WELCOME

We trust you had a lovely Christmas and we would like to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year! Due to printers being closed over Christmas, I am actually wishing you that well before the festivities have even started so it does feel a little strange. That said, New Year is a great time to reflect on the year just gone and make plans for the up-and-coming 12 months, so write down where you want to be this time next year and stick it to the fridge and see how close you can get! In the meantime we have no radical changes to the magazine this month, just the usual mix of local items. We are however formulating plans to freshen the publication up this year both in terms of how it looks as well as content. If you get this edition through your door before New Year’s Eve, have a great celebration; if you get it afterwards we hope you have recovered! Here’s to a great 2015!! Distinguished guest opens new-look 01273 530977pub / 07554750499 A special guest was the first to pull a pint at the newly refurbished Fiveways pub on Ditchling Road. Jeane Lepper, councillor for Hollingdean and Fiveways, was invited to open the new-look Fiveways on Wednesday 10th December, following its £150,000 transformation which included a complete makeover inside and out. www.lewisbyardplastering.co.uk

The pub, which is owned by Spirit Pub Company and was previously known as the Stanmer Park Tavern, reopened this week and received a complete make-over, introducing a décor with some new signature pieces of furniture and contemporary fixtures. The bar has been completely revamped, as will be the menu and the product offering, including a specials menu that will change on a regular basis and offer dishes such as Steak & Ale Pie, Sea Bass, Tomato and Mascarpone Risotto, and Vibrant Salad. General manager at the Fiveways, Denis Krawczyk, said: “It was great to have Councillor Jeane Lepper join us for the opening of the pub. As Fiveways councillor she is a true pillar of the community, with a great interest in investments in the village like this. “The opening night was a real success, with great feedback from regulars and visitors alike on the deli-

them. In about late June/July, you’ll find a lovely crop of salad potatoes that you can just dig up as and when you want them. Easy, huh? If the whole crop’s dug up by the end of July, why not use the space to grow a range of gorgeous late summer flowers – Rudbeckias, verbenas, asters, grasses etc, that will keep you smiling through the rest of summer and well into autumn. I was at a meeting recently with the council Parks department in Preston Park and I’m chuffed to report that there’s a strong commitment to planting some banks of wild flowers in the park and some native shrubs and trees. Both of these measures are great news for us and local wildlife. Happy days

Pelotas all offer a range of exceptional kids’ clothes, toys, and collectables that are guaranteed to get the young (and young-at-heart) excited! Brighton Naturally and Brighton Apothecary focus on natural products that are good for your body and for your soul. Ubu Books, Jack Hill Tools, and Objet D’Art carry used books, tools and antiques for those that like their shopping to have a bit of history. One-of-akind gifts and homewares can be found at Shaboutique and Nature’s Presence. Local foodies will find everything they need for their recipes at Mari’s Deli, Foodshed, Love Food, Real Patisserie, The Baking Society, Principal Meats, Crabs and Lobsters, Pacta Now, 18 Grocery, The Fruit Shop, The Chili Shop and Mather’s Ice Cream. The 12 glass-fronted studios on the first floor overlooking the market plaza house a range of working sculptors, painters, designers, jewellery-makers, engineers, and more. Partially Obscured, Alison McGechie, Sew Fabulous, Open Arts and Eve Taylor Smith all offer workshops to help you unlock the artist within. And the cafés! To sustain yourself for a full tour of the market you might need to stop in for a Greek platter at Kouzina, a courgette, lime and pistachio cake at The Flying Saucer, Bangladeshi, Goan and Indian delights at Spice of Life or a falafel pita with garlic houmous at Smorl’s. Or, if you are really up for it, you could attempt the Big Breakfast Challenge at The Streets Café! The market is also home to a rich and varied group of pop-up traders that come and go in the market’s big central plaza and a range of visiting markets like the Brighton Vintage and Antiques Market (1st and 3rd Sundays of the month) as well as Brighton Craft Alliance (8 Feb & 8 Mar), Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair (22 Mar) and The Fairy Tale Fair (29 Mar). The market is a real boon for the London Road area. How amazing to have such a community-minded space where we can support local producers and shop with a clear conscience. Not to mention...yum!

