WELCOME
Well, at the time of writing England are still in the World Cup and Wimbledon hasn’t even started, so Andy Murray is still in with a chance of retaining his title and it’s all looking good! By the time you read this however, I fear a different story!! So this month what have we? We have an old photo of the area for you on pages 6 and 7, and news of the upcoming Eco Fair at Dorothy Stringer written by one of the pupils. The Pet Shed on Preston Drove have written us an article about things to remember regarding looking after your pets throughout the warmer months. We also have quite a few other bits and bobs with a local connection that hopefully will be of some interest to you. So, summer is definitely here now…have a great time!! The Fiveways Directory Team

Every year we feature the Dorothy Stringer Festival. This year we have an article written by a pupil...
Stringer Festival...Thursday 17th July 2014 Most Brightonians are aware of Dorothy Stringer’s environmental work: its Green Flag Eco-School award; its nationally renowned butterfly haven which was part of the successful UNESCO Biosphere bid; its work for city-wide environmental awareness. It has seemed to be an inherent quality of the school for many years now. However, it’s not until you really get in there and see it for yourself that you realise the extent of Stringer’s work. As the Chair of the school’s Eco Committee, I’ve been able to witness and organise some of the work that goes on behind the scenes. One of the most striking features, for example, is the team of students who quietly give up their time on a weekly basis to help out in Eco Club. It’s not unusual to find them out in the woodlands, down by the pond, or, quite often, sat around a table with mugs of tea, discussing how to spend the next Eco budget or who to send to the next environmental conference. The recent renewal of the Green Flag award has been a great boost to the department, but we’re not planning to stop there. The school’s Junior Leadership Team (JLT) is currently planning to work with the Eco Committee to develop innovative ideas to tackle litter around the school along with a long list of other things on our action plan. The global dimension is a key part of the Eco-Schools philosophy and each year our school runs a trip to Ghana. I was one of the students lucky enough to visit Ghana for ten days in February this year, and was absolutely amazed by the experience, witnessing a culture totally dissimilar to ours. We have close links with Tortibo village and Macrosec secondary school near the Akosombo Dam. We will be welcoming the head teacher and seven students from our link school here in September. We would like to invite you to the Dorothy Stringer Festival of Music, Art, Theatre and the Environment celebrating these links with West Africa. Now in its ninth year, the event brings together the best of the school and the wider community in an evening for all the family, with Romeo and Juliet in the woods, sheep petting and butterflies, live music and art workshops, African food and a Farmers’ Market, competitions and charity stalls, woodland crafts and pond dipping, cakes galore and environmental stalls. Everyone is welcome to this free event, running in the school grounds from 4.30 to 7.30pm on Thursday 17th July. We are always able to accommodate more stalls if you are a charity or environmental/ethical local business. Penny Postgate Foulsham Year 10 Student

RECIPE
9 We are delighted to introduce our new regular recipe sent to us by Sarah Stubbs...
Lavender and orange shortbread cookies A melt in the mouth buttery shortbread cookie flavoured with fresh lavender from the garden. Ingredients: 125g butter- room temperature 30g caster sugar 125g plain flour sieved 65g cornflour 1 tablespoon chopped lavender petals Grated zest of 1 medium orange To finish (optional): 80g white chocolate A few chopped lavender petals Method: • Heat the oven to gas mark 3/ 160C or 140C for a fan oven. • In a bowl mix the butter and sugar together until just combined. • Add the flour, cornflour, chopped lavender petals and grated orange zest to the butter and sugar and combine all the ingredients to form a dough, wrap in clingfilm and chill for 30 minutes. • On a floured surface roll out the dough to about 1/2cm thickness and cut out the shortbread cookies using a cookie cutter. Place on a flat baking tray lined with baking paper.
smooth and glossy. You can melt the chocolate in the microwave but take care as white chocolate can burn very quickly. • Dip each cookie into the melted chocolate then place on a tray lined with baking paper, sprinkling the chocolate with a few of the chopped lavender petals. • Place the tray into the fridge for about 15 minutes for the chocolate to set. These cookies are perfect served on a sunny day with a cup of tea in the garden; they also make a lovely dessert with a big bowl of fresh berries and ice-cream. You can substitute other herbs and spices to this basic shortbread dough if you feel like a change of flavour! If you don’t have any fresh lavender you can buy culinary grade dried lavender to use.
• Place on a wire rack to cool.

