Jackie Hoare and Lisa Priestman report on the resumption of Safe and Well home visits from West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and Home Safety Visits from East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service
East and West Sussex Fire & Rescue Services have restarted their free Safe and Well Visits and Home Safety Visits in a faceto-face format, while still working within a Covid-19 safe manner. For some time, visits had been carried out virtually, but the lifting of restrictions means the fire service can now resume visiting people in their homes.
A Safe and Well Visit or Home Safety Visit involves a prearranged home visit, to offer advice on how to make the home safer, and where appropriate fit smoke alarms or other specialist fire detection equipment. Visits are free of charge and tailored to the specific needs of the household. They normally last between 30 to 45 minutes. The fire service personnel who carry out the visit will always bring identification.
Visits are offered to individuals within our communities who are most in need. You may be eligible if you: • Are aged 65 or over • Are a lone adult/parent with young children • Live in a high-rise building • Have a permanent disability • Have permanent mobility difficulties • Have a Careline/Lifeline • Cannot hear a standard smoke alarm and live alone
