WELCOME TO NOVEMBER IN FIVEWAYS Goodness, November already and the year is flying by! So what has November to offer apart from dropping temperatures and shorter days? Well there is Bonfire Night on the 5th which can be a nice evening out with the family ( but not the dog!). On Sunday 13th we have Remembrance Sunday and if you have any Scottish connection of any kind use St. Andrew’s Day on the 30th as the perfect excuse to have a wee glass of whiskey and to dance a reel! Have a great November! The Fiveways Directory Team info@fivewaysdirectory.co.uk www.fivewaysdirectory.co.uk Cover shot: James O’Sullivan

HOLLINGBURY VALLEY The view from Barnett Road across the valley in 1925. The wall in the foreground is the side wall of 45 Hollingbury Place. Most of this land formed part of Harrington Farm and it was broken up for building plots in the 1920s. Beyond the trees (now covered by Hertford Infant School) are the houses in Hollingdean Terrace. In the far distance are houses in Hollingbury Park Avenue. Most of Stanmer Park Road and the whole of Stanmer Villas had yet to be built. fiveways Meet a local resident...

FIVEWAYS FACE – PAUL BROWN Paul Brown lives in Preston Drove. He runs the cattery at the RSPCA’s Brighton branch in Patcham, and is also a photographer specialising in cat photography. How long have you lived in Fiveways? I’ve lived in Fiveways for about ten years now. Do you have a favourite place in the area to relax? I really like Blakers Park, and I take my friend’s dog there whenever I look after her. It has great views right down to the sea. What challenges do you face at the RSPCA cattery? Dealing with the numbers of cats is the main issue we face: there are so many homeless cats and kittens that need homes. The best thing 9 cat owners can do to help is neuter their pet, and for people who don’t yet own a cat but would like to - come and see us! Do you have a cat of your own? Yes, I have a cat called Bessie. She is about five years old, tabby and white, and came from the RSPCA of course - she came in after being run over by a car.

began photographing the cats at work. My experience of cats helps me to bring out their personality in my photographs.

Tell us more about your photography...

For more information on Paul’s cat photography, see his website: www.projectcatphotography.co.uk

Photography had been a hobby for many years, and I realised that great pictures helped the cats at the RSPCA get great homes so

fiveways The festive season starts very soon...

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL AT THE AVENUE Christmas is always a time of celebration at Stanford Avenue Methodist Church with our annual Christmas Fair 26th November, 11 – 3, starting our festive season. We have 10.30am services throughout Advent and a special Carol Service at 6.30pm on 18th December. Our 6.00pm Service on Christmas Eve is for children and the young at heart, followed at 11.15pm by a Sacramental Service then A Celebration of Christmas at 10.30am on Christmas Day. Everyone is welcome to join us for any of these services.

Imagine this space filled with Christmas trees...

This year the 7th Brighton Scout Group that meet at the church are also planning a new event, a Christmas Tree Festival from 9th – 11th December. We are giving local 15 businesses, organisations or charities an opportunity to publicise their activities by paying £25 to put a tree, either traditional or novel, in the church, then they decorate it in a fun and interesting way to showcase their details. Research can give ideas such as using boxes or books to represent a tree. Knowing how artistic the Fiveways community is we are looking forward to seeing all the ideas put in place. Other Sussex churches have annual festivals but this is an opportunity for local businesses, organisations and charities to advertise their services to local people in a different way. Perhaps you sing or play an instrument; would you like to volunteer to entertain the visitors with a musical item? We would love to hear from you. Entry to the festival will be by donation and funds raised will be shared by the church and the Martlets Hospice in Hove. Refreshments will also be available at reasonable prices too throughout the festival.

Maybe something like this from another Church...

Anyone interested in displaying a tree, it’s not too late, contact Liz Wakeling 01273 430508 or zi7@sky.com . The weekend will end with a service led by the Salvation Army and Songsters at 6.30pm on Sunday 11th December. All are welcome. A collection will be taken during the service for the homeless of Brighton.

All the church’s weekly activities, services, fund-raising events and contact details can be found on our website: www.stanfordavenuemeth.co.uk .

fiveways Our regular book review from Gary Mepsted...

