Your local Fiveways tree surgeon is expanding – and no, that’s not the Christmas pudding! David Morgan-Jones at Tree and Hedge Service is your local Fiveways tree surgeon - based in Ashford Road, David and his experienced and qualified team are well versed in operating in Brighton properties – using their skills and experience to emphasise our trees’ and hedges’ natural beauty and managing to remove large quantities of green waste through our beautiful Brighton terraced properties without a trace! David has been offering his services for 10 years as a specialist tree surgeon and hedge cutter – for the last 4 years these services have naturally expanded to include timber fencing, new lawns, patios, sleeper beds and Astro turf. David says, “It’s always a pleasure to help people create the outdoor spaces they want, and help emphasise a tree or hedge’s natural beauty – and people would often ask us if we could help with other elements of their gardens. It became a natural progression to offer fencing and landscaping services.” So, to reflect this expansion of services on offer, David and his team are changing their trading name from Tree and Hedge Services to Tree and Garden Services. David says “We hope everyone still recognises us as the same team – I’ve told everyone to lay off the Christmas pud this year!” If you would like to contact David and his team to discuss your tree and garden requirements, they would welcome your call on 07960 386 586.

It was taken from rising ground adjoining the railway works looking down on New England and Old Shoreham Roads. PRESTON MANOR ACQUIRES 100-YEAR-OLD ‘HAUNTED’ LEDGER A 1915 shop ledger found bricked up in a jeweller’s wall in Brighton’s East Street has been formally acquired by Preston Manor, following reports that it is haunted. QUIZ QUESTION FOUR: On the morning of the Vietnamese New Year, Tet, what are children not allowed to do?

GARDENS

Here is a great Brighton project...

THE REAL JUNK FOOD PROJECT - BRIGHTON The concept is a simple one: intercept food waste from supermarkets, restaurants, food banks and local businesses that was destined for landfill and use it to feed people who need it, on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis - not just homeless people but anyone struggling financially. The revolutionary ‘pay as you feel’ concept encourages people to think about what that plate of food means to them; if they can’t afford to pay money, then they may want to wash up or weigh some intercepted food or spread the word. 15 The Real Junk Food Project Brighton has been running for just under a year. In this time we have saved over 17 tonnes of edible food from landfill and fed thousands of people. We help individuals who are suffering from social isolation, loneliness and other mental health issues; our community cafés aim to provide a safe space for those who need it. We also are working on providing formal training for our core team therefore improving their chances of gaining employment.

So far we have two weekly cafés and a monthly pop-up,

and a vast number of volunteers to help. We need food, help and support and hungry people to feed. We are a community interest company with the intention of using Government funding to expand and grow. Please get in touch to get involved. We cook a range of healthy fresh dishes from whatever ingredients are available on the day. Our volunteer teams are very creative and most of the dishes are vegetarian/ vegan. The project came about in Brighton after our founder Adam Buckingham saw the project happening in Leeds where the creator of The Real Junk Food Project, Adam Smith, lives, and where they have 23 successful cafés running. Every Friday we run a café from One Church, Gloucester Place. Every Thursday we are at Hollingdean Community Centre and on the first Wednesday of the month we are at The Hive, Stoneham Park, Hove. We also regularly cater for different events all over the city. We recently catered for MPs at The Houses of Parliament as they discussed the Food Waste Bill. We are currently looking for our own premises to run a seven-day-a-week café and community space. If anyone knows of a space that we could use, please contact us: realjunkfood@gmail.com LET’S REALLY FEED THE WORLD.

fiveways A post-Christmas message from our regular book reviewer, Gary Mepsted...

A BOOK IS FOR LIFE, NOT JUST CHRISTMAS Those who know me would agree that I have a bah humbugish attitude to Christmas, a time during which we behave completely out of character, are forced to suffer the company of those we dislike or despise, and gorge on food which no sane person would contemplate ingesting at any other time of year: mince pies, Christmas cake and pudding… Thank God it’s now over. Our aberrant behaviour applies to the purchasing of books too. Christmas represents a bonanza for the bookshops. They are never so crowded with both customers and stock. The problem is that the majority of these customers will probably not be entering a bookshop again until this coming December. A large percentage of the 17 book trade’s Christmas offerings are, frankly, unworthy of being displayed, or even published. Ghost-written autobiographies of minor celebrities with short sell-by dates, sports stars offering their favourite seasonal recipes, gardening tips from superannuated soap stars, etc, don’t really cut it in the long-term satisfaction stakes. You don’t need to be Mystic Meg to know that most books bought as presents will end up unread, and that many have already been despatched to the charity shop. Books seem to have taken over from socks and underwear as a quick ‘n’ easy solution to the perennial problem of what to buy Uncle Ray or Auntie Mabel. ‘Oh, look, this one’s got Benedict Cumberbatch on the cover’, or ‘I’m sure (supply name) would love to take up watercolour painting.’

