As the Directory typically gets delivered at the end of the month and the beginning of the next you may be reading this having not yet experienced this year’s annual Fiveways Halloween trick or treating circuit! I was only vaguely aware of it until I became a father and now it is an annual event that really brings out the best in the creative Fiveways community! Some of the doors are brilliant and for that reason I would actually recommend the evening to all regardless of whether you have children or not...maybe borrow a child for a few hours if you feel foolish going around on your own!

Recycle, re-use, re-love quality second hand children’s clothes.

New pop up shop in Fiveways! 8th and 22nd November 10am - 4pm

As I tell my children not to hanker after that shiny iPhone, I am increasingly aware of the example I am setting. We are in a time of recession, money is tight for practically everyone I know, and even for those for whom finance isn’t an issue, there is a growing awareness of the need not to waste. But I do still love shopping! Fiveways has great shops and cafés. Shopping locally gives me a comforting sense of community. Two of our shops sell second hand goods, you can find great women’s clothing at Preloved, and Savery offers a treasure trove of books. My children get through ridiculous amounts of clothing; a dress worn at Christmas no longer fits by the New Year. Shoes that allowed toe-room are pinching a month later. My friend and I have been collecting these no longer wanted items from parents in the area and we have amassed a fantastic amount of quality brands. You may have seen us on a Saturday, sitting outside Sara’s Sweets under an increasingly dripping gazebo, bunting flapping as the autumn winds pick up. Anything we sell we give fifty percent of the price to the original owners. It feels very

satisfying when a coat is bought just as the weather turns, or a pair of tiny Uggs find a new home. People make a bit of extra money from their sales. That sense of community is strengthened again. As the rain has become heavier, and our stock more expansive, we have had to look for a new home, drier and bigger! Sean at the Hop and Vine in Fiveways is letting us use the room he has above his restaurant and from November we will be hosting big sales of used children’s clothing, from tiny newborn outfits to teenage fashions. There will be two a month, with the stock changing as the seasons do. Please come for our first event on the 8th of November between 10 and 4. If you have any clothes that are good makes and in good condition that you would like us to sell for you, then email us at: BuddyandBeehive@gmail.com, or phone Thomasina on 07969 195118. We can pick up from your house. You can also follow us on Twitter @ BuddyandBeehive. Looking forward to meeting you!

LOCAL BUSINESS It has been 6 months since Tilt opened on Preston Drove. Here is an update on how it is going...

Tilt at 134 Preston Drove It’s been a hectic six months finding our feet and welcoming the residents of Fiveways, but at the same time completely enjoyable! We are welcoming new faces all the time and long may this continue. Throughout the summer we had some great tapas events with the popular and much loved Tapas Y Mas, which has fuelled our interest in using the space not only as a coffee shop during the day but as a creative and productive space for events and occasions. Throughout the winter we are channelling our musicloving energies into organising acoustic sessions and bringing other events inside for a more cosy, intimate affair. After many comments about fishmongers and the lack thereof in Fiveways, we are now playing host to the fantastic O’Fishily Healthy every Friday, come rain or shine. Their fish is locally sourced and varies from clams to halibut and fish cakes to crab claws. To maximize on space and fulfil popular requests by our regulars, we are branching out into selling coffee, retail. We are now stocking Monmouth, Grumpy Mule and any other coffee that takes our fancy, alongside coffee equipment such as the Hario V60 - perfect

Christmas gifts for those who have everything. As well as the ‘best coffee in Fiveways’, scrumptious cakes (provided by Sarla at Sticky Fingers), ‘amazing’ toasties which are perfect for the winter months and hot soup to warm your cockles, we also have Wi-Fi and welcome good children and dogs!

9 Last month we featured the Community garden, this month we feature the lady behind its mosaic sign...

Clare Rose Design Hello, my name is Clare Rose. I am a working mosaic and textile artist and teacher. Fiveways is a great area and I have been exhibiting my mosaic and textile work in my open house, “The Pink Birdhouse”, for the past eight years.