KEEPING ON KEEPING ON

SPEAK, MEMORY BY VLADIMIR NABOKOV PENGUIN MODERN CLASSICS,

BY ALAN BENNETT

PAPERBACK, £9.99 I’m extremely pleased that Penguin have reprinted Nabokov’s glorious autobiography, Speak, Memory. My own ancient copy has seen better days and it’s a treat to be able to finally replace it. This new edition includes the appendix, ‘Chapter sixteen’, a pseudo-review written by the author in 1950. Speak, Memory deals with the years 1903 to 1940, covering Nabokov’s privileged childhood 17 and adolescence, his liberal parents and assorted relatives and family hanger-on, first love, etc; in fact everything you’d expect to find in such a work - but, this being Nabokov, the writing is never less than sublime and is frequently astonishing beautiful. His frankness, his acuity, enables him to present a profusely detailed and evocative portrait of life in St Petersburg and the surrounding area.

FABER & FABER/PROFILE BOOKS, HARDBACK, £25.00 By the time this review appears the new volume of Alan Bennett’s marvellous diaries, Keeping On Keeping On, will be available to purchase. Having had a quick, guilty dip (too much else to read first, alas) I can attest to its dazzling wit and vibrant humanity. Bennett is one of those writers who are able to immediately form an intimate bond with the reader. You can’t help but hear his voice as you read, and feel his presence at your elbow.

Nabokov’s gift for language is without peer, causing you to read certain sentences/passages several times in order to fully suck all the juice out of them, so perfect are they. Some of Nabokov’s finest writing lies between the covers of this account of his younger years. The book captures the essence of Nabokov the man, and the writer, better than any biography I’ve read. Even if you’ve only read, or attempted to read, Lolita, you owe it to yourself to take a look at Speak, Memory. You’re certain to be immediately drawn in.

The book contains much else besides the diaries (2005-2015); there’s the introductions to several of his plays, the film diary for The History Boys, the radio play, Denmark Hill, etc. All-in-all you are treated to 700+ pages of Bennett’s profound and comic take on life and the arts. A more perfect Christmas gift is impossible to imagine.

fiveways How many Snowdogs have you seen?

A chance to discuss an important subject...

ONE MORE MONTH FOR THE SNOWDOGS

DEATH CAFÉ

The Snowdogs by the Sea public art trail has now been in the city for a month. The trail of 44 Snowdogs will raise money for the Martlets Hospice and the Snowdogs will still be around until 27th November. Sparky, the Snowdog at Preston Park, was designed by artist David Sith, and at the Duke of York’s Picturehouse, Preston Circus, you can see The Snowdog, based on the original design of the snowdog in the film “The Snowman and The Snowdog”. At the end of the event each Snowdog will be auctioned, 21 at Sussex County Cricket Ground on 6th December. Before the auction, all the Snowdogs will be brought together for a festive farewell at Brighton Corn Exchange on Sunday 4th December and Monday 5th December.

21st November at 7.30 - 9pm Upstairs at The Hop and Vine Conversations about life and death are rare. And why is that when it is the one thing we all have in common? Two local independent funeral celebrants, Catherine Duffy and Frances Tulley, have got together to try and break through the taboos surrounding death through conversation and open discussion… A subject which affects all our lives (and deaths) but which we avoid talking about and rarely plan for. A survey by the charity Dying Matters revealed that more than 70% of us are uncomfortable talking about death and that less than a third of us have spoken to family members about our end-of-life wishes. Ultimately it can dominate our thinking about the end of our own lives and of those we love, and stops us talking openly about what we hope for and what we want for our own deaths. This is a facilitated opportunity for discussion, that won’t give you the answers but opens up possibilities. It can move us away from fear and ignorance, and allows us to begin looking at a more rational approach to what happens when we, or those close to us, die…

0

Come and join us upstairs at ‘The Hop and Vine’ for what we know will be an interesting, uplifting and fun evening. Tickets will be on sale from www.snowdogsbythesea.co.uk or www.brightondome.org

fiveways Regular fitness advice from local personal trainer Marianne Clark...

