Welcome to our May edition!!
Well, what can I say...it’s Fiveways, it’s May, it’s Open House season!! And true to form this issue has a good representation of different open houses featuring in the local area this Festival month.
The Fiveways Artists are the best known artist group in the city and the whole Open House phemonenon was started right here in Fiveways with this group so they take pride of place with an article and some images on page 20 and 21. Spread through this month’s issue you will find various other items relating to open houses including an open day at the Fiveways Playentre in Florence Road, inviting the whole family along to enjoy a crafty day of making things.
There are other items that aren’t festival related so we hope you find something of interest in the Directory this month! Have a great May! The Fiveways Directory Team 01273 551021 info@fivewaysdirectory.co.uk www.fivewaysdirectory.co.uk

Interview with Edana Minghella who is a resident of Fiveways.
Fiveways Face... Edana Minghella Jazz singer and writer Edana Minghella lives in Chester Terrace. She is a member of the famous Minghella ice cream family and sister of the late film director Anthony Minghella. She will be performing her tribute to Billie Holiday at the Brighton Fringe Festival in May. What do you most like about living in Fiveways? Our wonderful community of all sorts of interesting people, shops and places to eat. I love being able to walk into town or get out on the Downs. I was brought up by the sea (on the Isle of Wight) so being able to see the sea from the garden is a treat. Anything in Fiveways you would like to change? Am I allowed to mention the P word? Yes, the Great Fiveways Parking Debacle! We hear you enjoy bread-making… There’s nothing like the smell of freshly-baked bread, plus kneading dough is very therapeutic! I love baking for others and will gladly bake a loaf for anyone having a hard time. I’ve been doing this for a couple of years now, and it’s brought me into contact with some lovely people. How long have you been singing professionally? About 8 years. When my brother Anthony made The Talented Mr Ripley, with its amazing jazz soundtrack, it reignited my love of jazz. I’ve been lucky enough to work with brilliant musicians including Liane Carroll and Guy Barker, both of whom appear on my debut CD, Still on My Feet, dedicated to Anthony, and available via my website www.edanaminghellajazz.com. Tell us about your concerts at the Brighton Fringe… Billie Holiday, one of my greatest influences, was born 100 years ago. It’s a privilege to celebrate her with two shows at Brunswick Pub in Hove (17th & 23rd May). I’m singing from her wonderful repertoire and telling
her tragic but inspiring story. I’m joined by my fab band including saxophonist Lee Goodall (ex- Van Morrison). I debuted this show at Brighton Fringe last year. It sold out twice over and received a lovely 5 star review. So I’m really looking forward to performing it again this year. Each night will be slightly different because there are so many fabulous Billie tunes to choose from, including classics like Lover Man and Them There Eyes. How can we get tickets? Brighton Fringe box office 01273 917272, or from One Stop Travel Shop, 26 North Street, or online www.brightonfringe.org

QUIZ QUESTION TWO: How have vegetables been cut which are served Julienne?
SONG OF THE MONTH
9 Keith of local lo-fi rockers Les Cactus & the Rumpy Pumpkins offers an election musical recommendation...
Les Cactus’ Tune Of the Month...
Don’t Trust Banks by Apache Dropout, 2013 It’s election time! A time for cool-headed, respectful, insightful debate! A time for logic! Sense! A time to rejoice proudly in our glorious democratic processes! According to some anyway. According to others, it’s a good time to campaign and protest against the status quo (I don’t mean the rock group, although it’s fair to say they aren’t to everyone’s taste). There is a strain of political or ‘protest’ song-writing which comes across as tediously preachy, with obvious messages we all know already and which serve little point in revisiting after hearing them once. But thankfully there have been plenty of belters created in the name of a good cause. Varied too - from the cheery ‘I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag’ by Country Joe and the Fish, the confrontational bombast of ‘Fight the Power’ by Public Enemy, the mournful devastation of ‘Strange Fruit’ by Billie Holiday, to the disco funk of ‘War’ by Edwin Starr. My pick for the times would be ‘Don’t Trust Banks’ by garage-rockers Apache Dropout. Everyone hates the banks, and the song’s weedy vocals and cruddy production values encapsulate a feeling of being squashed into submission by financial institutions beautifully. I dedicate it to the poll con-
ducted last year by the organisation Positive Money which showed that just over 1 in 10 MPs accurately understand how money is created in our economic system. According to Positive Money, 97% of our money supply is created by private banks when they issue loans. They create money out of thin air, allocate where it goes, and then charge interest on top. Thank goodness they’re such trust-worthy, socially responsible institutions, or else the banks would reign supreme, we’d have ever-increasing debt levels and inequality, unaffordable house prices, squeezed public services, and the continued evaporation of democracy... Oh well. To quote Apache Dropout: “You must be poor. Again.” Happy voting. Nine times out of ten it’s faulty lead flashings and firewalls causing these problems. The majority of Brighton homes are at least 100 years old and so are their firewalls. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.