Saturday 19 July from 12 to 4pm till 8.00pm Where? Streakers Salon, Preston Drove
When? Saturday 19 July from 12 to 4pm Where? Preston Park, between the clock tower and the Chalet Café The Friends of Preston Park would like to invite you to celebrate our lovely park by joining us at our community picnic. We thought a picnic event would make a refreshing change from our PrestFest day. We know from the crowds that came to our Jubilee picnic in 2012 that an open community event like this can be great fun and is enjoyed by everyone. The day is designed to appeal to a wide range of ages, with an emphasis on the family. So there will be children’s attractions such as Punch and Judy, a climbing wall, face painting and bouncy castle. For the adults we’re providing music from the Hangleton Brass Band and the Silver Sounds Samba Band. We’ll have a hog roast/BBQ and a Pimm’s and real ale tent, and there will be a chance to buy plants. There will also be a brilliant quiz about the park that both adults and children can complete. You’ll be tracking down the answers all over the park. It’s fun - and enlightening! Bring your own picnic and enjoy each other’s company. Don’t forget to bring something to rest disposable BBQs on if you’re having one. We really hope you can come! Kindly sponsored by
10 years ago Jo Grant, who had been working in Streakers as a hairdresser since she qualified, took the plunge and with help from the Prince’s Trust and her parents bought the business from its previous owners. It has a been a wonderful experience running my own salon and I look forward to another ten years!!” “ Please come and celebrate as our guests on Saturday 19th July for drinks and nibbles”.

PET TIPS
13 13
For all pet owners, specially prepared for the Fiveways Directory by Hannah at The Pet Shed on Preston Drove...
Surviving the summer with pets So, we all know the phrase “Dogs die in hot cars”, but what else should we be thinking about to keep our pets healthy and happy during the warmer months? The following are a few tips to consider, but as always let your pet be your guide and if he or she ever looks unwell seek the advice of a professional. • Provide adequate drinking water around the home and when out and about. Change water and check and top up regularly. • Food can go off quickly and attract flies. Don’t be surprised if your pet has a reduced appetite in the heat, and bin any leftovers. • Never, ever leave animals in cars. Even with a window open, the temperatures can soar alarmingly quickly. Also, when travelling by car keep windows open and try to travel at the coolest times of day. • Keep long-haired pets trimmed. • Don’t let pets sit out in the sun for long periods of time. • Walk dogs first thing and/or in the evening. Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun!
• Ensure adequate shade for outside animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens. Never leave a hutch or run in direct sunlight. Top tip: freeze a plastic bottle with water, wrap it in an old towel and place in the run for a hot bunny/guinea to lie against. Do check for leaks, as lying in the cold water could make your pet too cold. • Pay attention to cleanliness. Dirty rabbit hutches attract flies which can in turn lead to fly strike (where maggots infest a rabbit’s bottom). Check your rabbit twice a day and clean with a damp cloth if necessary. • Never leave a bird cage near the window or in direct sunlight. • Ensure fish ponds also have a shaded area and keep fish tanks out of direct sunlight. Keep curtains drawn if necessary. • And, most importantly, know the signs of heat stroke. Watch for excessive panting, extreme salivation, distress and collapse. If this happens, cool your pet with tepid/body temperature water (not cold) and seek advice from your vet. Further information and advice is available online and I have found the PDSA page - http://www.pdsa.org.uk/ pet-health-advice/further-information/summer-healthfor-pets - very useful. Our monthly book review written by Fiveways resident and BBC book reviewer Gary Mepsted. pert Lisa Attwell...
Living With It by Lizzie Enfield. elcome to the Myriad Editions, paperback. £8.99 bruary edition of veways Gardens
I recall reviewing local author Lizzie Enfield’s last novel, Uncoupled, in these pages back in 2012. Now with a new publisher, Brighton-based Myriad Editions, Living With It deals with an incendiary topic, the morally contentious MMR controversy.
The author treats her subject without didacticism or portentousness, exploring it through a group of sympathetic, well-drawn characters who quickly have the reader rooting for them. d, and maybe not so much money to go round, why not give it

This is a darker novel than Uncoupled but no less compelling; the serious and highly emotive nature of its subject gives the story a more sombre hue and it’s to Lizzie Enfield’s credit that this never clogs or slows the narrative. Living With It is a clever, subtle, multi-layered novel which, as a parent, I found both chilling and gripping. You don’t need to have children of your own, however, to find yourself quickly immersed in this rich and complex tale of ordinary people battling extraordinary circumstances.