THE FIVEWAYS FITNESS CHALLENGE So, Fiveways friends, if you are a regular reader, you will know by now that I enjoy a good challenge. This time, however, I am turning the tables and setting YOU a challenge. The FIVEWAYS FITNESS CHALLENGE. It is not necessarily easy, but very simple. So, if the idea of a fitness challenge on your doorstep appeals, then this is for you. Starting at Fiveways, the challenge is to complete one or more of the five numbered routes on foot, against the clock. Each involves a certain amount of uphill, but you live around Fiveways, so a little bit of hill shouldn’t trouble you too much. To give you an idea of the length and difficulty of each route, I have given you the25 distance and elevation. Maybe start with the shortest and work your way up from there. 1.

Better set aside an hour or two - that’ll be 14.46km with a total elevation of 371m.

Personal Trainer GB Age Group Triathlete

There are some basic rules, of course. You must complete each route entirely under your own steam, walking, running, or even cycling. However, getting the bus is not allowed! The time starts running as soon as you take your first step and stops as soon as you arrive back at your starting point (which must be on a Fiveways junction point). No cheating!! Time yourself or get a friend to time you and record your results. Feel free to post pictures and your results and to challenge your friends and family to give it a go too.

Personal Training & General Fitness Run Training 1-2-1 & Groups Triathlon & Endurance Coaching Open Water Swimming All ages & levels

You could complete all five routes in a single go or do them one at a time over a longer time. Better still, repeat the challenge in a few weeks and see if you are fitter and faster. How much more straightforward could it be?

fiveways The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah McLoughlin...

HOT CHOCOLATE COOKIES Ingredients 112g unsalted butter 375g plain chocolate, chopped 212g light brown sugar, packed 3 large eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 30g unsweetened natural cocoa powder 210g plain flour 1½ teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt about 250g dark chocolate, diced into half-inch27 pieces about 12 large marshmallows, cut in half

Remove baking sheet from oven, add 1 piece of dark chocolate to the centre of each cookie, pushing down very slightly just so it breaks the surface and sinks down.

Place one marshmallow half on the top of each piece of chocolate on all the cookies, pushing down very slightly so the marshmallow adheres.

Return baking sheet to oven and bake for about 5 minutes, or just until marshmallows have puffed; don’t let them brown and don’t overbake. Cookies firm up as they cool. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for about 10 minutes before serving. I let them cool on the baking sheet and don’t use a rack.

Cookies will keep airtight at room temperature for up to 1 week. Alternatively, unbaked cookie dough can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for up to 4 months.

Directions: •

Add the chopped chocolate and butter to a bowl suitable for use in the microwave, cook for a minute and stir, continue cooking and then stirring until the butter and chocolate have completely melted. Stand for 5 minutes to cool slightly.

To a separate large bowl, add the brown sugar, eggs and vanilla. Beat with a handheld electric mixer on medium speed just until blended.

Add the cooled chocolate mixture and beat on medium speed until just combined. Stop and scrape down the sides of the bowl.

Add the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder and salt. Beat until all the ingredients are combined and scrape down the sides of the bowl. Cover the bowl with clingfilm and refrigerate for 2 hours, or until the dough has firmed up. Preheat oven to 160C/150C fan oven.

Line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper. Scoop out approx 2 tablespoons mixture and roll into balls and place them on the baking sheet, spaced at least 3cm apart. Flatten slightly and bake for 10 minutes, or until edges and tops have just set, even if slightly undercooked and glossy in the centre.

fiveways The latest news from Coachwerks in Hollingdean Terrace...

