How long have you lived in Fiveways? Nearly four years. What do you like about living here? The people. How quiet it is at night. Carol singing in Blakers Park at Christmas time. Hot cross buns from Ravens Bakery on Good Friday. How did you come to found the Starboard Festival? The idea was sparked at the opening gala for BOAT (Brighton Open Air Theatre) in May last year. The BOAT was built after local theatre-maker Adrian Bunting was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He gave his life savings to his best friends and asked them to build an open-air theatre in the city. After two years of hard work, last year it opened in Dyke Road Park. Listening to Adrian Bunting’s mother and his friends describe the incredible story behind the creation of BOAT I felt moved to do something to build on their success.

Not only is the story behind BOAT so inspiring, but also the space itself is magical, a theatre-maker’s dream. I wanted to do something that would enable children and young people in the city to discover this magic for themselves and for BOAT to become part of their psycho-geography of the city. So I held open meetings at the BOAT to test the potential of the idea and over

fiveways Interesting exhibition at Preston Manor...

WITCHCRAFT COLLECTION AT PRESTON MANOR One of Britain’s spookiest historic houses, Preston Manor, is to host a unique display of artefacts and documents from the personal collection of local witch Doreen Valiente from 2nd April until the autumn. Doreen Valiente (1922-1999) is internationally regarded as having been ‘the mother of modern witchcraft’, and played a key part in nurturing the modern Pagan revival. In 2013 she posthumously made history by being the first witch to be awarded a blue plaque commemorating her life and achievements, on her tower block home in Kemp Town. Her collection of artefacts, manuscripts and documents relating to witchcraft, magic, folklore and Paganism is 9 acknowledged by academics to be the most important of its kind in the world. On her death it was entrusted to her last High Priest, John Belham-Payne, now chair of the Doreen Valiente Foundation, who has worked extensively on safeguarding it for the future. Folklore, Magic and Mysteries: Modern Witchcraft and Folk Culture in Britain will include ceremonial items, statues and a witch’s altar, which will change with the seasons and contain genuine witchcraft working tools and historical artefacts.

On display on special days during May and July will be Gerald Gardner’s original handwritten book of witchcraft rituals, from the 1940s - one of the primary source documents for the worldwide religion now known as Wicca. Known as a ‘Book of Shadows’ it contains Gardner’s notes for rituals and magical work from the earliest days of this movement. Most modern witches now have their own ‘Book of Shadows’, with a great many based on this original work. Preston Manor is open from 10am to 5pm (Tuesday to Saturday) and 2-5pm on Sundays. “Open House arranged all the marketing and viewings quickly and effectively. They did everything that a high street agent offers, but for a much more reasonable fee. In fact they sold my house 3 times over! The experience felt like a friend was selling my house, not an agent only interested in money. They were a joy to deal with and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again. Highly recommended!.” Jon and Lucy *Based on average agents fees of 1.5%

fiveways News from the chairman of the Local Action Team...

KEEPING OUR CHILDREN SAFE One of the key issues raised at Local Action Team meetings are people’s concerns about safe parking. It is not just blocking corners of course. Brighton and Hove City Council has gone to considerable lengths to ensure safe zones around schools. These stretches of road were the first in the city to be made 20mph zones, and zig-zag markings were painted here, making it unlawful to stop at any time during the school day, between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, in these zones. Outside one school at present, there is even a banner paid for by the council that highlights the danger to road users of parking in these areas when dropping children 15 off or picking them up. Unfortunately though, some schools don’t seem to agree with the council on this issue, and prefer instead to use their zig-zags on a regular basis as a coach park! What makes it worse is that this illegal parking often occurs at the busiest time of the school day – in the morning, when pupils are arriving, and then again at pick-up time in the afternoon. This makes life more hazardous for all road users.

Surely safety, rather than convenience, should be the main concern of schools? David Alderton The Fiveways Directory is happy to publish views on local issues. This doesn’t mean it either agrees or disagrees with subjects covered. If you live locally and want to express a different viewpoint, please email us at info@fivewaysdirectory.co.uk

fiveways It’s that time of the year again...

