With the days lengthening and the temperatures rising and the prospect of Summer ahead of us there is a certain optimism in the air and a spring in the step. Synonymous with the change from Winter to Summer is the ending of the football season and the starting of the cricket season and to that end we have both covered in this month’s edition of The Fiveways Directory.
We have a feature on the under 16’s local football team Hollingbury Hawks lifting the Sussex County Cup which is some achievement so very well done to them and on the cricket side we have an article about preparing for the new season on page 25.
Continuing the active sporty theme we have the next in the series of fitness articles we are currently running plus a map of the Brighton Marathon route plus all the regulars. We hope you find something of interest in the Directory this month! Have a great April! The Fiveways Directory Team 01273 551021 info@fivewaysdirectory.co.uk www.fivewaysdirectory.co.uk

Interview with Sharon Whiting who is a resident of Fiveways.
Fiveways Face... Sharon Whiting Whereabouts in Fiveways do you live? I live in Bates Road - it’s a street I’ve really grown to love as there is such a sense of community here. It’s been a fantastic place for the children to grow up, with great schools, beautiful parks and all the amenities of Fiveways right on the doorstep. How long have you lived in the area? We moved to Brighton in 1998. We’d been living in Australia for 3 years and in Hong Kong for 4 years before that, so we were ready to put down roots. My parents had just moved to Brighton after a lifetime of globetrotting and we really wanted to be near them. We rented a house from a friend in Balfour Road for a few months when we first arrived and absolutely fell in love with the area. Our house in Bates Road was the first one we looked at and we just knew it was the one for us! What do you most like about Fiveways? I really love the fact that, while central Brighton is only a short walk away, Fiveways has everything I need and on a very human scale. It’s really great seeing new businesses open and thrive, although I really must curb my “Preloved of Brighton” habit - I always find something I want to buy whenever I visit! We hear that you have opened an art gallery in Brighton. Tell us more about it… My husband John and I opened 35 North Contemporary Fine Art in September last year. It has been a dream of ours for a very long time and, after 15 years of opening our home as part of the Fiveways Trail in the Artists Open Houses festival, we felt ready to take on the challenge. We show the work of local, national and international artists and have a full programme of exhibitions booked through to the beginning of next year.
“Early morning, St James Street” by John Whiting
How can people find out more? The best way is to visit our website at www.35northgallery.com or if you are in the North Laine please pop in – the gallery is located opposite the Drum Cavern, just down from the Post Office sorting office on North Road. Opening hours are Thursday/ Friday/Saturday 11am – 5.30pm and during the festival we’ll be open on Sundays as well. The gallery will also be hosting performances by masters of brevity and wit Tony Felstead (another Fiveways alumni) and Dave Waddell on Saturdays throughout the festival.

OLD PHOTO
Warleigh Lodge, Ditch This house, easily the largest in Ditchling Road in recent times, was built about 1860 at what was then the northern extremity of the town. It had an extensive garden overlooking the railway from Brighton to Lewes. The site was the subject of controversy between Brighton Corporation who wanted it for a new school to replace Ditchling Road School, and the previous owners who wished to continue using it for industrial purposes. Photographed from within Florence Road on 4 July 1971, the building has since been demolished and Downs Infant School is now on the site. The house may well have given its name to nearby Warleigh Road that was certainly built after it.

It’s evidently been a very busy year at Varndean and by the look of it there is a lot more to come...
Varndean School working with the local community The students and staff at Varndean School have been inviting their local community in to get involved! Local residents and primary school pupils came to watch performing arts students in a community matinée of their annual show. This year the production was the ever-popular Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat featuring students from ages 11 to 16. The packed-out show was a huge success with the local residents both young and old! Following the performance the community members were invited to sample the talents of our BTEC Hospitality students in a cream tea party which was planned, created and hosted by the students themselves. These events are just a part of our ongoing relationship with those around us. Our PE department have just hosted the Brighton and Hove Primary School Quicksticks Hockey Cluster competition, which saw teams from six local primary schools take to the historic fields – well done to the winners, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School! We also offer community lets of our facilities. We were recently successful in securing funding from Brighton and Hove City Council’s wellbeing Innovation Fund to develop a community garden classroom. The benefits to young people’s wellbeing and development from learning outside the classroom are well documented with a recently coined phrase “nature deficit disorder” being discussed widely in the media. Through our garden classroom we are hoping to develop an intergenerational skill-sharing project where members of the older community with horticultural knowledge and skills can support the planning and growing of suitable plants and foods. Students will learn from their expertise and in exchange our young people will share their IT knowledge of Facebook, FaceTime, Skype and email with the community volunteers to help combat the loneliness which can be experienced by older people whose families live further away. If any community organisations are interested in being involved with the

