fiveways News from Downs Junior School in Ditchling Road...

DOWNS JUNIOR SCHOOL - TAKE SHELTER

Saturdays Throughout May 12pm – 4pm Tours of our original WW2 air raid shelter & 1940s themed events This May at Downs Junior School sees the Grand Opening of our Underground Museum, when we will be opening our original WW2 air raid shelter to the public for tours. The refurbishment is now complete and we have painstakingly constructed room scenes with original items such as: 1940s kitchen, bedroom and school scenes. There are plenty of interactive features for all ages; we even have the original 1940s toilets! (Don’t 5 worry, we have some modern loos too.) The event also takes place above ground with a huge programme of 1940s themed acts and stalls, amazing performances from singers, tea dances, performance pieces, ‘Tea and talk’ with a WW2 veteran. These events will vary each week so please check our Facebook page for upto-date information. We will have stalls galore with ‘Guess the weight of the suitcase’, ‘Win a ration box’, ‘Slam the Spam’ tin can alley, vintage stalls, Home Front stall where you can get your very own rations, old-fashioned sweet stall, and our local WI will be on hand to offer thrifty tips.

There will be a pop-up 1940s photo booth, complete with fake moustaches and 40s attire for you to feel the part. And if all that vintage stuff just isn’t your bag, don’t worry - there will still be all your fair favourites. You can even win a goldfish in a bag (a plastic one, I might add), and of course there will be a vintage tea shop serving cream teas with lashings of cream and jam! This event will transport you back in time to WW2; we will have regular tours of the air raid shelter throughout the day for visitors wishing to experience what life was like during the war. Some slots are bookable on the day but to guarantee your tour we advise booking in advance through our easy-to-use online booking system. This event is a fundraiser to maintain the museum as an educational resource for local schools and groups for generations to come. Prices for tours are £2 per adult / £1 per child. All other stalls are priced individually; there are also lots of free activities and all performances are free to watch. We hope you can join us in May for a trip down memory lane for young and old and everyone in-between. PAYNE TERRACE, ROEDALE ROAD Built in 1905, and named after the builder Mr Payne, who lived at No 2, these were eight small flats, and are still to be found in Roedale Road, just above Hollingdean Street. In 1915, when the photograph was taken, the only other houses to the north were those seen, which is Hollingbury Place. The track behind the terrace is now Dudley Road, and the track in the foreground is Hollingdean Terrace. Serious development of these roads started in the 1920s.

QUIZ QUESTION TWO:

What is the French word for spring?

fiveways City Reads have announced the book for 2016...

CITY READS 2016 – THE GOOD SON BY PAUL MCVEIGH Brighton & Hove’s chosen BIG READ for 2016 is “The Good Son” by Paul McVeigh, as City Reads becomes part of the Brighton Festival’s 50th anniversary celebrations. “The Good Son” is a bitter-sweet tale, set in 1980s Belfast. Mickey Donnelly is smart, which isn’t a good thing in his part of town. Despite having a dog called Killer and being in love with the girl next door, everyone calls him ‘gay’. It doesn’t help that his best friend is his little sister and that everyone knows he loves his ma more than anything in the world. Sarah Hutchings, Artistic Director of City Reads, said: “This outstanding debut from Brighton-based Northern Irish writer Paul McVeigh was the perfect choice as this 9 year marks the centenary of the Easter Rising, a rebellion that led to the eventual signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the creation of Northern Ireland, which is where the story is set. I defy anyone not to fall in love with its protagonist Mickey Donnelly. I hope you love it as much as we do.” From its launch on World Book Day (3 March) to the final event at Brighton Festival on 29 May, there’s a wide range of events encouraging residents across the city to get reading and start talking. Highlights include: an Irish Whiskey Tasting on St Patrick’s Day (17 March), with readings

QUIZ QUESTION FOUR:

What do crocuses grow from?

fiveways With news from the Local Action Team ..

