She is currently cycling around the UK with the all-female HandleBards, to perform Shakespeare plays. How long have you lived in Fiveways? For the last nine years. Did you begin acting at school? I have always wanted to be an actor ever since I can remember; this was encouraged by my wonderful teachers at Dorothy Stringer High School, Sussex Downs College, then I trained professionally at East 15 Acting School. We sadly have no plans to as yet; our tour of the country starts in London and travels up the country all the way to Coupar Angus. I’d love to take the shows back to Brighton though; I think they’d go down very well with the Brighton audience! What are your plans for next year? Pencilled in provisionally to tour internationally with the HandleBards, Australia and Asia, which is very exciting indeed!

A LIFE CELEBRATED One thing is a given – we will all die. Funerals in the UK have traditionally been steeped in religion, with many funeral traditions dating back to Victorian behaviours and traditions – and some of these continue today. How we celebrate a life at death in an increasingly secular, non-religious world is changing rapidly. There are almost no rules about what to do – for example, there is no rule about even having a funeral, using a funeral director, a hearse and so on. While some people who are not religious choose to stay with the old traditions, including familiar hymns and prayers, others want to introduce, sometimes with help, creative new and different ways to say goodbye 15 that may become the funeral traditions of the future. Some want a combination of the old and the new, or to have some spiritual but non-religious component. We have freedom to make up any number of new rituals and customs. I am privileged in my job as a civil celebrant to be invited into local families’ worlds at the most critical time to support them as they think through and plan their own, unique ways to celebrate and commemorate the lives of their person who has died. The opportunity to hear the stories of lives lived in many different ways is humbling, fascinating, challenging, uplifting. Sometimes these are long lives, lived in Brighton and Hove during and post-war, others are lives not yet lived of babies and children, of lives lived through illness, and of lives ended unexpectedly through accident or suicide. Turning those stories, together with the family, into a celebration of life that allows the families and friends left living with lasting, accurate memories of the lives of those loved has to be one of the most rewarding jobs possible. Catherine Duffy is a Fiveways resident. She is a civil celebrant who helps individuals and families to celebrate life’s great events: funerals, weddings, new family namings and adoption.

BE AFRAID. BE VERY AFRAID… Something terrifying popped into my inbox recently. I’m on Penguin Books’ mailing list and I regularly receive their press releases giving information on forthcoming titles. The cause of my extreme anxiety is that coming to a bookshop near you on September 20th is a book called The Bestseller Code. The authors, Jodie Archer and Matthew Jockers, claim to have created an algorithm to explain, and perhaps create, bestselling novels such as Fifty Shades of Grey, Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. Having spoken in the recent past about most contemporary novels reading as though they’ve been created by activating a couple of lines of computer 17 code, I now see myself as some kind of modern day Nostradamus, having predicted a likely literary apocalypse resulting in the death of the novel. This particular algorithm uses, so the authors claim, sophisticated text mining techniques which analyse the components of plot, style, character, etc to explain why certain manuscripts contain that elusive, alchemical quality which enables them to resonate so powerfully, and palpably, with readers - and, much to the delight of the bean-counters who care not a fig for the quality of the writing, shift millions of units. Can the era of the designer book be too far away? Will we be able, in the near future, to order up a novel like we can order up a pizza, choosing our own particular textual toppings: extra sex, violence, romance, elves and dragons, cuddly animals, etc? I have found myself wondering, since reading the press release, how many classic texts would fare under the baleful scrutiny of Archer and Jockers’ algorithm (Jude the Obscure: much too bleak; unlikeable central character; unhappy ending), and whether that unique and magical creativity which sparks the author’s imagination might be about to become redundant, rather like Betamax videos or accurate train timetables. Isn’t creativity, I naively ask myself, akin to love,
something it’s probably best not to know too much about for fear of destroying it. I confess, I’m scared. The ‘perfect’ novel would be a dull thing indeed. As with humans, it’s our faults and failings, our striving to be better which makes us interesting, which signals that we are truly alive. I’ll read The Bestseller Code when it’s out but, for now, a line from Thomas Gray’s poem Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College is looping in my head: Where ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise.

FIVEWAYS GARDEN - AUGUST 2016 At this time of year, our gardens can begin to look tired. Early in the morning is a lovely time to potter though, doing a bit of watering and dead-heading. water – vital if you have fish. If you’re lucky enough to have water lilies, remove decaying leaves as they can create an oily film on your pond.

