Can volunteering really improve your mental health and employability? It is no secret that volunteering your time and energy benefits the chosen organisation, association or group enormously, but did you know that volunteering will also boost your mental health and make you more appealing to potential employers? Amy Henkel, a Beaver Scout leader from Sussex explains how the simple act of volunteering at her son’s Beavers group provided her with a new lease of life after the struggles she experienced during the Covid pandemic. A study published in the international peerreviewed Journal of Happiness Studies found that people who volunteered were actually more satisfied with their lives versus those who didn’t volunteer. Those who reported volunteering at least once a month experienced improved mental health benefits. “I can personally vouch for this” says Amy. “I started the year incredibly stressed following the demands of home schooling while maintaining my career, but volunteering helped me find an outlet where fun and enjoyment were key.” Amy says that Scouting is very active and working with youngsters will definitely keep you fit both mentally and Beaver Scouts on a hike physically. “With Beavers starting at six years of age and Scouts going up to age 14 you can be assured that this is an active and ener- Jubilee camp getic volunteering opportunity. From hiking to pioneering, fire lighting to camping, astronomy to kayaking the breadth of scouting is only as narrow as your imagination!” Currently one of the Storrington Scouts groups may be forced to close, leaving 14 young people without a group.