VIEW FROM THE LAT - 3G FOOTBALL PITCHES... Amongst the worries expressed when Dorothy Stringer put in its application for an artificial 3G floodlit football pitch was a concern that there could be potential long-term health issues associated with it. Now just under a year after the development began (in a rush before the planning conditions had even been met), it appears that parents of pitch-users may indeed have cause to be worried. The issue involves a cocktail of potentially toxic chemicals contained in the surface of these pitches, added in part to ensure that the ball bounces. Derived from recycled car tyres, this so-called ‘crumb rubber’ also helps to reduce wear and absorb water. Interestingly, the Professional Footballers’ Association 15 – the body that represents professional players – called for more research into the health and safety implications of playing on these artificial surfaces two years ago. A study carried out by Amy Griffin, a former international US soccer player, found that 200 athletes who used this type of pitch had developed cancer, and out of these, 158 had been footballers. This might be easily dismissed on the grounds that football is commonly played on this type of surface, and cancer is no discriminator, striking both young and old alike. However, the particularly telling evidence in Griffin’s report is the fact that out of those 158 players, no less than 95 – nearly two out of three – were goalkeepers. This simply does not accord with what would be anticipated. Given that a football team consists of 11 players, there should only have been approximately 14 goalkeepers in this total. Instead, the rate of cancer in goalkeepers playing on these 3G pitches is nearly 7 times higher than average, based on Griffin’s data. Could this reflect the fact that goalkeepers are diving onto the surface more than any other player? They are probably getting minor scratches and handling the ball more frequently as well, which has been in close contact with the surface.

Why has there been no proper study carried out into the safety of these pitches? Nigel Maguire, chief executive of NHS Cumbria until he retired early to look after his son, Lewis – a keen young goalkeeper who contracted cancer, aged 18 - recently commented: “This multibillion-dollar industry is conducting an industrial scale experiment on our kids – it’s a scandal.” How can Brighton and Hove Council justify lending a significant sum of money enabling this commercial development to go ahead, without seemingly first ensuring that it would definitely be safe for our children to play on? Say “NO”! to surgery and take one giant leap for SkinKind! Lipofirm Pro, Trilipo, DMA Fat Reduction, Skin Tightening & Body Contouring, now at New Dawn! NEW to Brighton (This replaces all previous iLipo & Lipofirm Plus treatments)! Over the last 6 years, here at New Dawn, we have had many varied anti-ageing and fat reduction treatments in the clinic, all of which have had their limitations and whilst they have been effective, we wanted the best for our clients. Therefore, the old pieces of technology have been replaced by the acclaimed Lipofirm Pro. We are now able treat a much larger area per session and once a week treatments for faster results.

So how does it work? TriLipo technology is an advanced solution for non-invasive body and facial contouring. The treatment combines TriLipo Radiofrequency technology with Dynamic Muscle Activation, (DMA), for optimal fat reduction and skin tightening results!

The Tri-polar radio frequency, creates new collagen production deep in your skins layers this new collagen comes to the surface of the skin where it plumps, tones and tightens resulting in younger firmer skin, reduction in lines, enlarged pores and scar tissue.

DMA effectively gives your muscles a work outby gently contracting the muscle, creating lift and tone, for fat reduction this contraction causes the fat to be safely squeezed from the fat cell resulting in inch loss.

The treatment is a safe, quick and painless (although not without a heat and prickling sensation) “walk-in walk-out” solution with no downtime. The safety and efficacy of the treatment has been proven in clinical trials and treatment is effective on all skin types. We are the ONLY Clinic in Brighton to offer this treatment and are very pleased, both ourselves and our clients have not been disappointed by the result. Great discounts available in March, book now for your free consultation!

fiveways Get your trainers out of hibernation and head down to Preston Park...

Participants can walk or run a one, three or six mile course to raise life-changing money for Sport Relief 2016 and make a difference to people living across the UK and the world’s poorest communities. QUIZ QUESTION SIX:

And who wrote the music for The Rite of Spring?

fiveways Welcome to the March edition of Fiveways Gardens....

FIVEWAYS GARDENS MARCH 2016 It’s time to spruce up the garden in time for the major burst of growth that’s coming over the next few months. Somehow, the fresh new leaves of spring never look great set amongst the brown decaying mush of the previous year’s growth. All the bugs and beasties that were happily overwintering in the leaf litter and hollow stems are most likely up and about by now so it’s time for a clearout. Tidying now also helps keep plant diseases at bay. Most of what we grow is really pretty hardy in all senses, but if you’ve a favourite plant, say a lovely rose that has black spots on the leaves, then clearing them both off the plant and from the ground under 23 the plant helps keep the problem contained. Fungicides are available but more recent studies are showing that they can do more harm than good as they wipe out “good” fungus too… As usual in gardening, you takes your choice. A common question at this time of year is what to do with Narcissus and other bulbous plants once they have finished flowering. It’s best to deadhead but leave the leaves to enable the plant to put its energy back into the bulb for next year. Adding a bit

