I have always been interested in fashion so it’s great when you find a piece of vintage clothing or a great designer brand. I found a fabulous 1950s original Christian Dior swing coat once! Why is the role important to the work of Martlets? We’re responsible for ensuring that all the good quality items are sent out to our shops as quickly 5 as possible. fiveways We asked the council about parking around the Fiveways shops....

FREE PARKING FOR SHOPPERS IN FIVEWAYS Some of our readers have been unclear about the arrangements for parking around the shops in Fiveways, following the introduction of residents’ parking. We asked the council to clarify the situation and this is what they told us... Free parking for shoppers is still available at Fiveways following the introduction of a residents’ parking scheme. Drivers can park for up to two hours outside shops and other businesses in Preston Drove and Ditchling Road around the Fiveways junction. The city council introduced the Fiveways parking scheme in April in response to concerns from local 9 people about parking problems in the area. Following public consultation ahead of the scheme being introduced, free short term parking has been included for people visiting shops in the area. Elsewhere, the scheme includes a mix of residents’ parking spaces and shared permit/pay by phone/pay and display spaces. For information on parking in the city, visit www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/parking or call 01273 296622

VARNDEAN SCHOOL WIN SUSSEX FINAL OF COOKING COMPETITION

PRESTON PARK VELODROME REOPENED

Varndean School students entered the South of England Create and Cook Competition.

Preston Park cycle track reopened in May after work to restore it had been completed.

Students had to work in teams of two and to decide who would enter the main competition Varndean held its own version here beforehand. Ben and Harvey shone with their menu design and cooking skills and were selected to go through as the Varndean entry in the official competition. Judges then chose four teams for each region based on their menu and finalists were invited 15 to demonstrate their talents in the Sussex final at City College in May. Ben and Harvey won and will now take part in the grand final on 21st June.

The track was officially opened by Pete Mitchell, who is a member of the Great Britain Cycling Team and a world champion para-cycling tandem pilot.

Varndean School are so thrilled and proud of Ben and Harvey, our Year 8 students who got through to the regional final of the Create and Cook competition 2016 - and won!

This was then followed by the National Youth Omnium where 94 riders aged between 9 and 15 from across the southeast of England took part in a series of races, made up of a time trial, three endurance races and a sprint.

For the competition students were tasked with devising their own seasonal and local ingredient based menu, as well as cooking it for the judges. The menu is seasonal fish and seafood stew with homemade bread and aioli followed by Sussex Downs Meringue with fresh soured cream.

The velodrome, which opened in 1887 and is the oldest in the country, was closed to competitive cycling at the end of 2014, after concerns were raised over safety of the track perimeter fence. The funding package for the necessary work to be carried out was agreed between British Cycling and Brighton & Hove City Council. The total cost was ÂŁ148,000, most of which was funded by a grant award from British Cycling, with the remaining ÂŁ38,000 coming from section 106 funding contributions from planning applications. The work included replacing the perimeter fencing and gates as well as improvements to the site to bring it up to modern standards.

With the cost of nursery care rising, more and more parents returning to work are choosing to use family members as their childcare support network, so it is important that grandparents etc are up to date with their first aid and ready to act with the skills needed should an incident arise. That’s why I’ve combined my 16 years’ experience as a childcare professional and first aid trainer qualifications to create a three-hour class with local parents, grandparents and child carers in mind. In a fun and relaxed atmosphere I teach the basics of child and baby first aid, covering topics such as CPR, choking, head injuries, burns, fractures, meningitis and more. My aim is to develop the first aid skills and confidence in all who attend my class, so why not come along and see for yourself. I will be at the Hop & Vine at Fiveways the last Saturday of every month and also teach in the North Laine - check out my Facebook page (The Training Tree Group) for discounts and class dates. “I had no knowledge of first aid until I attended this training. It exceeded my expectations – brilliant! Life-saving skills taught by a friendly, down to earth, caring lady.” “Thank you for teaching me how to potentially save my baby’s life… I will always remember the vital skills I learnt, although I hope I will never need to use them :-).” Rachel Trowsdale fiveways directory June 2016