GARDENS
15
Brought to you each month by Fiveways gardening expert Lisa Attwell...
Fiveways Gardens... May 2015 Let’s consider some climbers for shady walls and fences. Lots of people have problems getting the shady side of the garden to look good, and as most of us have a wall or fence for a boundary, we’ll have a look at what can be done. Whilst there are a bunch of climbers that will thrive in shade, the simple truth is, they can take an age to get going. My tip therefore, is to spend out on a bigger plant than you might ordinarily buy. The light at ground level near a shady wall is much lower than the light a few feet off the ground. A good feed will also help, as will preparing the planting hole properly, adding some organic matter, and a mulch after planting will help conserve water. Plant your climber about a foot away from the wall and angle it towards the wall, as the soil’s better further away from the wall and wetter too. Do think about supports too – even the so-called self-clinging climbers need help in the first few years. Keep them well watered through the growing season. So which plants to consider? Although they won’t flower as well as they would on a sunny wall, it’s worth considering both deciduous and evergreen honeysuckles. Lonicera ‘Halliana’ is a good evergreen, and our native Lonicera ‘Graham Thomas’ – arguably the best scent – is a good deciduous option. Keep them hard pruned after flowering so they don’t get twiggy. There are various Clematis to consider, including: Clematis alpina, C. macropetala, C. montana, C. Jackmanii Group. As Clematis prefer their roots cool, a semi-shady position can suit them well, but only if they’re getting some sunshine. More unusual is Akebia quinata or chocolate vine as it’s sometimes called. It has very pretty semi-evergreen foliage, and if it gets a bit of sun, has delicate little chocolate-scented flowers. Stauntonia hexaphylla and Holboellia latifolia are well worth checking out. They are in flower now and smell divine. Again, although they’ll flower better in full sun, they will do quite well in some shade and they’re evergreen. Take a trip out to our
BELL’S
An excellent wall shrub for encouraging birds and bees into your garden is Pyracantha. Yes, I know it has thorns, but if it’s kept pruned properly, I think it’s a really useful and pretty plant for the garden. In spring it has a mass of lovely white blossom that’s great for bees, and its berries are also pretty and good for birds. Plus, its leaves colour red in autumn. There are yellow, orange or red berry types of Pyracanthas. Ivy isn’t always the most popular plant, but there are lots of really nice cultivars and, quite simply, they do better in dry deep shade than most other plants. Lisa

BOOK REVIEW
17
BBC book reviewer and local resident,Gary Mepsted reviews another book…
A Pleasure and a Calling
by Phil Hogan. Black Swan, paperback. £7.99 Discovering a new author is always a delight, especially if, like me, you’ve become rather bitter and cynical regarding the current state of the contemporary novel. I made a bold claim to my partner some weeks ago that I was going to restrict my fiction reading to old favourites and those classics I’d not gotten around to. And then, quite by chance, I discovered Phil Hogan’s latest novel, “A Pleasure and a Calling”, which I devoured almost instantly and then turned immediately to Amazon to order whatever else was available by him. The premise of “Pleasure” is simple and brilliantly intriguing: what if the estate agent who sold you your property kept a set of keys and could and, indeed, does let himself into your home when you’re away and, even more creepily, when you’re present, secreting himself in the loft or an unused bedroom. William Heming is just such a person, a man involved far too intimately in the lives of those who populate his beloved little community. Mr Heming is every citizen’s nightmare, a seemingly normal, friendly and infinitely helpful individual who likes nothing more than to dig himself in to other people’s private worlds like a malevolent tick. “A Pleasure and a Calling” is one of the most disturbing novels I’ve read in a long time. You might, as I did, find yourself reading and thoroughly enjoying it whilst, at the same time, being repelled by the contents. The novel is genuinely horrific - but not in the way in which, say, Stephen King would understand the term. Yes, there are deaths, of which I’ll say no more, and Mr Heming is a real monster - a man with a dreadfully skewed sense of morality, but so clever and compelling is the writing that you find yourself rooting for Mr H and hoping that he will escape justice. The story, told in the first person, is masterfully constructed; the writing is both elegant and assured and extraordinarily readable. The novel has the pace and tension of

a thriller, and the sociological and psychological acuity of the best ‘literary’ fiction. If you’re not creeped out by the premise (I did warn you), “A Pleasure and a Calling” will effortlessly draw you in to its dark and deviant world. It’s a novel that you will not easily or quickly forget. Mr Heming is likely to haunt both your waking and sleeping hours. I recommend “A Pleasure and a Calling” most highly.