GARDENS

Brought to you each month by Fiveways gardening expert Lisa Attwell...
Fiveways Gardens... April 2015 Continuing to muse on good garden design, I’m going to share some planting design tips this month. Having done your survey and plan, the next stage is to get down to the nitty-gritty of the hard and soft landscaping. Hard landscaping refers to the paving, fences and walls in and around your garden - the built framework of your design upon and around which you will arrange the soft landscaping – the plants, including lawn, trees, shrubs, climbers etc.
Given how much some plants can grow over the years, it may be that the structure of your garden is fine, but the planting needs refreshing. With so many plants to choose from it can be difficult to know where to start in attempting to create plant combinations that will delight you all year round. You need to consider each plant – its height, spread, form, texture, colour, leaf shape and habit – and consider how all your plants will go together. It may help to select your plants in groups such as trees and shrubs, and divide these into evergreen and deciduous. Trees and shrubs are great for defining the garden space, and provide structure to the planting. Try and include a few evergreens to provide year round interest. They are larger and not as easily replaced as smaller plants, so start your planting plan with these. The ‘flower power’ is mostly provided by herbaceous perennials and annuals, although, of course, there are plenty of good flowering shrubs out there. Having already decided on a style it’s easier to limit your plant palette to fit that style. For example, if you have chosen a Mediterranean style go for plants that reflect that style. Typically these will be plants which have adapted to hot and dry conditions and will be characterised by fine needle-like leaves or silver grey foliage such as lavender, rosemary, salvia, phlomis and stachys. It doesn’t matter whether your plants are native to the Med, they just have to fit the style and be able to grow here. Consider myrtle as a small tree, various Cistus or rock rose as key shrubs, and perovskias as part of your flower power. Myrtus communis subspecies tarentina is a great myrtle for our small gardens, as it has a compact form.
Best wishes Lisa

Things go wrong sometimes
Careful editing will pay dividends. I was reading an article by one of my favourite garden designers, Andy Sturgeon, recently and he recommends limiting your plant list to just a handful of key players and then halving it. If you can employ a bit of restraint, the overall result is usually easier on the eye from the ‘bigger picture’ perspective. In essence, the more time you spend on the planning stages the more likely you are to turn your dream garden into reality.

This was followed by another Hollingbury goal by Mohammed Kamara to make it 3-0, with the opposition scoring a late goal courtesy of Reece Hallard. Final result was 3-1 to Hollingbury Hawks. The under-16s team were created in 2007 and this will be their last season together, with talented players heading to local semi-professional clubs such as Lewes and Whitehawk FC. Two of the players, Oliver Johnson and Patrick Gracethorne, have played in the team for all eight seasons. It is something of a family affair too, with current manager Ady Maglennon assisted by his son Luke, and another son Jordan playing for the team. Ady is also assisted by Colin Addison-Milne. The club is made up of nine teams in total and many younger players will be looking to emulate the older team and bring success to the club. Hollingbury Hawks FC was founded over 40 years ago in 1973 as Hollingbury Hawks Boys FC and is the umbrella for two separate clubs, Hollingbury Hawks Youth and Hollingbury Hawks Colts. Both clubs wear the same kit and all teams play in the Sussex Sunday Youth Football League. The aim of the clubs, probably unchanged from the days of Hollingbury Hawks Boys FC, is ‘to provide a fun footballing environment where young players between the

LOCAL EVENT

The cricket season approaches and it’s time to get ready....
NatWest CricketForce Day Saturday 18th April 2015
In 2012 we formed the HCSA (Horsdean Community Sports Association), consisting of four long-established local cricket clubs, Brighton & Hove Crescent, Dome Mission, Brighton Electricity, St Matthias and Patcham junior football club, who all regularly train and play their matches at Horsdean. Both Patcham and St Matthias run large junior sections. Our intention is to upgrade the facilities via grant funding; we have obtained a quotation for three enclosed cricket nets, an artificial cricket strip and a junior five-aside all-weather football pitch (also suitable for tennis/ netball). Throughout the year there are some 300 juniors and adults currently using Horsdean; with the addition of improved facilities this number would increase and encourage even more people to take part in a healthy outdoor team activity. To date the Association have obtained Fields in Trust status for Horsdean, thus protecting it for the future as an open space community area. On the advice of the city council, who are very supportive of our aims, we submitted a pre-planning application to them for our proposed improvements; their conclusion was that “the benefits of the proposals could outweigh any negative impact on the rural character and appearance of the area”. The next step in the process is for the HCSA to obtain a 25-year lease at Horsdean; this would allow us to pursue funding from Sport England and other grant sources. We are currently in discussions with the council to finalise details of the lease. The five clubs are taking part in the NatWest CricketForce Day; this consists of club volunteers turning up to clean, paint and tidy up the pavilion, litter-pick and cut back trees/bushes as required. If you would like to come along and help with this community project, please contact Simon Wood -

