Also this month, we hear from Stanford Avenue Methodist Church, who have a new minister, and we have a report on the first ever Crafty Dog Festival in aid of local charity Say Aphasia, which took place recently in Preston Park. The Friends of Blakers Park bring us their news in a four-page pull-out and we have an article on Stanford Avenue Community Garden.

fiveways Meet the owners of one of Fiveways’ most popular Artists Open Houses...
FIVEWAYS FACES... DAN MACKEY & ADAM JOHNSON Dan Mackey, Adam Johnson and Egg the pug live and work at 11 Rugby Road, where they create and sell unique homeware, gifts and stationery. They will be opening their home on weekends between 23rd November and 8th December as part of the Christmas Artists Open Houses festival. Their house has been voted three times as one of the top three Best Houses. How long have you lived in Fiveways? We have lived on Rugby Road for 13 years now. A big deciding factor on buying in Fiveways was the history of the Artists Open Houses! Over the years our Open House has increased in size and we can open up the garden for people to explore. What can we expect to find in your Christmas Open House this year? This Christmas we’re trying a new layout of ALL 7 rooms downstairs filled with festive gifts and goodies. We have a dozen guest artists who help us create a really full, diverse display. We have never opened the garden during Christmas but we always love how it looks all lit up during darker days - so visitors can now find sculpture, wreaths and garden decorations outside and we will make it more festive than ever! We really love an over-the-top Christmas, so will still have a ridiculous amount of trees and a candy themed charity kitchen. What’s your most popular product? The product we’ve made for the longest time unchanged is a ceramic tea light holder we call a Crunkle. Each is hand pinched from porcelain and perforated so the light shines through. Inspired by coral and seed forms, they are all individual and unique.

Can we buy from you online? Yes we always keep our website 11 RugbyRoad updated and all our usual makes and special Christmas items will be on there. People local to Fiveways can use the code COLLECT to take off postage and pick up in person. What do you like to do to relax? We do find it hard to relax while being freelance, preferring to watch a film at home so we can make things while it’s on rather than be at the cinema! Egg the pug is a good excuse to get out for a walk; going down to the beach or venturing to a forest is always nice. For more information, visit 11rugbyroad.com or 11 Rugby Road on Facebook.

A NEW TYPE OF DINER
We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.
Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.
Everything we have is completely free of gluten. That's right, everything. Even our house made sourdough, sweet bakes and our buttermilk pancakes. Our aim is excellence as standard. We make super food for super people.

In Roman mythology, who was the god of the Sun?
fiveways Stanford Avenue Methodist Church have greeted their new minister...
NEW MINISTER AT STANFORD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH On 8th September at a special service for all the local Methodist churches, everyone was waiting expectantly to hear from our new minister Rev Dan Woodhouse. Originally from Nottingham, Dan claims to have been reluctant to enter the ministry but felt called to bring people together. So with this as his central idea he became a minister five years ago in Leeds. In a world that encourages isolation which is a breeding ground for loneliness, depression, anxiety, materialism and more, Dan is hoping to build relationships and friendships with those in the church and the wider community. We share Dan with Patcham Methodist Church and Sussex University so he can’t be with us every week but he has visited most of the groups to meet the members, attended the fundraising events and preached three services. His next service is 17th November at 10.30am and everyone is welcome. Other special services are the All Saints Day Service, 1st November at 7.30pm, when we will remember loved ones who are no longer with us and Remembrance Sunday Service, 10th November at 10.30am.
Information on all the church’s activities can be found on our website: www.stanfordavenuemeth.co.uk.

fiveways News from the council...
PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON GRAFFITI AND TAGGING Brighton & Hove City Council have launched a public consultation on their proposals to tackle graffiti and tagging. At present the council are only responsible for removing graffiti and tagging from their own buildings and other equipment they own like bins, lamp posts and playpark equipment. They are not responsible for removing anything on private property or land, including graffiti on company buildings or belongings, unless it’s offensive. Councillor Anne Pissaridou, chair of the council’s Environment, Transport & Sustainability committee, 11 is urging people to complete the consultation. She also pledged and acknowledged that as part of the war on graffiti the council needs to clean up its own buildings and equipment. She said: “Some of the consultation is quite controversial as we’re asking people if they think businesses, private homeowners and landlords should remove graffiti from their buildings or pay the council to do so. But with the vast majority of graffiti and tagging on private property that we’re not responsible for, we need people’s views on tackling this growing and unsightly problem.”
The consultation is open until 15 December and takes around 10 minutes to complete. Councillor Pissaridou added: “We’re determined to stop graffiti and tagging in the city, so agreeing a majority way forward is extremely important. Graffiti is a terrible blight on our city and it must be erased for good.” The feedback will be considered and a final approach presented to a future meeting of the council’s Environment, Transport & Sustainability committee. You can find the consultation at: https://consultations. brighton-hove.gov.uk/rubbish-recycling-and-streets/ graffiti-removal-enforcement-consultation/

