QUIZ QUESTION ONE:
The name Valentine originated in what cultural language?
fiveways The theatrical spirit is alive and kicking in the young people of Fiveways..
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS AT VARNDEAN SCHOOL Varndean School students will (once again) take to the stage in February with their production of ‘Little Shop Of Horrors’. This fun-packed musical comedy is full of over-the-top characters and upbeat songs that will make you laugh out loud - and who doesn’t want to see a singing plant? The cast is made up of over 80 students from Year 8 to Year 11, and the performance will star Paddy Hall, Lois Howard-Walsh and Lola King. As a school, Varndean is known for its inclusive extracurricular opportunities, with performing arts being just one example of these. Indeed, the school has recently been recognised and awarded the title of Centre of Excellence for Character Education by the school improvement charity Challenge Partners. Other 5 examples of how students can stretch and challenge themselves outside the regular curriculum include a strong student leadership team and student voice, citywide leading participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, representation in various county and national sports events, participation in arts festivals such as the Artists Open House which exhibits GCSE work, a comprehensive enrichment programme including a dedicated enrichment week with home-based, national and international courses and student-led charity work. In this year’s show, student volunteers are helping out in all areas. They are not only on stage but are also performing in the band, working on the set, offering backstage support such as helping with lighting and sound equipment, and will be part of the front of house team. The huge amount of student involvement contributes to the feeling that this production really represents the school and student body as a whole. There will be three performances of Little Shop of Horrors: •

QUIZ QUESTION TWO:
In what year did Valentine’s Day be declared an official holiday?
fiveways Great news regarding the Velodrome....
FUNDING PACKAGE AGREED FOR PRESTON PARK VELODROME British Cycling and Brighton & Hove City Council have jointly finalised the funding package which will allow safety improvement works to take place at the Preston Park Cycling Track. The track was closed to competitive cycling in 2015, after users identified concerns. Throughout last year, representatives of British Cycling met with council officers in a bid to progress repair work as quickly as possible. With the funding package now agreed, work on the track will commence early this year. The work is scheduled to be completed in the spring. 9 The total cost of the works is £160,000, most of which is being funded by a grant award from British Cycling, with the remaining £50,000 coming from section 106 funding contributions from planning applications. John Mills, British Cycling Coaching, Education and Development director said: “We are delighted to have agreed a partnership funding package for the work which will see this track return to full operation in the spring.”
Park velodrome is a much loved part of our city’s history, being the oldest cycling track in the country. The funds will be put to good use to replace the fencing and carry out minor repairs. The track is used by riders of all abilities and after the repairs are completed everyone will be able to enjoy it, knowing it is a safer and refurbished place to cycle. It will also be wonderful for the Track League to return as it is a great community event every week.”
The cost of the scheme is lower than originally anticipatCouncil leader, Warren Morgan, said: “This announcement ed, meaning more funding will remain for investment in is excellent news for the cycling community. The Preston the rest of Preston Park in line with its management plan.

QUIZ QUESTION FOUR:
What does the word Valentine stand for or mean?
fiveways Local Action Team chair David Alderton highlights a consequence of the introduction of the new controlled parking zone...
VIEW FROM THE LOCAL ACTION TEAM The council has recently confirmed that the parking scheme devised for Fiveways is going ahead. The target date for its introduction is April 1st. So what will be the effects? First and foremost, there will be fewer parking spaces for residents. Typically around 1 in 10 spaces will disappear, although on some streets this figure will be higher, with a corresponding increase in street furniture. The impact will extend beyond parking though, into the community. I was recently speaking with Dave Brooks, who is the Churchwarden of St Matthias Church, which will now find itself sandwiched on both sides with restrictions. According to the proposed plan as it currently stands, the 15 entire length of Hollingbury Park Avenue is to be designated for permit holders only, except for a small area that could accommodate possibly three cars, located immediately behind the church and providing free parking for one hour only. The whole of Ditchling Road at the front of the church is being reserved exclusively for permit holders. For anyone visiting the church for a service, it will be impossible, even if they were fortunate enough to find an unoccupied free parking bay in Hollingbury Park Avenue, to use this, as any church service lasts for longer than an hour. On many occasions, particularly when there are weddings, baptisms and funerals,