CLASSIC LONDON NOVELS

01273 530977 / 0

I recently attended a talk at The Guardian on ‘Writing the London Novel’ with authors AL Kennedy, Will Self and Tony Parsons airing their thoughts on what constitutes a classic London novel, and how the writer has to come to terms, not just with the city’s physical geography, but its sociological, cultural and political landscape too.

www.lewisbyardpla

Little hard information was given about the actual business of writing which, I suspect, disappointed more than a few of the attendees, but on the Tube journey home, I found myself compiling my own list of the best London novels and decided that I’d use this month’s slot to cover a few of my favourites. So here, in no particular order, they are:

19

The End of the Affair, Graham Greene. Set in Clapham during and after WW2, the story of the love affair between novelist Maurice Bendrix and Sarah Miles, the wife of a dull civil servant, says more about what it is to love and lose someone than any novel I know. A profound, astonishing and deeply moving book that will haunt you, perhaps forever. London Belongs to Me, Norman Collins. Set just before WW2, this huge, sprawling novel, clearly influenced by Dickens, is packed with humour, sadness and a wonderful humanity. You’ll never forget its glorious cast of vividly drawn characters. It’s a long novel at 750+ pages, but you’ll wish it were longer. Mr Phillips, John Lanchester. So much better than Lanchester’s later novel, Capital. Mr Phillips, a middleaged accountant, leaves for work one day and unexpectedly decides not to go to his City office. Instead he engages with various shady characters, and even finds himself involved in a bank robbery. Poignant, witty, sublime.

• Kitchens & B • Plumbing & • Plastering & • Painting & D • Refurbishme in a series of bizarre adventures in night-time London. If you don’t find yourself laughing out loud, you’re definitely not well.

01273 679362 07

New Grub Street, George Gissing. Easily Gissing’s finest novel, New Grub Street is the heart-breaking story of info@jtpugh struggling novelist Edwin Reardon’s abortive attempts www.jtpugh to make a success of himself as a writer. Reardon is possessed of some talent but his writing lacks that vital The Doctor is Sick, Anthony Burgess. An unjustly neglected early Burgess masterpiece. Dr Edwin Spindrift commercial spark to set his career in motion. Little apescapes from hospital the night before he’s due to be op- pears to have changed in publishing in the century and a erated on for his brain tumour and finds himself involved quarter since the novel first appeared.

fiveways Welcome to the June edition of Fiveways Gardens....

FIVEWAYS GARDENS...JUNE 2016 Prune Forsythia and Ribes, flowering currant, if you haven’t already. Both can be cut back hard, if they are beginning to outgrow the space available. Unexpected gaps often appear at this time of year. Plants, as living things, have a limited life span and don’t live forever. Every year we need to top up our plants and that can either mean an opportunity to try something new, or replace a lost favourite. It’s not always a good idea to replace like for like. If you’ve lost a shrub or tree, look it up on a site like the RHS http://www.rhs.org.uk/ and you’ll find advice about replanting the same plant in the same place. It’s also worth thinking about thinning 21can out some of the more vigorous border plants that take over if left unchecked. Garden centres and nurseries are full of beautiful summer-flowering bedding now, and these plants can really make the borders sing, and often will last well into late summer or even autumn. Don’t forget to grab some annual climbers too, to fill gaps on fences and trellis. Climbers are tough for garden centres to keep looking good, so tend to sell through fast, so get in quick. Most summer bedding and climbers prefer a warm sunny spot, but there are a few annuals that don’t mind some shade. Ask in the nursery, but Begonias – there are some lovely new varieties – Ageratum, Nicotiana and even some Lobelias often do well in the shade. As things heat up over the summer, it’s worth remembering to keep watering new shrubs and trees – hot, windy days take loads of water out of plants. Water away from the stem or trunk to encourage roots outwards. Even when it rains, bear in mind that your trees and shrubs act as umbrellas and water often barely penetrates the surface. A few pounds spent on some mulch, either decorative such as cobbles or well rotted compost or manure, will help too. Mulch containers with horticultural grit or other decorative stone – it really will cut down the watering and keep your pot plants in better shape. Consider installing or getting someone else to install an irrigation system. If done properly they are a very efficient way of using water, even more important now that most of us are on water meters. Best wishes Lisa

fiveways Get along to this - should be fun.....