Here endeth my post-Christmas message. Thank you for listening. I hope you’ve read well and wisely this festive season. Ensure that those you care for do so in 2016.

So this piece is a plea. There are, even during the crazy Christmas period, some fabulous books to be had. Try, next year, to think a little more inventively, a tad more laterally, when buying books as presents, rather than automatically reaching for that gaudy volume by some ephemeral X Factor winner on their twenty favourite ABBA songs. Think seriously about the person/people you’re buying for. It’s not too difficult to find a book that will be truly appreciated and earn a coveted place in the recipient’s library. Plan ahead.

Christmas really might be a good time to acquaint your loved ones with the joys of Proust or Joyce. Don’t give those you care for the equivalent of a greasy burger and a cardboard pocket of limp, pale fries. Go upmarket, go à la carte. They may look at you askance and with a degree of suspicion: ‘Hmm a selection of classic English literature… Thank you.’ But who knows, come Boxing Day night when they can’t sleep due to a surfeit of egg nog and yule log they may be tempted to open Middlemarch, just for a quick look, and the world could change forever.

We still plan to help old friends and new with computer problems, but our New Year Resolution is to reduce the pressure by advertising less. By April, please note our phone number or email address or remember our website. We hope to be helpful for at least another five years, by which time everyone will no doubt be communicating with holograms via Smartbuttons©. Best wishes for 2016.

fiveways Here we have news of a cutting edge beauty treatment now available in Fiveways...

CACI ULTRA NON-SURGICAL FACE LIFT @ THE FIVEWAYS BEAUTY ROOM Here at The Fiveways Beauty Room we are proud to offer the award winning CACI Ultra non-surgical face lift, offering the very latest pioneering technologies which have been voted the most effective anti-ageing treatment available. CACI’S non-invasive treatments can deliver dramatic results without the need for surgery. So what is a CACI (pronounced Kay-see) facial I hear you say! CACI stands for Computer Aided Cosmetology Instrument and has gained the reputation as the finest micro-current machine available. The technology has been around for over 20 years originating from the medical industry and was being used for the treatment of Bells Palsy and facial paralysis caused by strokes. The machine uses tiny electrical impulses (micro-currents) to stimulate muscles in order to tone the face. As a result, muscles are lifted, skin is tightened and fine lines and wrinkles are diminished. The CACI Ultra combines an ultrasonic peel, facial toning and lifting, hydra toning and light therapy stimulation. What you can expect from an Ultra Anti-Ageing Facial

Before

After

Skin is cleansed, then the ultrasonic peeling takes place. This is a handset that contains a ceramic/quartz transducer that is stimulated by an electrical current to vibrate 27,000 times per second – drawing impurities to the skins surface and removing dead skin and debris. This feels much less abrasive than microdermabrasion. We then switch to a double-pronged metal attachment through which micro currents run. These are used to lift and draw up the muscles, All 32 muscles on the face are worked. The CACI Ultras unique wrinkle comb applicator is used to effectively and painlessly plump out and soften deep lines and wrinkles thereby providing a needle free alternative to dermal fillers. A cooling hydratone mask is then applied, which is infused with hylauronic acid. Metal rollers charged with microcurrents then massage the mask over the face, this helps with deep penetration and lymphatic drainage, (which helps with under eye bags and dark circles). 20

fiveways directory January 2016

fiveways For the final part of the facial we use an LED light (blue or red). LED Light Therapy encourages cell exchange and helps stimulate the production of new collagen. Along with anti-ageing, CACI treats acne, scarring and pigmentation and the overall effect is an improvement in skin health.