GARDENS
17 17
Brought to you each month by gardening expert Lisa Attwell...
Fiveways Gardens... July 2014 July’s a bit of a tidying and sorting month, dealing with the early flowering plants that are probably looking tatty by now and thinking of what to fill gaps with. The fresh green leaves that emerged in April and May are looking decidedly browner and crispier. Prime tasks are deadheading, watering and perhaps a bit of staking. In spite of the walls and fences around here, the wind always seems to whip up mischief, and a bit of discreet staking can make a big difference. Consider using stems that you’ve pruned off shrubs as they blend in better than bamboo or plastic poles. Do make sure they’re properly dried out or they might just take root. Cutting some herbaceous perennials back, removing tatty, tired leaves, is often worth it. It lets in plenty of light and encourages a fresh flush of new green leaves, which really freshens up the garden. Plants that will respond well to this include lots of perennials that flower early in the season, such as most hardy geraniums and delphiniums. Feed any of the herbaceous plants that you cut back. In terms of filling gaps, you may find you need a bit more structure and height in the border. Among my favourite shrubs are Japanese tree peonies and I’ve finally found a local nursery that supply a range of them. Southdown Nursery is on the A273 just outside Hassocks. They had about half a dozen varieties when I was out there about a month ago and they were very well priced too. For more variety, a good mail order option is Kelways in Somerset. Plant now for amazing flowers next spring. Given a sunnyish spot and, importantly, shelter from strong winds, they’ll give 3-4 weeks of pleasure with their amazing flowers next April-May. They have great foliage too, so I think they earn their place in our little gardens. If you’re going to be away for a few days or more, your containers will stand a much better chance of survival if you move them to the most shady part of your garden. If you’ve got some way of standing pots in a tray of water, that’s great. As well as water, don’t forget to feed plants in containers – it’s easy to forget. Covering the soil with

a mulch (I use horticultural grit, as it’s a fairly neutral colour) will also do a lot to reduce the watering needed. Mock orange, or Philadelphus, and Weigelas flowered heartily in June and, if you haven’t already, prune them now. Happy gardening. Lisa

Russell Martin goes back to school to open new 3G sports pitch
On Thursday 5th June Norwich City footballer and ex-Varndean student Russell Martin returned to Varndean School to officially open a new 3G allweather sports pitch. Russell, who also plays for the Scottish national team, has generously donated new football strips to Varndean’s year 7 and year 10 football teams, and fondly remembers the times he captained the team here.
thin base layer of sand, will be a tremendous asset to the school. The pitch is used by students during school football and rugby lessons to complement the sporting activities on offer on our Astroturf pitches, athletics field and sports hall and fitness suite. These excellent facilities are also available to the wider community during the evenings and on weekends and accommodate a range of sports clubs. In honour of his involvement in the school the 3G pitch has been named after Russell Martin. Newly appointed Head of PE Calum Thomas hopes that this facility will help inspire the next generation of elite athletes at Varndean School. “It’s great that the Russell Martin 3G pitch will serve as another all-weather surface so that PE staff can continue to deliver high quality learning experiences even when the playing field is out of action.”

As the highest ranked under 18 chess player in the UK, Ezra is taking the next year off studies to become an International Chess Master. He started playing chess at the age of three and, having moved to France at the age of 6, represented France as a junior at the European Youth Championships. He currently has two master norms out of the three required to earn the title. This autumn Ezra will represent England at the same event in Georgia.

