Another four years passes and once more the World Cup is here. For once the expectation levels amongst the majority could be termed as ‘realistic’ with the gradual realization since the last World Cup that we are no longer a major force in world football. That said, however, and what keeps us all gripped and fascinated by sport is that it can throw up amazing stories and unexpected heroes. Fingers crossed!! I hope you readers of this fine publication will be satisfied with the offerings we bring you this month. We have three articles about up and coming local events with the annual highlight of the Blakers Park Community Picnic headlining on page 7. We also have two food reviews - one of the recently refurbished Preston Park Tavern that has opened under new management and the other of Coggings & Co, which is the latest venture of Andrew Coggings who used to own Preston Park Tavern. Have a great June! The Fiveways Directory Team

Brighton Orpheus Choir It’s a fact singing is good for you! Researchers from Gothenburg University, Sweden, have found that the heartbeats of choristers synchronise when they are singing, which is calming and as beneficial as yoga. Singing has also been shown to boost the immune system and reduce stress.
I’ve been singing with the Brighton Orpheus Choir for four years. We rehearse every Wednesday in term time, at Varndean School, Balfour Road, between 7.30 and 9.30pm. There are times on a wet and windy winter’s night when I’ve been tempted to miss a rehearsal and slump on the sofa watching TV, but I’m always very glad

I made the effort. You feel so uplifted and invigorated after a good sing. The choir, founded in 1948, has about 90 members and our ages span the generations. We recently performed Verdi’s Requiem at All Saints Church, Hove. We were accompanied by a large orchestra (Musicians of All Saints, Lewes) and four superb soloists. We had a standing ovation from the audience and feel it was the best concert we’ve done for a few years. We perform two major works a year, and in the summer we perform a lighter programme and the whole concert has a more laidback feel. We will be at Varndean School and at Priory School, Lewes, for our summer concert of ’Choral Classics’. All the details of our events can be found on our website. We also run workshops which are open to everybody and this year we are tackling Haydn’s Nelson Mass - this will be at Knoyle Hall, Knoyle Road. We also go to Brighton Station for carol singing in December. Last Christmas we were raising money for Shelter - it’s a lovely thing to do, especially when you see the weary face of a commuter light up when they hear us singing! We always welcome new members. You just need to feel comfortable reading music and, once you’ve had a meeting with our musical director, Stella Hull, for an informal audition, you’ll get lots of support from everybody, and if your sight reading is a little rusty - as mine was when I joined - you will soon improve with practice. So what are you waiting for? Come and discover The Brighton Orpheus Choir either as a member or in the audience. www.brightonorpheus.org Facebook and Twitter Written by Hilary Brown (Alto)

Blakers Park News
Picnic Returns for its 21st Birthday Blakers Park Community Picnic and Summer Fair kicks off at 11.30am on Saturday 14th June. The ever-popular Varndean School Samba Band will herald the start of the event and the bouncy castle is being super-pumped for extra springiness.
Children's games, food stalls, bric-a-brac and all kinds of crafty things will be on sale at the dozens of stalls. If you haven't been able to make a priority stall reservation in advance, there may be some space available on the day. A team of volunteers is already in place to make sure the event runs smoothly, but just a few more will make things easier for everyone and make sure that everyone, children in particular, has a lovely time. • You can volunteer for as little as an hour and it's not hard work. • It can be before, during or after the picnic - or for all three periods. • Young people wanting community work for their Duke of Edinburgh awards will be most welcome as volunteers. •
In particular, we need an adult with a vehicle to collect and return the Red Cross gazebo, which is being lent to us by the generous Friends of William Clark
0
Park (aka the Patch). The Red Cross can't function without it and without the Red Cross the picnic can't go ahead. • In a break with tradition, we are giving local musicians a chance to play "unplugged", ie without amplification. If you'd like to play an acoustic set, please do email friends@blakerspark.org.uk. • Finally, we need to borrow one more gazebo, to be the HQ of the Friends of Blakers Park on the day. Do you have one you could lend us for that one day? So, please join the long list of lovely local people who have helped us over 21 years of Blakers Park Community Picnics and Summer Fairs by emailing friends@blakerspark.org.uk.

