Here are some visitors viewpoints about Take Shelter...

TAKE SHELTER This May, Downs Junior School hosted ‘Take Shelter’, an event launching the opening of our World War Two air raid shelters as an underground museum. The response from our community has been fantastic; the Shelter tour saw over 1,000 visitors and proved to be a very enjoyable experience for all, young and old. It was particularly special to see the project bring people together as stories were shared to be passed onto future generations.

Many people were visibly moved as they emerged from the museum; our tour guides all gained so much pleasure from showing people around, hearing their memories added to the rich history of the shelter. We had visits from ex-pupils who had used our shelters during the war, and seeing them reliving those memories with their children and grandchildren will stay with us all for a very long time. Our visitors have said: “What a wonderful experience, very tastefully done.” “This has brought back memories of 1939 when I

With song sheets provided, I looked around to see families, couples and people of all ages all joining in with such great gusto that filled the playground with wartime spirit. attended the school. I don’t miss the toilets though! Thank you.” Another former pupil said, “Such a wonderful resource for the city and its children. A moving insight looking back at our history.” Two glorious weekends of sunshine were followed by two of torrential rain, but despite the impressive (and appropriate) sound effects and lightning flashes of the British weather, the punters’ spirits didn’t seem dampened! At the very end of our last rain-soaked day the sun burst through and we were able to venture outside and sing along to wartime classics such as ‘We’ll

The Take Shelter project continues to grow. As well as 1,000 guided tours, great publicity for the school, we’ve also made a very healthy profit raising £1,000s for our school. The foundation has been laid down for our shelters to be used as an exciting additional educational tool that will be accessible for all pupils in the surrounding area to come and explore. Thank you to all the amazing volunteers who made it all possible and to all our lovely visitors who came and made it so special. We hope to open the shelters again in September; please keep an eye on www.fodjbrighton.org.uk for details nearer the time. Sarah Fitzpatrick

fiveways Joyland school is celebrating 30 years of providing education....

LOCAL NURSERY JOYLAND IS 30 YEARS OLD! Joyland celebrates its 30th anniversary this summer. Lynn Hoare opened Joyland in 1986 in a couple of rooms in her house. She went on to establish two further nurseries in Brighton & Hove including the popular Strawberry Hill Nursery. In 2014 Joyland gained an outstanding status from Ofsted and continues to thrive on this success. To mark the occasion, the owners are inviting everyone who has had any involvement in Joyland over the past 30 years to celebrate with them on Saturday 16th July. They will be hosting a drinks reception at the nursery from 2-5pm. Past and present staff, children and parents are invited to bring along photos and share stories about their time at Joyland. During the event there will be an ‘open mic’ session, an opportunity for musicians of any age to play. To express your interest in taking part in the ‘open mic’ and to RSVP, email:

fiveways Ever wondered about the history of Hollingbury Hillfort?...

TALK ON HOLLINGBURY HILLFORT AT BRIGHTON MUSEUM A Celtic castle in Brighton & Hove? A few centuries before the Romans arrived, Iron Age peoples were building substantial “hillforts” – one such hillfort sits towards the top of the downs at Hollingbury, commanding a spectacular view of the surrounding area, on the site of a small collection of earlier Bronze Age burial barrows. Andy Maxted, Curator of Local History and Archaeology at the Royal Pavilion & Museums, writes: 15

“A single ring ditch about 2-3 metres deep was dug, enclosing an area of about 300 x 400 metres. The chalk rubble from the ditch was then deposited between a double row of parallel posts creating a ‘box rampart’ behind the ditch. These posts and their chalk infilling would have supported a formidable palisade and walkway with a large timber gateway built into the eastern rampart. Within the fort, traces of at least five round-houses have been uncovered which implies that local Iron Age peoples lived there. “However, it appears that occupation of the site was fairly short-lived because, by the late Iron Age a few hundred years later, the site is unoccupied and local communities appear to be building bigger, more complicated fortifications elsewhere known as ‘developed hillforts’ with more impressive ramparts and elaborate entrances. “It is not always clear what the purpose of these hillforts was. Although the ditches and ramparts could be pretty substantial, they were not always built in the most suitable defensive positions. In addition, although in a number of cases the hillforts appear to be used for storage and social gatherings, there does not seem to be much evidence of full-time occupation of these sites. “What seems clear however is that the local populations

Hollingbury Hillfort © Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove

were making clear statements of their status and identity in the landscape and that, as communities became more centralised and perhaps tribal, inter-community competition and conflict probably became more common. Certainly, by the time of the Claudian Roman invasion, Britain had clear and often competing tribal territories and it was the rivalries between these tribes that the Romans were able to manipulate to make their second invasion a success.” If you’d like to find out more about Hollingbury Hillfort, Andy Maxted will be giving a Bite-Size Museum talk on Tuesday 12th July at 12 noon in Brighton Museum, Royal Pavilion Gardens, to celebrate the Festival of Archaeology and unearth more about Brighton’s ancient history. He will also be talking about Iron Age hillforts in general. Meet in the Exploring Brighton gallery.