“Having put so much work into my chess over the years, I know how great it can be for so many different aspects of life,” says Ezra. “It has helped in some obvious ways, like maths and puzzle solving but it also helps me make decisions in life and it would be fantastic to get my Master title next year before going to University.” Ezra hopes to finance his year through finding corporate sponsors and through giving chess lessons. He will be offering a chess course at Brighton & Hove chess club this summer between the 11- 16th August for both beginners and intermediate players. LOCAL BUSINESS
21 This month we interview owner of local nursery, My First Word Grows Up, Lisa Southon
Lisa Southon
Fiveways Business Owner What is your name and which business in Fiveways do you own?
ment for their children.
My name is Lisa Southon and I own My First Word Grows Up Brighton -a pre-school located in Ditchling Road.
I listened to the 'little things', offering flexibility and letting parents choose when they needed childcare, not the other way round. That's where the inspiration for My First Word blossomed.
How long have you been working in the childcare industry? The story began 15 years ago when I couldn't find flexible childcare for my own children. As a new mum I found there were no choices whereby I could drop and pick up from the local nursery/pre-schools, which is not what you need to hear when you're already overwhelmed juggling your new life/work regime. I began caring for my friends’ children in my own home. I was in my element. Enjoying the experience of motherhood gave me the ability to empathise with the needs of other families who needed an affordable, caring environ-
What do you most like about working in Fiveways? There's a good community, village feel, even though it’s on a main road. Tell us more about the services you offer? My First Word Grows Up Brighton offer quality, flexible childcare, combining the early years foundation stage with an underlying Montessori approach. The setting is nestled beside Saint Matthias Church, and has a secluded garden with a wooden play house and garden toys. The children are encouraged to take in fresh air daily. Inside the setting there's equipment (some Montessori) for the children to enjoy, plus access to the latest technology if so desired.
20% OFF YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT
We provide locally sourced organic food and healthy snacks at little cost. Trips out to local parks and attractions are included in the price. What plans do you have for the future? Although I'm keen to continue to expand and already have another setting in mind, I never forget the important things in life, for example our motto, "Where little things matter", belongs at the top of my list of priorities when it comes to My First Word. High quality childcare is of the upmost importance and is reflected in my staff’s enthusiasm. I'm an approachable, open-minded person, keen to promote new ideas. Therefore I continue to provide guidance and support to my amazing team and to the families with children under my care. What is the most enjoyable part of your job? I have to say the moments when teenagers approach me in the street and remember I looked after them as children. These moments create a warm feeling of self-worth and achievement. How could someone find out more about your business? Please look at our website: www.myfirstwordgrowsup.co.uk or call me on 07789 812020.

ROOF & FIREWALL Specialists Have you got damp in the corner of a bedroom or along the ceiling of an upstairs wall? Nine times out of ten it’s faulty lead flashings and firewalls causing these problems. The majority of Brighton homes are at least 100 years old and so are their firewalls. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.

Les Cactus Recommends...
Five O’Clock Bells in the Morning by Lenny Breau, 1979 My dad’s friend John P worked as a picture framer for much of his life and had a workshop in the basement of an art shop in Victoria. The shop offered a picture restoration service and proudly displayed an old gilt-framed painting in the front window which had a very neat line dividing it down the middle – the left side was brown and dull with age and dirt, while the right side was colourfully bright and vibrant in its newly cleaned and restored beauty. One day John walked downstairs to the workshop to see the restorer hard at work at his craft, scrubbing a canvas vigorously with a large, wet sponge. By his side were a bucket of hot water and a box of Daz washing powder. On hearing John’s footsteps he turned around and put his finger to his lips: “Mom’s the word - must keep up the mystique!” I remember a story of one customer who came back extremely irate. After getting her seascape painting restored, all the seagulls had disappeared. John’s favourite music was jazz. My collection and