PARK NEWS

Here is an annual summary from the Friends of Blakers Park looking back at 2014 and forward to 2015...

New Year’s Resolution for Blakers Park From its launch in 1989 The Friends of Blakers Park has grown into a local institution. The park is a lovely place so it is a pleasure to work on its behalf with the council and with Fiveways neighbours. Over the last year our gardening group has continued to work its magic. The volunteers meet on Tuesday afternoons and the banks of perennials and shrubs, as well as the new planting around the clock, are all their own work. Once again Sally, of Dishy’s Café, has made a huge difference to the park with regular café openings and by supporting events like the Halloween Party and Christmas Carols. Our Community Picnic & Summer Fair was particularly successful last year. The weather was kind; we had over 40 stalls and hundreds of attendees. In association with Stanford Avenue Methodist Church we welcomed FareShare, Greenpeace, Stanford Community Garden and many more. The East Sussex Fire Service’s engine was very popular and another highlight was a fiercely contested auction to win a Sussex County cricket bat! Our event plans for this year include an Easter Holiday Fun Day and another Community Picnic which will take place on Saturday 20th June 2015. A key resolution for this year is to build a more con-

nected community around Blakers Park. We’re delighted that neighbours Simon Bottrell and Sue Korman have joined the committee to take this forward. They have previously worked together on several community engagement projects and are now planning an information panel for the park. It will look something like this: We want this to be a collaborative project. What do you think should be included? Do you have any photos we could use? We are particularly interested in any from the 1930s onwards and we can scan them if they are not digital. We would love to hear from any neighbours, Fiveways businesses, church groups, sports groups, local historians and anyone who knows about birds and wildlife in the park. We are also very keen to have input from parents of the young children who use the playground. If you have any photos of the park or would like to contribute any ideas, please call Simon on 07901 916900, or email Sue friendsofblakerspark@gmail.com. Gary Mepsted’s recommended reading for 2015....

Sombrero Fallout by Richard Brautigan Winnie the Pooh by AA Milne Life or Death by Michael Robotham Apologies to my faithful reader for my absence last month. The demon work kept me off these pages. By way of compensation I’m offering three recommendations this month. Let’s kick off with Richard Brautigan. Canongate- bless ‘em - recently reissued several of Brautigan’s novels and, for my money, “Sombrero Fallout” is easily the best of them. Brautigan is often, unfairly, lumped in with those other literary and artistic members of the hippy counter-culture of the sixties and has remained stuck there. The truth is that Brautigan is a genius whose novels, whimsical, playful, metafictional, deeply humane and wildly funny, deserve a much larger audience than they currently command. He writes like a dream, and I use the word ‘dream’ advisedly. I shan’t bother to summarize the plot which would give you little idea of the novel’s power and scope. I’ll just urge you to investigate him as soon as possible. I can’t guarantee it’ll be love at first sight, but a very well-read friend of mine who’d not heard of Brautigan and whomI wasn’t convinced would adore him, read “Sombrero Fallout” at my suggestion and is currently buying up second-hand copies of his other novels on Amazon. He is an author to whom one can very quickly become addicted. He may well prove to be your literary drug of choice. My next recommendation is “Winnie the Pooh” by AA Milne. Milne was one of our greatest writers and the

tales of Pooh Bear and his many friends are worthy to sit alongside any of the literary giants. When I recommend Pooh to my creative writing students with the likes of Tolstoy, Hardy, Woolf, etc, they always assume I’m joking, but Milne’s command of language is as accomplished as any of them and he’s a damned sight funnier too. “Winnie the Pooh” is that rare and wonderful thing, a book which can be read and enjoyed by people of all ages. If you’ve only read Pooh to your own children, perhaps halfheartedly as a means of getting them to sleep, or have bypassed him altogether through not having children, please pick up a copy of “Winnie the Pooh”, set aside any prejudices you may have and prepare to be utterly enchanted. I’vejust bought a copy as a Christmas present for my novelist girlfriend whose only acquaintance with Pooh is through the Disney movies. She’ll be a better writer for reading Milne, and she’s already exceptionally good. You’ll be a better person for reading him too. Just time to squeeze in, literally, Michael Robotham’s new book, “Life or Death”. His new stand-alone crime novel set in America is, despite the terrible title, phenomenally good.