The Fiveways Artists Op The Fiveways Artists Group was set up in 1981 by artist Ned Hoskins who pioneered the whole concept of Open Houses. Initially with only a handful of houses opening during the Brighton Festival in the ‘80s, the whole notion of Open Houses rapidly grew over the next thirty years, not only within the Fiveways area but throughout Brighton and beyond. It’s amazing to think that Ned’s idea sparked off such an enormous Brighton phenomenon, and that he continues to open his house every year. The Fiveways area is unique in its number of resident artists living and working so closely together, and the sheer volume of contemporary art, crafts and photography available to the public during May is amazing. With such a strong sense of community here, it’s hard

Here we feature an excellent family additton to the May Open House season...
Fiveways Playcentre - May Open House Fiveways Playcentre on Florence Road will be once again hosting its very own Open House on Saturday, 16th May to coincide with this year’s Artists’ Open Houses and the Brighton Festival. It will be very much a family-focused affair with an emphasis on arts and crafts. This year, this will be combined with a toy and clothing sale. The nursery children are also very much involved and their artwork, created at the setting, will also be on display for parents, grandparents and the general public to buy. A range of fabulous drop-in arts and crafts activities are planned throughout the day and help will be on hand to get those creative juices flowing. You and your children will be able to learn how to make a host of beautiful things and take them home at the end of the session to create your very own house of art! What’s more, there will also be face painters standing by to transform your little one into their very own superhero, fairy, insect or cartoon character. Alongside all this fun, Fiveways will be selling a fantastic array of homemade cakes, delicacies and refreshments, including tea, coffee, and squash. Why not drop into Fiveways Playcentre between 11.00am and 2.30pm on Saturday, 16th May and let the kids get creative whilst you relax with a cup of tea and slice of delicious cake? Admission £2.00 per child to include all craft activities. Face painting will incur an additional charge. Adults FREE. About Fiveways Playcentre Fiveways is a registered non-for-profit charity that caters for over 200 children aged 2.5 to 11 years old in its preschool setting and before and after school clubs. It was first established in 1965 and since 2010 has been in its very own purpose-built building thanks to a grant from Sure Start, local authority funding and a £125,000 mortgage. The Playcentre relies on fundraising efforts like this year’s Open House to keep its head above the water and
continue to offer its services, so everything you can do to help is very much appreciated. If you would like further information about the centre or event, would like to donate a prize for our fundraising raffle or just want to help, please contact our team via 5ways@talktalkbusiness.net or on 01273 500257. www.fiveways-playcentre.co.uk facebook.com/fivewaysplaycentre
Cake Sale Thank You Each year before Easter, Hallifax Care hold a cake sale for charity. This year we chose Whoopsadaisy and the Lauren Hill Foundation. So generous is the support we receive from the people around Fiveways that this year we raised an amazing £1,450. A great day for all concerned, but especially for Whoopsadaisy who got the majority of the money.

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue
You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.
The Reality
The Law (C.R.A.G - charging for residential accommodation guide) allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £800 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for.
The Solution
For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two Trusts within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, prevent your home from being taken into account by the local authority altogether should you ever require care in the future.
The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as Trust beneficiaries for that particular Trust will subsequently have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy the survivor is protected from having to sell the property to pay for their care should they need it because it is not possible to sell just their half of the property and the Crag guidelines clearly state that the market value of half a property is £0. The second half of the property will then ultimately go into Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. The beneficiaries will at that stage have both halves safe and secure in Trust and will be able to share and dispose of the property according to the wishes of the settlors (the original owners of both halves). By leaving 1/2 the property into Trust on first death, the surviving partner can still sell the property to downsize if they wish and are not restricted in any way with regards to what they wish to do to or with the property - it simply means that it is safeguarded and therefore will definitely be able to be appointed to the chosen beneficiaries when the time comes. For sole owners immediately conveying at least half of your property into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and becoming a Trustee and primary beneficiary of the Trust with others nominated to become beneficiaries after your death is usually enough to take away the risk of the property being considered as an asset to be sold if care is required as the property is not absolutely owned by yourself anymore and again it is not possible to sell half a house or force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about how this strategy could be of real benefit to you and your family.
For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey at least 1/2 of your property into it which will produce the same result.
The Reasoning
When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. When the first partner dies, they leave their half into their trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the primary beneficiary which means that they have complete control over the property and what happens to it.