HAIL SEITAN! VEGAN CAFE & RESTAURANT @ COACHWERKS You may remember earlier in the year, there was a spectre of vegan food events looming over Coachwerks. Well, it’s been a busy few months and we are now up and running as a fully functional café and restaurant! Wednesday and Thursday daytimes we are open as a café, serving everything from full breakfasts to burgers, falafel and soup, as well as hot drinks, cake and milkshakes. We like to keep it fresh so there’s always something different. Thursday evening is Rabbit Food, our two-course creative feast, which is a set menu and changes every time. So far we have had everything from Italian, Jamaican 31 and Malaysian to Japanese, Moroccan and Chinese, all vegan and made to order! What should we do next? It’s almost time for winter warmers, right? On Sunday, Bartleby’s Brewery open up the bar, and we bring out the pool table, and get the music playing! We serve a choice of roasts consisting of soya-nut and seitan steak, served with all the trimmings and a choice of gravy! Then on the last Friday of the month we host Eat The Rich! - our three-course extravaganza; it’s on a pay as you feel basis, to make people consider what things are worth. 10% of the takings gets converted into free food and resources for Brighton Love Activists who distribute to the people on the streets of Brighton. If you haven’t been down to Coachwerks recently, you gotta come check it out; loads has changed. As well as a fully vegan café and restaurant, we now have an organic wholefoods shop, Bartleby’s Brewery, a green resource and bike repair centre, artist studios, community dark room, gallery exhibition space, pottery workshops and life drawing classes. We have a log burner, blankets and hot water bottles to keep warm. (It’s gonna get very cold quickly!) We also have a piano and record player in the main space and you’re encouraged to bring vinyl (as long as it’s not Cliff Richard or S Club 7).

fiveways Visit our local venue...

A MUST-VISIT VENUE FOR YOUR NEW TILES AND BATHROOM If you’re revamping your bathroom or need tiles for your kitchen or conservatory floor, look no further: Eurotiles & Bathrooms is the one place that you ought to visit. There is a huge selection of tiles ranging in style from large size porcelain ones which are perfect for a modern bathroom or for kitchen, lounge and even patio floors, through mosaics to more traditional 10 x 10cm for kitchens and marble and stone effects for bathrooms. Wood effect tiles are very popular at the moment as the latest technology means that they are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing and they can be used in areas that are prone to damp where real wood would not be suitable, and the showroom 33 has lots of choice of different styles and colours of wood. It is the exclusive stockist of Ca’ Pietra in Sussex giving you access to some fabulous natural stone tiles. There is also a full range of bathroom products on display including furniture, sanitary ware, showers, taps and accessories such as mirrors and heated towel rails. Ege sanitary ware, which comes with a 10-year warranty, is exclusive to Eurotiles & Bathrooms in the UK and they have other stylish brands such as Burlington and Pura Bathrooms. Most of the range is in stock so you don’t need to plan weeks in advance, you can just come in, choose your prod-

ucts and take them away, or arrange for free local delivery. The Brighton showroom is based on the Freshfields Business Park, near to Screwfix and Benchmarx Kitchens. They offer free parking so you can pull up outside, and knowledgeable, friendly staff to help you decide on the best products for your project. www.eurotilesandbathrooms.com Email: brighton@eurotilesandbathrooms.com; Phone: 01273 605445

fiveways A new exhibition at Brighton Museum...

EXPERIMENTAL MOTION... THE ART OF FILM INNOVATION A new display at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery tells the story of experimental film-making in Brighton & Hove, from 1896 to the present day. Unknown to many, both Brighton and Hove have played a rich and important part in international film history. Early film-making pioneers include George Albert Smith and James Williamson, who became known as the Brighton School and worked here at the turn of the 20th century, while modern and contemporary filmmakers and moving image artists - like Jeff Keen, Ben Wheatley and Ben Rivers - have cemented the city’s status35 as a hotbed of experimental film. Experimental Motion: the art of film innovation explores Brighton & Hove’s success as a place for experimental film-making, and its significance nationally and internationally. Suzie Plumb, Royal Pavilion & Museums (RPM)’s Curator of Film, Media and Toys, said: “Over the past 120 years this city has seen highly influential work produced by its filmmakers. These experimental films have moved the language of cinema and art forward internationally, yet

A Kiss in the Tunnel by GA Smith, 1899, © BFI National Archive

the story is little known. Through looking at filmmaking techniques, such as editing, visual trickery and illusion, Experimental Motion will highlight the impact of these films on the development of the moving image. We’ll exhibit objects from as long ago as 1896 from the city’s extensive Film & Media collections, alongside films by the Brighton School, work by modern and contemporary filmmakers and objects and work by moving image artists.” Highlights of Experimental Motion will include: • •

