QUIZ QUESTION ONE:
When referring to a cash machine, what does ‘ATM’ stand for?
fiveways The second in a series of interviews with new councillors in Fiveways...
MEET LOCAL COUNCILLOR THERESA FOWLER Theresa Fowler was elected in May as a Labour councillor for Hollingdean & Stanmer ward. Do you live in this part of Brighton? Yes, I have lived in Hollingdean since a child and my parents still live there as well. I work locally in the craft shop in Fiveways and have got to know many of the local residents in the past 10 years of being there. I have four children, three of which have left school, one is at college and my youngest son is still at Varndean. Tell us about your background... I went to Downs Infants and Junior School and then onto Varndean. What made you want to become a councillor? I wanted to become a councillor to make a difference to my community. I have often listened to the issues people have in this area and I wanted to be in a position to help them. I have also been upset at the growing number of homeless in our city and want to see an increase in a good standard of quality housing that people can afford to live in. What are your interests outside politics? I am passionate about the environment and gave a deputation to the council to ban the mass release of balloons and sky lanterns that kill our wildlife, and I started a petition to ban the production of plastic unless it is recyclable, reusable or compostable -https://tinyurl.com/banplastics2019 - which I will be sending to the Government shortly. I enjoyed helping to plant trees recently in Hollingdean Park and I believe we need to plant more trees to help our environment.
Photo by Brighton & Hove City Council
I recently did a carbon conservation course to help me reduce my carbon footprint. I also did a litter pick in the local woods recently as I am concerned at how much rubbish is endangering our wildlife. You can contact Theresa by emailing Theresa.Fowler@brighton-hove.gov.uk or phone 07562 437605.

fiveways Sad news for Preston Park...
HISTORIC PRESTON PARK TWIN INFECTED BY DUTCH ELM DISEASE One of the oldest elm trees in the country is to be felled after it was found to be infected with elm disease. The Preston Park Twins, which are situated at the north end of Preston Park, are around 400 years old, making them amongst the oldest elm trees in the UK. One of the twins was recently found to be infected with elm disease and will require removal. (By the time you read this, it may already have been removed.) It is likely that the tree became infected late last summer but had not until recently displayed any symptoms. Council contractors started a programme of works on 3rd July to dig trenches and sever the connecting roots that linked the trees together, to stop the disease spreading to its twin. Brighton & Hove City Council is closely monitoring nearby trees so that any further problems can be dealt with. Every summer a battle is waged across the city against a tiny beetle carrying a deadly elm tree killing fungus known as elm disease or Dutch elm disease. Losses of trees to the disease have been manageable over the years thanks to a councilled control campaign. The elm remains the dominant tree
throughout the city, with an estimated growing population of over 17,000 trees. The current hot weather will most likely result in further cases of diseased elms. The council urges residents to report any sick looking elms so that they can respond quickly. One of the most likely ways for a tree to become infected by elm disease is via beetles breeding on elm logs stored in the area. These logs may have been brought in from other parts of East Sussex where there has been a massive rise in trees becoming infected and subsequent logs becoming available. In recent years, there has also been a rapid increase in the number of wood burning stoves being sold in the area, increasing the risk of contaminated wood coming into the city. The council’s arboricultural team offer a free inspection of firewood and other timber. Similarly, if you have an elm tree in your garden that may be dead or dying, they are happy to come out and inspect it free of charge. To contact the team, phone 01273 292929 or email: arboriculture@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

QUIZ QUESTION FIVE:
Which European country has the longest coastline?
fiveways An article from Fiveways Playcentre in Florence Road...
FIVEWAYS BY NAME, FIVEWAYS BY NATURE... If you have lived in this area at any time over the last 50 years, the chances are you know Fiveways Playcentre. Tucked away at the bottom of Florence Road, accessed by a bunting-strewn pathway, Fiveways has been a nursery and playcentre since the 1960s when a group of local mums, led by Deirdre Martin, took the playgroup they had set up themselves out of St Augustine’s Church Hall, and onto the site where it still is today – having raised all the money to build the original hut themselves. That hut was meant to last 10 years; with love, care and more fundraising, it lasted for 40! From its earliest beginnings, Fiveways – a registered charity, not a council-run or private nursery – has raised money in every way it could to get going and keep going – from jumble sales to sponsored swims, fashion shows and fireworks to fairs and even, way-back-when, hot air balloon rides! Something about Fiveways has always galvanised the community to put all their creativity and determination into making sure this homely, warm-hearted nursery has kept on keeping on for more than 50 years. Challenges and change: All nurseries struggle, and Fiveways is no exception – it is a notoriously tricky business, with an everchanging clientele, subject to ongoing social, political and funding changes. Current pressures include the slowing birth rate, fewer young families moving into the area because of rising house prices, and the impact of having free childcare hours promised but not properly funded by the government. Fiveways’ commitment to providing exceptional standards of care and opportunities for all children means that we are in a perpetual drive to raise funds, apply for grants and find evermore creative ways of staying afloat.
PAINTER & DECORATOR Paul Robertson Insured Referenced Reliable 01273 240160 07961 125069
Ultimately, Fiveways survives as a charity because of the love people have for it, and within it. A great outdoor space, a lovely natural playground, homecooked meals, creative crafts and cooking; and staff, children and parents who don’t want to leave – all means that you’ll still see the same staff when your children go to afterschool club there, and have parties at the weekend, that you did when they were babies coming in for ‘Play and Stay’ sessions. Looking to the future: Things are changing – longer daytime sessions, breakfast, afterschool and holiday clubs – the nursery still offers something special for every child and family. Just tell us what you need. Fiveways Playcentre, between 8-10 Florence Road, Brighton BN1 6JD Telephone – speak to Pat or Grace on 01273 500257 Email: 5ways@talktalkbusiness.net