RECIPE
11 We are delighted to introduce our new regular recipe sent to us by Sarah Stubbs...
Strawberry almond crumble cake Delicious English strawberries are coming into season and this moist almond sponge, topped with fresh strawberries and almond crumble, is the perfect summer cake to serve in the garden for afternoon tea!
For the crumble topping: 75g self-raising flour 25g ground almonds 25g caster sugar 60g butter - room temperature
For the sponge: 200g baking margarine 200g caster sugar 140g self-raising flour 75g ground almonds 3 medium eggs 1 teaspoon almond extract 350g fresh strawberries
To finish: 5g caster sugar 25g flaked almonds A few extra strawberries to decorate.
Method: • Heat the oven to 160C/140C fan oven/gas mark 3.
• Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and level the top. • Slice the strawberries and arrange two-thirds of them over the top of the sponge, scatter the crumble mix evenly over the strawberries, dot the remaining strawberries over the top and sprinkle with the sugar and flaked almonds. • Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 50 minutes – 1 hour, or until a skewer inserted comes out clean. If the top of the cake is browned and the inside is still uncooked, cover with foil until the cake is cooked through.
• Grease and line the base and sides of a deep, 23cm round, loose-bottomed tin with baking paper.
This cake is delicious served warm with cream as a dessert, or cooled and popped into a tin ready to take on summer picnics!
• To make the crumble topping, place the flour, sugar and ground almonds into a bowl, add the butter and rub in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Set aside.
Sarah Stubbs is a local Kitchen Coach, passionate about teaching traditional home cooking and baking through her locally held cooking lessons, workshops and baking group. For more information:
• To make the sponge, whisk the margarine and caster sugar in a large bowl until pale and creamy, add the eggs, flour, almond extract and ground almonds, and beat together until smooth.

BOOK REVIEW
15 15 15
Our monthly book review written by Fiveways resident and BBC book reviewer Gary Mepsted.
N.F. Simpson: The Collected Plays. Faber, paperback. £22.50
A crucial part of my remit as a reviewer is to feature books with a broad appeal. Equally important, though, is to bring to your attention books and authors who may be unfamiliar. This frequently causes a conflict and, when such a conflict arises, I’ll always take the side of the book. This month is one such occasion, and I take enormous pleasure in reviewing the collected plays of N.F. Simpson. N.F. who? is, I suspect, your response. So, a very brief history: Norman Frederick Simpson (1991 - 2011) was an English playwright whose plays were perfect examples of the Theatre of the Absurd with echoes of Lewis Carroll, James Thurber and P.G. Wodehouse. He’s also been compared, though not by himself it must be said, to Ionesco. His first, and possibly best known, play, A Resounding Tinkle, premiered at the Royal Court in December 1957. His masterpiece, I would argue, is One Way Pendulum (1959). Largely eschewing plot, and bursting with brilliant oneliners and head-spinning non sequiturs, Simpson’s plays beautifully fuse the quotidian and the bizarre. Fans of The Goon Show and/or Monty Python are likely to find much to enjoy in Simpson’s queasy, irrational dramatic landscape. I’m happy to recommend this collection for its glorious readability. Play texts are usually only read by students or those who work in the theatre - actors, directors and the like - but Simpson’s work should appeal to anyone with an eye for unusual comedy, and tragedy dressed up in its finest surrealist garb. The play format should not hinder your reading enjoyment, such is the tightness, exuberance and sheer addictiveness of Simpson’s writing.
worked in all mediums: theatre, radio and film and television, and this fat volume is the ideal introduction to a British playwright who, whilst never breaking into the mainstream, carved his own particular and peculiar niche within English drama. N.F. Simpson is a writer who deserves to be much better known than he is. The book may not be cheap, but you’ll get an awful lot of laughs for your money and have plenty to think about too. Go on, take the plunge!
Faber are to be heartily congratulated for putting out this superb collection of Simpson’s plays. Simpson