And it would be remiss not to mention Steve Crowley - an amazing and generous man who runs Brighton Community Acupuncture, making acupuncture accessible for everyone. fiveways Welcome to the July edition of Fiveways Gardens...

FIVEWAYS GARDEN - JULY 2016 July is a month for thinking about filling the inevitable gaps that will be emerging, and sitting back and enjoying the fruits of your labour and musing on what you might do differently next year. With this in mind, I thought I’d share some inspiration I’ve gained in visiting various gardens over the past few weeks. Most recent of these was a rainy day last month visiting Great Dixter in Northiam, Kent/Sussex borders. In spite of having to duck out of the way of some seriously heavy showers, I really enjoyed it. It’s packed with such dynamic planting it really is a garden that warrants visiting at different times of the year. Some of you are no doubt familiar with the writings and gardening style of the late Christopher Lloyd. I was given a book of the letters 25 exchanged between him and his lifelong friend and wonderful gardener, Beth Chatto. The quality of the writing kept me engaged. (Available in our local library.) It took an hour and a half to get to Dixter. It’s close to Bodiam Castle, not that far from Sissinghurst or Merriments garden with its lovely nursery. To me, it’s a garden that screams: be brave, be bold, dare to be different, be open to change and forget about low maintenance. It looks lush and verdant and mixes familiar cottage garden flowers with unusual exotics. It’s a lesson in the value of establishing ground cover, and creating a matrix of planting dense enough to keep annual weeds from seeding too freely. The various meadows were looking lovely, which moves me nicely on to another inspiring garden I saw recently. Whilst in London for the annual secret squares and gardens weekend, I stayed with friends who have a small (5m by 15m) garden attached to a Victorian terrace in Greenwich. They’ve created a lovely plant-lovers’ wildlife haven garden, complete with tiny but happy pond and a small but fab-looking meadow. I’d read that meadows are notoriously difficult to establish in small spaces and as this one is in its first season, I will keep an eye on its establishment over the next few years. From their kitchen/diner it looked a treat though. A good mix

of grasses and meadow flowers about 3m in diameter with a mown outer ring, creating the definition that says, “It’s okay, it’s supposed to look like this.” Really lovely and probably an excellent solution for those of you with slopes to garden and not really into mowing as much as needed to create a fine lawn. I hope you get to see some lovely inspiring gardens this summer. Happy gardening till next time. Lisa

fiveways The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah McLoughlin...

TOMATO, FETA AND BASIL TARTS Ingredients Pastry: 250g plain flour 125g butter About 2 tablespoons cold water Filling: 120g good quality mayonnaise 80g feta cheese ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper Tablespoon chopped fresh basil About 15 red and 15 yellow or orange grape tomatoes 27 Garnish: Fresh basil and 2 tablespoons feta cheese crumbled These tasty colourful little tarts are perfect for serving on summer days.

the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the water and mix with a round bladed knife to form a soft, but not sticky, dough. Wrap in cling film and refrigerate for 30 minutes. •

Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface; using an 85mm pastry cutter cut out 12 circles. Line a nonstick muffin tin with the pastry circles and prick with a fork to stop the pastry puffing up during baking. Loosely roll up a little ball of foil to put into each tart case to stop the sides falling down whilst cooking.

Bake for 5 minutes. Let cool completely.

Reduce oven temperature to 180°C/170 fan oven.

Friendly, professional care in your own surroundings.

In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, 120g feta cheese, pepper and basil, stirring to blend. Divide the mixture evenly among the prepared pastry cases.

All your care needs provided by a local Fiveways independent company.

Cut tomatoes in half lengthwise and divide tomato halves evenly among prepared tarts, arranging vertically. Sprinkle remaining 2 tablespoons cheese over tomatoes.

Bake tarts for approximately 10 minutes until tomatoes have softened and are tender. When cool enough to handle, remove the tarts from the tin and serve warm or at room temperature.

Garnish with fresh basil and any spare tomatoes.

fiveways News from Coachwerks....

