QUIZ QUESTION ONE:
The Officer Training School for which branch of the British military is located at Sandhurst?
fiveways There’s a party coming up for a local nursery…
LITTLE EARTHWORMS CELEBRATE THEIR 10TH BIRTHDAY Little Earthworms nursery in Ditchling Road are celebrating their 10th birthday, after opening in March 2010. On 4th April, they will be holding a big reunion party at Stanford Avenue Methodist Church for everyone who has ever attended or worked at the nursery. One of the proprietors, Sylvia Roberts, told us more… What makes Little Earthworms different?
We hope the next 10 years could maybe go just a fraction slower (!) so we can really live in the now and enjoy continuing to grow and nurture our amazing community of Little Earthworms families! We might have a few ideas and changes up our sleeves, but you will have to come along and visit us to find out more!
At Little Earthworms we always want to put the children and their families first, really making sure the children get that loving, nurturing and educational foundation before going off to school. Alongside that, our eco themes run strong so that all our children have these simple planet-sustaining practices as part of their life to carry forward with them. From growing our own vegetables to recycling and being mindful of the resources we are using…and all this is done in such a simple and fun way that it’s all just part of normal nursery life! What are the highlights of your last 10 years? We could talk about awards but the most amazing thing for us has been watching our nursery grow from strength to strength, having a brilliant team of staff over the years who have loved and cared for the children and really carried our ethos forward. Mostly we have enjoyed seeing our family of Little Earthworm children grow into a community and sending them off to school knowing they are happy and fulfilled by our nursery and ready for their next adventure. Really being part of these families’ lives and supporting them and having the privilege of looking after all these amazing children over the years is definitely the highlight for us! Do you have any special plans for the future? The last 10 years have simply flown by!

What can people expect at the party? The party is going to be great! We will be having a disco, some party food and it is going to be so much fun catching up with everyone! Many of our old and current families have already confirmed they will be coming. The 10-Year Reunion Party is on Saturday 4th April from 2.30-4.30pm at Stanford Avenue Methodist Church. Everyone is welcome. For more information, visit littleearthworms.co.uk, email info@littleearthworms.co.uk or phone 01273 243182.

ST MATTHIAS CHURCH In 1901 an iron church was opened with Rev Frank Morgan as the first curate-in-charge. It faced into Ditchling Road with just open country behind and Harrington Farm in the valley below. The iron church can be seen in this photo from 1906. fiveways Dietary advice from specialist health coach Julian Watkins…
FIVEWAYS HEALTH COACH Question: I’m trying to cut back on processed food but finding it hard. My eight-year-old, Katia, and I were in Brighton Museum at the weekend looking at Stone Age people. It’s unnerving to be up close with the five-thousand-year-old skeleton of someone who lived and breathed here on our hills and beaches. I thought about the harsh world they inhabited. One female had evidence of two periods of famine. Severe winters and scarcity of food would be her normal life. This is the environment of our ancestors. How did they get through the challenge of eating more calories than they expended? To turn down food or be less skilled at recognizing energy-rich food meant a reduced chance of lasting the inevitable scarcity to come. The majority didn’t make it. You’re descended from the winners. Just like a horse bred for speed, you were selected to crave high-energy food and preserve those hard-won calories.
takes before they even happen. For further reading I recommend “The Pleasure Trap” by Doug Lisle and Alan Goldhamer.
We’re survival machines. Our problem is we now live in the wrong environment. It’s a world of excess: not a world of famines and harsh winters. We crave and store calories efficiently but the scarcity never comes. Small wonder it is so difficult to maintain our desired weight.
Be well, Fiveways!
Processed food is designed to be addictive and coming off it is often the biggest challenge my clients face. We work with many behaviour change techniques, for example, a premortem approach where we project to a future event and learn from our potential mis-

Which pilot, the first female to fly solo from London to Australia, was presumed dead after she bailed out of her plane over the river Thames in January 1941?
fiveways News from the council...
HOLLINGBURY PARK GOLF COURSE Brighton & Hove city councillors on the Policy & Resources Committee decided on 23rd January to retain an 18hole golf course at Hollingbury Park Golf Course and that Waterhall Golf Course will be restored to chalk grasslands through a rewilding plan. Councillors also agreed that the council will enter into a three-year lease agreement with the preferred leaseholder for Hollingbury Park Golf Course which will see it remaining as an 18-hole golf course. From 1 April 2020 the course will be managed by a Special Purpose Vehicle which will be a subsidiary of an already established registered charity in the city. Councillor Alan Robins, chair of the city’s Tourism, 13 Equalities, Communities and Culture committee and a member of the Policy & Resources Committee, said: “The leasing of Waterhall and Hollingbury Park Golf Courses offers opportunities for local people to invest in our city, it continues golf in the city as well as re-wilding public land, and this is good news for continuing access for everyone - at both locations.” It was also agreed that the council will enter into a longer 22-year lease agreement with the registered charity once they have obtained planning permission to extend and enhance the existing club house.
The proposal sees the creation of a multipurpose facility encompassing sport, health, mindfulness and education with a green agenda and there’s also a longer term proposal to create an ecology, landscape and National Park information centre together with conservationist group partners.