LUCKY DIP TAKES A SEASIDE THEME WITH THE BEACH BONANZA SUMMER FAIR Saturday, 18th June 2016, from 10am till 3pm Four years ago we came together as a small group of Hollingdean residents, having thought that life would be much more interesting if the shopping parade in the Dip could become more of a focal point. And so at Christmas 2011 the Lucky Dip was born. People enjoyed it so much, we ran one in the summer too, and over the last four years the Lucky Dip has become well established as Hollingdean’s biannual street market and fair. We are all volunteers with our 25 individual skills and talents, but the beauty of it is everyone has something wonderful to offer. Of course we’d always love to have more people to join us, whether just to help out on the day, or to be involved in organising future events. This year’s summer Lucky Dip is festooned with fun. The theme is the beach, with a Hawaiian twist, so expect colourful shirts, palm trees, necklaces of flowers, and plenty of hula all round. Hollingdean’s very own Anna Swartz is heading up a ceilidh band for all who fancy a bit of a dance and giggle. There will be other live music performed by exciting new local talent, including our local schools. There are cake and costume competitions and tombola and craft activities. There are also amazing local producers and craft folk selling their wares – look for the craft beer made just yards away at Coachwerks, our local multi-disciplined creative studios; also for sale are plants, home made herbal creams, preserves, ice cream and much much more.

Last year’s fruity hat competition

So put the date in your diary and make the time to enjoy our warm and friendly atmosphere. When? Saturday 18th June from 10am till 3 pm. Where? Hollingbury Place, aka “the Dip”.

There will be delicious foods of the world to enjoy. Either If you want to volunteer or would like to hire a stall then call Liz on 01273 236160. sit and relax or pedal your way to making your own Or visit our Facebook page smoothie with the return of the Urban Smoothie Bike. www.facebook.com/Hollingdeanluckydip

fiveways The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah Stubbs...

RECIPE... LEMON POSSETS WITH STRAWBERRIES A tangy summer dessert that pairs beautifully with English strawberries and buttery shortbread. Ingredients: 27 Lemon possets: 600ml double cream 200ml caster sugar zest of 3 lemons and 75ml lemon juice Shortbread cookies: 250g butter – room temperature 27 65g caster sugar 300g plain flour 75g cornflour Strawberry topping: 500g strawberries 2 tablespoons caster sugar extra strawberries to decorate Method: • In a medium-sized saucepan, heat the cream and sugar, stirring continuously until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes over a medium heat. Remove from the heat and whisk in the lemon juice and zest. • Cool for about 5 minutes and then pour into short glasses, placed on a tray to steady them, and leave to cool down completely. Cover with plastic wrap and chill in the fridge overnight, or for a day, until set. • To make the shortbread place the butter, caster sugar, flour and cornflour together in a food processor and whizz until the ingredients start to clump together. • Scrape the mixture from the processor and turn onto a lightly floured work surface, bring the dough

together and roll out to about 1cm thickness. Cut out cookies with a shaped cutter and place on a baking tray lined with baking paper. • Cook at 160C/140C fan oven for 30-40 minutes until a pale golden colour. Whilst the cookies are still warm dip them in the caster sugar. • To make the strawberry topping cut the strawberries in half or in quarters if large, and put in a pan with the sugar and lemon juice. Heat gently until the sugar dissolves, then bring to a simmer. Cover the pan and cook the strawberries for 3 mins or until dark red and syrupy. Set aside to cool. When ready to serve, spoon some compote onto the lemon posset and garnish with a strawberry and shortbread. The compote can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. fiveways News from Coachwerks, door opened on Saturday 30th April...