knowledge of the genre is pretty thin, although one of my all-time favourite albums is by Canadian jazz guitarist Lenny Breau. I once taped a copy of the album for John but I don’t think he ever listened to it. I don’t know if it was because he had no faith in my musical tastes or whether he just didn’t have a cassette player to play it on. I don’t think I showed him the record sleeve, but if I had done that probably would have put him off - while the record itself contains such sensitive, expansive, intimate, extraordinarily lovely music so as to produce tears to the eyes in weaker moments, the record cover of the version I have is similarly eye-watering but for very different reasons: it’s a shocker. The song Five O’Clock Bells is the title track of the album and to my knowledge is the only time he recorded a vocal. It’s like some gentle anthem for insomniacs and irregular sleepers. I first heard it in Poland where I experienced the worst stomach ache I’ve ever known. If anyone ever tells you that Polish sauerkraut and vodka are ideal digestive companions, don’t listen to them. Please read about a great scheme that has been set up by Macmillian Cancer Support...
Team Up from Macmillan Cancer Support Team Up from Macmillan Cancer Support is a new service for anyone affected by cancer in Brighton and Hove. We noticed that there are plenty of willing people who want to volunteer their time, but they don’t have a lot of it to spare. Macmillan research also showed that some people with cancer and the people who look after them could do with an extra pair of hands around the house from time to time. Sometimes treatment knocks you for six and you’re just too tired or unable to do housework. Sometimes you’d just rather invite people round for a cup of tea and a chat than a dusting session. Sometimes there just isn’t anyone around to ask for help with the small stuff. We wanted to find a way to squeeze some good deeds into the diaries of busy Brightonians, whilst also helping out over-stretched people living with cancer, and carers in the community. Team Up connects people with a bit of spare time with people who could use a hand with housework and gardening. Whether you want to volunteer or get some support, you register online where you can then post or search for tasks in your neighbourhood. As a helper, you can pick up a task whenever you’ve got five minutes spare, there’s no regular commitment or obligation at all and none of them should take longer than an hour.
landscapes & gardens
All our helpers are security checked and we meet them all personally. People signing up can be at any stage in their cancer journey, or looking after someone who is, and you don’t need to have received any support from Macmillan in the past. So if you’ve got a bit of space in your life to help your neighbours out, then we’d love to hear from you. If you’re looking around at a growing pile of washing up and an empty fridge then Team Up can help. Let us start ticking those annoying little jobs off your to-do list so you can focus on what’s important. Find out more and register at www.goteamup.org.uk and tell anyone who you think would like to know about this fab free service. You can also find us on www.facebook.com/teamupmacmillan and www.twitter.com/teamupmacmillan

Dance Art Studio Established in 1995, Dance Art Studio offers 46 classes per week. We have expanded the timetable again in order to offer a full range of dance genres for children and adults. Recent pupils have left to study dance at leading full-time vocational schools; we are proud to have helped them grow from young dancers into mature and talented individuals. We also offer our pupils the opportunity to take an exam under the largest international dance governing body, ISTD. With a 100% pass rate, we aim to continue providing an outstanding extracurricular environment. Our special under-five classes for girls and boys from three years are held in ballet, where children are introduced to some of the very basic movements which are incorporated into mimes, songs and stories, dancing to familiar music with various props that the children are encouraged to bring along with them. Whilst the lessons are taught in a routine to which young children can become accustomed so that they build their confidence, the theme varies on a weekly basis. Our lessons encourage self-confidence and focus on improving dance technique while having fun. Teen Jazz on Thursday evenings is a great opportunity for teenagers to learn high-impact and creative routines in a dance style similar to West End musicals. Groovy Movers is for five to seven year olds on Saturday mornings, and has flourished into a class full of talented boys and girls who can express themselves through rhythm and dance.

Wigwam vouchers
Beauty tip written by Alison Robertson owner of The Lavender Room, Gorgeous therapies for women.
Are you drinking enough? Now that the weather is getting warmer it is important to keep yourself hydrated this summer. The benefits of drinking water are much discussed in the media.
Did you know that you can buy gift vouchers at Wigwam Toys? We now have our new postcard vouchers which can be made up to any value you choose, they come in an attractive gift envelope and fit inside a regular greetings card. A great present option if you are unsure what the recipient would like. Vouchers are valid for 1 year from the date of issue, so there is plenty of time to choose and as our stock changes all the time, they are bound to find something they like. We are working hard on our online web shop which will be live by the autumn, you will also be able to purchase and print vouchers at home from there. Wigwam, 140 Preston Drove, Fiveways. 01273 505504
Water helps to keep you hydrated, which is important for every single cell in your body as it needs it in order to absorb nutrients and expel waste products. Here are some of the lesser-known benefits: Drinking Water Is Good For Your Joints It helps keep your joints strong, healthy and lubricated. Your joints need moisture in order to remain strong and flexible so that movement is smooth and pain-free. Drinking Water Keeps You Looking Young Water is great for your skin, keeping it moisturised, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Drinking Water Helps You To Lose Weight Water suppresses your appetite so you don’t eat as much. It also prevents fluid retention as your body won’t try to retain water if it’s getting enough. Drinking Water Makes You Smarter Water can increase your cognitive function. Your brain needs a lot of oxygen in order to function at optimum levels. Water ensures that your brain gets all the oxygen it needs. Studies show that drinking eight to ten glasses per day can improve your levels of cognitive performance by as much as 30%. Drinking Water Aids Waste Disposal Drinking water flushes toxins from your body – helping your kidneys and liver do their excellent job. So there you have it! Who would have thought that there were so many benefits to drinking the humble glass of water! Cheers! Alison