QUIZ QUESTION FIVE : Which seven English players have missed penalties after extra time in Football World Cup matches?
GARDENS
17 17
Brought to you each month by gardening expert Lisa Attwell...
Fiveways Gardens... June 2014 Unexpected gaps often appear at this time of year. Plants, as living things, have a limited life span and don’t live forever. Every year we need to top up our plants and that can either mean an opportunity to try something new, or replace a lost favourite. It’s not always a good idea to replace like for like. If you’ve lost a shrub or tree, look it up on a site like the Royal Horticultural Society http://www.rhs.org.uk/ and you’ll find advice about replanting the same plant in the same place. It’s also worth thinking about thinning out some of the more vigorous border plants that can take over if left unchecked. Garden centres and nurseries are full of beautiful summer-flowering bedding now, and these plants can really make the borders sing, and often will last well into late summer or even autumn. Don’t forget to grab some annual climbers too, to fill gaps on fences and trellis. Climbers are tough for garden centres to keep looking good, so tend to sell through fast, so get in quick. Most summer bedding and climbers prefer a warm sunny spot, but there are a few annuals that don’t mind some shade. Ask in the nursery, but Begonias – there are some lovely new varieties - Ageratum, Nicotiana and even some Lobelias often do well in the shade. Prune Forsythia and Ribes, flowering currant, if you haven’t already. Both can be cut back hard, if they are beginning to outgrow the space available. It’s been an early season this year, because there was hardly a winter, so it may be that by the time you’re reading this some other early flowering shrubs have done their thing, and will benefit from pruning too. As things heat up over the summer, it’s worth remembering to keep watering new shrubs and trees – hot windy days take loads of water out of plants. For small to medium trees, give between 2-4 watering cans of water twice a week in dry spells – this encourages roots to reach down and out in search of water, and thus become stronger plants, less susceptible to drying out. Also, water away from the stem or trunk to encourage roots out-

wards. Even when it rains, bear in mind that your trees and shrubs act as umbrellas and water often barely penetrates the surface. A few pounds spent on landscape fabric and a few inches of mulch, either decorative such as cobbles or well rotted compost or manure, will help too. Mulch containers with horticultural grit or other decorative stone – it really will cut down the watering and keep your pot plants in better shape. Consider installing or getting someone else to install an irrigation system. If done properly they are a very efficient way of using water, even more important now that most of us are on water meters. Best wishes Lisa

All change for long term member of Fiveways Artists Group...
ARTmosphere The front door opens, a wave of pre-festival excitement flooding out. I step into the crowded hallway where wine and canapés are promptly offered - this is my kind of exhibition! Weaving through the throng, I greet familiar faces and join their enthusiasm for the occasion. It’s truly a privilege to be here, because this isn’t just a Private View; this is the end of a very special era for Fiveways artist John Whiting and his family. John is a long-standing member of the Fiveways Artists Group, and for 16 years the Whitings have welcomed the public into their home for Open House season. That is all set to change once the doors of 35 North open later this summer; the gallery will become the new home of John’s art, along with work from local and international exhibitors. Kick-starting the new venture whilst preparing for this year’s festival has, understandably, left John (architect) and his wife Sharon (PR guru) a little exhausted, but their spirits are high and their pride is obvious; with good reason, because the exhibition is fantastic. John’s trademark nude studies and soft depictions of the city he loves are interspersed with scenes of Venice and New York, so subtly and beautifully captured that I find myself wanting to buy not only the paintings, but airfares to said destinations. on others too.) Instead, I journey to the next room, which focuses on three-dimensional form: Johanna Häiväoja exhibits textured bronze sculptures and mixed media pieces; François Blosseville’s own abstract sculptures sit alongside charcoal drawings; above the fireplace a multi-layered, intricate paper collage by Will Turner catches my eye. The house is busier than ever now, but I sneak a moment to chat with my hosts. “It feels very strange to be closing the door on this particular chapter of our lives,” says Whiting. “Many of those who have exhibited with us over the years have become close friends. 35 North will obviously be a very different experience; however we hope to retain some of the spirit of the open house in the way that we work. It feels very exciting and we can’t wait.” Follow the progress of 35 North at 35northblog.wordpress. com and join me at the inaugural exhibition, coming soon. FOOD REVIEW