GENERAL BUILDING 01273 530977 / 07554750499
Amanda Wray of Loder Road runs an eco-holistic cleaning business, Little Miss Do It All, specialising in domestic cleaning with good energy. www.lewisbyardplastering.co.uk How long have you lived in Brighton? I have been in Brighton for seven years now. How did you come to set up Little Miss Do It All? I was a single mum and creative. I loved the flexibility and was more of an active person. It was a satisfying job for me as I could finish the job, go home and focus on my passions and have quality time with my daughter. I suffered from chronic back pain and went on a healing process; shortly after I decided to grow the business with the idea of creating a holistic platform for cleaners to feel supported in every way, as I felt I needed to be at the time. How does Little Miss Do It All differ from other cleaning businesses? I offer training systems for all cleaners to take care and be conscious of their bodies, good rates, health programmes and a sense of community for them to feel part of a team. Now with the ‘Go Green’ package we are doing our bit to help the planet, providing green local products via a refill system; clients benefit from discounted local green products and our LMDIA Holistic Services including Thai Massage Therapy, ‘Vital Development’ Dance Workshops, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) workshops and more. Cleaning is a humanitarian act which is therapeutic for both cleaner and client. Tell us more about your alcohol-free ‘Vital Development’ Dance workshops... A POETRY HANDBOOK BY MARY OLIVER
I thought I’d concentrate on poetry this month, having spent the last few weeks talking about it with my students.
I’ll kick off with a practical guide, Mary Oliver’s “A Poetry Handbook” which first appeared in 1994. Oliver, for those unfamiliar with the name, is a Pulitzer winning American poet who died in January of this year. She took as her theme the natural world and those aspects of humanity which separate us from animals. Check out her gorgeous poem, ‘Wild Geese’. In “A Poetry Handbook”, Oliver sets out to illuminate how poems are built, their architecture and the space they inhabit. Meter, rhyme, form, diction and, perhaps most importantly, sound are examined without any hint of dryness or didacticism. To illustrate her thesis she draws on poets such as Robert Frost, Elizabeth Bishop and many others. Oliver’s book is the ideal starting point for new poets and those readers interested in poetry. Although instructive and designed as a tool for learning, I don’t see this as a writing manual per se. There are no exercises to complete (a definite plus point as far as I’m concerned). The meditative feel mitigates against the hardcore ‘do this, don’t do that’ approach which you find in so many creative writing texts. “A Poetry Handbook” should be on the shelves of all those who love poetry, as should the two volumes of Mary Oliver’s new and selected poetry. Mary Oliver, “A Poetry Handbook”. Harcourt Publishers Ltd, paperback, £11.18.

COLLECTED POEMS 1978-1999 BY CRAIG RAINE I wanted to pick some actual poetry to go along with the above title and, after much debate, I’ve settled on Craig Raine’s “Collected Poems 1978-1999”, which shows Raine to be one of the best, and most influential, British poets since the war. A bold claim, certainly, but one which I think is wholly justified. It’s a rare poetry collection which you can open at any page and discover something to confound and delight. Raine enables the reader to see the modern world, the world most of us inhabit, in a dazzlingly fresh and inventive light. Commonplace objects can never be viewed in the same way once you see them through the lens of Raine’s poetry which is shot through with wit, pathos and laugh out loud comedy. There is nothing portentous or po-faced about Raine’s verse, despite the intellect and sophistication which lies at the heart of it. This is poetry everyone can enjoy, even those who might have seen themselves as allergic to it. This is a collection to inspire, renew, and to last a lifetime. Craig Raine, “Collected Poems 1978-1999”. Picador, hardback, £20.00.

