LOCAL NEWS

The first in a series of interviews with the local councillors in Fiveways...

Meet Preston Park Councillor Kevin Allen Kevin was elected in May as a Labour councillor for Preston Park.

Do you live in the Preston Park area? I live in Reigate Road, the southern end of which leads on to Highcroft Villas, the boundary between Withdean and Preston Park wards. Whilst Prestonville is very much my home turf, I know all parts of the ward pretty well, having previously served eight years as a Preston Park councillor (2003-2011). What is your background? I was born and grew up in Croydon, studied at London University and worked for the British Council. During the course of my career I was involved both in educational aid in Africa and also in more traditional cultural relations in Germany, Israel and Russia. What made you want to become a councillor? I joined the Labour Party in my teens. It was natural that, sooner or later, I would want to stand for election. But that had to wait many years. Employment with the British Council and my peripatetic lifestyle meant that standing as a local candidate was not a practical possibility. But after taking voluntary early retirement in the mid-90s I got stuck into local politics, standing as a candidate in Patcham in 1995 and in Westdene the following year. In 1999 I won a seat in Marine. Four years later, with the redrawing of ward boundaries, I took the opportunity to stand in a ward closer to home. In 2011 I lost my Preston Park seat. Rather than giving up I thought why not give it another go? What will be your approach as a councillor? Unfortunately it seems the government will continue to squeeze the budget for local government. Our council will have to decide how to use ever-diminishing resources according to clear criteria of need. In order to explain the reasoning behind what will be difficult and some-

times controversial decisions and, more importantly, to get residents’ views on priorities I intend to maintain close contact with community groups. In addition I shall be available to represent and support individual residents in their dealings with the council, for instance over planning applications. What are your interests outside politics? Music, literature, languages, travel. Hardly an ‘interest’ in the same sense, but my seven grandchildren certainly give me a lot of pleasure. How can people contact you? The easiest way is by email: kevin.allen@brighton-hove.gov.uk Letters should be sent to King’s House, Grand Avenue, Hove BN3 2LS My council telephone number is 01273 291057

The Dorothy Stringer Festival of Music, Art, Theatre and the Environment...

Celebrating our Links with West Africa 18 months ago we identified an overgrown area in the school grounds as an ideal spot for a garden. Since then students have been involved in clearing the area and building raised beds. There has now been one full cycle of planting, harvesting and eating vegetables grown in the garden and we would like you to come and see what we have achieved. Students have expressed great pride in their new garden which has been so successful the neighbouring flower bed has also been cleared and planted up with apple trees, raspberries and strawberries. These are now providing free break time treats for students. Sussex Wildlife Trust ran a workshop where students built a mud oven which will be used to bake pitta bread pizzas on the day of the festival. Next to this is the new BBQ built by other students who learnt brick laying skills. Then, using wood coppiced from the school nature reserve, students have learnt the skills of constructing a woven fence. We invite you to visit our school grounds and garden at this year’s Stringer Festival, which brings together the best of the school and the wider community in an evening for all the family. Students will perform Midsummer Night’s Dream in the woods of the school nature reserve, there will be sheep petting and a chance to explore the butterfly haven, live music and art workshops, African food and a

Farmers’ Market, charity stalls, woodland crafts and pond dipping, cakes and environmental stalls. Everyone is welcome at this free event from 4.30 to 7.30pm on Thursday 16th July. We can accommodate more stalls if you are a charity or environmental/ethical local business. Please contact: Rob Sandercock sdk@dorothy-stringer.co.uk

ROOF & FIREWALL Specialists Have you got damp in the corner of a bedroom or along the ceiling of an upstairs wall? Nine times out of ten it’s faulty lead flashings and firewalls causing these problems. The majority of Brighton homes are at least 100 years old and so are their firewalls. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.

GARDENS

15

Brought to you each month by Fiveways gardening expert Lisa Attwell...