COACHWERKS’ OPEN DAY WAS A GREAT SUCCESS, ENJOYED BY MANY! We opened our doors on Saturday 30th April and welcomed you inside to say hello, stay for a pint or two, enjoy some delicious vegan food and get creative yourselves. And you did, it was great to see so many familiar faces from our community and to say hi to some new ones. One of the items on our programme for the day was an auction to raise money for the kitchens at Calais. Many of the artists at Coachwerks donated a piece of their work and together, with your bids, we raised £260.59. We would like to thank you for your support, not only for coming along to Coachwerks and saying hello but for joining in and helping us to raise this much needed 31 money. Laura Henderson - Brighton resident and friend of Coachwerks - recently went to Calais too and is able to report on how your money will help: “I went to Calais to volunteer with a charity called Care4Calais. Organisations like this and Calais Kitchens are the lifeblood of the volunteer effort for the refugees. Together they provide the clothes, roofs, food, education and recreation for thousands of displaced people. Having now experienced some of their operations first hand I can see how significant even small donations become. Donated food and clothes in a Care4Calais warehouse. It may look a lot but when you are catering for over 4,000 people it does not last long.

You hear this sort of thing from charities all the time but seeing the impact is eye opening - every pound really does make a difference. The various volunteer kitchens in the Jungle provide more than 4,000 hot meals every day. And the refugees are demonstratively grateful smiley, thankful, polite - and with an impressive (almost British) ability to queue patiently. “The charities report that donations and volunteers have decreased since some of the camp was recently evicted by the French authorities. Many people assume the camp is no longer there but this is not the case - there are still around 5,000 refugees in the Jungle so the money earned by small enterprises such as the auction at Coachwerks is more valuable than ever. What really struck me during my time in Calais was the heartwarming humanity - from the volunteers who work so selflessly to the refugees themselves who were always keen for us to play sport, drink tea and chat. Despite this devastating crisis there are glimmers of hope that we have the heart to treat each other as people and I feel sure that, given the chance, the refugees would love to thank everyone for the support.” By Rachel Entwistle & Laura Henderson fiveways directory June 2016

fiveways Montessori school is celebrating 30 years of providing education...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BRIGHTON AND HOVE MONTESSORI SCHOOL!

Providing authentic AMI Montessori education to the children of Brighton & Hove for over thirty years, twenty-five of which have been at 67 Stanford Avenue near Fiveways. The school has an energetic and devoted team of teaching staff headed by Daisy Cockburn, the founder of the school. Children attend the Brighton & Hove Montessori School from 2 – 12 years old, where each child is provided with an individualised Montessori education without testing! http://www.brighton-montessori.org.uk/ Montessori education provides an enriched environment supporting formation of the academic, social,35 and problem-solving skills that now, more than ever, are critical for lifetime success. Over a hundred years ago, Dr Maria Montessori anticipated most of what we know about the conditions necessary for optimal human brain development, and began producing remarkable results among children from all backgrounds. Brighton and Hove Montessori School founder, Daisy Cockburn, first experienced it as a child herself and after a career in arts administration, followed by studying Child Psychology and Cognitive Science and training at the Maria Montessori Institute http://www. mariamontessori.org, she opened the school in 1985.

The latest data on brain development makes it clear that the hands-on, activity-oriented, problem-solving, and collaborative learning communities found in Montessori schools are producing collaborative, adaptive leaders ready for the unique challenges of the 21st century. We certainly know that many of our past pupils are thriving as very capable members of society. We will enjoy celebrating our special birthday year and look forward to the next 30 years! Parents are always welcome to contact us on 01273 702485, email on info@brighton-montessori.org.uk or attend any of our Open Events, please check our website for dates and times. http://www.brighton-montessori.org.uk/

QUIZ QUESTION NINE :

What is the name of the exclusive holiday island in the Caribbean frequented by Britain’s Princess Margaret?

fiveways News from the Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods...