21

Before

After

Acne occurs when hormonal shifts, like the kind that occur during puberty, cause an over production of oil and cells inside a skin follicle. Together, they form a blockage that plugs the opening of the pore and causes the follicle beneath to swell. This allows for the overgrowth of bacteria normally found on the skin – Propionibacterium acnes (p. acnes) – which produce irritating chemical substances that further fuel the inflammation. The end result is acne. Blue LED Light Therapy can be used to destroy the bacteria that produces the inflammation associated with propionibacterium acnes, but other studies have shown that a combination of red and blue light LED therapy produced quicker results, which is why both are used in the CACI treatment of acne and blemishes. Incorporated in to these treatments, we use Nimue Skin Tecchnology. This brand originates in South Africa and has made a name for itself in the southern hemisphere where it’s popularity has grown throughout Australia and New Zealand. These countries are aware of the level of damage the sun and atmosphere can do to the skin, such as premature ageing, sun spots, blemishes and rosacea. Primarily based around Glycolic, Citric and Lactic acids, Nimue re educates the skin to function as normal. Glycolic acid helps to exfoliate at a deeper level, promotes skin renewal, rejuvenates, smooths fine lines and wrinkles and hydrates. All whilst treating specific skin requirements such as pigmentation, acne and premature ageing. A one off facial is a fantastic thing to have before a big event when you want to look your very best, but for prolonged results a course of 10 is recommended over a 5 week period. I like to think of it as going to the gym, I may not have J-Lo’s body after one gym session, but regular sessions will get me that little bit closer! These facials will be available from 25th January. We will also be offering FREE half face demos so you can really see how amazing this treatment is. The Fiveways Beauty Room also offers a wide range of other treatments such as massage, manicures, tanning, waxing etc. For a full treatment menu please go to www.thefivewaysbeautyroom.co.uk Or why not pop in to ‘Living at Fiveways’ and pick up a menu. QUIZ QUESTION SIX:

Where does the famous ball drop on midnight of New Year’s Eve?

fiveways Brought to you each month by Fiveways gardening expert Lisa Attwell...

FIVEWAYS GARDENS JANUARY 2016 Happy New Year to you all and here’s to 2016 giving us a hot, sunny summer with lots of lovely rain at night time! I was at the Society of Garden Designers annual conference recently and a common theme was the importance of boundaries in small gardens, and now’s a great time to tackle them, because there’s little foliage in the way. They are often neglected, sometimes because they are shared with neighbours, and perceived as potentially problematic. However, those walls and fences are the backdrop that frames the garden. Dark colour walls, fences and linear trellis are very much on trend, with charcoal greys, dark greens and blues and 23 even black most popular. These dark tones recede and can make the space look bigger. The wide variety of greens and other beautiful colours of garden plants look great against a dark background. As a plant-a-holic, I’m obviously a fan of greening boundaries with climbers and wall shrubs, but even with expert attention, this takes years to achieve. January is a good month for having a good sort out and planning for when it gets busy. If, like me, you spent too many irritated moments hunting for twine, bulb planter, plant labels etc through the year, this might be the time to do more than just think about sorting the shed out…. Imagine, you could actually do it! Take a good look at the plant pots and other paraphernalia lurking around in unloved corners of the garden too. Can any of it be thrown out? Free-cycled to someone else? We’re designing an Arts and Crafts style garden for some clients in Denmark Villas at the moment, and I came across that famous quote of William Morris, ”Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” Same goes for gardens... If you didn’t do it before Christmas, it’s worth checking shrubs and trees for dead, damaged or diseased

branches and pruning them out. If the plant in question is too big, then get someone in and get them to incorporate a general tidy up too. Lots of gardeners have little work at this time of the year so you shouldn’t have trouble finding someone good. Tasks that you know are a good idea, but somehow never get round to doing, could be handed over – maybe think of it as a post-Christmas treat for yourself. Cleaning pots ready for spring and summer planting, cleaning, oiling and sharpening tools, clearing dead leaves from ponds, redefining lawn edges, sorting the compost and even tidying out the shed are all jobs that you could ask a gardener to do. Best wishes Lisa

fiveways Here is an interesting local history project...