You may have fallen upon me wandering around Fiveways. As an extension of this, I run mosaic and craft classes from my large studio at home, which has recently been extended to cope with demand. These are friendly, informal classes where people can express their artistic side in a fun and friendly environment. They are aimed at anyone who fancies trying something crafty. Absolute beginners are most welcome. It’s all about self-expression in a non-competitive environment. Due to many requests, I have started doing children’s parties. I don’t know who has more fun them or me! I find teaching incredibly rewarding and it inspires others to create their own works of art, from designing their own house number to a more intricate piece designed from scratch. Anybody can do this. I find it very sad when a new student comes to me quite shy because they think they are not “arty” - I hate that expression - and gradually they come to life and realise anybody can make something amazing! Fiveways is a great area to live in, with lots of families. It has a village atmosphere and people actually know their neighbours! In my road (Southdown Avenue) there has been a long-standing tradition of having street parties and rolling dinner parties. This, I know, is starting to happen all over Fiveways now. When I got married at the Methodist church at the end of my road, there was an amazing atmosphere and we all decanted to a

marquee in the house and garden, which was semi-populated by local friends from the surrounding streets. I was recently approached by some of the volunteers of the new community gardens at the bottom of Cleveland Road and Stanford Avenue to make a large plaque. If you drive past you will see an example of my work and it was a pleasure to donate this piece of work to such a local and worthy cause. Being a keen gardener myself, it encompassed two of my big passions. I would love to see more of these projects happening in our area. It’s very encouraging to see local communities benefiting from residents participating in such schemes as this, and also down the road in Preston Park, where there is a gardening/growing project. Over the summer, I have spent many happy moments wandering through the wild flower meadow in the park, which was a disused bowling green. These are the places where I gain lots of inspiration for my next artwork projects. We are so lucky to be surrounded by nature in the middle of this city of ours!! If you would like further information about any of the day and evening classes, please visit my website: www. clarerosedesigns.co.uk or email clarerose.designs@ ntlworld.com . Many thanks, Clare

Us by David Nicholls. elcome to the Hodder & Stoughton, hardback. £20.00 bruary edition of veways Gardens

This month’s piece is part review, part diatribe (you have been warned). Let’s begin with the former. I reviewed David Nicholls’ last novel, One Day, when it first appeared, declaring that if there were any justice in the literary world (there isn’t) it would win the Booker.

Well, it didn’t, failing, even, to make the long list but, once the paperback appeared, it took off like a rocket. d, and maybe not tales so much There were in themoney press ofto go round, why not give it nd to plant into? it to move to the next stage. Its failure to make it onto the shortlist, and to ultimately triumph, does the literary establishment (mafia?) absolutely no favours; their innate conservatism and snobbishness is shameful. I’ve taken a long, hard look at each of the Booker contenders and Us is the only one of the bunch I’ve felt any inclination to read from cover to cover. There’s no doubt that the archetypical Booker novel exists: worthy, weighty, solidly constructed, resolutely and avowedly about Something (with a capital ‘S’), the prose style freighted with a pompousness and pretension which frequently makes the novel hard going, but we plough on because what we’re reading is literature, and literature so we’re told, like cod liver oil, is good for us. Us, thank God, is about as unBooker as a Booker nominated novel can be.

Us leaves both the winner and runners-up in the dirt when it comes to those elements which make a novel worth the reading. For my money it says more about what it is to be alive, to feel, to love and survive the vicissitudes of life than anything else on the list. I’m reminded of that statement by Somerset Maugham: To write simply is as difficult as to be good. Nicholls writes ‘simply’ and his novel catches fire, and moves the reader, because of it. I can’t recommend Us highly enough. The other Booker novels I can’t recommend at all.

GARDENS

17 17 Brought to you each month by Fiveways gardening expert Lisa Attwell...

Fiveways Gardens... November 2014

Top job for November is planting tulips (and other spring flowering bulbs if you’ve not got round to it yet). Although most bulbs want a sunny spot, I’ve found that in their first year, they’ll flower heartily in some shade, bringing light and drama in those dark areas of our garden. I’m trying Tulip Spring Green on the shady side of my garden this year, along with Allium unifolium and Cowanii group which will follow them in June. Most of us are familiar with the large purple drumstick alliums, which are fab, but I’m trying these delicate pale pink and white ones in the shade this year. Remember though, to feed all bulbs plenty and, if possible, put them in pots in the sun till their foliage has fully died back before drying and storing them for next year. Otherwise, I very much doubt tulips grown in full shade will emerge again next year. But hey, compared to the price of cut flowers for the house that only last a matter of days, topping up your bulb supply every year is great value.