• To make the frosting heat the milk, brown sugar and butter in a saucepan over a gentle heat until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves. Increase the heat and bring to the boil, stirring for a couple of minutes. Add the icing sugar and stir with a whisk until the icing is smooth. Let it cool for a few minutes and then pour over the banana cake letting some run down the sides of the cake. BEAUTY SALON
33
The third and final article focussing on a local beauty salon...
Sarah Hurst Skin & Beauty In the last couple of issues we have introduced you to Sarah and the fantastic team at Sarah Hurst Skin & Beauty, but I’m sure that you are curious about what the salon can offer you. We caught up with Sarah herself to ask her some questions. What makes Sarah Hurst Skin & Beauty so different from other salons?
How’s business been since relocating to Carden Avenue?
Many of our brands are clinically trialled. This means that they are actually medically proven to work so will bring about changes. This is particularly true of our skincare ranges. We work on a ‘feed, fortify and finish’ approach, so we ‘feed’ the skin from the inside with Advanced Nutrition Programme supplements, ‘fortify’ the skin from the outside with Environ skincare and ‘finish’ with Jane Iredale mineral make-up which is a healthy make-up for the skin. We research all our products and treatments very carefully to ensure that we can offer the best.
The response has been amazing. Many people have been coming in, saying that they had heard of us, but because the studio was previously next to my house, they weren’t quite sure where we were. So this opened the way for those clients. We now have four treatment rooms rather than two - that means that we have more availability for people. The salon décor has a real wow factor and the feedback has all been very positive. We can’t wait to develop the salon further as we go forward!
We are a close-knit team who like to have fun and offer a very welcoming, relaxed and friendly salon. We offer personalised treatments and solutions by listening to our client’s needs. This is achieved by thorough, ongoing consultations and staff training, to ensure the client experience is exceptional and individual. We provide treatments that really work and can therefore improve self- confidence! Do you only offer skin treatments? No, although we love skin and believe this is a strong area for us, we do all beauty treatments and have a high customer base for hair removal, particularly electrolysis and waxing.
Can clients park easily? Oh yes. Lots of free, easy parking right outside! How can we find out more? We are holding an Open Day on Tuesday 28th April and we would love to welcome people along to chat with us and have a mini treatment if they want to.
OPEN DAY Tues 28th April 2pm - 8pm
Are your treatments only for women? No, we have a lot of men who visit us, in particular for hair removal treatments, but also skin treatments and massage. We are living in a ‘metrosexual’ society!

FITNESS
35
Some advice on getting fit and being healthy from local resident Marianne Clark…
So, you want to run a marathon? Top tips for aspiring marathoners
April 12th 2015, and another Brighton Marathon came and went in a blaze of sunshine. If you were watching, you couldn’t help but be moved by the atmosphere, the scale (10,000+ runners), the support, the rousing music, the pain and the glory of it all. And I bet more than a few of you thought “I fancy doing that”! With the right preparation and mental attitude you too can run 26.2 miles. But, before you get too carried away in that “Chariots of Fire” moment, here are a few things to consider. You can’t take it on half-heartedly or you’re destined for failure and injury. You must really want to do it and commit 100%. Don’t underestimate the commitment - mental and physical as well as the time required. Plan on six months, training at least three times a week. It’s tough training alone, especially when the mileage increases. Find a committed training buddy and you’ll really help each other through it. Marathon training can become a cause of serious domestic strife, so ensure your family is on board and understands what’s involved before you start.

Pick your event carefully. There are hundreds out there, (big, small, urban, rural, flat, hilly), but the atmosphere of a big city event like Brighton is hard to match. Enter early and plan well ahead - races sell out quickly, and some are ballot only. Time your event carefully. If you don’t want to train through the cold, dark winter, pick an autumn marathon. Fund-raise. Running for a heart-felt cause is really motivating and it will give your training added focus. Once you’ve committed, follow a proper training plan. You can’t wing it over 26 miles or you’ll get injured. Get an experienced coach to write a plan for you. If you have any health issues or concerns about your fitness to train, then get yourself checked out by your GP before you begin. Expect highs and lows, joy and disappointment along the way - marathon running is an unpredictable beast, however well you prepare. But you can guarantee an unparalleled sense of achievement and elation when you finally cross the line and complete your marathon adventure!