STREAKERS HAIR STUDIO Professional Hairdressing in a Fun Friendly Salon. Reduced rates for Senior Citizens and Students on Monday, Tuesdays & Wednesdays Men’s cuts from £9.50

of fertiliser at this time, especially if the flowers were disappointing this year, is a good idea. It’s not too late to prune shrubs and trees if you’ve not got round to it before. So long as severe frosts aren’t on the horizon, now’s a good time to prune lavenders and other silver and grey leaved Mediterranean-type plants. This will keep the plants looking compact and full of leaf right down to the ground. Now’s also a good time to clear out your pond. Get rid of some of the old plants, splitting them and replanting in fresh aquatic soil if they didn’t perform particularly well last year, or just throwing a load out – leave them on the edge of the pond for a few days to let some of the life make its way back to the water. MACMILLAN COASTAL GARDEN TRAIL

HALLIFAX CARE ANNUAL CAKE AND JAM SALE

2016 sees the 5th annual Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail taking place to raise money to support the newly constructed Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton (next to the Royal Sussex County Hospital).

Do you enjoy marmalade on your toast in the morning or do you enjoy jam on your scones for tea? If so, have you tried our homemade Seville orange marmalade or homemade cherry, plum, apricot and damson jams?

The centre is set to open its doors this spring. Geoff Stonebanks’ Driftwood Fundraising Group has now raised over £32,000 for the building of the centre and this year’s funds will contribute to its maintenance, upkeep and running costs! Would you like to open your garden to help raise25 money for this stellar charity? There are already nearly 20 gardens set to open their garden gates between Brighton & Hove and Eastbourne. All will open between 11am and 5pm on both Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July, many deciding to serve home-made tea and cakes but this is not compulsory. If you’d just like to open and share your own plot with like-minded visitors, that would be wonderful. Full liability insurance provided by Macmillan. The trail website has all the details or call Geoff on 01323 899296 for more details. www.macmillangardentrail.co.uk

Each year the staff of Hallifax Care, a locally based homecare agency opposite St Matthias’ Church on Ditchling Road, make wonderful cakes and jams to raise money for charity. With the support of the people around the local area, we raised £1,500 last year. As well as thanking those who tried our goodies last year, we just wanted to let everyone know that once again we will be having our cake and jam sale on the day the schools break up: THURSDAY 24th MARCH. The sale is just in time for Easter gifts or feeding hungry children in the Easter holiday. This year once again we are raising money for Whoopsadaisy based in Preston Park, St John Ambulance and Sussex Voiceworks.

On the 1987 hit ‘What have I done to deserve this?’, who collaborated with Dusty Springfield?

fiveways The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah Stubbs...

LEMON CARDAMOM CAKE A deliciously moist lemon cake with the delicate hint of aromatic cardamom. Ingredients: 250g butter or margarine 4 large eggs 250g caster sugar 250g self-raising flour 2 lemons zested and juiced 12 cardamom pods Drizzle: juice of 1 lemon 1 tablespoon caster sugar Icing: 27 225g butter, room temperature250g butter or margarine 4 large eggs 250g caster sugar 250g self-raising 450g icing sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 10 cardamom pods, seeds ground to powder 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 tablespoons lemon curd Method: Grease two 20cm round sandwich cake tins and line the bases with non-stick baking paper. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. • Finely grate the zest from the lemons. Bash the cardamom pods with a rolling pin on a chopping board to release the seeds, discard the hard green pod and grind the seeds until fine using a pestle and mortar or the end of your rolling pin.

• To make the icing, place the soft butter, ground cardamom and vanilla essence into a bowl and whisk until pale and creamy, gradually add the icing sugar and 1 tablespoon of the lemon juice, beating until smooth. The icing needs to be easy to spread so if it is too stiff add a little more lemon juice. • When the cake has cooled, place one half onto a serving plate and spread with some of the icing, spoon over the lemon curd and place the second layer on top, gently pressing down. Spread the rest of the icing over the top and sides of the cake and decorate with mini eggs for Easter or primroses for Mother’s Day. Sarah Stubbs is a local Kitchen Coach, passionate about teaching traditional home baking through her locally held lessons, workshops and baking group. Sarah also sells delicious cakes and home baked hampers locally. https://letscookathome.co.uk/blog/ www.letscookathome.co.uk Facebook: Let’s Cook at Home Twitter: letscookathome 01273 646474 / 07905 701386

• Put the butter and sugar in a large bowl and whisk until pale and creamy. Add the flour, egg, lemon zest and ground cardamom then whisk again until all the ingredients are combined. Spoon the batter into the prepared tins and smooth the tops.