RECIPE
27 The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah Stubbs
Easter egg cookies Melt-in-the-mouth egg-shaped choc chip shortbread cookies filled with chocolate are perfect for a last-minute Easter bake! Ingredients: 250g butter (room temperature) 65g caster sugar 250g plain flour 125g cornflour Food colouring paste (I used yellow, blue and pink) 80g finely chopped dark chocolate For the filling: 225g dark chocolate (39 per cent cocoa solids) 125ml double cream I have some tried and tested recipes that I use time and time again, but I like to give them a twist to suit different times and occasions in the year. This very simple buttery shortbread cookie recipe is just one of them. By adding some chopped chocolate and a dab of food colouring, the dough can be cut into egg shapes, cooked and sandwiched together with a chocolate filling to create delicious treats for Easter tea-time. Method: •
Cream the butter and caster sugar together, add the flour and cornflour, mixing together to form a dough.
•
Divide the dough equally into 3, adding a dab of different colouring to each piece and lightly kneading the colour in.
•
Finely chop the 80g plain chocolate and roughly divide into 3 piles on the chopping board. Take each piece of coloured dough and roll into the chocolate, kneading a little to combine the chocolate into the dough. If the dough gets too sticky, dust with a small amount of plain flour.
•
Roll out each colour dough to about 1½cm depth, lay

a piece of cling film over the dough and, using your egg-shaped biscuit cutter, press out your egg shapes, through the cling film. This method gives you nice rounded sides to your cookie and when sandwiched together the cookie will look egg-shaped! Re-roll any trimmings. •
Place the cookies on a tray lined with baking paper and cook at 160C/140C fan oven for approximately 30 minutes.
•
To make the chocolate filling, gently heat the cream in a pan (but don’t boil), add the finely chopped chocolate to the cream and stir until the chocolate is melted; cool until the filling is thick enough to spread on the cookies and then sandwich together.

Welcome to Sarah Hurst Skin & Beauty - Industry leaders in results driven Beauty and Aesthetic treatments....
Sarah Hurst Skin and Beauty Meet the Team... This month I would like to introduce you to the team at Sarah Hurst Skin & Beauty. We focused on Sarah last month, but behind her is a fantastic, knowledgeable team. Let's start with Charly. She works alongside Sarah as a full time beauty therapist and joined the team in October 2014 after intensive training to ensure that she knows about all the product ranges and treatments. "My name is Charly, I am 19 and live in Seaford. I completed my level 3 in beauty last summer. Before heading into the beauty industry I had a summer of travelling. I joined Sarah Hurst Skin & Beauty in October 2014. I have already increased my training level, having trained with fantastic brands such as Environ, jane iredale, Advanced Nutrition Programme and CACI. Sarah Hurst Skin & Beauty is a fabulous place to work alongside a really hard-working team. We strive to deliver a high standard for the clients and make them feel comfortable and valued with every treatment we provide." Filiz is one of the part-time therapists, who started at the same time as Rasana in November 2014. "I am from Turkey and a single mother with two children living in Brighton. I have been fascinated with the beauty industry since 2009 so I decided to retrain in a new career in skin treatments and beauty therapy. I am now qualified as a beauty therapist and specialised in reflexology from 2011 until 2013, and have recently trained in sports massage and advanced waxing. I have gained experience in various salons and now I am so happy to be part of the Sarah Hurst Skin & Beauty team and I look forward to growing together." Last but certainly not least, Rasana. “My name is Rasana. I am 26 and from Nepal, but have been in the UK for the past 16 years. I grew up in South-East London until I got married in July 2014 and

moved to Brighton. I love the beauty industry and attended Lewisham College so I could qualify. This was 6 years ago and since then I have worked and gained experience in different salons. I attended courses like hot stone massage and advanced waxing. I love working in beauty as I get to meet lovely people and have that bond with all my clients. I love it! I want to give an excellent service to all our clients. Having now begun working at Sarah Hurst Skin & Beauty, this has helped me with the knowledge on products as we have in-house training and external training to keep our services up to a high standard. We are definitely a great team; I really enjoy working with the girls.

