ROOF & FIREWALL Specialists Have you got damp in the corner of a bedroom or along the ceiling of an upstairs wall? Nine times out of ten it’s faulty lead flashings and firewalls causing these problems. The majority of Brighton homes are at least 100 years old and so are their firewalls. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.

The second in a series of interviews with all the local councillors in Fiveways…
Meet Local Councillor Michael Inkpin-Leissner Michael was elected in May as a Labour councillor for Hollingdean & Stanmer. Do you live in the Hollingdean & Stanmer area? Yes, I live in Coldean. I love this area and can only agree with fellow residents who call Coldean a village. It is a fantastic community, sometimes a bit isolated in the large ward, but possibly that is why the community spirit is so strong. Centre points are for sure the Church of St Mary Magdalen, the new community café and of course the new Coldean Community Corner including a charity shop. What is your background? As most of you know, I am German; my origin lies in the wonderful small town of Emsdetten in the Muensterland. As long as I can remember my family was involved in politics. I come from a traditional Social Democratic family, my late father was leader of the SPD in Emsdetten and Deputy Mayor for a very long time. My mum is still very active in a workers’ support organisation (AWO). I have an older married sister who is a head teacher of a junior school in Bavaria. I am currently a Cabin Manager for an airline, based in Gatwick. As you can see, service is in my blood, may it be for passengers or communities.

What made you want to become a councillor? As mentioned I have a political background in Germany. I always believed strongly in social responsibility and community spirit. I mentioned above that Coldean sometimes feels a bit isolated, possibly due to its secluded location in a valley. Whilst a lot of prestige projects were launched in the city centre, the outskirts of Brighton and Hove were neglected by the former administration. I would like to help changing this together with my fellow Ward Councillors Tracey Hill and Caroline Penn. Personally I felt so welcomed in my local community, that I felt I should give something back. As Coldean had no resident councillor, I decided to stand. What do you hope to achieve in the area over the next four years? As mentioned I feel that outskirts in general were neglected by the former administration. That is why I stood in Hollingdean and Stanmer. With current budget cuts on the way, local communities will have to work even closer together. I want to make sure that local communities in Hollingdean, Coldean and Stanmer can flourish despite that. Social tensions caused by houses of multiple occupancy and traveller groups must be addressed, as well as serious housing problems. I will try that without any ideological view, but focussed on realistic solutions. I will never be able to please all in our ward, but I shall try. Another interest of mine is to bring people of different faiths together, not only to avoid religious tensions but to bring communities together for the benefit of all. I learned from the political experience of my late father that worries and thoughts of residents always should be acknowledged and included in solutions. And realistic small steps are better than no steps at all. What are your interests outside politics? I should call myself Polybios after the ancient Greek historian: a man with many lives. I was a German policeman, a pub manager, a lead agent for a telephone company, a flight attendant. I studied Ancient History and Classical Archaeology. As a Christian of Orthodox faith, my private interest lies at the moment in exploring more of my faith. I am curious whether I am actually the first German councillor since Georgian times. I still am very interested in history, theology, archaeology. And I love travelling and learning about different cultures. I still try to learn Modern Greek and Spanish. How can people contact you? Here are my contact details as councillor: Office: 01273 291623 / Mobile: 07809 100457 Email: Michael.Inkpin-Leissner@brighton-hove.gov.uk Postal address: King’s House, Grand Avenue, Hove, BN3 2LS

At this time of year, our gardens can begin to look as tired as we feel in this heat. Early in the morning is a lovely time to potter though, doing a bit of watering and dead-heading. Ponds - Pond water levels will have dropped significantly. Ideally top up with rain water collected in a water butt or other container. Using rain water helps maintain the natural balance of your pond. If you don’t have a pond pump, pour water from a height to oxygenate the water – vital if you have fish. If you’re lucky enough to have water lilies, remove decaying leaves as they can create an oily film on your pond. It’s also worth keeping an eye out for our friend the snail – and I don’t mean water snails. The common garden snails in my garden seem intent on heading in for a munch and a swim. The swimming part is obviously a little ambitious and the adventurers need to be hooked out, as decaying animal matter is not a good thing for your pond – again, this is another cause of an oily film. On a brighter note, enjoy the sight of an array of dragon and damsel flies. See if you can see any tiny ‘froglets’ on their journey to adulthood, when hopefully they’ll go on to feed on the slugs and snails. General - Now’s a good time to trim back hedges. Remember, if practical, it’s best to use secateurs on the larger leaved shrubs such as Aucuba or spotted laurel. Shears or hedge trimmers will leave lots of half-leaves that will brown and look grotty. A few minutes dead-heading and cutting back tattylooking plants is well worth the effort. Also, remember to feed container plants and keep an eye out for vine weevil. Blackfly seems rife right now, and if you’re not squeamish these can be squashed. Alternatively spray with a solution of washing up liquid, as the blackfly and greenfly won’t like it, but it does minimal damage to other insects, like bees and moths. If you feel spraying with insecticide is the answer, avoid spraying directly onto flowers. This

