News from the Fiveways Traders Association..
Fiveways late night Christmas Shopping Between 5pm-8pm on 4th/5th December
It’s been a whole year since the first Fiveways late night shopping evening and Christmas is fast approaching. Fiveways Traders Association has organised an even bigger event for 2014, spread across the two evenings of 4th and 5th December, and a day of events on Small Business Saturday on 6th December. Many of the businesses will be staying open until 8pm on the 4th and 5th. We hope it will be a fun outing for the family and put you in the mood for Christmas. Stall holders will be setting up all around the main shopping area, selling homemade gifts, Christmas decorations, food and accessories. It is an opportunity to support your local businesses, and use the community shops in a fun, festive atmosphere. Each business has donated a prize for the Small Business Saturday raffle to be drawn on the 6th December; tickets will be on sale on the 4th and 5th. There are some great prizes up for grabs, so don’t miss out. Small Business Saturday is a grassroots, non-political, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in Decem-

ber each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. As a community of small businesses in Fiveways, we know that our success depends on you, so we would like to say a big thank you to all our customers for your support in 2014. Across the two evenings there will be food and drink to sample, including roast chestnuts and mulled wine, tasty tapas and churros, jams, chutneys, mince pies and other festive fare. No need to eat before you come out - keep some space free for giveaways, tasters and free samples! Many businesses will be making space inside and outside to host local makers, bakers and crafts people. OhFishilyHealthy will be staying out late on the Friday to join the celebrations, and Santa is at Wigwam Toys on the 4th. Should you wish to post your letters to Father Christmas, he will be bringing the North Pole postbox with him and leaving it with us for both evenings. We look forward to seeing you between 5pm-8pm on 4th/5th December. We have a selection of marquees and will be going ahead whatever the weather! With news of the annual St Matthias Christmas market...
St Matthias Church Christmas Market For the past 50 years or so, traditionally St Matthias Church Christmas Market has been held on the third Saturday in November in our church hall in Hollingbury Park Avenue. This year we have decided to make some changes: to change the venue from the hall to the church in Ditchling Road; to revise the date to Saturday 13th December; to re-vamp the overall theme. The aim: to hopefully attract more people. Several people have commented over the past couple of years that “It doesn’t feel very ‘Christmassy’ going to a ‘Christmas’ market in the middle of November.” The market will be open from 10.30am through to 3.00pm, with many stalls selling Christmas gifts, homebaked cakes and savoury items, toys, Fair Trade etc. There will be competitions, and the traditional Grand Draw with many prizes to be won including a £250 cash prize. Refreshments and lunches will be served, as well as Gluhwein and mince pies. Father Christmas will be there with free sweets for children. There will also be an opportunity to purchase a ticket for £2.50 to go towards providing a Christmas dinner for homeless young people in our city through The Clock Tower Sanctuary, a voluntary organisation with whom we have established a firm supportive link since our Children’s Church Nativity last Christmas, with the theme “What can you bring to the table?” This received a generous response and we have supported the sanctuary throughout the year with monthly themed gifts of food, toiletries and clothing. At St Matthias we are constantly striving to reach out to, and serve, the community around us, not only at Christmas but throughout the year. Our annual market provides a good opportunity to come along and meet us and at the same time support your local church to enable us to keep our doors open for all who come to us in any kind of need, as well as providing the more traditional services to the community by way of marriages, baptisms and funerals. In all of this we need your

LOCAL AUTHOR
9 Award-winning Brighton author Amanda Sington-Williams is back with a gripping new psychological thriller...
Amanda Sington-Williams
Just Two Weeks
Here we feature the latest novel by Fiveways resident Amanda Sington-Williams. Amanda has lived in the Fiveways area for nearly 20 years and in her own words she absolutely loves it! Her husband, Dave Williams, is in the Fiveways Artists Group, so she has made a lot of good friends locally as well as through her writing groups. Concerning Fiveways, Amanda says, “Sometimes I think it’s about time I moved somewhere else, but can’t think of anywhere I’d rather live!” Here is a synopsis of her latest work… After being made redundant, Jolene Carr travels to Sri Lanka for a twoweek break in the sun. On the first day she meets Raquel, another hotel guest. Little does she realise that this apparently innocent encounter will lead to terrible and lasting consequences. After a frightening incident Jolene hits a conspiracy of silence from the locals and over the rest of the holiday she feels herself slipping into a vortex of fear. Back home, the nightmare continues and she is convinced that Raquel is stalking her. Her hippie mother and her partner Mark try to convince her she is imagining it all. Gradually all certainties become fluid and treacherous as her past begins to unravel. How much fear and betrayal can one person take? Just Two Weeks is a tense psychological thriller, which keeps the reader guessing to the very last page. It is the winner of the IPR Agents Pick. Author Amanda Sington-Williams comes from a family of writers and, after living all over the world, began writing full time in 2004. Her first novel, The Eloquence of Desire, was published by Sparkling Books in 2010 and has been translated into Turkish. Amanda won an award from the Royal Literary Fund for this, her first full-length novel. Many of Amanda’s short stories have also been published including Growing Pains, A Mother’s Love, Two Orchids, Unseasonable Weather, The Zoo Keeper, and The Woman at Number Six. Amanda has an MA in Creative Writing and Authorship from Sussex University and teaches Creative Writing in Brighton. She lives in Brighton with her husband, the artist David Williams. Just Two Weeks is available from 11th November priced £7.99 paperback, £2.99 e-book. For more information or to arrange an extract of the novel, please contact Amanda directly at amandajanewilliams1@yahoo.co.uk or call on 07717 718147.