New Dawn based in Havelock Road with an article about the beauty industry...

Poisonous Truth about Skin Care Wow, I cannot believe how quickly the year has flown by. I am sure most of you will agree. I have had a great year here at New Dawn with lots of new treatments now on offer such as Mesotherapy, the popular stretch mark treatment, and my new addition, the Galvanic Spa home kit. The most impressive and daunting fact I have learned this year, during my endeavour to provide non-surgical alternatives to anti-ageing, has been how label-led we are as a population. I have been in a fortunate position to experience first-hand just how poisonous many branded skin care products are, and to partner with Nu Skin, a company which is ethical, whose products are scientifically proven to reverse the signs of ageing on a genetic level and make no false label claims. If you were told to use washing-up liquid on your skin, would you use it? Yet I have discovered that some bigname brands have an equal acidity to Fairy Liquid. We are constantly bombarded about what we should and shouldn’t put into our bodies; however, people do not question what they are putting on their skin, the biggest organ of the body, choosing instead to believe the advertising claims of the product.

Please mention the FIVEWAYS DIRECTORY when responding to adverts

Would you like to see for yourself just how poisonous your skin care products are and understand the damage they are causing to your body? Once you see how dangerous these products are, you will want to throw them in the bin. If you are interested in putting your products to the test, book an appointment now, 20% off Nu Skin products when purchased on the day.

GARDENS

21

Brought to you each month by Fiveways gardening expert Lisa Attwell...

Fiveways Gardens... January 2015 Welcome to the January edition of Fiveways Gardens. Happy New Year to you all and here’s to 2015 giving us a hot, sunny summer with acres and acresof blue skies – last summer was great, but ever the optimist I’m sure we’d all cope with an even lovelier one! Until the lazy days of summer, there are a few things to get on with. For instance, how about a new garden project for this year? Something I’ve been interested in doing for several years now, but haven’t had the opportunity to, is a living wall. Well, luckily for me, a new client has just given us the go-ahead to create one in her small courtyard garden in the centre of town. I was at a workshop run by the Association of Professional Landscapers at Coblands Nurseries in November, where they show-cased an innovative design for living walls that are readily applied to the smaller gardens and courtyards that we regularly overhaul. My client is in her 70s and is as mad about plants as I am, and was thrilled to see this modular panel system that will allow her to plant up to 49 individual plants in each square metre of wall. She’ll be able to swap plants in and out as she chooses. I obviously couldn’t resist the temptation and have ordered us one here at Lilybud, to trial too. I’ll be planting ours up in spring and I’ll share anything of interest with you, and maybe some of you will get inspired to add to the small but growing collection of living walls and green roofs in Fiveways. I think these green modular panels are going to be a fantastic solution to bring life and interest to those side returns that are often a little uninspiring, as they’re equally good in shade or sun. With the leaves off the trees and shrubs it’s worth checking for dead, damaged or diseased branches and pruning them out. With less foliage in the way at this time of year, you can see more clearly what you’re doing. If the plant in question is too big for you to deal with, then get a gardener in and get them to incorporate a general tidy up too. Lots of gardeners have little work at this time of the year so you shouldn’t

Please mention the FIVEWAYS DIRECTORY when responding to adverts

have trouble finding someone good – experienced and qualified. Tasks that you know are a good idea, but somehow never get round to doing, could be handed over – maybe think of it as a post-Christmas treat for yourself. Cleaning pots ready for spring and summer planting, cleaning, oiling and sharpening tools, clearing dead leaves from ponds, lawns and paths, sorting the compost and even tidying out the shed are all jobs that you could ask a gardener to do. Redefining lawn edges is also well worth the effort. There are some great products on the market that are excellent at keeping your lawn area clearly defined. There are edges out there for all budgets, including plastic, timber, brick and steel. Best wishes Lisa

QUIZ QUESTION EIGHT: In the 1963 film The Great Escape, what names were given to the three tunnels?