fiveways A local group who organise talks and outings...
BRIGHTON AND HOVE NATIONAL TRUST ASSOCIATION We are a group of local people of all ages, who love our beautiful countryside and appreciate what the National Trust does to protect it; our main aim is to raise money for the NT and enjoy ourselves at the same time. National Trust’s Nymans Garden
We meet once every two weeks during the autumn and spring at the Training Room, Withdean Stadium, where there is ample parking, for talks on a wide range of subjects including: The Story of English Freedom, A Musical Extravaganza, 14 British Wine, Press Photography and many other subjects. We visit a range of nearby NT properties and other places of interest on outings during the summer and we have an Autumn Coffee Morning, a New Year Lunch, a Spring Lunch and a Christmas Tea. We have a five-day coach holiday each year, visiting places of general interest and NT properties all around the UK. (The picture is NT Nymans Gardens with its lovely flower beds.)
QUIZ QUESTION FIVE:
If you would like more information on how to join us (you don’t have to be a NT member to join), please call our membership secretary on 01273 562404 or just ring to find out where and when we next meet and come for a taster. We would love to see you.

fiveways A very successful local project...
AWARD-WINNING COMMUNITY GARDEN CONTINUES TO THRIVE What a pleasant surprise to see the Stanford and Cleveland Community Garden featured on the cover of September’s Fiveways Directory. As you walk down Stanford Avenue and come to the intersection with Cleveland Road you will come across the last of the majestic and eye-catching sunflowers that are providing so much pleasure as the summer moves stealthily into autumn. For six years this garden has provided a lot of enjoyment for local residents and passersby alike, with its striking displays of flowers, rich crops of fruit and vegetables and abundance of herbs. Following the successful petitioning of Brighton & Hove City Council in 2012 to narrow the road at the junction of Stanford Road and Cleveland Road, a large area of desolate tarmac was created which had potential. The junction had originally been a wide coach-turning circle, but became a safety risk as pedestrian and road traffic increased. The Council invited local residents to submit ideas about what to do with the space, and so the idea of creating a community garden evolved. Reclaiming the space has been a labour of love for a small group of volunteers. The Council provided the original structure of a wooden raised bed which was then redesigned to include two internal raised beds and paths. These beds are used mainly for vegetables planted on a crop rotation basis. There is also a triangulated area which sports a lovely maple tree, two olive trees and perennial planting. This year we have also built raised beds on the space on the other side of the road which have been planted with drought resistant perennials, being mindful of the changes in climate. We also planted a small area with wildflowers. Naturally there are many challenges to maintaining this space which is so appreciated by the community. Ongoing costs are of course an issue. Historically we received
a start-up grant from the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership. Winning the Cultivation Street Competition in 2018 and this year a grant from the Council Communities Fund helped contribute to our finances. We have an annual Harvest Lunch at the local church and an annual Plant Sale to help pay for essentials. Water is another big consideration. We are fortunate the adjacent Montessori school allows us to have a water butt running from their school roof and to fill it during dry periods, of which there are an increasing number. And this year we have had a lot of unwanted digging activity from local foxes. We have found newly planted beds dug up on a number of occasions, and large holes in the bark paths. As we are an organic garden, this behaviour is a mystery and no deterrent has seemed to persuade them from creating havoc! But the rewards are many. We have won medals again this year for the South and South East In Bloom ‘Our Community’ – Gold - and ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ – Outstanding - and we achieved gold medals in the ‘Best Community Garden’ and ‘Best Community Food Growing Project’ categories in the Brighton and Hove City in Bloom competition which are a testimony to all the work that has gone into maintaining this space. But more important is the small haven that has been created and maintained for bees and butterflies and people passing by can help themselves to some of the produce whilst leaving some for others, or simply enjoy the bright and verdant space and seasonal changes. We would welcome more volunteers; we meet on a Thursday morning, and any suggestions about a successful fox deterrent would be much appreciated! If you would like more information on our garden, please just join us on any Thursday morning or contact Debbie Pryer on debpryer@hotmail.co.uk

It has 158 trees of around 80 different species, ranging from the historic Field Elm and Pine trees planted in Victorian times, to the rare and distinctive Golden Elm and Tulip trees near the playground.
TrEE survey

We have recently completed a tree survey in the park which indicates the opportunity to plant 50 new trees – to replenish the ageing tree population whilst addressing ecological and climate change challenges.
Time for coMMunity action
Due to drastic cuts to park resources in the city, it is down to us as a community to take action, and since we launched our tree project in June community feedback and support has been amazing.
aNNual fundraising & planting cycle
With your help we will be fundraising annually to plant up to 10 trees each December until 2025, working with the Park Rangers. We have already raised £1500 towards this year’s December planting, meaning we can plant 5 trees. Let’s make it 10 trees in 2019!!!

Trees are the lungs of our community, giving us Climate change and the natural ageing of the trees, means it is vital that we plant more trees as well as maintain their number and diversity. We need to prepare our park for the future by :
1. Adapting for climate change
Interplanting helps create a nursery stock which protects the older trees from wind damage and creates ecological corridors to stimulate biodiversity.
• Kitchens & Bathrooms 2. Managing suCCeSSional plaNNing Planting younger trees to transition the park for when the mature trees reach the natural end of their lives.
• Plumbing & Carpentry • Plastering &and Tiling 3. increasing biodiversity weLLbeing By planting a greater variety of trees, we can • Painting & Decorating greatly increase the biodiversity of Blakers Park, encouraging more wildlife, seasonal interest and • Refurbishments pollutants and dust for cleaner air.