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue
You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.
The Reality
The Law (C.R.A.G - charging for residential accommodation guide) allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £800 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for.
The Solution
For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two Trusts within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, prevent your home from being taken into account by the local authority altogether should you ever require care in the future.
The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as Trust beneficiaries for that particular Trust will subsequently have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy the survivor is protected from having to sell the property to pay for their care should they need it because it is not possible to sell just their half of the property and the Crag guidelines clearly state that the market value of half a property is £0. The second half of the property will then ultimately go into Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. The beneficiaries will at that stage have both halves safe and secure in Trust and will be able to share and dispose of the property according to the wishes of the settlors (the original owners of both halves). By leaving 1/2 the property into Trust on first death, the surviving partner can still sell the property to downsize if they wish and are not restricted in any way with regards to what they wish to do to or with the property - it simply means that it is safeguarded and therefore will definitely be able to be appointed to the chosen beneficiaries when the time comes. For sole owners immediately conveying at least half of your property into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and becoming a Trustee and primary beneficiary of the Trust with others nominated to become beneficiaries after your death is usually enough to take away the risk of the property being considered as an asset to be sold if care is required as the property is not absolutely owned by yourself anymore and again it is not possible to sell half a house or force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about how this strategy could be of real benefit to you and your family.
For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey at least 1/2 of your property into it which will produce the same result.
The Reasoning
When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. When the first partner dies, they leave their half into their trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the primary beneficiary which means that they have complete control over the property and what happens to it.

Brighton and Hove Montessori School At Brighton and Hove Montessori School we are proud to welcome children aged 2-12 and their families from all over the world to come together in a unique loving community where everyone is valued for being different and where everyone works together to the best of their ability. There is now masses of information available in books and on the internet but nothing replaces the quality of human interaction and learning through hands-on experience – in training to be a Montessori teacher, in being a child within a Montessori school and for parents in visiting an authentic Montessori school. Children can join this Montessori school at any age, as staff here have particular expertise in supporting inclusion and helping each child tap into their own incredible urge for learning and independent capability. A lot of activities actually enable a child to teach themselves through working with what naturally attracts them. Each activity gives practice for skills and understanding that progresses on – often to the next activity on the shelf. The physical environment and attitude of the adults in a Montessori school creates a welcoming, and in many ways self-sustaining, community for children and it is a particular requirement of authentic Montessori schools that Montessori classes should be of mixed ages within each developmental phase and that children in different

FITNESS

Some advice on getting fit and being healthy from local resident Marianne Clark…
Find your fitness passion The other day a friend was complaining about how unfit she was, how little exercise she did, how she had no time to get to the gym. It’s true, she doesn’t go to the gym; (though, in truth, more because she loathes it than lack of time). But she does walk her dog for at least an hour every day, as I pointed out. “But that’s not exercise,” she maintained. “I enjoy that.” So, what counts as exercise? It is a common misapprehension that exercise must involve (a) a significant element of pain, suffering and deprivation, and (b) hours in a sweaty gym hauling big weights around or toiling on a treadmill going nowhere fast. The reality is that you don’t have to go to a gym to exercise, and neither are pain and suffering necessary elements of any fitness regime. Nor does fitness need to involve extremes - you don’t have to run a marathon, cycle 200 miles or do an ironman triathlon to be fit - in fact, extremes of anything are generally unhealthy, even exercise! UK government recommendations are that adults should exercise at least two and a half hours a week - the equivalent of 30 minutes five times a week - and that this time should include exercise that both raises your heart rate and works the main large muscle groups. The reality is that any activity that fulfils these criteria counts, including gardening, vigorous housework (if you’re so inclined),

or walking the dog! But the real key to fitness is finding an activity you love, because if you love it you’ll be keen to get out and do it, and it will be effective and sustainable in the long term. If you’re a natural gym bunny or prefer indoor exercise inside, that’s fine - Brighton has plenty to offer from yoga to spinning, squash to indoor climbing. If you enjoy the great outdoors, then, with the Downs on one side and the sea on the other, the possibilities are almost endless - you can run for miles along the seafront, or hit the trails in Stanmer Park on foot or bike, and you can try just about every water sport out there from sea-swimming to kayaking, paddle boarding to windsurfing. So, why not try something new and see if you can’t find a new passion that will keep you fit for life.