Fiveways Gardens... July 2015 July is a bit of a tidying month, dealing with the early flowering plants that are probably looking tatty by now and thinking of what to fill gaps with. Prime tasks are deadheading and watering. The wind always seems to whip up mischief, and a bit of discreet staking can make a big difference. Consider using stems that you’ve pruned from shrubs as they blend in better than bamboo or plastic poles. Do make sure they’re properly dried out or they might just take root! It’s not too late to give some plants a good hard cut back, removing those tired leaves. This lets in plenty of light and encourages a fresh flush of new green leaves. Plants that will respond well to this include lots of perennials that flower early in the season, such as most hardy geraniums and delphiniums. Feed any of the herbaceous plants that you cut back. Mock orange, or Philadelphus, and Weigelas flowered in June, and if you haven’t already, please prune them now. Deadheading (ie taking the faded flowers off) encourages further flowering on many plants. Plants flower to reproduce and, once pollinated, they begin to fade as the pretty petals have done their bit, by encouraging insects to visit with pollen from a suitor plant. The plant then puts all of its energy into making viable seed for the next generation. By removing fading flowers the plant is tricked into making more flowers. In this way, gardeners’ intervention prolongs the flowering season. If you’re going to be away for a few days or more, your containers will stand a much better chance of survival if you move them to the most shady part of your garden. If you’ve got some way of standing pots in a tray of water, that’s great. As well as water, don’t forget to feed plants in containers. Covering the soil with a mulch (I use horticultural grit, as it’s a fairly neutral colour) will also do a lot to reduce the watering needed.

Among my favourite shrubs are Japanese tree peonies. Southdown Nursery on the A273 just outside Hassocks supply a range of them. Plant now for amazing flowers next spring. Given a sunny-ish spot and, importantly, shelter from strong winds, they’ll give 3-4 weeks of pleasure with their amazing flowers next April. They’ve great foliage too, so I think they earn their place in our little gardens. Happy gardening. Lisa

RECIPE

17 The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah Stubbs

Strawberry and White Chocolate Cheesecake Who can resist this stunning combination of white chocolate, cheesecake and fresh English strawberries?

Ingredients: For the base: 250g gingernut biscuits 125g melted butter For the cheesecake: 300g white chocolate 200g pack of full fat cream cheese at room temperature 25g caster sugar 500ml double cream For purée: 400g fresh strawberries 50g caster sugar To decorate: 400g strawberries 50g white grated chocolate This delicious, creamy, pale pink strawberry dessert is perfect for a summer party or get-together; it is easy to whip up the day before or make ahead and freeze. You can vary the fresh fruit, depending what is in season. The cream cheese must be full fat otherwise the cheesecake will not set. Method •

Line a 23cm round deep loose-bottomed cake tin with baking paper on the bottom and sides.

Put the biscuits in a food processer and whizz until they resemble fine breadcrumbs (or put in a plastic bag and bash with a rolling pin until fine). Mix in the melted butter and press into the base of the tin with the back of a spoon. Chill in the fridge.

To make the purée put the 400g strawberries and 50g caster sugar in a small saucepan, gently heat until the sugar has melted, then simmer until all the fruit has broken down; pass through a sieve pressing down on the pulp to get all the mixture through. Leave to cool.

Please mention the FIVEWAYS DIRECTORY when responding to adverts

Melt the chocolate in a bowl placed over a saucepan of simmering water. Set aside to cool a bit. Beat together the soft cheese and sugar until smooth and stir in the melted chocolate. In another bowl lightly whip the cream to soft peaks; it is important not to over-mix it. Gently fold the cream into the chocolate mix and then mix in the cooled strawberry puree.

Spoon the cheesecake mixture over the biscuit base, smoothing the top with the back of a spoon, and pop into the fridge for at least 3 hours to set or preferably overnight. You can freeze the cheesecake at this point.

Release the cheesecake from the tin and peel off the baking paper, placing on a serving dish.

Use the remaining strawberries to decorate the top, finishing with some grated white chocolate.

Coachwerks is coming alive! Here is your opportunity to discover more...

Open Day at Coachwerks Saturday 11th July, 2pm until 11pm Over the last eight years, Coachwerks has been through more reincarnations than a Buddhist caterpillar, at times a slow moving creature with no sense of direction, at others, blossoming unexpectedly into something dazzling and spectacular. But for the past year we have been weaving a cocoon with a renewed sense of purpose, and finally we know what new life is about to emerge. With a full house of potters, stone-carvers, musicians and painters, the place is buzzing with creative energy. But Coachwerks is becoming much more than a workshop. With an on-site micro-brewery, the beginnings of a café and shop, and a collection of specialised bike tools, a vibrant community-focused space is ready to be born. From folk gigs to bike repairs, films nights to workshops, from swap shops to public meetings, poetry nights to private parties, Coachwerks is pulling together the talents and passions of all its inhabitants, and opening its doors to the local community. We want to see the space used by Hollingdean residents for as many purposes as possible, to create a community hub that serves the needs of local folk, providing an accessible, friendly place where everyone feels not only welcomed, but also a part of this new venture.