News from the council…
COULD YOU BE A COMPASSIONATE NEIGHBOUR?
COUNCIL EXPLORING ‘CAR-FREE’ CITY CENTRE
Martlets is launching a new community-led project, Compassionate Neighbours, aimed at tackling loneliness and isolation for people living with terminal illness. Compassionate Neighbours is a national social move14 that has been ment successful in other parts of the UK. Martlets is now introducing this programme locally. The programme aims to provide a group of trained neighbours who offer their time and companionship to local people struggling with loneliness and in need of support. A Compassionate Neighbour can help by arranging regular visits, offering a listening ear and emotional support or helping people to do activities they enjoy and stay connected to their local community and family and friends. Anyone interested in becoming a Compassionate Neighbour should contact Elmien Brink, project lead, by emailing cn@martlets.org.uk, visiting www.martlets.org.uk/cn or telephone 01273 273400. Please note that Compassionate Neighbours is a voluntary programme. Volunteers must be aged over 18. The training days for Compassionate Neighbours will be on 18 and 25 April (Hove) and 3, 10, 17 and 24 June (Central Brighton).
Brighton & Hove city councillors have agreed to explore the possibility of the city becoming ‘car-free’ by 2023. Members of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, meeting at the end of January, requested a report that explores the feasibility and costs of developing a car-free city. The report will be presented to them in October 2020. It will also look at costs and practicalities of any project or any possible exemptions. The committee’s chair Anne Pissaridou said: “We were elected on a manifesto pledge to make our city carbon neutral by 2030. We have declared a climate emergency and are making progress on decarbonisation. But we must take major steps to reach our ambitious target, so we are proud to work cross-party and champion a car-free city centre. Crucially though, this will be for the climate assembly to decide, as our residents must lead on how we combat the climate crisis.” Councillors also noted that the joint notice of motion should be considered by the city’s Climate Assembly, which is due to meet this spring.

QUIZ QUESTION FIVE:
Who was the father of Zeus?
fiveways More advice on dog activities from Hannah at The Pet Shed in Preston Drove…
DO MORE WITH YOUR DOG… So how are you getting on with doing more with your dog? Did you make a puzzle or a tug toy with a piece of old material? Did you check out other ideas on social media? I would love to see your creations so do feel free to tag the shop on social media or email your pictures to hannah@thepetshedbrighton.co.uk For this month’s challenge I would like you to get out and about more. If you are a little fed up with your usual dog walk around the park, think about how your dog feels. Whilst they love meeting up with friends the same old smells could be a little boring so why not take him further afield? You don’t have to go far as we have many amazing parks in Brighton but here are three suggestions (with cafés!) that are no more than 15 minutes outside of Brighton in a car. These are also all accessible by bus or train (which is an adventure for your dog in its own right!) The undercliff: Park in the multi-storey car park at Brighton Marina and walk along the undercliff. Grab a cuppa at the Ovingdean café and head back. Don’t forget that dogs are permitted on all beaches in Brighton & Hove from 1 October to 30 April. Check signs for dog-friendly beaches outside of these times. Devil’s Dyke: Explore the amazing views of the South Downs and finish with a drink or lunch at The Devil’s Dyke pub. Shoreham Harbour: Drive along Basin Road and park at the end. You can then explore the beach, the harbour and finish with a cuppa at Carats Café Bar. And further afield but well worth the drive (about 40 minutes)… Seven Sisters Country Park: Head through Seaford to find 280 hectares of chalk cliffs, meandering river valley and open chalk grassland. Take in the surroundings and relax at Saltmarsh café and rooms, located behind the visitors centre.
Remember to pack treats for energy (we do a number of dog energy bars at The Pet Shed), a chew to keep your dog busy when you stop at the café and a supply of water for you both. Hannah is the current proud pet parent of 16 including her dog (Bourbon, a regular at her shop), 3 cats, Starsky the Tortoise, 2 snakes, turkeys, chickens and a guinea pig. Congratulations to Hannah for making it into the F:Entrepreneur list of the top 100 female entrepreneurs in the country!

