the domestic competition which helped Hampshire reach Finals Day for five successive seasons. Against Middlesex last month, he and Beer bowled beautifully in tandem in the middle overs, taking a combined 5 for 47 as Sussex returned to winning ways after their bid for the quarter-finals had been knocked off course by a run of four games without a win. Luke Wright has regularly employed Briggs to bowl the opening over of the innings, but it’s in those middle overs after the power-play when he and Beer tend to come

a quarter-final to look forward to then I’ll be happy. It’s going to be tight though. The South Group has always been competitive but now you have teams like Glamorgan and Gloucestershire who have really improved in T20 in the last couple of years and this season everyone seems capable of beating each other. We know if we’re to get through we need to perform in every game. “The Middlesex win at the start of July was important because it gave us some momentum again. You need to take confidence from every game that you win, especially when the matches are running out.”

Sussex’s slow bowlers are playing a key role in this year’s T20 By Bruce Talbot into their own. “That’s when we try and put the squeeze on,” he said. “Batsmen are always looking to play big shots and sometimes you can disappear out of the ground. But if you can hold your nerve and use your experience you can take wickets because playing big shots always carries an element of risk as well.” We’re now into the business end of the competition, but if you want an assessment of Sussex’s chances of reaching the quarterfinals, then Briggs might not be the best person to ask. “To be honest, I don’t look at the league tables,” he said. “If I get told after the last game that we’ve got

PUTTING A SPIN ON IT Did you know that three of Sussex’s ten best bowling performances in T20 have been by spinners: 1. Mushtaq Ahmed (5-11 v Essex, 2005) 2. Ollie Rayner (5-18 v Somerset, 2011) 3. Michael Rippon (4-23 v Kent, 2012). www.sussexcricket.co.uk/tickets 25

Liam Dawson’s solid form is holding Hampshire’s one-day season together and has earned him a first England call-up

Liam Dawson’s consistent form with the white ball earned him his first England call-up last month

26 www.sussexcricket.co.uk/tickets

Liam Dawson’s impressive England debut against Sri Lanka was a welcome fillip for a Hampshire side struggling to reproduce the form that made them one of the strongest one-day units in the last few years. They will arrive at Hove for the T20 clash against the Sharks with their proud record of having qualified for the last five Finals Days under serious threat. After nine games they had claimed just one victory with six defeats including five in a row which have virtually ended their chances of making the quarter-finals. Two washouts didn’t help either, including one at the Ageas Bowl last month when the groundstaff were caught out by a sudden downpour and water got onto the wicket. Dawson, though, continues to produce consistent performances in all three formats and went into their last five games as leading run scorer and wicket taker. The 26-year-old from Wiltshire, a former England under-19 captain, has a strike rate of 108.23 in T20 cricket and his left-arm spinners have brought him 46 wickets. But with Hampshire struggling in all three formats going into the second half of the season, Dawson admits that confidence in the camp is low. He said: “We are struggling a bit in four-day cricket but my one-day

cricket is going brilliantly so it is a little bit of give and take. “It is obviously an exciting time for me, potentially I could make my England debut at my home ground which would be a very special moment.” In the Royal London One-Day Cup, Hampshire have made a slightly better start in the South Group with two wins from four starts ahead of the resumption of the competition which sees them take on Kent on July 26 before heading to Hove for a day-night encounter the following day. One of those defeats came in a run fest against champions Gloucestershire at Bristol when Hampshire got within ten runs of the home side’s massive total of 352 for 8. Dawson scored his seventh half-century in nine List A innings as 694 runs were scored, a new record for a one-day match at Bristol. It’s that consistency that alerted the England selectors with Dawson hoping to emulate team-mate James Vince, who has made his international debut this summer.

Kent captain Sam Northeast is frustrated with his side’s inconsistent one-day form

Consistent: Joe Denly had scored 435 one-day runs at the halfway stage of the season