Andrew coggings, former owner of Preston Park Tavern has a new venture. Read more...
New Burger on the Block It’s an exciting prospect for any foodie when a new independent restaurant opens; so how about one that uses locally-sourced ingredients, boasts eco-friendly furnishings, displays the work of local artists and just happens to serve up astonishingly mouthwatering burgers? Introducing Coggings & Co - Seven Dials’ new burger restaurant and gastronomic talk of the town.
It seems Brighton is experiencing a burger revolution; soggy buns and meat of dubious origin are no longer deemed acceptable. Today, the hungry customer seeks high quality and creativity; an expectation Coggings & Co more than satisfies.
owner and 2013 Sustainable Restaurant Awards winner. Andrew’s ethical approach has lost none of the key attributes that previously made him successful; sustainability and service remain high priorities, and he demands nothing short of perfection where quality is concerned.
It’s with keen anticipation that I enter the new premises of Andrew Coggings, former Fiveways business
The inventive menu is built around the very best Sussex produce: beef from Redlands Farm, brioche buns from the Real Patisserie. Whilst this menu is compact, it takes us some time to digest the options; local photographer (and my gastro partner-in-crime) Pam Dolton tackles the meat while I peruse the specials board. We’re so excited we can barely control ourselves. The mention of chilli jam wins me over and I opt for the spiced cauliflower and sweetcorn fritter, whilst my beef-loving colleague chooses the brisket with a chipotle chilli kick.
Coggings & Co is all about great burgers, made with local ingredients sourced with care, prepared with skill and served with warmth. Monday – Saturday 12noon to 11pm. Sunday 12noon to 7pm. 01273 220220 87-93 Dyke Rd, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 3JE www.coggingsandco.com

There isn’t much conversation once the food arrives; stacked high, and presented simply but attractively on wooden boards, these are the Mount Everest of burgers. It’s fair to say we’re both equally overcome by the aromas, textures and flavours of our respective dishes. This is undeniably good food. Garnished with fresh leaves, extraordinarily good chips and homemade aioli, it’s also incredibly filling food, but it’s inconceivable not to at least attempt a dessert. Opposite me, Pam looks as though she might burst with delight when a plate of mini doughnuts arrives, filled with black cherry coulis and accompanied by a pot of Cocoa Loco Fairtrade organic chocolate dipping sauce. Heaven on a plate, basically. Uncomfortably full but ridiculously happy, we’re unable to move for some time; Andrew’s experienced and loyal staff don’t rush us. We spend some time admiring the quirky artwork and relaxed aesthetics of the space, before eventually waddling home. Our verdict: Coggings & Co is a triumph and a must-try. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.

SONG OF THE MONTH
27 Keith of local lo-fi rockers Les Cactus & the Rumpy Pumpkins offers his monthly musical recommendations...
Les Cactus Recommends...
Temporary Secretary by Paul McCartney, 1980 It’s always nice to hear something unexpectedly cock-eyed from some of the old monuments of pop. The other week I heard a great radio show which special guest-starred the front man from Californian psych-rock garage superheroes Thee Oh Sees, who played an hour’s worth of his favourite musical belters. They were all corkers, but probably most surprising (and perhaps for some most alarming) of the selections was this Paul McCartney song from his commercial flop, synthesized second solo LP. I didn’t even know such a thing existed, although this is perhaps not a great surprise - the only Paul McCartney solo records I know fairly well are the two singles I inherited from the family collection when everyone else got rid of their record players: ‘Wonderful Christmas Time’ - which I like - and ‘We All Stand Together’ with Rupert the Bear and the Frog Chorus – which I don’t. I know people who think ‘Wonderful Christmas Time’ is utterly dreadful and put it on a par with the festive-themed output of Cliff Richard. (I haven’t asked their opinion on the frog chorus.) Apparently, ‘Temporary Secretary’ was recorded at the same time as ‘Wonderful Christmas Time’, which would explain their mutual electronic-heavy arrangements although, in comparison, the Christmas tune is a much more restrained effort than ‘Temporary Secretary’, which reaches much more ludicrous stratospheric heights of synth-o-matic bombast, which I imagine could have gone down a storm on any disco dance floor of the era if the record hadn’t totally stiffed.
Listen to the song and make comments (if I can work out the settings) online at lescactusmusic.blogspot.co.uk More about Les Cactus & the Rumpy Pumpkins at lescactusmusic.bandcamp.com
Rest assured, folks, it holds its own against any of Cliff Richard’s Christmas songs. But that’s enough about Christmas – the buttercups are out.