The Horrors of the Victorian Kitchen

This entertaining new event is a lively illustrated talk on the subject of food in Victorian Britain.

During the 19th century much of the food consumed by working-class families was adulterated with unpalatable and sometimes deadly substances. The Victorians had a mania for colour and so expected their pickles to be a livid green, anchovies bright red and their bread bleached white. Children’s sweets came dyed in crazy colours, unfortunately by using poisonous red lead and copper. The talk examines the hand-to-mouth diet of the poor who survived on foods unfit for human consumption. It also considers the pioneering work of those who sought to end the scandal of adulterated food by law. The event takes place in one of Preston Manor’s atmospheric period kitchens and includes advice on how to eradicate vermin, Victorian-style. Dates of the next events: Saturday 18th July 11.00am12.30pm and Friday 7th August 2.00-3.30pm. (The event is a sit-down talk of 90 minutes duration with adult-orientated content so not suitable for young children.)

Another successful street party in Hythe Road...

Hythe Street Party

Hythe Road residents held their third Big Lunch Street Party on 7th June, joining in with The Big Lunch (www.thebiglunch.com) led by the Eden Project and made possible by the Big Lottery Fund. The Big Lunch aims to strengthen communities by encouraging neighbours to sit down and have lunch together annually on the first Sunday in June. The residents of Hythe Road rose to the challenge and shared a marvellous meal and enjoyed the glorious sunshine, with kids and adults alike playing in the road and enjoying each other’s company. Comments made about the event included: “Thanks to everyone who organised the street party. It was our third, and I hope not our last. Fab. You Hythe Road lot are sorts of the best kind.” “I want to thank you so much for the brilliant organisation that enabled yesterday’s street party to be such a great success. As this is the first one we have attended since moving into this road, we shall be looking forward to the next one.” “We really enjoyed seeing the street being used as a place to meet and socialise, skate, ride, run and play - it really brings home how restrictive the car is, particularly on children’s lives.” So a great day was had by all! This event was generously supported by many of the local Fiveways businesses, so thanks go to:

Some advice on getting fit and being healthy from local resident Marianne Clark…

So you want to shed a few pounds? Most of us are familiar with the rudiments of weight loss. If you consume fewer calories than you use up, you’ll lose weight. It’s pretty simple, isn’t it? It’s just about exercise and food choices. In spite of the undeniable truth of this simple formula, there are few amongst us who wouldn’t be interested in any new weight-loss method which guarantees to melt the pounds with minimal physical effort, selfdiscipline or deprivation! A quick trawl on the internet will offer up a bucket-load of teas, tonics, potions and pills, guaranteeing weight-loss miracles of gargantuan proportions. Just send off a wad of hard-earned cash and sit back and wait for a parcel of dubious content to arrive from some far-flung corner of the world. Far enough away to ensure that there’s little you can do, if anything, when the promised miracle doesn’t materialise! So, other than the “exercise + calories in versus calories out” approach to weight management, are there any scientifically-proven ways to help you on your way to a sleeker you? A recent edition of “Runners’ World” included some interesting claims from recent studies: Your hunger is regulated by hormones when you sleep, so sleep deprivation has a direct effect on what you eat.

Now there’s an excuse for a lie-in! You’ll eat almost one fifth less if you eat in subdued lighting whilst listening to chilled music. Really?! You are likely to consume significantly more if there is no colour contrast between your plate and your food. So, NEVER eat vanilla ice-cream from a white bowl! Capsaicin, the active element of chilli peppers, can stimulate energy burning in fat cells and help prevent weight gain. Great, if you can cope with the sideeffects of regular consumption. An acid found in raspberries and strawberries can slow the growth of fat cells and the formation of new ones as well as boosting the metabolism. I’ll take that one! Make of this what you will. If I catch anyone breakfasting at 11am on raspberries in a green chilli sauce on colour-contrasted plates with the dimmer switch turned down and Van Morrison on the turntable, I’ll know what you’re up to! There’s really no substitute for the tried and tested. Move more and eat better! Marianne Clark is the founder of FITSO FITNESS, a personal trainer, GB age group triathlete, and running & endurance sports coach. mcla@sky.com or contact@fitsofitness.co.uk 07775 780844. fitsofitness.co.uk