RECIPE

27 The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah Stubbs

Healthy oat raisin and walnut cookies These delicious, filling cookies are packed with healthy ingredients, great for enjoying a sweet treat without spoiling any of your new year’s resolutions! Ingredients: 60g butter, room temperature 55g sunflower oil 2 eggs 160g maple syrup 75g self raising whole wheat flour 100g white self raising flour 1 teaspoon salt 150g porridge oats 65g chopped walnuts 75g raisins Method: • Pre-heat the oven to 190C or 170C fan oven. • In a bowl, cream the butter until pale and creamy. Add the oil, eggs and maple syrup, beating well after each addition. • In a separate bowl sift both the flours and salt. Add the flour to the butter mixture and stir. If the mixture is too stiff add 1-2 tablespoons of water to soften the dough. • Stir in the raisins and chopped walnuts. • Line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper. • Drop heaped dessert spoons of the mixture onto the lined tray and cook for approximately 8-10 minutes until just browning around the edge. • The cookies will still be quite soft but they firm up as they cool. • This mixture makes about 14 cookies.

These cookies make great after-school or post-gym snacks as they are made with healthy ingredients and do not contain any processed sugar. You can also switch the ingredients around, replacing the walnuts and raisins with other nuts, seeds, dried cranberries or cherries. A great way to use up any Christmas baking ingredients that you have left over! News from Wigwam...

Introducing Finn... Following the success of Lottie, Arklu have released another doll, Finn. Sticking to the same principles as Lottie, Finn is an ordinary little boy, not a superhero or a soldier. Children will identify with him as he flies his kite, goes fishing and swimming, plays pirates with Lottie and walks the dog. Many children, boys and girls, like role-play games and, like many parents, I felt frustrated that the only dolls available to my son were sending messages I didn’t agree with. Hooray for Finn! From the age of about thirty, we will notice subtle differences to our skin due to hormonal changes and the effects of our lifestyle. Before considering a more invasive approach, try this natural way for a fresher, lifted appearance at a fraction of the cost! Performed at regular intervals, this seven-stage treatment relieves tension in the muscles of the neck and shoulders, relaxes facial tension by massaging the muscles of the face, stimulating blood flow and oxygen which in turn promotes new cell growth. This forty minute treatment should ideally be carried out (initially) once per week – for a period of four weeks – and then every few weeks thereafter, to maintain both the visible and physical benefits. This is also the perfect quick fix stress reliever after your busy week and/or for a fresher, younger look before an important event. Rejuvenating Facial - 40 minutes £25. MUSIC REVIEW

35 Keith of local lo-fi rockers Les Cactus & the Rumpy Pumpkins offers his monthly musical recommendations...

Les Cactus Recommends...

Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Second Movement by Ludwig van Beethoven, 1813 Well, the festive season is now well and truly over, and for many that means it’s time to get back to the reality of having to earn a living and go back to work. Three cheers! Much of my work ethic and shrewd business acumen appears to have come from my father, Jim. He had a number of different careers throughout his working life, one of which was kick-started by my mother getting pregnant – all plans of being an artist vanished and instead he became a self-employed picture framer, eventually running a workshop and gallery in London Victoria. The work involved a fair amount of driving around London which I think he liked. His hard-nosed business approach and ability to focus on the job at hand with no distractions is perhaps best illustrated by his once enjoying a cassette of Beethoven’s 7th Symphony on the car stereo so much he had to keep driving round the block of the gallery until it finished and he could then park the car and go back into work. He employed a team of highly professional and dedicated workers, one of whom hada fascination for Vikings and worked upstairs in the workshop. One day this man proudly descended the spiral staircase sporting a Viking helmet, sword and shield, all beautifully made out of the gallery’s framing supplies and done during work hours. Another employee who had a reputation for being totally irresponsible asked my father if he’d employ an equally irresponsible friend of his. As anyone in business

knows, first impressions from a prospective employer are crucial. During his first meeting with my father, this gentleman proceeded toget so drunk he had to be carried off to bed. He got the job. The gallery launched the careers of many exciting young painters and there was nobody else in London producing such high quality, specialized, timeconsuming, hand-crafted decorative framing. They were never short of work and had the luxury of having a number of extremely wealthy clients, including Laurence Olivier, Peter Sellers, Joan and Jackie Collins, Max Bygraves, and others to whom money was no object. My father under-charged and the business closed. But even so he still talks very fondly of that period of his working life. My mother does not.