30 www.sussexcricket.co.uk/tickets

could do better

Kent captain Sam Northeast has been left frustrated by the inconsistency that has dogged the Spitfires in one-day cricket this season. Having topped the South Group last season, Kent won just two of their first nine games in the NatWest T20 Blast to leave them struggling to qualify for the knockout stages. Two wins out of four in the Royal London One-Day Cup left them fifth at the halfway stage and better placed in the 50 overs competition so both sides could have a lot to play for when they meet in the final group game at the start of August. But having performed so consistently in white-ball cricket last season, Northeast admits he is struggling to explain why a side which on paper looks to have a nice blend of youth and experience has performed below expectations. The games against Sussex and Essex in the T20 at the start of the month offered a neat microcosm of their season so far. In front of the Sky TV cameras, and with South African quick Kagiso Rabada working up an impressive head of steam at the start of his month-long stint with the county, Kent won by ten runs after defending a total of 166 and Rabada took two wickets. But the following night Essex racked up 205 at Chelmsford and won by 50

runs. Northeast admitted: “Things are not going well for us at the moment. If we perform like we did against Sussex we are a match for anyone but against Essex people were constantly getting out at wrong times and there was a bit of a lack of intent. “There are things we need to look at. We’re a bit short in certain areas.” The absence of Daniel BellDrummond during the middle part of the T20 campaign was a serious blow to the Spitfires. It’s not just in Kent that the 22-year-old is being talked of as a future England player. In the first two months of the season he racked up nearly 1,200 runs in all competitions before being sidelined by hand injury. Not that Bell-Drummond is allowing himself to dream of playing for his country just yet. He said: “I’ve ridden my luck at times and batted really well at times. I’m just very grateful it’s happened. I just want to keep my head down and keep my form up for myself and the team.” “I haven’t heard anything. I wasn’t really expecting to. A few people have said a few nice things to me. It’s an honour to think that people are banging my drum because it shows how well I’ve done. “My dream is to play for England one day but I’ve got to keep scor-

ing runs – I’ve only done it consistently for these three months just gone. I’m just desperate to keep my form going and try to score runs for Kent and keep pushing for higher honours.”

Glamorgan are well placed to improve on their modest one-day record of recent years.

Colin Ingram is spearheading Glamorgan’s challenge for one-day honours this season

32 www.sussexcricket.co.uk/tickets

Colin Ingram has played a vital role in Glamorgan’s impressive one-day form this season

At the halfway stage of their T20 campaign, they had recorded five wins from seven games – including a double over Surrey – and are setting the pace in the South Group along with Gloucestershire. Meanwhile, they won three of their first four games in the Royal London One-Day Cup to sit in second place. Glamorgan have only reached the knockout stages of the T20 once since their only appearance at Finals Day in 2004 but from the moment they defeated Surrey at The Oval on opening night they have gained in confidence. And in South African batsman Colin Ingram, they have a player who is in prime form. The 31-year-old left-hander’s purple patch began with a quick-fire 64 in Glamorgan’s victory against Gloucestershire at Bristol on June 10th. He followed that up two days later with an unbeaten 95 which steered Glamorgan to an impressive win against Kent in the Royal London One-Day Cup. Two days later, Ingram made 85 against Middlesex in the 50 overs match at The SSE SWALEC before bludgeoning 60 in their T20 win over the Kent Spitfires in Cardiff. The former Somerset player then hit an unbeaten 73 from 49 balls as Glamorgan defeated Surrey by nine wickets to complete the T20 double.

His consistency has only been matched by two Glamorgan players in the county’s one-day history. Steve James notched up a sequence of 82, 75, 54, 93* and 90 in 1995 and current coach Robert Croft posted 77, 67, 50, 59 and 50 in five successive matches during 1998. Ingram, who has recovered from an early-season knee injury, has also chipped in with seven one-day wickets with his leg spin. “It’s been nice to contribute with the ball, I thoroughly enjoy turning my arm over every now and again and it’s been coming out well. The guys are in a good space at the moment and it’s great to be contributing,” he said. Proof of Ingram’s all-round value to the side came when he took an acrobatic catch to get rid of Sharks’ skipper Luke Wright as Glamorgan eased to victory in the Royal London One-Day Cup in June. At the time he was captaining the side with Jacques Rudolph struggling with an arm injury. “With coming back from injury I haven’t been as fit as I would like, but I really do enjoy my fielding and if you seek out opportunities in the field and you look forward to it, you can change the game,” added Ingram. “And I like to think I’m a pretty whole-hearted cricketer. “I think when things are going well and you’re hitting it nicely you

just want to play as much as you can and ride the wave. I’m looking forward to the challenges over the next few weeks. There’s still a lot of hard work to be done but the guys have shown a great deal of character to get stuck in and string a few wins together.” South African Dale Steyn took 11 T20 wickets during his brief stint with the county but he has been replaced for the second half of Glamorgan’s one-day campaign by Shaun Tait, which will mean no loss of firepower in their new-ball attack.