Make sure that all plants growing in containers and pots can drain. In dry weather, it makes sense to sit them on saucers to help prevent them drying out, but take all the saucers and trays away now, or you’ll drown your plants. Also consider buying (or finding) those little clay ‘feet’ that pots can sit on – this not only aids free draining, but if we get freezing weather, it’ll help prevent pots cracking. Any pots, buckets, bowls etc not in regular use, should be put away or on their sides over winter, so they can’t trap unsuspecting frogs, who are great at finding water, but then sadly can’t escape. Take long forgotten bird feeders down, give them a wash, and re-fill them. Birds come to rely on us more and more – and most of us are cheered by seeing birds strut their stuff in our gardens. Best wishes, Lisa

M: 07957 751 218 lisa@lilybud.co.uk

Another great thing to do now is to plant a bit of hedging. Chosen carefully, they’re less maintenance than a boring fence and will last much longer. Add to that, how much more attractive they are, plus benefits to birds, bees, moths, butterflies etc.. and there’s little reason not to. Plenty of hedging plants are happy in shade and over winter you can buy bare root plants for just a few pence. Do make sure you can irrigate them in the first few summers to get them established, after that, they’ll take care of themselves apart from an occasional trim. If you’re thinking of putting a hedge in your front garden – hoorah for you! Consider putting a small water butt next to the downpipe so you’re not carrying water through the house. A bit of trellis around it is an opportunity for a beautiful, scented climber, and you’re har-

vesting rainwater that would otherwise just go down the drain. It’s not expensive to rig up some pipe and leaky hose to take the overflow straight to the plants too...

• Place the marmalade, black treacle, golden syrup, sugar, butter and ginger in a saucepan with 150ml water and gently heat until all the ingredients are melted; allow to cool slightly. • Beat the marmalade/syrup mixture into the flour and spices, add the oatmeal, beaten eggs and the milk mixture and beat until smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared tin and cook in the centre of the oven for about 40 minutes or until a skewer or knife inserted comes out clean. • Place the pecan nuts on a tray and pop them into the oven for a few minutes until lightly toasted, then tip onto a board and chop. • In a small saucepan gently heat the marmalade and black treacle until melted for the topping. Brush evenly over the top of the hot cake with a pastry brush and sprinkle with the pecan nuts. • Serve warm as a dessert or allow to cool and cut into slices.

As we know Fiveways is full of talented, able people and we love to feature them in The Fiveways Directory! ....

Has the Alexander the Great mystery been solved by a Fiveways author? Fiveways author Lucy Caxton Brown penned much of her latest work, Alexander, A New Theory on an Ancient Legend, while sitting in her Fiveways garden. Her books aim to solve historic and ancient mysteries and can take up to five years to research lously fine sword and shield. Someone had placed a huge ruby on his head indicating that this man was royalty. Egyptians were not usually buried in their armour but we are told that Alexander the Great was. So if this was Alexander, who put him there and why? To find out I have explored ancient legends, documents and medieval paintings. What I found was truly astonishing and leads to what I believe could well be the final resting place of Alexander the Great. Alexander, A New Theory on an Ancient Legend offers up a new hypothesis as to what may have happened to Alexander the Great many centuries after his death.’

So what will the next book be about? ‘Unfortunately I can’t say exactly, because I’ve only just begun the research. You see I am never quite sure where it will all lead, but the story will probably centre around another Egyptian mystery that has yet to be solved.’ Lucy’s latest book certainly has all the ingredients of a mystery thriller. ‘My aim is to involve the reader in analysing the evidence so that we solve the mystery together. ‘In Alexander, A New Theory on an Ancient Legend, we are dealing with a ninth-century break-in to the Great Pyramid by Caliph Al Mamun. He found a statue and inside was a man wearing a gold breastplate that was covered in gems. His weapons lay by his side and included a fabu-

QUIZ QUESTION EIGHT: . Who created the UK TV spoof 007 character Basildon Bond?

SPORTS

27

A local sports club that started in Fiveways and now has venues across the city...