We know loads of you are really looking forward to Together The People in Preston Park...here is the Fiveways resident behind it...
Fiveways Face... Alex Murray Alex Murray grew up in Fiveways and is one of the directors of the new Together The People festival, to be held in Preston Park on 5th-6th September. Do your family still live in Fiveways? The family as a whole is now scattered throughout the UK but I still live in Fiveways. My first son was born a few years ago (in the same hospital as me) and we even had our NCT classes in the same place on Florence Road that I went to nursery school. I still absolutely love this part of Brighton; it’s beautiful, has a lovely atmosphere and is a great place for us to now start our own family. What are your favourite memories of the area? How long do you have?! I have great memories of lost summer evenings playing in Blakers and Preston Park and of course the Southern FM Party in the Park events when I was growing up; the good vibes at these events crossed with the family and community atmosphere of the Preston Park and Fiveways area, and the musical direction and output of our other events company One Inch Badge are pretty much the backbone of what created Together the People. What have you been up to since growing up? After studying at Sussex University I went on to found the Brighton-based events company One Inch Badge which now organises over 300 events around the UK for such artists as The War on Drugs, Bastille, Bonobo, Macklemore, Haim, Of Monsters and Men, The Kooks, The Maccabees, Levellers, Bellowhead and many more. One Inch Badge also manage the live interests of the seminal Brighton venues Concorde 2 and The Haunt. Tell us more about the festival… Together the People is a 5,000 capacity greenfield, non-camping, music and arts festival taking place in Preston Park, Brighton on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September 2015. ebrate Music, Food, Community, Film and Arts within the city of Brighton by delivering a high quality, creative, family friendly and socially aware event accessible to all. Performing at this inaugural event are Super Furry Animals, Jose Gonzalez, Levellers, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Public Service Broadcasting, Billy Bragg, Lucy Rose, Roots Manuva, Lucy Spraggan, Ghostpoet and many more. There is also some great kids programming with Cat in the Hat and Horrible Histories both performing live at the event! As well as “the incredible moving picturehouse” from Duke of York’s. How can we get tickets? There are lots of ways to get tickets for the event. Locally you can pop into Resident Music and get tickets or online at www.seetickets.com. Tickets are £75 for adults for the weekend, £40 for children between 11 and 15, and free for under-11s (they still need to get a ticket from the outlets). Day tickets are also available.

BOOK REVIEW

Our monthly book review by Fiveways book reviewer Gary Mepsted...
The Human Factor by Graham Greene Vintage Classics, paperback, £8.99
Having searched high and low, well, high anyway, for a recently published book worthy of bringing to your attention, I’ve failed miserably. The publishers’ lists appear to be bulging with delights, and our (very good) local Waterstones immediately assaults the senses upon entering. The publishers’ lists appear to be bulging with delights, and our (very good) local Waterstones immediately assaults the senses upon entering. However, I’m immune to such shallow blandishments and I’ve had to trawl my own bookshelves for this month’s offering which is Graham Greene’s late novel “The Human Factor”. “The Human Factor” is quintessential Greene. All the themes that are hardwired into his earlier novels are present and correct: betrayal, love, a queasily shifting morality, secrets, deception, hypocrisy, abuse of power. Secret Service employee Maurice Castle (yes, the surname is symbolic) handles semi-important information from various African countries whilst looking forward to his retirement. He lives with his wife, Sarah, and her son, whom he’s adopted, in the London suburbs. Castle finds his life subject to scrutiny and upheaval when a leak is discovered, a leak which can only have come from his department. Of course nothing is quite as it appears on the surface, and to say more about the elements of the plot would be to spoil the considerable enjoyment that awaits you. (If the names Maurice and Sarah ring a bell, you’re thinking of Greene’s masterpiece, “The End of the Affair”, the truly astonishing and heartbreaking story of the love between novelist Maurice Bendrix and Sarah Miles, the wife of a dreary civil servant.)
The material that binds “The Human Factor” is the kind that John le Carré is used to working with - we immediately think of “Smiley’s People” - and, although le Carré might be subtler in his approach to the intricacies of the spying game than Greene, it is difficult to imagine him delivering such an effective series of emotional punches. Greene is, I would argue, a better writer than le Carré, which is why, despite the novel’s occasional bum note and infrequent whiff of implausibility, it is such a fascinating and compelling read. Greene is on record as saying that he wanted to write an espionage novel free of the conventional violence associated with the genre, and if thrills and gore are what you’re after, you’ll likely come away disappointed. The novel isn’t perfect, but it’s the book’s imperfections - which are easily forgivable - that give it its charm and its character. It had a period feel to it at the time it was published (1978), but this is much less problematic now when anything that occurred more than a decade ago seems like ancient history. “The Human Factor” can, I think, be considered as a bona fide masterpiece by one of the world’s most accomplished novelists. Flying Disk-Doctor
They can be made ahead and frozen - open freeze on a tray once made and before you cook them, and then store in a labelled bag once frozen. Method: • To make the pastry, sieve the flour into a bowl, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs (it can be whizzed in a food processor) • Beat the eggs and cold water together and put 1 tablespoon of the mixture aside to glaze the pasties. • Pour the remaining egg mix into the dry ingredients and mix together to form dough. Wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes. • To make the filling: heat the olive oil in a saucepan with the onion and garlic, cook until soft, stir in the cooked potato and leave to cool.
• In a bowl mix together the cream cheese, chopped herbs, cooked chicken, black pepper, cooked vegetables and the onion/potato mix. • Divide the pastry into 5 pieces and on a lightly floured surface roll each piece into a 20cm circle, using a side plate as a guide. • Spoon a fifth of the filling mixture onto the right hand side of the pastry circle and brush the edges with water. Bring the left hand side over the filling and bring the edges together, then crimp the edges with a fork to seal. • Place the pasties on a baking tray lined with baking paper and brush with the reserved egg mix. Make a couple of small slits in the tops of the pasties to let out the steam and sprinkle with sesame seeds if using. • Bake at 180C/350F/Gas mark 4 for 25-30 minutes. Sarah Stubbs is a local Kitchen Coach, passionate about teaching traditional baking through her locally held cooking lessons and baking demonstration evenings. She also bakes celebration cakes and caters for afternoon tea events. For more information: www.letscookathome.co.uk Facebook: Let’s Cook at Home 01273 646474 / 07905 701386