Launched only last summer, our Tree Project has truly taken off and it’s already clear that our aim to plant 50 new trees by 2025 is set to succeed.
Our volunteer helpers, tree sponsors and Just Giving donors have come together in a most fantastic community spirit. Three planting days this winter (two in incessant rain!) sees 13 trees in the ground and at we have funds and pledges for 23 more – so get in touch soon for a chance to reserve one of the last 14!
future proofing our park’s trees The project adds 20 new species to the existing 158 trees of around 80 different species. Maintaining tree numbers mitigates impact of climate change and natural ageing, whilst diversity of species encourages wildlife and gives us greater seasonal interest and colour.
Our trees are 3 years old and come from specialist suppliers Hillier Trees – expert growers for over 150 years (and by Royal Appointment don’t you know!). This winter we have planted 3 oak trees, 3 sweetgum trees, 2 juneberries, 2 cherry trees, a pear, a hawthorn and a red berry rowan.

thanks for all your support! Brighton and Hove City Council have been very supportive & we are especially grateful to our dedicated Park Ranger Emma and her team. Thanks also to Pride Social Impact Fund for a grant that pays for essential potash, soil nutrients & bark mulch for the new trees.
gazing at our new info wall Here’s a picture that captures exactly what we hoped our new info wall would encourage – interest in the story behind Blakers Park, its trees, wildlife and community events. The panel launches our Park Life Project, designed to capture what makes our park so special in a free online publication which is updated annually, creating a visual, digital history of the park for the next generation.
special thanks to... Tarah Conan for the fantastic background image of autumn leaves in the park. We would also like to thank Morgan Carn Architects and our local 2016 Ward Councillors for supporting the production of the panels.

volunteers needed to water our new trees
friday mornings
From mid spring to the end of the growing season we need to give each new tree a good soaking or, more precisely, about 30 litres of water per week to help it get established in 20 its new location.
Starting at Easter and going on throughout the summer we’ll be getting together once a week to water our new trees. If you can spare an hour – even if it’s every other week – and would like to join our merry band please drop us a line:
At the same time we will also closely monitor trees for any early signs of stress such as discolouring leaves, leaf drop or leaves drying out. After the first year watering can be every two weeks to encourage the root systems to find adequate water and nutrients from the surrounding soil.

of april 2020

QUIZ QUESTION EIGHT:
Your friendly local newsagents!
The following words come from which film: “We’re gonna need a bigger boat”?
fiveways News from the council…
NEW LAW TO PROTECT ANIMALS A new law covering the sale of puppies and kittens is due to come into effect from April. ‘Lucy’s Law’ will mean that puppies and kittens can no longer be sold by a pet shop or commercial dealer unless they have bred the animal themselves. Instead, anyone looking to buy or adopt a puppy or kitten under six months must either deal directly with the breeder or an animal rehoming centre. The law is named after Lucy, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, who died after be23 ing subjected to terrible conditions on a puppy farm. Dogs like Lucy are often kept by breeders to produce multiple litters of puppies, which are taken from their mothers at just a few weeks old and advertised online or sold in pet shops. Brighton & Hove City Council plays a key part in the fight to protect animal welfare. Many activities involving animals such as selling pets, breeding dogs for sale, boarding cats or dogs or day care for dogs require a licence from the council. Each licence holder is inspected. The council’s chair of licensing, Councillor Jackie O’Quinn, said: “We do a lot of work to make sure businesses working with animals in the city treat them correctly, so please do always follow the guidance if you’re thinking of getting a pet. We come across awful stories of animals kept in horrendous conditions from unscrupulous people dealing illegally in dogs and cats. Sometimes the puppies and kittens never recover. So please never buy a pet without checking the trader’s licence and the conditions they’ve been kept in.” If you’re thinking of buying a cat or dog, follow these guidelines to help combat the illegal trade in pet animals:
•
consider getting a rescue animal from a reputable UK rehoming organisation – you can check if the organisation is a member of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes • if you’re thinking of buying a puppy, always ask to see a copy of the trader’s licence or ask for the licence number so you can check with the local council • never buy a puppy or kitten without asking to see them with their mum and the conditions they live in • never buy a puppy or kitten younger than eight weeks old. If you have any concerns, contact the council’s Animal Warden team by emailing animalwardens@brighton-hove.gov.uk or calling 01273 294266.