BRIGHTON MARATHON – 17TH APRIL This year’s Brighton Marathon takes place on Sunday 17th April. Volunteers are needed to help with a wide variety of roles and you can register to volunteer at: http://www.brightonmarathon.co.uk/volunteer. Volunteering at Brighton Marathon Weekend can be extremely rewarding – it’s a chance to meet new people and have fun. The deadline to sign up is 10th April. There will be some road closures during the Marathon morning. The Marathon Mass Start in Preston Park is at 9.15am, with the elite runners starting in Withdean Park. The Marathon will be preceded by a 10k race, starting at 8.30am, and there will also be Cancer Research UK 17 Kids & Teens Mini Mile Races in Preston Park on Saturday 16th April between 11am and 4pm, with over 2,000 children expected to take part. Both the men’s and women’s champions from 2015 are returning to the race this year. Last year Duncan Maiyo of Kenya took the men’s title in 2:10:15, while in the women’s race his compatriot Penninah Wanjiru won her debut marathon in 2:34:25. (The men’s course record is 2:09:25 and the women’s course record is 2:28:50.) If you want to see the end of the race, the first elite run-

ners are expected to finish in Madeira Drive at around 11.25 and you can cheer them on from a grandstand situated directly by the finish line, which will be filled on a first come, first served basis. There will be a charity village on the beach, where charities can greet their runners, with live screens, food, drink, entertainment and, of course, deckchairs! A programme of public engagement on possible ways of changing Brighton & Hove’s secondary school admissions system is under way. The need for change has been triggered by rising demand for secondary school places, and also by the University of Brighton’s proposal to create a new secondary free school in the eastern central area of the city. This year will be the fifth year of our pop-up site The Warren, which sees Otherplace take over St Peter’s Church North for the whole of May. It features a total of four venues, a rooftop bar, kids area and stalls by local traders, and will be the setting for more than 150 shows, making it our biggest year to date. In addition to the Theatre Box (a studio theatre made out of four shipping containers joined together), we now have a 250-seat, bowler-hat shaped Main House, and two new smaller studio venues. host a programme that spans theatre, comedy, cabaret, dance, opera, spoken word, music and film. We are open from 5 May to 5 June. Can you tell us about some of the shows we can see there in May? One of the highlights of the Fringe this year is El Blanco: Tales of the Mariachi. El Blanco, aka The White One, struggles with being too white but manages to overcome his insecurities through songs based on Mexican myth, ancient Egypt and, er, George Clooney. A hilarious and unpredictable script for a ridiculously entertaining night of songs, stories and many, many lies, I am really looking forward to seeing this show. (May 6 - 8, 6.30pm, £10 / Conc £8.50 / Student £7) Other programme highlights include last year’s major hit The Biggest Marionette Circus in the World Part II, which returns for 13 dates; all four parts of the multi-awardwinning Bane series; an all-new operatic show The Pirates of Penzance, from the riotous team behind sellout Sh*tfaced Shakespeare; and a preview by cabaret superstar La Gateau Chocolat. How can we find out more and get tickets? The Fringe programme is online and you can pick up a brochure from outlets around the town. www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk Box office: 01273 987516 The Warren, St Peter’s Place North, York Place, Brighton, BN1 4GU 5 May – 5 June COMPETITION: WIN TICKETS!! QUIZ QUESTION SIX:

Which hills divide England from Scotland?

fiveways Welcome to the April edition of Fiveways Gardens....

FIVEWAYS GARDENS APRIL 2016 Silver-leafed shrubs such as lavenders, sage and Santolina should be cut to within 15-30cm of the ground if you have young plants that you want to keep compact. Just check that you can see new buds emerging on the lowest stems. If you have older woody plants that you want to try to revive, a good technique worth trying is to cut them back pretty hard, into the old wood, and then mound good compost on top of them. If you’ve tall perennials that needed staking last year, it’s a good idea to put supports in place now, before the plants really get going. This way, the plants grow up through supports and disguise them, and look better than plants that have been propped up once they’ve 27 been wind-battered. Climbing honeysuckle, or Lonicera, can be prone to powdery mildew infection – there seemed to be quite a bit of it about last year. As so many of us have and love this plant, it’s worth mentioning how we can better look after them this year. Powdery mildew is often caused by drought stress. Even when it seems to be raining quite a bit, we have to bear in mind that most of us have very freely draining, chalky soil, that dries out quickly. Given that most honeysuckles are planted at the foot of a wall, in particularly poor soil, and are sheltered from a lot of

the rain, you can see how plants get drought stressed. To help prevent this, put a good 7-10cm mulch of organic matter around the base to conserve moisture and condition the soil. Adding some blood, fish and bone and/ or chicken pellet fertiliser to encourage strong growth and lots of flowers will also help, as nutrients are quickly washed away in our soil. This should be an annual job, and will benefit all wall-trained climbers. The new shoots are prone to aphid attack – spotting this quickly and spraying regularly with a weak dilution of washing up liquid usually solves the problem. Happy gardening Lisa

QUIZ QUESTION SEVEN :

Which flower does the spice SAFFRON come from?

fiveways Spring is finally here, and with it, the buds of two exciting new projects here at Coachwerks have finally appeared...