BEES IN YOUR GARDEN Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods had a fascinating talk about bees from Heather McNiven of the Brighton & Lewes Beekeepers Association. Whilst Heather mentioned the three main types of bee we find in this country – Bumble, Solitary and Honey - the focus of the talk was the honey bee. She has kept bees for over 12 years and helps with swarms locally. Life in a hive In a typical beehive there will be one queen bee, 2,000 drones and 60,000 worker bees. The worker bees are the females and they do pretty much all of the work from the minute they hatch. Their jobs range from cleaning out cells ready for the queen bee to lay eggs in and nurturing the eggs and pupae, to guard duty and foraging 37 for pollen and nectar. They can only forage for about three weeks before they die of exhaustion as their wings deteriorate from the frantic to-ing and fro-ing they must do. The male drones have it pretty easy, but their star performance happens when it’s time to mate. The queen bee rises to 800 feet to mate with about a dozen drones, who then die after their moment of glory. The drones come from any hives which ensures a diversity of genes in the next generation. The queen then lays about 2,000 eggs every day from April to October - no mean feat considering that’s her own body weight! Swarms Bees sometimes swarm to seek a new home. Some bees are more prone to swarm or it can happen when there are too many in a hive. They generally only swarm until they’ve found their new place. Unless it is somewhere really inappropriate then it’s best to leave them be. What plants attract bees? Different types of bees visit different shaped flowers, but in general herbs and cottage garden type plants are good. It is important to not grow double or triple fancy flower heads as these provide no access for bees. Also annual bedding plants are best avoided due to mostly being covered in insecticide and are less bee-friendly from intensive breeding.

Solitary bees 90% of all bees are solitary. They are important crop pollinators but are in decline. We encourage them with our bee bank where we leave bare patches of soil and some dead wood. This is something all gardeners can do. Our next event is a picnic on Sunday July 3rd at midday. All welcome. Regular fitness advice from local personal trainer Marianne Clark...

FITSO FITNESS - A DAY IN T Up with the lark. Sort the children for school. Check weather forecast and select clothing accordingly. Fuel up with a daddy bear sized bowl of porridge and strong tea. Load the car with assorted weights, ropes, boxing gloves and other instruments of torture and head to Preston Park for the first session of the day. 7am: Meet a new client who has signed up for a long distance cycle event. He says he’s very unfit and my fitness assessment bears this out. We have some work to do! We agree on an initial 8-week campaign with a bespoke programme concentrating on bike strength and endurance. I send him off with homework that he clearly wasn’t expecting, but with enthusiasm intact. 8.30am: 1-2-1 run session involving a tour of some of Brighton and Hove’s finest hills in preparation for an upcoming half marathon. An hour of sweat, toil and muttered expletives later we are done. “Surprisingly enjoyable” is the conclusion. 9.45am: Admin hour dealing with new client enquiries, arranging fitness assessments, dispensing between-

THE LIFE

1.45pm: Shower, a change of sweaty clothes and monster lunch. 2.30pm: Back to the park for a PT session with a regular client. Boxing, kettle bells, step running (my favourite), and a healthy dose of core exercises. The promised rain duly arrives but the weather doesn’t normally deter me, sometimes to the disappointment of my clients. 3pm: Back home for a shower and another change of clothes after the rain. Time for a snack and a cup of tea. Another admin blitz planning upcoming PT and run group sessions and replying to email and phone calls. 6.30pm: Back to the park for the evening run groups. It’s cold, wet and windy but everyone throws themselves into the session with gusto. Another pair of trainers and another set of Lycra soaked. Good job I have a few! 8pm: Home. QUIZ QUESTION TEN :

In which city is the world famous Copacabana beach?

fiveways Just in case you ever felt tempted...