ORAL HISTORY PROJECT Do you know someone with a story to tell about Brighton in the 1940s-60s? Giddy, a Brighton oral history project, is looking for people who were teenagers during the 1940s-60s to come and share their stories at a series of open workshops – the next one being 20th January 2016, 10am to 2pm, at the Mass Observation Archive at The Keep. The stories will be used to create a two-part digital project, including a smartphone app and an online archive; and an exhibition – all of which will launch to the public in May 2016. The app will take users on a tour of Brighton, with the personal stories acting as the guide to places 25 of interest, offering a history of Brighton direct from the mouths of the people who lived it. Giddy was conceived by Brighton arts collective The Nimbus Group who have received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help young people from Longhill High School in Rottingdean to learn new skills in archive research, curating, conservation and oral history interviewing. Working with the Mass Observation Archive and the Oral History Society, the young people involved will help recruit and interview participants via the open workshops who will share their stories, and then create the app and online archive. Jamie Wyld, co-Director of The Nimbus Group, says they’re looking for people to recount unusual and personal stories: ‘We’ve heard tales of rationing and mods & rockers before, but usually from the perspective of historians and the media. What we’re keen to hear about are stories that young people today can relate to: a first kiss in a dance hall, love in the face of possible German invasion, being gay in the 1950s, and what it was really like to be part of the mod scene here. ‘Each and every generation of young people thinks it’s the only one to have experienced the giddy highs and lows of adolescence – we want to show that this is a universal theme, instilling a greater sense of understanding between young and old whilst preserving some amazing

stories which otherwise may well be lost forever.’ Giddy’s organisers hope those who do decide to come along to share their stories will also take along a photo or other piece of memorabilia associated with that period of their lives. These will be used alongside archive images of Brighton & Hove through the war and postwar decades to create a fascinating online archive for future generations to enjoy. To find out more about how you can get involved, like Giddy on Facebook at www.facebook.com/giddy-brighton, and follow on Twitter @NimbusGrp #GiddyBrighton

QUIZ QUESTION SEVEN : Why do the Chinese light firecrackers around the New Year?

RECIPE

fiveways The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah Stubbs

HEALTHY ALMOND AND APRICOT BARS These wholesome bars are so quick to make and do not even need to be cooked! Ingredients: 300g pitted dates 120ml water 140g nut butter (peanut or almond ) 60g coconut oil 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 50g oat flour ( you can make this by whizzing rolled oats in a processor until it resembles flour) 180g rolled oats 1 tablespoon chai seeds 27 1 tablespoon chopped dried apricots 1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds 1 tablespoon chopped almonds 1 teaspoon cinnamon 40g unsweetened desiccated coconut To press into the top: 50g whole almonds 1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds a sprinkle of coconut

If you have resolved to have a healthy new year these are perfect to pop into packed lunches or munch on after going to the gym! You can swap the ingredients to vary them and it is a great way to use up the Christmas dried fruit and nuts. Method: •

Line a 9” x 9” cake tin with non-stick baking paper, letting it hang over the sides; this allows you to get it out of the tin more easily. Place the dates and water in a saucepan over a medium heat, stir with a wooden spoon for a few minutes until the mixture heats up and the dates soften and form a smooth paste. Add the nut butter and coconut oil to the date paste in the saucepan and gently heat, stir until the mixture has melted and all combined together. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla essence.

New Year Rejuvenation. January 2016 Peaceful Mind Therapy Treatment A blissfully relaxing facial massage and deep, soothing scalp massage Including the shoulders, neck, hands and arms. £25, 45 minutes Alison Robertson MICHT VTCT

07940503001

alison@lavenderroomtherapy.co.uk www.lavenderroomtherapy.co.uk

Add the remaining ingredients and stir gently with a spatula until all the dry ingredients are evenly mixed into the date paste. • Spoon into the prepared baking tin and press the mixture down into the tin using the back of a spoon. For the top sprinkle the extra almonds, apricots and coconut over the surface and again press down so that they are stuck to the top of the mixture. • Pop the tin into the freezer for an hour to set. • Remove from the freezer and lift the mix out of the tin using the overhanging paper. Place on a chopping board and peel off the baking paper; with a sharp knife cut into bars. • The bars are best stored in the fridge; if you are stacking them into a container, put a piece of baking paper between the layers to prevent them sticking together. Wishing you all a very happy new year! Sarah Stubbs is a local Kitchen Coach, passionate about teaching traditional home baking through her locally held lessons, workshops and baking group. Sarah also sells delicious cakes and home baked hampers locally. https://letscookathome.co.uk/blog/ www.letscookathome.co.uk Facebook: Let’s Cook at Home Twitter: letscookathome 01273 646474 / 07905 701386

fiveways Whether you love drawing or just want to try something new for 2016 why not come and join us....