Interested in trying a new sport? How about Handball? Handball is a popular sport on mainland Europe, but before the London 2012 Olympics it was almost unheard of in this country. TV coverage of the sport during the Olympics captured the public’s imagination and soon after the Brighton Handball Club was formed.

In the short time since then it has seen rapid growth and development. Spearheaded by experienced handball player Juan Reig, supported by a handful of volunteers, the club has worked tirelessly to become a recognised community club for the Brighton area. It now prides itself on having a successful men’s team (finishing third in its first season in the South Regional Development League and runner-up at two consecutive National Beach Handball Tournaments). The club has its origins in Brighton’s Fiveways area, having started from a group of enthusiastic sports men and women training in Preston Park with a small football. The club now runs weekly training sessions for men’s seniors (Seahawks), ladies seniors, adult beginners and juniors 11 to 15 years (Geckos) at several indoor venues throughout the Brighton area. Having successfully established the men’s and ladies’ senior teams, the club has now turned its energy to attracting beginners and to

the development of a youth section, Brighton Geckos, looking to secure the long-term legacy of handball in the Brighton area. The sport of handball is a fast-paced, action-packed, physical team sport, with a focus on teamwork and togetherness. A relatively young sport in the UK, it is in fact the second biggest team sport in Europe, and with the rapid growth in membership and interest of Brighton Handball Club and other handball clubs throughout the country, it should soon become a major sport in the UK also. For more information about us, please visit our website www.brightonhandball.com or contact us by email on info@brightonhandball.com. If you do decide to give handball a try, we guarantee a warm welcome.

Restaurants are for meals, a Bistro is a way of life! As the nights draw in and the winds start ripping leaves from the trees, it’s hard to imagine we were ever lounging outside the Hop & Vine with the doors thrown open watching life parade before us as the sun went down. Yet now, with the doors sealed tightly, Fiveways’ own Continental Café seems to have shifted seasons too, moving effortlessly from the frivolous to the comforting. The beers have become deeper, nuttier. The aroma of Coffees and Pastries are the perfect accompaniment to some serious laptop action or flicking through the papers, and the lunches now include sandwiches finely tuned to sustain meetings and chats held in the secluded Upper Salon. Yes, the summer is over and we’re bracing ourselves for the blustery days approaching Christmas, but sheltering in the Hop & Vine makes it all seem that little bit more bearable - every day!

It is not Fiveways but it is on the Ditchling Road...in Ditchling! Well, it’s actually the High Street Ditchling but if you fancy getting out of Fiveways for a bit it is a lovely place to go and very child friendly...

Coffee Shop-Mister Magnolia Mister Magnolia is a lively, family-friendly coffee shop in the centre of Ditchling village. The interior is ‘warm industrial’ with old school furniture and vintage children’s toys for decoration and enjoyment. The menu is small but fresh and carefully chosen to provide tasty options for those with food sensitivities or restricted diets as well as many child-friendly dishes. Pie-Dish dinners are a new addition to the children’s menu with a choice of homemade macaroni cheese, shepherd’s pie, fish pie and vegan bake, packed with hidden vegetables, as well as mini sandwiches and toddler boards all served with crudités. Lunches include homemade soup using fresh seasonal vegetables, sandwiches made with Real Patisserie sourdough or chewy brown bread and packed with fillings such as egg and cress (made with Ditchling’s Mac’s Farm eggs - free range and organic!) as well as toasted sandwiches. The 100% Arabica coffee is Fairtrade and organic and the ‘flat white’ has an excellent reputation. Weekend breakfasts are served 9am - 11.30am using Mac’s Farm eggs and dry-cured Sussex bacon, and are hard to resist! The coffee shop is also licensed so you can enjoy a glass of fizz or some local ale, and on Thursday and Friday evenings freshly made stone baked pizza is on the menu. On Saturday nights, when the venue is not booked for events, cocktails are served. Run by two sisters, Sophie and Natalie, who have six children between them, Mister Magnolia is designed to be a place where you can relax with your children and the designated area for the little ones with colouring, toys, story-telling and even film screenings should ensure you have time to enjoy your refreshments in peace. There is a monthly pop-up shop for a bit of retail therapy and the upstairs function room is used for Pilates, yoga and art classes as well as available for hire for parties. 31 Health tip written by Alison Robertson owner of The Lavender Room, Gorgeous therapies for women.