NEW PROJECTS AT COACHWERKS Thanks to funding from Upstream Ideas, ‘The Bottle Room’ is set to open its doors at the beginning of May. We all know the planet is under increasing environmental pressure, and we all try to do our bit to ease the load. But as Kermit the Frog once sang, it’s not easy being green. So ‘The Bottle Room’ is here to help. We’ll be running workshops, holding drop-in sessions, offering advice and practical support on everything from food growing to cycling, setting up a coop to fixing up old furniture, and generally doing what we can to help us all reduce our footprint on the planet. We’re also looking for volunteers and ideas to help the project grow, and we also want to help you with ideas or projects of your own. For further information or to sign up to our email list, 31please email us at greenhands@riseup.net And after a hard day tending to your veg, retro-fitting your home, or cycling to and from work, you might want to relax with a pint or two of the most local and sustainable beer you could imagine. Bartleby’s, your very own local brewery here at Coachwerks, have teamed up with EarthSea, so you can now pop in and add a litre (or more) of beer to your scoop-and-weigh rice and locally grown veg. We have 1, 5, 10 and 20 litre containers, all fully returnable and re-usable, and you’re more than

welcome to bring your own containers too. We’ll always have at least three ales in stock, and we’ll be offering free home delivery in the local area for sales of 10 litres or more. You can place orders in the shop, or on-line at www.bartlebysbrewery.com… Needless to say, we’ll be delivering to you on our trusty bike, so it will still be the lowest impact beer you’re likely to find. As ever, if you’d like more info about what’s going on at Coachwerks, please email rachelmaryentwistle@gmail.com to sign up to our email list. We’ve also got a new website... coachwerks.org, so check that out too...

fiveways Regular fitness advice from local personal trainer Marianne Clark...

STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHT TO RUN (26.2 MILES) Marathon season is upon us again. You’ll probably have noticed the constant stream of runners beating a path up Ditchling Road in pursuit of a pair of legs strong enough to carry them round 26.2 miles. The Brighton Marathon is only a few years old but has already become one of the UK’s “must-do” races. Last year there were 18,000 entries for the Brighton Marathon, and since it began the gender split of runners has been fairly constant at around 36% women to 64% men. Not quite an equal showing of men and women yet, but not so far off considering that it is only relatively recently that women have been permitted to race that distance. Did you know, for instance, that it was 1984 before the women’s marathon first became an Olympic 35 event? Previously the longest Olympic event for women was the 800m (less than half a mile), longer events being considered just too arduous for the girls. American Joan Benoit won the inaugural Olympic event, in a time of 2 hours and 25 minutes, demonstrating quite clearly that women were more than capable of taking on the challenge. The current women’s marathon record of 2 hours 15 minutes set by Paula Radcliffe has stood since 2003; few have even come close since. RUN YOURSELF FIT!

Photo of Kathrine Switzer by Joan McCullough

The oldest continuously staged race is the iconic Boston marathon which began in 1897. For over seven decades it was an entirely male preserve and the organisers unapologetically refused to accept female entrants. As the American feminist movement gathered steam during the 1960s, a small group of women began to challenge their exclusion and a few even managed to compete in the race unofficially. However, it was news photographs of the Boston race organisers attempting to physically drag “illegal” runner Kathrine Switzer off the course in 1967 that really had an impact on the public consciousness and paved the way for the gender inequalities in sport to be seriously addressed. In 1973 the Boston Marathon finally accepted entries from female athletes for the first time. So, whether or not you believe it is utter madness to choose to run such a distance (without so much as a quick stop-off at Fiveways for coffee and cake), just remember that people fought for your right to take on the challenge of the hallowed 26.2 miles!! Marianne Clark is a personal trainer, GB age group triathlete, and running & endurance sports coach and offers personal training, run groups and 1-2-1 run and triathlon coaching for all levels from beginners upwards. fiveways Your monthly book review by BBC reviewer Gary Mepsted...

RICEYMAN STEPS BY ARNOLD BENNETT WHEN I WAS OLD BY GEORGES SIMENON Life sabotaged my attempts to review a book last month and so I’m back this month with two titles which I urge you to check out. The first is a novel, “Riceyman Steps”, by Arnold Bennett. Bennett is an author who has been rather neglected over the last decade 37 or so. It’s possible to encounter well-read folk who’ve either not heard of him, or who have not read him. Riceyman Steps is one of the great London novels, a Modernist masterpiece that Virginia Woolf, had she been less snobbish and blinkered, might have been proud to have penned. Riceyman Steps won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction in 1923 and tells the story of Henry Earlforward, a shabby Clerkenwell bookseller, and his wife, Violet, who devote their lives to the saving of money. By contrast, their maid, Elsie, is warm, vibrant and life-affirming. From what might appear bleak and unpromising material, Bennett fashions a darkly compelling tale of wasted opportunities. The novel is written in a subtly poetic and rather beautiful style which makes reading it such a pleasure. Bennett presents his characters without judging them and without asking the reader to judge them. London in the 1920s is powerfully evoked and wonderfully rendered. The novel is gloriously, and occasionally claustrophobically, immersive. Bennett’s consummate ability to handle, and deploy, language is a skill that most contemporary

