Welcome to our June edition!!
So Summer is here and let’s hope it is one to remember due to the its length and high temperatures rather than the amount of millimetres of rain that fell! The subject of Summer and hoping for good weather brings us nicely to the calendar of Summer events that always start in June in Blakers Park and not too far away in Preston Park. We have these covered in this months Directory.
The Blakers Park Community Picnic is always a great occasion for relaxing in the Park and chatting with neighbours and friends. Read more on Page 5. Also there is a Summer Fair at the Fiveways Playcentre in Florence Road and details of that are on page 21. Finally in Preston Park there is the annual Take Part event that is always a good day out with lots of activities to try. See page 31 for details of that. There is plenty more so have a good read and a great June!! The Fiveways Directory Team 01273 551021 info@fivewaysdirectory.co.uk www.fivewaysdirectory.co.uk Cover image: Peter Spells

Rural Preston in 1873 Looking across the railway line and sheds to the cornfields stretching up the Ditchling Road. The photographer was probably standing on ground at the rear of Hamilton Road and facing slightly north-east. Between the railway and the cornfields can be just seen Preston Road running between low white walls. On these same fields were later built Springfield, Florence and Rugby Roads. On the horizon can be seen the Jolly Brewer and the line of Ditchling Road can be clearly traced. At this period Preston Park was still private land owned by the Stanford family of Preston Manor. The long line of trees running obliquely from Preston Road are those now marking the eastern boundary of the park, facing Preston Park Avenue. Note the farm buildings somewhere near the present junction of Stanford Avenue and Southdown Avenue.

Fiveways resident and operator of Riverford, Stephen Spears proves his commitment to healthy eating for children...
Riverford Sponsor the Children’s Parade This year Riverford Brighton sponsored the Brighton Festival Children’s Parade and what an amazing day we all had. Having worked frantically for the weeks leading up to the big day I had not really imagined what it would be like leading such an amazing party through the streets of Brighton. I was humbled by the boundless talent, creativity and imaginations shown by the children, their teachers and assistants in the costumes and models they had made. We spoke to hundreds of people about Riverford and our ethical approach to chemical free organic foods. They could see our fresh veg and fruit boxes, try our tasty apples and discuss how a veg box would work for them. We are a local business, with all our drivers and admin staff living locally, which means we can provide exceptional service with a personal touch. I have always wanted to promote healthy cooking, recipe ideas for our wide and sometimes unusual range of veg, while promoting food events and local places to my customers. The easiest way to follow us locally is to Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ RiverfordBrighton.
Helping fund an opening highlight of Brighton’s Festival calendar has been great fun and hugely rewarding. Stephen Spears Riverford

GARDENS

Brought to you each month by Fiveways gardening expert Lisa Attwell...
Fiveways Gardens... June 2015 Unexpected gaps often appear at this time of year. Plants, as living things, have a limited life span and don’t live forever. Every year we need to top up our plants and that can either mean an opportunity to try something new, or replace a lost favourite. It’s not always a good idea to replace like for like. If you’ve lost a shrub or tree, look it up on a site like the RHS http://www.rhs.org.uk/ and you’ll find advice about replanting the same plant in the same place. It’s also worth thinking about thinning out some of the more vigorous border plants that can take over if left unchecked. Garden centres and nurseries are full of beautiful summer-flowering bedding now, and these plants can really make the borders sing, and often will last well into late summer or even autumn. Don’t forget to grab some annual climbers too, to fill gaps on fences and trellis. Climbers are tough for garden centres to keep looking good, so tend to sell through fast, so get in quick. Most summer bedding and climbers prefer a warm sunny spot, but there are a few annuals that don’t mind some shade. Ask in the nursery, but Begonias – there are some lovely new varieties - Ageratum, Nicotiana and even some lobelias often do well in the shade. Prune Forsythia and Ribes, flowering currant, if you haven’t already. Both can be cut back hard, if they are beginning to outgrow the space available. It’s been an early season this year, because there was hardly a winter, so it may be that by the time you’re reading this some other early flowering shrubs have done their thing, and will benefit from pruning too. As things heat up over the summer, it’s worth remembering to keep watering new shrubs and trees – hot windy days take loads of water out of plants. For small to medium trees give 2-3 watering cans of water twice a week in dry spells – this encourages roots to reach down and out in search of water, and thus become stronger plants, less susceptible to drying out. Also, water away

from the stem or trunk to encourage roots outwards. Even when it rains, bear in mind that your trees and shrubs act as umbrellas and water often barely penetrates the surface. A few pounds spent on landscape fabric and a few inches of mulch, either decorative such as cobbles or well rotted compost or manure, will help too. Mulch containers with horticultural grit or other decorative stone – it really will cut down the watering and keep your pot plants in better shape. Consider installing or getting someone else to install an irrigation system. If done properly they are a very efficient way of using water, even more important now that most of us are on water meters. Best wishes Lisa