there can be as many as 200 people in church, some of whom will have travelled long distances, who will now discover from April that there is absolutely nowhere to park in the vicinity. But it is not just about attending services. The volunteers running St Matthias Church work very hard to benefit the wider community, with the church hall being hired daily by a varied range of organisations such as Keep Fit, Zumba, Guides and Brownies, and it is also used as a polling station. A number of these groups have already stated that, once the new parking regulations come into force, they will terminate their regular bookings as they and their members will not be able to cope with the parking situation. This, in turn, will impact significantly on the income that the church receives from these hirings, which are vital to ensuring that it remains open. Those elected representatives and others who have been so vociferous in calling for the introduction of this parking zone have seemingly done absolutely nothing to recognise the church’s need. While they may only attend on polling day, the fact remains that this location is an important community facility in its own right. This rather begs the question as to whether they would prefer to see the loss of this community space, with the church being converted or demolished, so flats and apartments can be built on the site instead. If not, this issue needs to be addressed, instead of ignored.

fiveways Meet the man in charge of your local PCSOs...
NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICING TEAM INSPECTOR PAUL RANSOME How long have you been with Sussex Police? This is my 20th year as a Sussex police officer. I have served in most parts of the county and came to Brighton four years ago. I am in charge of Hove and East Brighton Neighbourhood Policing Teams which consist of supervisors and a number of Police Community Support Officers who are responsible for your area. What is the best part of your job? 17 to Quite simply, the people. I have been lucky enough work with some excellent officers and police staff over my career. You need a sense of humour to do this job and an ability to deal with almost anything. I have met some superb examples of public spirited people over the years too and continue to do so within my role in Brighton. I have also met a number of non-public spirited people who continue to impact on the lives of others; my job is to stop them.
What are the challenges that you face?
How can we help you in your work?
Policing has changed and in order for us to look after the public we must change with it. Police and the public can all remember ‘the good old days’ or were they? We must prioritise our work based on threat, harm, risk and vulnerability and can’t continue to do the ‘nice to do’ things. We have to get the most out of every officer and work efficiently to ensure we make a difference to people’s lives and keep them safe. We cannot always get it right but we should do what is important well.
This is the really important bit; the simple answer is support us by calling in suspicious activity or provide evidence so that we can deal properly with suspects and offenders. I am a big believer in positive action whether via diversion schemes or court, but I am frustrated when we don’t have the evidence to prosecute. Please help us to make Brighton a better place to live and work.
What are your interests outside work? Sadly my football career is coming to an end and I have recently taken up football refereeing. I am kicking myself for waiting so long as I thoroughly enjoy it.

fiveways directory January 2016
fiveways Welcome to the February edition of Fiveways Gardens.
FIVEWAYS GARDENS FEBRUARY 2016 Many of you have fruit trees in your gardens (a lot of the Fiveways area was orchard, prior to the house building in the late 1800s and early 1900s). Some of you still have a few of these gnarly old originals, often full of canker, but still giving lots of fruit – and character. Others, of course, have been planted much more recently. Either way, if you have apple or pear trees, before they start into growth is the perfect time to prune them. There are some good “how to” videos on the internet, or for bigger trees that are in need of rejuvenating, do call in a professional. If your garden is looking bleak and has been for the past 21out few months, it’s worth thinking about sorting this for next year. A carefully chosen plant grown for winter interest, such as a Sarcococca, Daphne or Viburnum, and some bulbs will make a big difference. Recently I drove half a dozen of these plants to a client’s garden and the floral perfume that filled my car was quite delightful. In a small front garden, one planted close to the gate or front door will cheer you for several months. These plants are generally slower growing than others and harder to propagate, so a decent size one will set you back around £40 or more, but if chosen and planted well, it should give you years of joy.
Another great plant to consider but which needs a large container of ericaceous soil (available anywhere that sells compost) is witch hazel, or Hamamelis. Available in shades of red, orange and yellow, they look particularly good grown against a dark green hedge, but in truth, are star performers on any sunny patio. Many varieties have wonderful scent too, a real bonus on a warm day, when you might be outside clutching a hot mug of coffee musing on what to do. Most witch hazels are naturally large shrubs, so they’ll need a very generous container and lots of space. Or search around for a dwarf form. Late summer and autumn flowering Clematis can be cut back to about a foot or 30cm above the ground. If this sounds a bit drastic, cut less off, but beware the scrappy, woody, bare stems that result from not hard pruning this sort of climber. Best wishes Lisa