My First Word My First Word grows up is a friendly and happy pre-school environment that combines an underlying Montessori ethos with the Early Year Foundation stage curriculum based on learning through play. clude minimum level 3 childcare, plus Montessori level 4. Along with all the staff, the Montessori practitioner respects the unique individuality of each child and believes that children should be free to succeed and learn without criticism or restriction.
Inside you’ll find children engaged in various different, selfchosen activities. A quiet, cosy space is available for children to rest in. Child-sized basins and toilets allow the children to practise being independent.
We are one of the first pre-schools in the Fiveways area to offer flexibility to busy parents, without using “sessions”. Parents can pick and choose their own “core” hours to suit their families’ needs, being able to add extra hours as and when required.
Children have opportunities to develop life skills, such as caring for the garden - sweeping and watering; caring for each other - practising sharing and turn-taking; helping with daily duties - preparing snacks for others or serving water in child-sized glasses. During outdoor playtime the children are able to explore the wooded area, hunting for mini-beasts and noticing the effects of the changing seasons. A wooden playhouse supports children’s role-playing, often thinking of ideas to turn it into a toy shop or doctor’s surgery. The decked area helps children to practise safe scooting, where they can learn to judge space and negotiate with others. Our friendly and experienced staff provide a professional and warm welcome to both families and children. Qualifications in-

It has been all change at Preston Park Tavern recently. Read on to find out more...
Preston Park Tavern...Local Pub Havelock’s new attraction: a local pub, run by a local guy. We sent Rosie Greenaway to meet manager Ben Murray, and check out Fiveways’ new watering hole.
Before re-opening in March, the Preston Park Tavern underwent substantial renovation, including a garden makeover, alterations to the bar and cellar, and a serious kitchen re-fit. Careful consideration went into the refurbishment, to achieve the “welcoming, friendly, vibrant pub,” which new manager and local guy Ben believed was needed. Talking to him, it was easy to see where the pub inherits its relaxed atmosphere from. “I felt there was so much potential to create something really special for Fiveways,” Ben told me. In its new incar-

nation, the space caters for families whilst still providing somewhere for adults to work or relax, day and night. Ben explained it’s a pub for locals which supports locals. From beer to bread, the emphasis is on locally-sourced produce, including Barfields’ meat. 24 year-old Head Chef Simon joined us for a chat; half Italian and classically trained, he’s been in the profession for over a decade, and became Brighton’s youngest HC aged 21. His passion for food shone as he spoke of “cooking with love and care” and creating daily menus according to fresh, seasonal ingredients. Simon will offer weekend BBQs throughout summer and a spit roast for Pride, accompanying Ben’s plans for cocktails and face-painting in the garden. They share great optimism for what’s ahead, and as a local resident it was encouraging to see such positivity for our community. Apparently I’m not their only fan - “The response has been better than we ever could’ve expected,” Ben confirmed. I returned the following night at 7pm with photographer Pam Dolton, and already it was buzzing. Every inch of sunsoaked outdoor space was taken by post-work drinkers and early-dining families. With an extensive selection of local wines and ales (including the popular Dark Star) plus international craft beers, we were spoiled for choice; Prosecco by the glass seemed like a good start. The staff - chosen for their local roots - were bubbly and welcoming, adding to the laid-back vibe. The informal dining experience, without table service, detracted nothing from the striking food; Simon’s innovative menu speaks for itself. Our highlights were smoked mackerel pâté and melt-in-your-mouth pork fillet with caramelised apple mash. Sitting back to digest in the pub’s easy-going environment, it was clear why the PPT has received overwhelmingly positive feedback, and why it’s expected to be a busy and prosperous summer.