If you’re going away for more than a few days, try to move all your container plants into the shadiest bit of your garden, ideally sitting in a tray of water. Pots that are too big to move will benefit from a good soak before you go away, and a gravel mulch over the top of the soil to lock in the moisture. Consider creating some temporary shade for them while you’re away, by using your outdoor furniture, for example. It really makes a difference.
General - Now’s a good time to trim back hedges, evergreen and deciduous. Remember, if practical, it’s best to use secateurs on the larger leaved shrubs such as Aucuba or spotted laurel. Shears or hedge trimmers will leave lots of half-leaves that will brown and look grotty. A few minutes dead-heading and cutting back tattylooking plants is well worth the effort. Also, remember to feed container plants and keep an eye out for vine weevil. Blackfly seems rife right now, and if you’re not squeamish these can be squashed. Alternatively spray with a solution of washing up liquid, as the blackfly and greenfly won’t like it, but it does minimal damage to other insects, like bees and moths. If you feel spraying with insecticide is the answer, always avoid spraying directly onto flowers and only spray leaves. This way, you can minimise the effect on pollinators. Happy gardening. Lisa

GLUTEN FREE CHERRY COCONUT SLICE These slices have a buttery shortbread base paired with sweet fresh cherries and gooey frangipane making this recipe a firm summer favourite. Ingredients For the shortbread layer: 120g butter 180g plain gluten-free flour 60g caster sugar For the frangipane layer: 150g butter 150g caster sugar 3 eggs 150g ground almonds 150g desiccated coconut ½ teaspoon almond essence For the filling and topping: half a jar of cherry conserve 30g flaked almonds 150g fresh cherries, halved and pitted

They are perfect to pack up if you are out and about this summer… Hopefully we will get some picnic weather! Method • Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a 9×13 inch baking pan with non-stick baking paper. • To make the crumbly shortbread base, mix together the butter, flour and sugar in a large bowl until it forms a dough. Press the dough into your lined tray, prick it all over with a fork and bake for 15 minutes, until golden brown all over. • Turn the oven down to 165°C/150°C fan oven, leave the shortbread to cool and make the frangipane. Beat together the butter and sugar for a full two minutes, until pale and fluffy. Add the eggs, ground almonds, coconut and almond essence, mix until smooth and all the ingredients are combined.

• Spread the cherry conserve over the shortbread, making sure you reach the edges. • Place spoonfuls of the frangipane over the jam and spread the mixture to cover the jam. • Dot the fresh halved cherries over the surface and sprinkle with the flaked almonds. • Cook in the middle of the oven at 165°C/150°C fan oven for about 35-40 minutes or until a skewer inserted comes out clean. If the top is starting to get too brown and the middle is not cooked, place some tin foil over the top of the mixture. • Leave in the tin to cool for 10 minutes then lift out of the tin using the paper, place on a board and cut into slices. • Enjoy with a cuppa! On the weekend of 20-21 August (10am to 7pm), the Brighton Thai Festival brings two days of Thai culture to Preston Park. You can challenge your taste buds and feast your eyes on world class food and performances. Unwind with a traditional Thai massage and don’t miss the spectacular boxing demonstrations and the amazing Lady Boy show. There will also be the return of the popular “I’m British, get me out of here” eating competition. The festival starts with a traditional food offering to Buddhist monks, and entertainment throughout the day includes traditional music and dancing, Thai beer garden, Thai food and produce stalls, and children’s play area. TRIATHLON SPECIAL We are lucky to have many fantastic sporting events in Brighton, but on 11 September the inaugural Brighton & Hove Triathlon takes place. To be clear, I have no affiliation to the event, but I am a huge fan of the sport, having raced for many years at the top end of the amateur sport. Contemplating taking up the challenge? Here’s a potted guide to the sport. Triathlon comprises a swim, bike and run (in that order). The transition from each leg to the next time counts, so the change-overs need to be fast. The most common race distances are: Supersprint (400m swim, 20k bike, 5k run) Sprint (750m, 20k, 5k) Olympic (1500m, 40k, 10k) Half ironman (1900m, 90k, 21k) Ironman (3.8k, 180k and 42k). •
You can swim any stroke except backstroke, but front crawl is the fastest stroke.

Wear a tri suit under your wetsuit so you needn’t change clothes during the race. The shorts have a special seat pad so you can comfortably swim, bike and run in them. Don’t wear normal bike shorts!
A triathlon wetsuit is designed specifically for swimming; it is very flexible so it doesn’t restrict your stroke. A surf wetsuit is not advisable.

You can use any conventional bike but a light racer with drop handlebars and skinny wheels is best.
•
Use “clipless” pedals and cycling shoes which attach directly to the pedals to maximise power transfer.
•
Bike helmets are compulsory, and you must put on your helmet before you move your bike, or you could be disqualified!
•
Drafting on the bike (following in another rider’s slipstream) is not normally allowed and can lead to disqualification. You can still overtake but you must be quick. However, you can draft in the swim.
•
You will have a designated place in “transition” where your bike/run kit will be. You must return your bike to that spot before starting the run. Make sure you know where it is.
•
Use elastic laces in your running shoes to speed up the transition from bike to run.
•
The run is the most straight-forward part of the race, but running straight off the bike can leave you jelly-legged. Practise beforehand to get used to the feeling.