fiveways Your monthly book review by BBC reviewer Gary Mepsted...
REACHER SAID NOTHING LEE CHILD AND THE MAKING OF MAKE ME BY ANDY MARTIN It’s only January but I think that I can declare, with confidence, that this will be the strangest book I’ll read/review this year; and I mean strange in a good way. Cambridge academic Andy Martin, in an act of literary anthropology, has observed - up close and personal - bestselling thriller writer Lee Child working on his latest novel, “Make Me”. If, like me, you’ve never read a Lee Child book or, again like me, having dipped into a couple and decided they’re not for 25is not you, your pleasure in reading “Reacher Said Nothing” likely to be less than that of a hardcore Child fan, so fascinating is the book’s premise. Much of Child’s take on the writing/creative process is absolutely on the money; aspiring novelists would do well to give some serious thought to his thesis. In many ways “Reacher Said Nothing” reminded me of Stephen’s King’s “On Writing”. Whilst I personally find King’s novels impossible to get through, “On Writing” is as close to a masterpiece on its subject as makes no odds. It must be said, though, that “Reacher Said Nothing” is not a creative writing manual as such, it is a very close analysis of one author’s struggle to write a novel

from first word to last. Whilst Child’s exalted position means that anything he writes will achieve print, it is enlightening, and indeed heartening, to see that, having already written nineteen novels, Child continues to drive himself hard. His standards remain extremely high; he will spend huge amounts of time agonising over a sentence or a single word. Although I, and others, might take issue with his prose style, or lack of, no one can claim that Child is lazy or careless in the execution of his craft. Andy Martin proves to be a consummate spy, assiduously following Child’s erratic and stressful progress towards his novel’s conclusion. Their exchanges are witty, wide-ranging and surprisingly erudite. Martin rarely succumbs to episodes of gooey self-indulgence and, when they do occur, such passages can be quickly negotiated. We’re all voyeuristic to a certain degree and there is something compelling about being allowed entry to an inner sanctum. “Reacher Said Nothing” is a work of literary criticism like no other, and both Lee Child and Andy Martin deserve praise for making such a venture possible.