novelists singularly lack. I recommend this novel most highly. Check on Amazon for best deals. Georges Simenon’s autobiographical notebooks have recently earned themselves a thoroughly justified reprint as a Penguin Classic. Famous for his Maigret novels, Simenon’s phenomenal output - he could write a novel in a fortnight - and his prodigious tally of sexual conquests are probably, and unfortunately, what he is best remembered for. Simenon was an extraordinary writer, a superb chronicler of the human heart and mind. Many of his novels, “The Blue Room”, “The Man Who Watched Trains Go By” and “Sunday”, are miniature masterpieces. “When I Was Old” scrupulously details Simenon’s working methods, his observations and experiences, his relationships and his fears of ageing. There is nothing apologetic or self-serving here, just a ruthless desire to be honest. This is a man having an almost Socratic dialogue with himself. You do not need to have read Simenon’s fiction to find his thoughts and recollections fascinating; they speak of the most basic human fears and desires. Not always a comfortable read, but a salutary one. (Penguin Classics, £8.99)

fiveways Another fascinating story from the Royal Pavilion.....

PAVILION BLUES: DISABILITY AND IDENTITY This tale of adversity and opportunity is revealed through photographs, poetry and objects from the Pavilion Military Hospital, as well as insights into the lives and experiences of three patients. From 20th April there will also be panels in five of the Royal Pavilion’s rooms giving information on this moving story.

The Royal Pavilion as a World War One military hospital

Kevin Bacon of the Royal Pavilion writes: “The Royal Pavilion’s use as a hospital for wounded Indian soldiers is well known. Its use as a hospital for

limbless men is less famous. It opened in the summer of 1916, and retained many of the same medical personnel who had run the Indian hospital. It continued to care for men who had lost arms and legs in World War One until 1920, when the Pavilion was returned to the Brighton Corporation. “The contrast with the earlier hospital is striking: the primary focus of the Indian hospital was to make the men fit enough to either return to the front or be invalided back to India. Although the men were celebrated for their bravery in combat, little official concern seems to have been given to what happened to those men who returned home. By contrast, the hospital for limbless men was established with the aim of equipping its patients with new skills with which to rebuild their lives. “A workshop named after Queen Mary was constructed on the northern grounds of the Pavilion, where the patients could learn new skills in carpentry and engineering. But it was not all about work: the men were also given a good deal of leisure time, and sports were regularly enjoyed. “Cricket, and the old Sussex game of stoolball, were popular in the hospital. As with the Paralympics today, technology was used to enable the men to take part in these sports. Football may have been amongst the other sports played.” Brighton Museum & Art Gallery is open from 10am until 5pm (closed on Mondays) and the display ends on 20th November. fiveways This is the first in a series of articles looking at the superstitions of old Sussex...

SUSSEX SUPERSTITIONS – SHAPE-SHIFTING Until 100 or so years ago some people, especially those living in rural areas, believed that a human with special powers could change into an animal. There are references to this as far back as the 12th century and it was mentioned frequently by witnesses in the 18th century. The hare was a great favourite of the witches. It was thought that, in the form of hares, they sucked cows’ udders in the night, leaving them dry for the morning’s milking. Sometimes they were held responsible for damage to crops. One old lady – so it was said - could change into a hare and often roamed attended by her own dogs – her ‘familiars’ perhaps. On one occasion, just by her cottage, a farmer’s dogs managed to bite the hare’s behind but then the fleeing animal slipped away down a cottage drain. When the farmer burst into the cottage, there was the old lady, in human form. There was no sign of any hare, though the farmer noticed that she was rubbing her behind. Another time – and this is a creepy kind of tale – a man related how a cat was constantly coming into his garden and causing havoc. He seemed to think that this invasion always occurred when his wife went ashopping or a-visiting. One day, tired of the nuisance, the man took out his rifle and shot the cat in the leg. Shortly after this his wife came home from market and she was limping. She explained it away by telling him that she had fallen down. Poor chap, was this another example of a shape-changing witch being injured in her guise of an animal? first animal that crossed their path upon their leaving home, would turn back, regarding it as a warning.’ WH Johnson is the author of The Superstitions and Curious Beliefs of Old Sussex, an e-book available from Amazon.

Such stories have the feel of rural myth about them and accounts of animals and injured witches are common throughout the British Isles and beyond into Europe and they were believed not only by the uneducated. A vicar’s wife wrote in her diary in the 1870s: ‘I have met with even educated persons who, if a hare were the