BOOK REVIEW
17 BBC book reviewer and local resident,Gary Mepsted talks about choosing what to read…
Book lovers, be bold, be brave... Back in November last year the TV programme This Morning launched their ‘Be a Best Seller’ competition designed to discover, well, a best-selling author. Amongst the judges was the literary agent, Jonny Geller, who explained that they were looking for new fresh stuff, but not anything that was necessarily wholly original. He went on to state that original work is hard to sell. It appears that readers (most readers - all readers?) prefer novels which are somehow familiar, which remind them of other books they’ve read and enjoyed, and publishers, along with the likes of Amazon, actively encourage this safe, proscriptive approach to book buying. I find the current state of affairs, when it comes to marketing novels, both shocking and deeply depressing. It promotes a mindset that dissuades readers from exploring the literary landscape, from taking a chance on a book, from trusting their own judgement. This reductive tagging of a book with the label ‘if you liked X, Y and Z you’ll love this novel’ is, I believe, detrimental to the healthy and active promotion of original writing - and since when did the word ‘original’ become an epithet?
choices with regard to your reading material, where novels didn’t quite so brazenly proclaim their similarities to other novels. Yes, it’s the publisher’s job to shift as many units as possible to maximise revenue for both themselves and their authors, and in doing so they have sought to tap into the inherent conservatism of readers who know what they like and intend to stick to it. So, I urge you book lovers, be bold, be brave, release yourself from the shackles imposed by the ‘if you like this…’ pundits and (re)discover true freedom of choice when it comes to those novels you choose to read. I leave you with this thought: if you like broccoli, you might also like kale, cauliflower and sprouts. Gary Mepsted
I simply can’t imagine any novelist worth their salt sitting down at their desk and declaring that they want to write a novel just like Gone Girl. Surely writers are driven to examine, and articulate, their own unique vision of the world, rather than perform an act of literary mimicry, however impressive. I may be accused of displaying an astonishing naivety here, but isn’t that striving for originality what propels the novel’s development, governs its ability to refresh and reinvent itself? This, I would argue, is true for all forms of fiction. I used to tell my young daughter that it’s the people who are different who make a difference. This statement is also applicable to writing. Call me old fashioned, but I yearn for the days when it was possible to be wholly responsible for your own

A must visit venue for your New Tiles and Bathroom If you’re revamping your bathroom or need tiles for your kitchen or conservatory floor, look no further: Eurotiles & Bathrooms is the one place that you ought to visit. There is a huge selection of tiles ranging in style from large size porcelain ones which are perfect for a modern bathroom or for kitchen, lounge and even patio floors, through mosaics to more traditional 10 x 10cm for kitchens and marble and stone effects for bathrooms. Wood effect tiles are very popular at the moment as the latest technology means that they are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing and they can be used in areas that are prone to damp where real wood would not be suitable, and the showroom has lots of choice of different styles and colours of wood. It is the exclusive stockist of Ca’ Pietra in Sussex giving you access to some fabulous natural stone tiles. There is also a full range of bathroom products on display including furniture, sanitary ware, showers, taps and accessories such as mirrors and heated towel rails. Ege sanitary ware, which comes with a 10-year warranty, is exclusive to Eurotiles & Bathrooms in the UK and they have other stylish brands such as Burlington and Pura Bathrooms.
Most of the range is in stock so you don’t need to plan weeks in advance, you can just come in, choose your products and take them away, or arrange for free local delivery. The Brighton showroom is based on the Freshfields Business Park, near to Screwfix and Benchmarx Kitchens. They offer free parking so you can pull up outside, and knowledgeable, friendly staff to help you decide on the best products for your project. www.eurotilesandbathrooms.com Email: brighton@eurotilesandbathrooms.com; Phone: 01273 605445