In 2006 Tom Donovan and Simon Doherty started a small publishing house, Tom Donovan Editions, dedicated to producing high quality books about the First World War. Their aim was to produce books that were “collectible” by military history book lovers who would usually only buy rare antiquarian books. The books they produced in their “Scholars’ Collection” combined high production standards, academic importance and rarity (editions are limited to only 300 copies) and they quickly built up a small but loyal following. Their most recent publication in this collection, The Memoirs of Sir James Edmonds, who was the British official historian of the First World War, was selected in the BBC History Magazine as one of the ten best books published for the First World War centenary. Tom and Simon are both involved with the Chattri Memorial Group who organise an annual service of commemoration for the Indian soldiers who died in Brighton between 1914 and 1915. They have also published two books on the Indian Army and have recently written and published a third book called The Indian Corps on the Western Front: A Handbook and Battlefield Guide. This book is aimed at the general reader as well as military historians and provides a background to the Indian Army in 1914 as well as descriptions and battlefield guides for the ten battles in which the Indian Corps were involved. It also covers hospitalisation of the wounded in Brighton and other south coast locations. ROOF & FIREWALL Specialists Have you got damp in the corner of a bedroom or along the ceiling of an upstairs wall? Nine times out of ten it’s faulty lead flashings and firewalls causing these problems. The majority of Brighton homes are at least 100 years old and so are their firewalls. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.

GARDENS
17 17
Brought to you each month by Fiveways gardening expert Lisa Attwell...
Fiveways Gardens... December 2014 Gardening is not always a tempting prospect at this time of year. It’s quite likely to be cold and wet, and there are preparations for the festive season to think about. Time, then, to decide whether to tidy the garden or leave it as it is. Traditionally, autumn is the time for clearing away what remains of your herbaceous perennials in your borders. These days, however, more of us have become interested in the environment and in more naturalistic ways of gardening and feel it is fine to leave these summer plants standing to enjoy their structural features. Take Sedum spectabile ‘Brilliant’ for example. This is a clump-forming upright plant with fleshy green foliage and bright pink flower heads. In autumn the flowers mellow to a dark red and by winter they will have faded altogether, but they can still be enjoyed for their striking form, especially when dusted with frost – you never know. Many other plants can be enjoyed for their form at this time of year including Echinacea purpurea, Phlomis, Eryngiums, Achilleas and many grasses. By not over-tidying your garden you will also be helping beneficial wildlife to get through winter. Maybe you’re not mad about creepy crawlies, but I bet many of you have a soft spot for ladybirds. Given they can devour up to 5,000 aphids during their lifetime, they deserve a home in your garden. You can help them hibernate by providing a cosy habitat where they can hide out until spring. I’ve noticed loads of them coming inside – far more than I’ve ever seen before. I read recently that they seek out the same place they hibernated last year... Back in the garden though, leaf litter and log piles are good homes for all sorts of critters. If buying a ladybird house is a step too far, you could just tie together small bundles of hollow stems.
Wishing you all a merry Christmas Best wishes, Lisa
M: 07957 751 218 lisa@lilybud.co.uk
So, with all this time you have saved by not tidying, you can instead put your feet up and browse the plant catalogues or think about presents for green-fingered
friends and family. There are some great gardening books available for armchair gardeners, and one of my favourites is ‘The Bold and Brilliant Garden’ by Sarah Raven. It has some stunning photographs and has endless suggestions for bright and colourful plants in every area of the garden. Or, for comprehensive advice on which plants go together, look no further than the RHS ‘Encyclopedia of Planting Combinations’ by Tony Lord and Andrew Lawson. For junior gardeners, you could treat the kids to their own trowel and fork set; these are widely available online. Alternatively, the National Trust produces wildlife detective kits. For ethically-minded consumers I would recommend www.green-shopping. co.uk, which has an extensive range of books, tools and toys for grown-ups.