COACHWERKS AND THE LAUNCH OF THE GREEN ROOM Coachwerks (19a Hollingdean Terrace) has been a hive of activity over the last year. A new collective-run café and restaurant has launched, (café open Weds – Thurs, restaurant taking bookings). Coachwerks Wholefoods workers’ co-op is growing (open Tues - Sat). Bartleby’s Brewery workers’ co-operative has been brewing beer and selling to different pubs across the city and is now having a regular pub day every Sunday, from 1pm to 9pm, at Coachwerks. On top of all this there are all the artists, musicians, potters, makers, photographers, carpenters and much more based there. 31 There has been a string of events, including an open day, gigs, fundraisers and a play as part of the Brighton Festival. The Coachwerks yard is being revamped with the help of Brighton Permaculture Trust. Fruit trees and berry bushes have already been planted and there are plans for grapes and maybe even kiwis.

Recently a few people have secured funding to set up The Green Room – a community hub based at Coachwerks aimed at promoting all things fair and green. We have a small book library, office space which people can use, flyers about local events and campaigns, pamphlets and books about starting up co-operatives, as well as bike tools which we use for community bike fixing events. We also have a food co-operative where we collectively buy organic food for up to a third of the prices in the shops. Please feel free to drop by to have a look at what’s going on at Coachwerks. Borrow or donate some books. Come and fix your bike. Join our food co-op. Use the office space. Come and see what is happening in the area. Find more information, upcoming events and opening times at www.coachwerks.org. If you are interested in any of this, want to be on our email list to be kept up-to-date about events or would

fiveways Opening of the world’s tallest moving observation tower…

i360 TO OPEN THIS SUMMER Opening this summer (the date was still to be announced when we went to print), British Airways i360 will be the world’s tallest moving observation tower and first vertical cable car. Located at the foot of the West Pier, visitors will be able to glide gently up to 450ft to enjoy 360° views of up to 26 miles across Brighton & Hove, the surrounding South Downs and the Sussex coastline. Conceived and designed by Marks Barfield Architects, creators of the London Eye, the 162-metre high visitor attraction has a fully enclosed, hand crafted, futuristic glass viewing pod with room for up to 200 visitors. As guests enjoy the unfolding views, they can move freely 35 around the pod and even enjoy a glass of Champagne during their flight. The i360 will offer a complimentary app for visitors to find out more about how the tower was built, discover the fascinating heritage of Brighton, Hove and Sussex and pick out landmarks they can see during their ‘flight’. A host will be available on board to assist guests and answer any questions. During the evening BA i360 will transform into the Sky Bar, and will host a calendar of exciting events throughout the year. The beach building, at the base of the tower, includes a stylish 400-seat brasserie with sea views and a beachside terrace, where visitors can enjoy signature dishes created by the talented duo of Josh Stanzl and Steven Edwards, winner of MasterChef: The Professionals, using local ingredients. Visitors will be able to enjoy afternoon tea in the i360’s heritage tea rooms, housed in a replica 1866 West Pier toll booth on the upper esplanade with sea views. The beach building will include a gift shop; an exhibition; flexible hospitality rooms and an indoor kids’ play zone. The beach building and the tea rooms will be open to the general public as well as i360 riders. QUIZ QUESTION NINE :

How many arms/tentacles/limbs does a squid have?

fiveways Regular fitness advice from local personal trainer Marianne Clark...

SPORTING FRAUDSTERS... As a dedicated runner myself, I have been struck by the number of recent reports of “sporting fraud” in the amateur running world. Of course, cheating in sport is nothing new, but, in the main, it has occurred in the elite ranks of big money sports. Amateur running has never been a lucrative pastime. I can only assume it is motivated by a desire for glory and 15 minutes of internet fame. Here are a few who took the quest for glory a little too far. Rob Sloan was disqualified and banned from the Kielder Marathon after it transpired that he travelled the final six miles on a bus, then rejoined the race to claim the 37 bronze medal. Questions were raised by other runners who had spotted him on the bus and the race organisers who noted his time was significantly faster than his previous best, as well as his apparent absence from the official race photos. Novice runner Natasha Argent ran her first London Marathon in a very respectable 3.44 which she bragged about loudly on various social media sites. However, the full race results revealed that she had missed several key checkpoints before apparently running the final 20km in under an hour (faster than the elite

race winner). Initially she denied any wrongdoing, but subsequently claimed to have got lost. (If you’ve ever run London, you’ll know how amusing that suggestion is.) She suffered a humiliating public apology, lost her medal and was banned from future races. Mark Vaz completed an 860-mile charity run (Land’s End - John O’Groats) in 7 days, 18 hours and 45 minutes. He charted his progress online, claiming the record in a time 31 hours faster than the previous record. He then applied to Guinness World Records for validation of the feat. However, close examination of Vaz’s claimed times revealed a number of inconsistencies and cast serious doubt over whether an average recreational runner was capable of breaking the record by such a margin, especially as a number of known top class athletes had tried and failed. When challenged over the veracity of his claims, Mark Vaz’s application to have the record validated was swiftly withdrawn and he has apparently retired from running. There is a moral in there. Somewhere. Marianne Clark is the founder of FITSO FITNESS, a personal trainer, GB age group triathlete, and running & endurance sports coach. fiveways Your monthly book review by BBC reviewer Gary Mepsted...