Brighton author and chef Rob Silverstone lives in D’Aubigny Road not too far away from Fiveways. He has written three books on food in Sussex and Normandy and has run his own restaurants in Brighton and Rouen...
Local Person: Rob Silverstone How long have you lived in Brighton? 26 years. What do you most like about the area? The view from the top of Prince’s Road, the tightly packed streets clambering above the railway tracks; turn around and The Downs, dusted with snow or scorched in the summer heat. Bluebell time in the garden. The aroma of the Raven Bakery. Cycling down the Ditchling Road towards that wall of sea. London Road station as first stop to Dieppe. Is there anything you would like to change? Cast the planners of the Vogue Gyratory into the outer darkness, proclaimed by heralds on horseback on the lawns of Preston Manor. Return the Duke of York’s to the enchanting films that held sway be-fore it went mainstream. What is your favourite Brighton dish?
Fiveways Playcentre Summer Fayre Fiveways Playcentre are holding their Summer Fayre on 20th June, from 11am to 2pm.
Scallops with smoked ham hock. Spinach roulade with samphire and sweet red pepper sauce. Any-thing that makes good use of our excellent local produce. I love reading about those early Sussex puddings, like ‘Pond Pudding’ which is stuffed with whole lemons, but all that sugar and suet is not my cup of tea. Do you have any plans to open another restaurant in Brighton? Have reached an age where writing and photography are more rational pursuits than twelve-hour shifts in a throbbing kitchen. Still harbour the ambition to have a healthy cake shop. Where can we find your books? Quaff, Waterstones, Amazon and Transmanche Ferries.
At the fayre there will be a bouncy castle, Cameron the Caterpillar, lots of craft activities for the children and face painting, along with ice cream, homemade cakes, BBQ and Fiveways’ famous chips!! There will also be a licensed bar, plus lots of other stalls selling toys, books and other goodies. All in all, lots of fun. 8-10 Florence Road, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 6DJ Phone: 01273 500257

PET ADVICE
25
Advice for you and your pet from local pet shop, The Pet Shed...
Keeping your pet’s teeth tip top Smelly breath is one of the most common complaints pet owners have and the most common cause of smelly breath is dental disease. With the average cost of a dental operation being over £300, it makes sense to try and keep on top of our pets’ dental health at home. Brush your pet’s teeth All pets should be trained early on to accept tooth brushing as part of their routine. The “brushes” that you wear on your fingertips don’t work as well as brushes with softer bristles – and they make it much easier for your pet to bite down on your finger. Look for very softbristled brushes with long handles. Use a toothpaste designed for pets which is free of fluoride and look for products that contain antibacterial enzymes, which help discourage bacterial growth. Dental diets There is an assumption that dry food naturally cleans our pets’ teeth, but unfortunately this isn’t really the case. Kibble can remove the plaque near the top of a pet’s teeth but your average dry food does not remove the plaque near the gum line where it does the most damage. There are a number of specific dental diets on the market. The texture and shape cleans the teeth during chewing and they help reduce dental plaque.
The Pet Shed is Brighton’s friendliest independent pet food and accessories shop As well as stocking familiar brands we are also keen to promote and support local suppliers and products that are ethical, organic and kinder to the environment