RECIPE
23 23 The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah Stubbs
Christmas Cranberry Orange Scone Wreath These moist sumptuous scones are filled with the wonderful festive flavours of cranberries, orange zest and cinnamon and make a perfect Christmas afternoon tea. Ingredients: 340g self raising flour 85g butter (room temperature) ¼ teaspoon salt 30g caster sugar 75g dried cranberries 225ml milk Grated zest of 1 large orange 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 egg, beaten Topping: I tablespoon sugar and ½ teaspoon cinnamon Method:
• Preheat the oven to 200C or 180C fan oven. • Take a large piece of non-stick baking paper and draw a 14cm circle in the centre of it. Place the paper on a large baking tray. • Place the flour, cinnamon and salt into a bowl and rub in the butter until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the cranberries, sugar and orange zest. • Pour in the milk and gently mix to form a soft dough, turn onto a floured surface and knead lightly to bring the mixture together. • Roll the mixture out to a 1 ½cm thickness and cut out scones using a 6cm pastry cutter. Gather up the trimmings and cut some more; you will need 10. • Place the scones around the outside edge of the circle drawn on the baking paper so that they are just touching each other to form a wreath shape. • Brush with some beaten egg and sprinkle with the sugar cinnamon topping.

• Bake for 18-20 minutes until well risen and golden brown. • When the scones are cool, slide onto a serving plate or cake stand and lightly sprinkle with some icing sugar. To make the wreath, lightly paint a few sprigs of rosemary with egg white and sprinkle with caster sugar to give that frosty feel! (This can be done a few days ahead and stored in a cool dry place but not the fridge.) To finish off your Christmas scone wreath, place a bowl of jam in the centre and the rosemary around the edge, finish with a few glacé cherries to add a festive feel and serve with whipped or clotted cream. I wish you all a Happy Christmas! Great local success story from the Fiveways Playcentre...
Fiveways Playcentre’s Living Wage Award Employer FIVEWAYS PLAYCENTRE has been announced as the winner of the Living Wage Champion Awards 2014 for the South East Region. The awards, co-ordinated by the Living Wage Foundation, recognise Living Wage Employers that have made great contributions to communities and industries by implementing and celebrating the Living Wage. The awards are part of Living Wage Week 2014, a national celebration of responsible pay, running from 2nd - 8th November. Living Wage Foundation Director, Rhys Moore said: “Congratulations to FIVEWAYS PLAYCENTRE on being named the Champion Award winner for the South East region. With 1,000 employers now accredited, it is wonderful to have FIVEWAYS PLAYCENTRE leading the way in South East England. The leadership of responsible employers is making a real difference to families and communities across the UK. Thank you very much for celebrating the Living Wage.” Fiveways Playcentre Treasurer Keith Appleyard said: “When we adopted the Living Wage in November 2012, we discovered that Fiveways Playcentre was the first nursery in the whole of the UK to become an accredited Living Wage Employer. We have always recognised that in many ways Brighton can be just as expensive as parts of London, so, not content to adopt the Living Wage rate for the UK outside of London (£7.85), we have been able to reach 95% of the Greater London rate (£9.15) for our NVQ3-qualified staff.” Fiveways Playcentre Manager Veronica Larocque said: “Living Wage accreditation has helped to attract and retain staff; turnover is less than 10%, and the primary cause of leaving is more likely to be maternity leave rather than going to another employer. Publicising the Living Wage as a benchmark that we strive to exceed means that staff morale is even higher.” The Living Wage Foundation offers a recognition mark for employers that commit to paying the Living Wage. There are now over 1,000 accredited employers.
Please mention the FIVEWAYS DIRECTORY when responding to adverts
The Living Wage is an hourly rate set independently and updated annually. It is calculated according to the basic cost of living using the ‘Minimum Income Standard’ for the UK. Decisions about what to include in this standard are set by the public; it is a social consensus about what people need to make ends meet. Employers choose to pay the Living Wage on a voluntary basis. It enjoys cross-party support, with public backing from the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. One Champion Award winner has been named in each region of the UK. The awards were judged by an independent panel of community leaders from the Citizens UK Living Wage campaign and in total 75 organisations were shortlisted for the awards.