LIFE DRAWING SESSIONS AT COACHWERKS Our sessions are friendly, informal and untutored. With a range of fantastic models, we provide a comfortable opportunity for everyone to practise and develop at their own pace. My own interest in life drawing has developed over the last few years. I have a small stone-carving studio at Coachwerks and really wanted to progress my drawing skills. Therefore, in August 2015, I set up the drawing sessions jointly with Rachel Entwistle (potter) at Coachwerks - as a way of making sure that I, at least, attended a session reasonably regularly and committed 31 to practising on a more regular basis!

“To practise any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow. So do it.” I can still never quite believe how quickly two hours can pass by when engrossed in the art of drawing. I love how it can be so relaxing and meditative, whilst at times deeply frustrating and challenging, yet also energising and inspirational, all in one.

We look forward to seeing you at life drawing soon!

Sessions are usually mixed poses with a tea/coffee break midway through, but we’re very flexible and open to developing to what people want. For example, we could arrange a specific tutored session or play around with different materials. Children over seven who enjoy drawing are very welcome to come too, as long as you‘re happy to make sure they’re ok.

fiveways Regular fitness advice from local personal trainer Marianne Clark...

MORE GOOD REASONS THAN YOU NEED TO MAKE 2016 THE YEAR YOU TAKE UP RUNNING CHEAP: There’s no need for any expensive equipment. All you need is a suitable pair of running shoes, though please add shorts and t-shirt for common decency! SOCIABLE AND REWARDING: Run alone or with friends or family and give yourself the perfect justification for a guilt-free coffee and cake afterwards. As a runner, you also earn the right to refer to your cake consumption as “re-fuelling”. EFFECTIVE: It’s hugely effective for improving cardiovascular function, muscle toning, weight loss and improving bone density. Also highly effective for avoiding unpleasant chores around the house. TIME EFFICIENT: You can run anywhere, any time. Run straight from home and have a great work-out in less than the time it takes to drive to the gym and back. ACCESSIBLE: Running is for anyone who wants to run, whatever your age, ability or speed. If you run, you are a runner.

VARIED: Contrary to the beliefs of some, every run is different because of your route, the time of day, the terrain, the weather, your mood, your musical selections, the conversation of your running companion. EVENTS: Challenge yourself. Whatever your ability or level of ambition, you can unlock a whole new world of fun-filled events. Branch out to parkrun trail runs, relays, mud runs, night runs and more. For your efforts you’ll generally earn a medal, a t-shirt and the right to feel smug and virtuous. MOOD ENHANCING: Running is not all about physicality. It’s a proven energiser and mood enhancer which can benefit the whole household, especially when your kids realise that your run provides an opportunity for some uninterrupted TV viewing. ENJOYMENT AND PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT: Running provides a fantastic personal challenge, sense of achievement and enjoyment. Yes, really! In all my running years I’ve NEVER regretted a run, however tough it was. If you would like to begin running or extend your run fitness in a sociable, local group, come and join Fitso Runners in Preston Park. New run groups for beginners and more experienced runners start January. 1-2-1 training also available. FIVEWAYS FUN...

WHERE IN FIVEWAYS? Where in Fiveways was this photo taken?

Conor's Conundrum Throw away the outside and cook the inside, then eat the outside and throw away the inside. What is it? Answer: See bottom of p25

NEW YEAR QUIZ... Find the 10 questions spread throughout the Directory at the foot of various pages... here are the 37 answers

Last month’s photo: Outside Design Vintage on corner of Osborne and Lowther Roads

1. The Chinese have a lunar calendar and celebrate the new year on the second new moon after the winter solstice. 2. It is said that if a woman gets the first drink, she is guaranteed marriage within the new year. To marry your ideal sweetheart, you must get him to drink from the well before the end of the day. 3. Ecuadorians build a straw man and dress him in the family’s clothes. Then someone writes a last will and testament citing all the faults of the family members. At midnight, the will is read and the straw man burned, thus cleansing the family.

4. You are not allowed to cry! In order to avoid a “bad” year, everyone must be happy on New Year’s Day. Therefore, children are not allowed to cry on this day. It is believed that the one who cries will bring bad luck not only to himself but to his family as well. 5. Starting just before midnight, the temple bells ring-eight times in the old year and 100 times in the new year. This is to cleanse people from the 108 sins they committed in the previous year. 6. Times Square 7. To ward off evil spirits 8. The Romans 9. Return borrowed farm equipment 10. Eat a grape