QUIZ QUESTION SEVEN : Love messages were first sent on cards during what century?
fiveways The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah Stubbs...
CHOCOLATE FUDGE TRAY BAKE These rich chocolate squares with a fudgy chocolate topping make the perfect Valentine’s Day treat! If you have resolved to have a healthy new year these are perfect to pop into packed lunches or munch on after going to the gym! You can swap the ingredients to vary them and it is a great way to use up the Christmas dried fruit and nuts.
Method:
• •
• •
• • •
27
Line a 9” x 9” cake tin with non-stick baking paper, letting it hang over the sides; this allows you to get it out of the tin more easily. Heat the oven to 170C / 160C for a fan assisted oven. Grease a baking tray and line with baking paper; I used a 23cm x 32cm. If you use a smaller tray the cake will be deeper and take slightly longer to bake. Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the cocoa powder; whisk until the mixture is smooth. Whisk the eggs and sugar in a large clean bowl for several minutes until the mixture is pale, creamy and has increased in volume. Stir in the slightly cooled chocolate mixture and the vanilla essence. Gently fold in the flour with a large metal spoon but try not to over-mix and lose the volume. Pour the mixture into the prepared tray and cook on the centre shelf for about 20-25 minutes until the top is crisp but the middle is still soft. Remember, if you use a smaller tin to get deeper squares, the cooking time will be a bit longer.
• •
• •
Leave the mix to cool in the tin. To make the topping, finely chop the chocolate you can do this in a food processor - and place into a bowl. Warm the cream up to just below boiling point (if you boil it the mixture will separate) and pour over the chocolate. Mix together until you have a smooth glossy mix. Pour over the cooled cake and spread evenly. Whilst still wet, pour over sprinkles if you are using them. When set cut into squares.
Of course these chocolate squares are too delicious to be saved just for Valentine’s Day so you can vary the decorations to suit any occasion and they will be popular with everyone whenever you serve them! Sarah Stubbs is a local Kitchen Coach, passionate about teaching traditional home baking through her locally held lessons, workshops and baking group. fiveways Coachwerks is a local creative hub in Hollingdean Terrace. This month it’s the turn of the darkroom...
THE BRIGHTON COMMUNITY DARKROOM AT COACHWERKS The Brighton Community Darkroom, originally the conception of photographer David Parker, situated within the independent enterprise hub that makes up Coachwerks, is run on a not-for-profit basis to enable people to have affordable access to a black and white darkroom where they can develop and print film or create images using various alternative processes. It is a valuable art studio to have locally in Brighton, and with the rebirth of darkrooms nationally it enables accessibility to what was once thought of as an endangered species. We hope as a photographic community that the darkroom will allow people interested in analogue photography to try or carry on using it in whatever way suits their artistic photographic intention. 31 The darkroom has two enlargers allowing negatives from 35mm to 5×4 inch to be printed. The darkroom is well stocked with chemicals and we have a variety of trays allowing prints up to 20×24 inches to be printed, plus all the usual darkroom tools to take you through the process of negative to print, including many Paterson developing tanks, reels etc. We welcome additional pieces of equipment from new users. If you are new to analogue photography, inspired by this article to get your Leica out of the loft, or for those whose skills may be just a little rusty, and have a passion to produce original dedicated prints, we offer a comprehensive or a more simple induction, dependent on your experience, which runs through the basics and can be arranged with one of our regular members. You can become a regular user for just £25 per month, which potentially gives you unlimited access during each month to the darkroom by using our online calendar to book yourself in for a darkroom session. What’s great about this darkroom too is that we also accommodate casual users who may be just interested in using the darkroom from time to time or who want to try it out after discovering their love of analogue photography.
GT
We try to meet as a group on a regular basis to share ideas and discuss darkroom improvements; our next wish list item is a negative drying cabinet, so if you feel enthused and can help do get in touch! In the meantime, if you would like to become a regular or casual user please contact us by emailing the darkroom at: brighton-community-darkroom@googlegroups.com or for further information, look at our website at: http://brightondarkroom.org.uk/ By Ann Petruckevitch Jane Woodrow & Rachel Entwistle

fiveways Regular fitness advice from local personal trainer Marianne Clark...
HOME EXERCISE KIT TO BOOST YOUR FITNESS REGIME There can’t be many people now who are unaware that regular exercise is key to long term health. It’s not the only factor, but it is a significant one. But whilst regular exercise is great, (far better than none), daily exercise should really be your goal. Of course, for most, time and money won’t allow daily PT or gym sessions. But you can complement your main exercise at home, in a few minutes daily, with a few affordable and versatile pieces of equipment. Here is my selection. Gym / yoga mat - Protects your floor from sweat and provides a comfortable base for super-effective core exercises like press ups and planks. Approx £6.99. Swiss ball / gym ball - The unstable platform increases the difficulty and effectiveness of core exercises in particular. Try sit ups, crunches, jack knives, hamstring curls. Approx £7.99. Skipping rope - Skipping is great for leg strength, toning and for cardio fitness. A rope with weighted handles will also increase upper body effort. Use boxing drills like double foot and single leg skips. Approx £8.99. Hand weights, kettle bells (medicine balls) - Moderate

weights are effective for developing lean muscle. For the upper body try biceps curls, front and side raises with hand weights. For the lower body and core try squats and lunges. Kettle bells are especially good for a greater proportion of the muscle through dynamic movements Approx £6.99 - £30 depending on weight / type. Resistance band - For the uninitiated, these are long silicone rubber bands which can be pushed, pulled or stretched to provide resistance for an almost infinite variety of exercises. They are exceptionally versatile and highly portable and great for strengthening, toning and flexibility across the upper and lower body. Approx £15. Foam Roller - If you suffer from tight or sore muscles, a foam roller can simulate some of the benefits of deep tissue massage, and is an indispensable piece of kit to help muscle recovery and prevent injury. Approx £15 - £25. If you’re not certain about how to use your equipment most effectively, then consider getting a personal trainer to plan a routine, but you’ll also find plenty of resources online.