DROP LITTER – PICK UP A FINE! People caught dropping litter, flytipping and allowing their dogs to foul in public places anywhere in Brighton & Hove now face £75 on-the-spot fines. Enforcement officers, employed by private company 3GS Environmental Solutions, began patrolling in the city in March. The new service supports the council’s strategy to encourage everyone to produce less waste and recycle more. It aims to tackle antisocial and illegal behaviour, improve the environment and reduce waste clean-up and disposal costs. Each year the council receives dozens of complaints from residents about fly-tipping, litter and other 41 antisocial behaviour and the issues are often raised at residents’ groups and community meetings. The scheme was approved by councillors last year and 3GS was awarded the contract following a competitive tendering process. It covers fly-tipping, littering, flyposting, graffiti, dog fouling and disposing of commercial waste illegally. The enforcement officers wear body cameras to gather evidence and identify offenders. The council follows Government guidelines to ensure that any fines are issued responsibly.

Officers also work with businesses, schools and other community groups to educate and raise awareness of environmental crime. They are looking out for good examples of people picking up litter and improving their neighbourhoods and there is a gift voucher reward scheme as part of the initiative. Councillor Gill Mitchell, Chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “We are often asked to take a tougher stance around antisocial behaviour such as dropping litter, fly-posting, dog fouling and graffiti. This enforcement scheme, along with the publicity and education programme, will tackle the problem head-on and send out a strong message that deliberate antisocial behaviour which blights our city will not be tolerated.” Those issued with a fixed penalty notice who refuse to pay could end up in court and not only be ‘named and shamed’ but also landed with a much higher penalty and possibly court costs. Regular updates on how the scheme is operating and the effect it is having on improving the city’s environment will be reported to the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee. Under the terms of the agreement, no targets will be set for issuing fines and 3GS is prohibited from paying its officers any form of performance pay, commission or bonuses linked in any way to the number of tickets individual officers issue. News from Blakers Park...

BLAKERS PARK TOILETS TO CLOSE FOR THE WINTER Brighton & Hove City Council has announced changes to public toilets provision, as a result of an agreement by the Budget Council in February to deliver £40,000 of savings from public toilets for 2016/2017. The toilets in Blakers Park will close for the winter months (from 1st October through to Good Friday), but will open for the rest of the year. The toilets in Hollingbury Park will also be closed in winter. Five other public toilets in the city will be affected. Councillor Gill Mitchell, chair of the environment committee, explained: “The current budget pressures meant that closing some toilets was always inevitable. However, I am pleased that officers have worked hard to find ways to keep the vast majority of facilities open. This includes the toilets at Saltdean Oval, Preston Park and Rottingdean which were previously earmarked for closure. The decision to fully close the toilets at the Grenadier and Victoria Road in Portslade, and to close those in Blakers Park, Greenleas, Hollingbury Park and Aldrington Recreation Ground over the winter months was made following a detailed review of all facilities in the city. The review looked at usage and the proximity of other toilet facilities. We appreciate that some residents will be disappointed, but these changes are essential to put the service on a sound footing for the future and we can now move forward with plans to invest £1.5 million in the total refurbishment of some city facilities.”

BLAKERS PARK COMMUNITY PICNIC & SUMMER FAIR Don’t forget that the Friends of Blakers Park are holding their annual Community Picnic & Summer Fair on Saturday 18th June from 11.30am to 5pm. Everyone is welcome and there will be live music, a bouncy castle, games, face painting, a variety of stalls and a fire engine!

FIVEWAYS FUN... WHERE IN FIVEWAYS?

Conor's Conundrum

fiveways

A poor man is sitting in a pub.He sees the man next to him pull a wad of £50 notes from his wallet. He turns to the rich man and tells him:‘I have an extraordinary talent. I know almost every song that ever existed.’ The rich man laughs. The poor man says: ‘I am willing to bet you all the money you have in your wallet that I can sing a genuine song with a lady’s name of your choice in it.’ The rich man laughs again and says ‘How about my daughter’s name, Monica Gabriela Watson.’ Five minutes later the poor man goes home rich and the rich man goes home poor.