Lots of good things start in Fiveways and others are based here. Here are two more examples...
Prairie Spirits by Fiveways resident, Tom Barker Tom Barker grew up in Shoreham, studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths (alongside the YBAs (Young British Artists) Sarah Lucas, Gary Hume and Damien Hirst) and worked in television and theatre for many years before moving to Fiveways five years ago.
IPSE (Independent Photography in the South East). All work is inspired by the Sussex Prairies, “one of the most exciting British Gardens to open to the public in recent years” (The Sunday Telegraph). For more information, visit www.sussexprairies.co.uk The show is open from 1pm to 5pm every day except Tuesdays.
Brighton Orpheus Choir We are a friendly group of around 90 members led by conductor Stella Hull.
Since then he has concentrated on returning to his roots as a fine artist. Last year some of you may have seen his first show since leaving Goldsmiths - an interactive installation looking at how we judge our society. ‘If you go down in the woods today...’ was part of the Brighton Fringe set in and around his home, an eco-housing co-operative beside the golf course. This year, ‘Prairie Spirits’, a study of human frailty and the cycle of life, shows at The Sussex Prairie Garden near Henfield, West Sussex, until October. Tom uses found objects and photography to make environmental installations that explore and challenge perceptions of life, asking the viewer to consider our place in this world. The show also features photography-based work by Tom’s sister and mother. Alice Barker, who has brought up her two children in Fiveways for 10 years, graduated from Chelsea Art College and works as an art psychotherapist. Jill Staples, in her ninetieth year, helps run
We rehearse on Wednesday evenings 7.30-9.30pm at Varndean School, off Balfour Road, preparing for two concerts a year (winter and spring) where we perform major choral works, both classical and more modern, with professional soloists and orchestra. We also perform a summer concert of lighter, but no less demanding, works with guest soloists in both Brighton and Lewes. We welcome new members and hold open evenings three times a year - see: http://www.brightonorpheus.org for more details.

The latest fitness article written for us by local fitness expert Marianne Clark...
So You Think You’ve Got Stamina? Not so many years ago, running a marathon was considered to be the pinnacle of endurance sport. The preserve of elite athletes (and those of unsound mind), the marathon was considered to push the very limits of human endurance in terms of both time and distance. Not so many years ago, running a marathon was considered to be the pinnacle of endurance sport. The preserve of elite athletes (and those of unsound mind), the marathon was considered to push the very limits of human endurance in terms of both time and distance. It was hardly possible to imagine any event more gruelling. These days, it has become clear that, with the right training and dedication, even us ordinary mortals are capable of conquering a marathon. This has led not only to a huge increase in participation in marathon running, but also to a search for ever more extreme events. So, if a simple marathon just doesn’t cut the mustard, here are a few more hardcore events guaranteed to separate the merely tough from the really tough. Those of a sensitive disposition may wish to look away now! The Norseman 3.8km swim, 180km bike, 42km run - a Norwegian mountain triathlon which begins in darkness in the middle of an icy fjord. After completing the swim and bike only the first 160 competitors are permitted to

finish the race. The rest are cruelly eliminated just a few miles short of the summit. Arch to Arc Triathlon from London to Paris which includes an 87 mile run, 22 mile channel swim and a 180 mile cycle. Only 9 people have completed the solo challenge to date. Badwater Ultra - a non-stop 138 mile run through Death Valley in Utah in average temperatures of 120 degrees F. The race finishes with an 8,000 foot ascent. Entry is by invitation only. Tough Guy - an extreme obstacle race involving fire, deep icy water, electrocution, barbed wire, heights, bog and more. Participants are obliged to sign a “death waiver” before competing. Jungle Marathon - a 150 mile stage race through the Brazilian rainforest with hazards that include swamps, anacondas and deadly flora and fauna. You need to carry your own supplies. Marathon des Sables - A self-supported 150 mile foot race across the Sahara desert in extreme temperatures that hit 110 degrees F during the day and 50 degrees F at night.