• Bake in the oven for about 25 minutes, until the sponges are golden brown and springy to the touch. Allow to cool in the tins for 5 minutes and then turn onto a wire rack. Spoon the drizzle mix over the warm sponges and leave to cool.

QUIZ QUESTION TEN : What date in Spring do the clocks change?

fiveways Here is a follow up article about the Oral History Project...

STORIES OF TEENAGE LOVE, LOSS AND REBELLION FOR FREE ORAL HISTORY APP In our January issue we shared the news of a Brighton & Hove oral history project which has been supporting students from Longhill School to recruit, interview and photograph people with a story to tell about being a teenager in Brighton & Hove in the 40s, 50s & 60s. Since then, the Giddy project has staged four Memory Days attracting 33 people to come and tell their stories of giddy love, loss and rebellion – all of which will be used to create a free oral history app. Using GPS navigation technology, the Giddy app will take users on an alternative walking tour of the city, punctuated by the personal histories straight from the mouths 37 of the people who lived them. Histories such as those told by the Fiveways man who, after a gig in 1969, met Jimi Hendrix in a beaten-up MG at the Dome stage door. He recounts how, after having his tambourine signed by the man himself, he was chased by a gaggle of screaming fans through the North Laine, narrowly missing being mobbed. Also, the lady who told of finding first love and first kisses in Preston Park at the age of 13, and was subsequently forbidden by her parents to see her boyfriend

Artist/Illustrator again. Forty years later she managed to find him online and they’ve been together ever since. And the Kemptown-based man who described his passion for fashion and music and how it led him to Brighton clubland and eventually discovering his gay sexuality. Carina Westling of The Nimbus Group, the Brighton arts collective behind Giddy, says: “We wanted to use digital technology to create something that celebrates the stuff of life that unites us as humans; that reveals our individuality but also highlights universal themes associated with youth that span the generations.

Oral history offers a perspective of the past that stands outside the received wisdom of the history books. Our intention for Giddy is to bring history to life in such a way that the young (or not so young) people who hear these stories will never look at older people in quite the same way again.” Giddy will be launching as part of Brighton Festival in May. TRY A TRIATHLON IN 2016 FOCUS, LOOK, LISTEN Registration is now open for a new triathlon taking place in September 2016. The event has a maximum of 1,500 places, with categories for elite athletes, experienced, intermediate and new participants.

The triathlon was given the go-ahead by councillors at the Economic Development and Culture Committee last June and is supported by Brighton & Hove City Council. The first Brighton & Hove Triathlon will take place on Sunday 11th September and is based mainly on Hove Lawns. A sea swim will be followed by cycling along nearby closed roads before the final run stage takes place on Hove Promenade and Lawns, heading out towards the West Pier and the i360 before crossing the finish line with the city’s iconic views as a backdrop. There are three race distances available, including the standard distance; 1500m swim followed by a 40km cycle and ending with a 10km run; and the smallest distance, the Super Sprint 400m swim, 5km cycle and 2.5km run. In addition, a big outdoor Sport and Fitness Show will run over both days of the triathlon weekend. To register for the triathlon, visit www.brightonandhovetriathlon.com .

The road safety mantra for crossing the roads has been “Stop, Look, Listen” – from when we were in primary school. Failure to look properly is the biggest cause of collisions in the city – for all road users. Modern life gives us many distractions – mobile phones/devices and headphones. However, being human, we are often caught up in our thoughts and emotions when using the roads. Worries on what we have to do – or anger at what has happened in our lives – can mask our full attention from the road. Taking time to be aware of how we are feeling and accepting that – before we get on the roads – can help us focus on the roads when we are using them. Roads remain probably the riskiest environment we use each day – walking/cycling/driving or riding. The new “Focus, Look, Listen” campaign reminds all road users in the city that a clear focus on the roads allows you to look and listen effectively, able to make the best decisions. Join the discussion with stories and factors on the Facebook page: Share the Roads, Brighton & Hove.