QUIZ QUESTION NINE:
What does ‘AC’ stand for when used on a button on a calculator?
fiveways Hannah from the Pet Shed gives her advice for pet owners...
PET PROBLEM CORNER... Two of the biggest challenges we have at this time of year are keeping our pets cool and hydrated. Pets can quickly overheat and it is not always obvious that it is happening. Dogs pant to cool down, cats lick their coat and, as rabbits and guinea pigs can’t sweat, the only way to keep them cool is to ensure they are kept in the shade, allowed access to drinking water and can also be provided with a covered, frozen bottle of water, left strategically in a run or hutch. It goes without saying that you should never leave a pet in a hot car but you can also use cooling mats for those times when going in the car is unavoidable. For dogs cool coats and bandanas (just add water) when out and about help reduce temperatures. At home pets will often lie on cool stone or tiled floors and cool toys such as those that can be soaked in water (to encourage hydration) or frozen also help. You could also freeze a Kong filled with your dog’s normal wet food or other treats or fill a bowl with treats, veg and even a toy and top with water. Freeze and then turn out onto the grass for hours of cooling fun!

Did you know that, in warmer weather, dogs should be drinking 50% more than on a cool day. That means that the average 20kg dog should drink 3 bowls of water per day. Sometimes dogs need encouragement to drink and products such as Slurps, an organic beef or chicken flavoured drink with omega 3 fish oils, can help with this. Finally, know the signs of heat stroke - excessive or loud panting, extreme thirst, vomiting, a bright red tongue and pale gums, skin around muzzle or neck that doesn’t snap back when pinched, thick saliva and increased heart rate. If you see these symptoms do please get your pet to the vet. Hannah is the current proud pet parent of 15 including her dog (Bourbon, a regular at her shop), 3 cats, 2 snakes, turkeys, chickens, snakes and a tortoise and a guinea pig. Luna Beach Cinema is returning this summer to Brighton beach from 31st July to 18th August - grab yourself an ice cream, crack open an ice-cold drink and enjoy some fantastic films on the beach! Musical treats coming up include “The Greatest Showman” (15th August) with Hugh Jackman as circus owner PT Barnum; “A Star is Born” (31st July & 12th August); “Grease” (10th August) and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2nd August, with a sing29 along version on 17th August). Family favourites include “The Incredibles 2”, “Moana”, “The Lego Movie 2”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” and “Mary Poppins Returns” and more, as well as this year’s blockbusters “Dumbo” and “Aladdin”. “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” (4th August) is one of a few special films for Pride weekend. It’s a comedy-drama from 1994 starring Terence Stamp, Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving as two drag queens and a transgender woman travelling across Australia in a tour bus. Another perennial favourite is romantic dance film “Dirty Dancing” (9th August), with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, and if you fancy a sing-along with your friends, how about “Mamma Mia, Here We Go Again” (31st July & 10th August). A very fitting film to watch on Brighton beach is “Quadrophenia” (7th August), with Phil Daniels, Sting and Leslie Ash in the story of Mods and Rockers brawling in Brighton. Or if you’re a lover of action films, you might prefer “Top Gun” (13th August) or “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (14th August).

An annual event in Preston Park...
NEW BINS FOR THE SEAFRONT
MAGIC OF THAILAND FESTIVAL
The city’s seafront could soon have 300 new bins in a bid to increase recycling rates and prevent plastics from ending up in the sea.
17th & 18th AUGUST The Magic of Thailand Festival, formerly known as Brighton Thai Festival, takes place this year on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th August in Preston Park, from 10am to 7pm.
The bins will have three separate sections in different colours, with two that reflect the city’s seafront heritage - Brighton Borough blue for plastic bottles and cans and Hove Borough maroon for glass. The third section will be black for ordinary rubbish. The new bins will be spread out across the seafront from Saltdean to Hove Lagoon, with the greater concentration being in the busiest areas. They will replace the present street waste bins. There is already a trial bin on the seafront next to the rebuilt Shelter Hall. Although the bins can take plastic bottles, empty cans, glass or rubbish, they should not be used for barbecue materials as these can create a fire hazard. There are though special barbecue bins along the seafront near the sections of the beach where barbecuing is allowed. It is expected that the first bins will be placed along the central beach area, with the rest being rolled out soon after. If the bins prove successful, they may be used throughout the city.
You can expect to see live cooking demonstrations, authentic Thai food stalls, Thai boxing demonstrations, ladyboy shows, children’s rides, the “I’m British, Get Me Out of Here!” eating competition, a Thai traditional costume parade, Thai beer garden, traditional Thai music and dancing and Thai massage. Tickets are available online (at www.magicofthailand. co.uk) for £4 per day (limited online price) or on the entrance gate for £5 per day. Children under 15 are free. Dogs are welcome on a short leash.