Treats and chews Dental chews are not all created equal, and natural alternatives to the packaged ones work very well for dogs. Raw bones have a mildly abrasive texture and during mastication endorphins are produced in the brains which provide a sense of calm that relaxes your dog. Avoid using cooked bones (apart from those sold as dog chews by your reputable pet shop) as these can splinter. Uncooked meat can also carry bacteria, so use common sense when handling. Antlers are also a good natural chew. Harvested after they are shed from the deer, these make a great humane and sustainable alternative to a raw bone. They are long lasting, and odour free. Water and food additives Mouth washes can be added to your pet’s drinking water, and food additives, coming in a granulated seaweed form, can easily be added to food every day and are widely available. Hopefully, by adopting these tips at home, trips to the vet’s and costly bills can be avoided, but if you are unsure of the best way to use the preventative methods please make an appointment to see your vet or veterinary nurse. RECIPE
27 The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah Stubbs
Cheese, onion and tomato swirly rolls Delicious fresh rolls swirled with tasty mature cheddar cheese, spring onions and tomato.
Ingredients: 500g strong white flour 1 teaspoon salt 7g sachet of easy-blend yeast 1 tablespoon olive oil 300ml warm water For the filling and topping: 3 tablespoons tomato purée 4 spring onions finely chopped 150g grated mature cheddar cheese 1 tablespoon olive oil 50g sesame seeds With the sun out and summer here (well, it was lovely when I was writing this recipe!) these wonderful fresh rolls are perfect to serve with salads, barbecues or at a picnic. You can make these the day before you need them and once cooled they can be kept in an airtight bag or container. They also freeze really well so you can always have a batch ready in the freezer for last minute summer plans. Method: • In a large bowl mix the flour, salt, yeast, 1 tablespoon olive oil and the warm water and mix to a soft dough; if too stiff add a tiny bit more warm water. Knead by hand for 10 minutes or in a mixer with a dough hook for 5 minutes. Clean the bowl and lightly oil it, then put the kneaded dough back into the bowl and cover with oiled cling film. Leave to rise in a warm place for about an hour or until the dough has roughly doubled in size. • Grate the cheese for the filling and finely chop the spring onions.
Please mention the FIVEWAYS DIRECTORY when responding to adverts
• Turn the oven on to 200C /180C fan oven. Line two baking trays with non-stick baking paper. On a floured work surface roll out the dough to roughly 20cm x 30cm. Spread the tomato purée evenly over the dough and then sprinkle with the grated cheese and spring onions. Roll the dough up starting with the long edge and then slice into 15 slices. • Place the slices onto the lined trays and press the top down slightly then lightly brush with olive oil and sprinkle a few sesame seeds onto each swirl. • Loosely cover with cling film and leave to rise for another 20 minutes until they have puffed up. • Cook for 20-25 minutes until they are a pale golden brown. Sarah Stubbs is a local Kitchen Coach, passionate about teaching traditional baking through her locally held cooking lessons and baking demonstration evenings. She also bakes celebration cakes and caters for afternoon tea events. For more information: www.letscookathome.co.uk Facebook: Let’s Cook at Home 01273 646474 / 07905 701386

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue
You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.
The Reality
The Law (C.R.A.G - charging for residential accommodation guide) allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £800 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for.
The Solution
For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two Trusts within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, prevent your home from being taken into account by the local authority altogether should you ever require care in the future.
The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as Trust beneficiaries for that particular Trust will subsequently have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy the survivor is protected from having to sell the property to pay for their care should they need it because it is not possible to sell just their half of the property and the Crag guidelines clearly state that the market value of half a property is £0. The second half of the property will then ultimately go into Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. The beneficiaries will at that stage have both halves safe and secure in Trust and will be able to share and dispose of the property according to the wishes of the settlors (the original owners of both halves). By leaving 1/2 the property into Trust on first death, the surviving partner can still sell the property to downsize if they wish and are not restricted in any way with regards to what they wish to do to or with the property - it simply means that it is safeguarded and therefore will definitely be able to be appointed to the chosen beneficiaries when the time comes. For sole owners immediately conveying at least half of your property into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and becoming a Trustee and primary beneficiary of the Trust with others nominated to become beneficiaries after your death is usually enough to take away the risk of the property being considered as an asset to be sold if care is required as the property is not absolutely owned by yourself anymore and again it is not possible to sell half a house or force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about how this strategy could be of real benefit to you and your family.
For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey at least 1/2 of your property into it which will produce the same result.
The Reasoning
When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. When the first partner dies, they leave their half into their trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the primary beneficiary which means that they have complete control over the property and what happens to it.

Some advice on getting fit and being healthy from local resident Marianne Clark…
Spotlight on Regain... If you are a regular reader of this magazine, then you’ll realise that I have something of a passion for the benefits of sport! As I frequently say, it’s not just about fitness and health, but so much more: enjoyment, personal challenge, shared experience, teamwork, confidence, achievement, general physical and mental wellbeing. And those benefits can be enjoyed by anyone who takes part in sport, whatever your level of fitness or ability, or indeed, disability. So, this month I’d like to highlight the work of REGAIN, a charity that helps severe spinal injury patients become more independent and active and to participate in sports again. It’s a great charity that hugely enhances the lives of formerly active people who have become paralysed through sporting accident or injury. In recent years it has supported para-Olympians and given new focus and meaning to the lives of many men and women who have suffered catastrophic spinal injuries. Over the past year or so, I, and my fellow Brighton triathletes pictured below (from left to right: Mik Onions, Thomas Garner, me, Leanne Garner, Simon Taylor and Paul McCarthy) have qualified to race at the European Triathlon Championships, and in July this year we are due to head to Geneva to compete as members of the GB triathlon team. It’s a privilege to be racing in GB