Rare objects from the history of film-making in Brighton & Hove, such as ground-breaking cameras made in the city. Film by key avant-garde director Jeff Keen (19232012), who was based in Brighton and began to make an impact with Dada-influenced work in the 1950s. A digital exploration of work by feature filmmakers such as Brighton resident Ben Wheatley, who experiment with editing technique, equipment and simultaneous multi-platform release. Work by Ben Rivers, a leading contemporary artist-filmmaker who co-founded the Brighton Cinematheque in 1996 - examples of whose work have recently been acquired by the city with assistance from the Contemporary Art Society.

fiveways Hi, I am Nelson, a four-legged Fiveways resident. I am a black Miniature Schnauzer puppy, born in April...

NELSON’S COLUMN OH NO! ITS FIREWORKS NIGHT AGAIN... I consider myself quite a brave pup - chasing cats and squirrels, sniffing bigger dogs’ bottoms and not barking too much at umbrellas - but there is one thing that I hate…fireworks. It’s that time of year again. Without any warning, whizzes and bangs, loud noises and bright flashes. You never know when it is going to happen and it makes me very nervous and distressed. My human took me to the local pet shop, The Pet Shed, to see what they suggested. Hannah said: “Bonfire Night and the days running up to it and afterwards are a very stressful time for most pets. Make sure your pet has somewhere safe to hide, take dog walks early and keep pets secure indoors, close windows and curtains and put on music. And don’t forget any small animals, such as rabbits and guinea pigs, outside. Soundproof hutches and provide more bedding to burrow in.” She also said that there are a number of natural calming remedies that work very well at this time of year. Pet Remedy is a clinically proven blend of essential oils

(including valerian) that helps the brain send calming messages when the body is stressed. It comes as a plug-in and spray. Dorwest Herbs also have Scullcap and Valerian tablets, and Valerian Compound that can be given orally, that work well. These can also be used to treat anxiety and travel sickness. I am not sure about taking medicines, but as these are both natural we were told there are no side effects. Here’s hoping for a calmer November and I will try not to forget to save some of these for New Year’s Eve! Thanks for reading! fiveways Welcome to the November edition of Fiveways Gardens...

IN THE GARDEN – NOVEMBER 2016 Over the past few weeks, there’s a question that has cropped up half a dozen or so times. “Is this a good time of year to do the garden?”Locally to us, the answer is a resounding “yes”. So long as heavy frosts for days at a time aren’t forecast – unlikely, I think – there’s not a lot that can’t be done at the moment. Sad-looking lawns still seems to be a criticism many people have of their own gardens. Apart from the condition of the lawn – weed content, moss, bare patches etc, the main problem is lack of definition between lawn and beds. Grass spreads by creeping, so putting a barrier, or decorative edge, around it will provide that definition all year. There are some discreet and stylish metal edges available, or for a more traditional look, consider timber or brick. Turning our attention43 back to the condition of the lawn itself, a bit of TLC now is a good idea. A quick rake over to get out the dead grass; spike it all over with a fork and then brush in some top dressing. They’ve got plenty up at the garden centre at the racecourse and a few bags are all you need. This is also a good way of tackling small dips in the lawn, and will help with any re-seeding. Autumn/winter is a good time for renovating or renewing tired or damaged shrubs, trees and perennials. We tend to forget that, as living things, plants have a limited life span too. Many so-called problem plants that people point out to me in their gardens are simply plants that are past their best or are in the wrong place. A sunny border 10 years ago when planted might now be quite dark with large shrubs and trees casting lots of shade. Maybe it’s time to re-think the planting? With deciduous plants shedding their leaves we have access to walls, fences and sheds that might need maintaining, painting or even replacing. There’s a wide range of trellis, fencing and storage solutions that are now available, in all sorts of different materials and designs.

should be put on their sides over winter, so they can’t trap unsuspecting frogs, who are great at finding water, but then sadly can’t escape. Best wishes, Lisa

Finally a reminder to check bonfires for wildlife, like hibernating hedgehogs, frogs and toads, before lighting them. Any pots, buckets, bowls etc not in regular use
