THAKEHAM HELPS SAVE THE PLANET –AND A POTENTIAL £60,000!

Imagine, if you can, 38 massive hot air balloons floating in the sky above the small village of Thakeham in West Sussex. That image represents the huge amount of CO2 saved by the community in the first phase of their Greening Thakeham campaign. This first phase of Greening Thakeham encouraged households to help reduce CO2 emissions –and other waste –by undertaking a number of easily achievable tasks, such as turning down the thermostat one degree, turning off standby’s or using low-energy bulbs. The households who achieved five such challenges then displayed the Greening Thakeham logo in their windows, so that the annual CO2, water and money savings made by the community could be calculated. An amazing 38.7 tonnes of CO2 were saved, along with 80,955 litres of water, not to mention total financial savings of over £7,500. Had every single household achieved the challenges (and being the summer holidays it is not surprising that not

everyone did), the savings would have been enormous : over 300,000 tonnes of CO2; 640,000 litres of w a t e r ; a n d around £60,000. All in a small, rural village. The Greening Thakeham committee are now planning Phase Two of the campaign, which will be a more ambitious initiative for long term energy saving in the village. Residents of Thakeham are being encouraged to suggest ideas and to get involved in what promises to be a really exciting project. Well done Thakeham and here’s to Phase Two!