The wonderful benefits of Pregnancy Massage Having a baby is one of the most precious moments in our lives. Your body goes through some big changes while you are pregnant - tissues soften, your posture alters and your back is under additional strain. All of this can take its toll on you physically and emotionally. It is important to look after yourself during this special time – so a little pampering is what you will most definitely need! Massage from a qualified pregnancy massage practitioner, supports you during these changes. While you are nurturing your baby inside, massage nurtures you from the outside. This is also a time to reflect on busy life styles, and an opportunity to establish a new, healthy outlook – assessing diet, exercise, positive mental attitude and a fundamental, relaxed environment in which your baby can develop safely. Massage during pregnancy can help alleviate many of the associated symptoms – ie: heartburn, constipation, aching legs, sciatica and fatigue. Here are five benefits to having a pregnancy massage. • • • • •

Improves sleep Lowers anxiety Decreases back and leg pain Decreases levels of cortisol hormone. (an indicator of stress) Increases levels of the “feel-good” hormones serotonin and dopamine giving an overall uplift in mood and spirit!

Pregnancy Massage is now available at The Lavender Room. Calming, nurturing, relaxing. Made ultra comfortable with the Comfy Client Cushion System. All the oils and products used here at the Lavender Room, are safe to use in pregnancy. Best Wishes Alison alison@lavenderroomtherapy.co.uk www.lavenderroomtherapy.co.uk Telephone: 07940503001

SONG OF THE MONTH 5

Keith of local lo-fi rockers Les Cactus & the Rumpy Pumpkins offers his monthly musical recommendations...

Les Cactus Recommends...

Child Among the Weeds by Lal & Mike Waterson, 1972

Back in the dark ages before Google and YouTube, discovering new music could be a very slow and financially painful business. Seeking out a copy of something you’d read about or heard once on the radio could result in months or even years of traipsing around back-street record shops, music fairs and flea-markets. Then there was the excitement and trepidation before listening to it back home where the All-Important Question would finally be answered: does it live up to expectations, or is it yet another crushing buy which you’ll have to dutifully listen to a number of times in the fruitless attempt to justify the cash you’ve just shelled out for it? Mercifully to my rescue was a friendship with Colin Davies, who ran the fanzine for Fairport Convention founding-guitarist Richard Thompson and conveniently lived only a couple of streets away. Colin had a magnificent record collection. As an awkward teenager with lank, long hair which my mother said made me look like a spaniel, it was a relief to be welcomed by someone whose enthusiasm for music dissolved any potential boundaries which might otherwise have been present from our age difference. With every visit round his house, he’d generously spend the evening loading me up with records to borrow, enthusing about each album with fond anecdotes about being stoned as a student in the 70s at Kingston Polytechnic, his wife Nita rolling her eyes in the background while getting on with the washing, ironing, cooking, cleaning or something else of actual use. It was through Colin I was first introduced to such delights as The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Eek-A-Mouse, Captain Beefheart, and the short-lived genre of Morris-dance rock fusion which consisted of two records (I only heard one). Best of all was Bright Phoebus by folk siblings Lal & Mike

Waterson, which I remember Colin saying sold a total of 200 copies when first released, of which he’d bought two. I recently heard it described as being the ‘Sgt Pepper of folk music’, which is fitting. However, while The Beatles’ effort is a more pill-popping, headsin-the-stratosphere affair, Bright Phoebus is a record with its feet firmly planted in mud, the smell of dung in its nostrils, and a keen eye fixed on the weather. It’s unique and sounds nothing like their other recordings, let alone anyone else’s. The songs are a peculiar assortment, with chirpy country fair sing-a-longs about rubber bands, magicians and sunshine, alongside magnificently bleak tunes about desperate lives in rural landscapes. The singing is unvarnished. Mike has a warble that sounds like he’s constantly welling up, which is understandable given his sister’s performance – I get tearful just thinking about it. She’s devastating. Her songs and her voice cut like nothing else I know. Lal is the greatest. Listen to the song and make comments online at lescactusmusic.blogspot.co.uk More about Les Cactus & the Rumpy Pumpkins at lescactusmusic.bandcamp.com