MOTHERING SUNDAY BY GRAHAM SWIFT HARDBACK, SCRIBNER, £12.99 I’ve become known for some time now for ‘banging on’ about the depressing state of contemporary literature, the home-grown variety in particular. The majority of novels published now, so my argument runs, could have been written by a computer fed a few algorithms. The language of the novel, as it’s now served up, has a staleness, a sterility, which denies the reader the emotional and intellectual involvement to which they are entitled. The author Will Self, a year or two ago, declared the novel to be dead and I’m inclined to agree with him. However... For my birthday my partner bought me, amongst other things, a copy of Graham Swift’s new novel - well, novella really - Mothering Sunday. I’m a fan of Swift, even so I wasn’t optimistic that I’d enjoy the book. Sometimes, though, it’s wonderful to be proved wrong. Mothering Sunday is the best piece of fiction I’ve read in a long, long time. The tale is an apparently simple one: orphaned young housemaid Jane Fairchild spends the day in a secret assignation with the about-to-be-

married son of a neighbouring family. The narrative subsequently opens out to embrace Jane’s later life into old age. I’ll say no more about the plot, such as it is. Nothing much happens, and yet everything happens. The writing is make-you-weep gorgeous; perfectly nuanced - but never ostentatious, in the manner of so much British fiction with its frankly vulgar, prize-courting, prose. Mothering Sunday is that rare (I might have said extinct) object, an almost perfectly executed novel which manages to be profound, though never preachy, about how experiences in youth can colour, and influence, our more mature lives. Like so much of the best fiction - Greene’s The End of the Affair - it shouldn’t work. The latter stages of the book, dealing with Jane’s career as a novelist, pass at a gallop, in contrast to the earlier, much slower, pages describing her liaison with Paul Sheringham. This could, possibly does, give the novel an unbalanced feel. There’s too much description of things, you might say; too much dwelling on matters sexual. It doesn’t matter a jot. Great writing is great because of, rather than despite, its ‘faults’. I cannot recommend Mothering Sunday highly enough. It’s restored my faith in the viability of the British novel and deserves to win every award going. Thank you, Mr. Swift. fiveways directory July 2016

fiveways This is the third in a series of articles looking at the superstitions of Old Sussex...

SUSSEX SUPERSTITIONS - FISHERMEN Fishermen are still among the most superstitious of people, with certain rituals and beliefs to keep them safe at sea. Whilst some of these beliefs are now out of date, others are firmly held today. For instance you will only very rarely find a fisherman’s boat with the registered number 13. Some boat owners have even resisted a number where the digits add up to 13. And note the quite odd language taboos, words which fishermen refrained from using at sea or while engaged on land in other important aspects of their trade. These taboo words varied from place to place. Where 43 Yorkshire fishermen or those at Plymouth or Lowestoft will not utter the word “pig” lest it bring them bad luck, in Sussex the dread word is “rabbits”. Ted Watherington, a Brighton fisherman, was in no doubt about that. “You had to call them Bexhill Runners,” he explained. In other parts of the country the words “hare”, “church” or “egg”, if used by anyone aboard, could lead to the abandonment of a day at sea. At times, when there were difficulties on the boat, some might suggest that somehow a rabbit had been on board. This wariness of rabbits extended as far as seeing them on land. It was a very uncertain fisherman who went onto his boat having just seen one earlier. Oddly, meeting nuns on the way to the boat had the same effect. The story is told of the Brighton fisherman, Ted Gillam, taking a bus to Shoreham where his boat was docked. Part way through the journey two nuns boarded the bus. That made up his mind. Meeting nuns: it was a bad start, a warning no less. There’d be no fishing that day. He got off the bus and went home. This particular superstition extends to other fishing communities but how can it be explained? Eastbourne fishermen had the same reaction on seeing a vicar on a Friday and they thought that to meet a cross-eyed person was unlucky, especially if it was a

woman. This particular anxiety was common in many parts of the country and some countered ill-effects of such meetings by spitting or crossing their fingers. Perhaps it is unnecessary to add that women, cross-eyed or not, were not allowed on board boats.