“ There’s a magic machine that takes carbon out of the atmosphere, costs very little, and builds itself. It’s called...a tree.” This great little quote is from George Monbiot in [view on Youtube, search ‘greta george’]. use nature to tackle the climate crisis by simply planting trees. Billions of them, across the world. This is by far the biggest and cheapest way to tackle the climate crisis, by absorbing and storing the carbon dioxide emissions that are driving global heating. Tree planting has the mind-blowing potential to remove two-thirds of all the emissions that have been pumped into the atmosphere by human activities, without encroaching on crop land or urban areas. But currently natural climate solutions only receive 2% of emission-cutting funding. We believe it’s time for communities like ours to step up and do something that counts, now. 50p. £5. £500. The story behind Sally’s tree: This tree is in memory of my Mum and Dad. When I was small my Dad would quote the lines of a poem “I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree” and my Mum and I loved to hear those same lines sung by Mahalia Jackson. It is wonderful to recall these memories whenever I pass by. 20

fiveways Our regular book review from Gary Mepsted...
LOVE STORIES... I’ve been handing out a great many book recommendations of late and, in that spirit, I thought I’d offer up my top three love stories of the not wholly happy ending variety. Warning: there’ll be no ‘Reader I married him’ denouements here. Let’s kick off with Graham Greene’s sublime “The End of the Affair”, a novel which has appeared in my articles/reviews before. Published in 1951, this account of an adulterous affair in war-time London between 23 a novelist, Maurice Bendrix, and a civil servant’s wife, Sarah Miles, gives the reader the definite A-Z of what it’s like to love and lose someone. Greene never shies away from those masochistic impulses which are present in all human sexual relationships. Bendrix and Sarah are deeply flawed but their humanity and desire for each other will likely spark an uncomfortable recognition in the reader of their own behaviour when it comes to loving another.
I’ve described this book to my writing students as ‘The only novel you need to read’. Vikram Seth’s An Equal Music (1999) is a gorgeous Beethovenian quartet of a book. Violinist Michael Holme, something of a Bendrix figure, can’t forget his love for Julia, a pianist he met as a student in Vienna. The pair meet again many years later and embark upon a secret affair. Julia is now married and a mother. The many musical references and the exquisite musicality of the prose add to the enormous pleasure of reading this sumptuous if, ultimately tragic, story. Those without knowledge of classical music should on no account be put off. Michael and Julia’s narrative will propel you through the novel’s pages. The ending is pitch perfect. William Nicholson is perhaps best known as a screenwriter (Gladiator, Shadowlands), but he’s no slouch as novelist either. The Trial of True Love (2005) is, for me, the best of his books and the happiest story is this selection. A chance meeting on a bridge between Bron and the mysterious, married Flora causes Bron to pursue her across Europe. Bron’s ambition to understand the magic of love at first sight, and his exhaustive research into the subject through art and literature, bring him no closer to winning Flora’s heart. The novel’s humour, its unashamed quirkiness, sit beautifully with its more allusive and philosophical elements. Read in the order given here, The Trial of True Love is the perfect palette cleanser after the more astringent Greene and Seth. Gary Mepsted fiveways directory November 2019

fiveways Mike Doodson has been researching the history of our local bakery...
GRIESBACH’S BAKERY AT 277 DITCHLING ROAD... The October edition of The Fiveways Directory had a photo on the front from 1959.
I’d assumed that Charles’ surname was originally German, and so it turned out to be. His grandfather, Henry Griesbach was born in 1865 in the town of Sobernheim, just south west of Frankfurt in Germany. Henry was naturalised in December 1908, by which time he was married to Mary (b.1868) and they had eight children. They lived at 26 Thorburn Square, Bermondsey, in south London – Thorburn Square still exists but all the Victorian buildings were replaced in the 1960s with modern flats. On his naturalisation papers Henry was described as being a “Baker and confectioner”. On the 1911 census the oldest child Fritz (b.1889, also called Frederick) was recorded as a “pastry cook”, as was a younger son Charles (b.1893), so baking and pastry ran in the family. The shop near Fiveways bore the surname of this son Charles Griesbach (born in 1893 in Bermondsey), whose wife was Lily White Ladysmith Croom (born in Edmonton, Middlesex, in 1899) – they married in 1937 in Wandsworth. Charles and Lily had no children. After Charles’ death in Brighton in 1963, Lily left Brighton to live in Enfield with her sister Amy Croom. Lily died in 1986 in Enfield.

It’s always interesting to see how local shops have changed, but this one was particularly intriguing, as the bakery on the corner of Ditchling Road and Sandgate Road was not Raven’s – which has been there as long as I can remember – but Griesbach’s. And the surname Griesbach is unusual to say the least. Curiosity aroused off I went to find out more…
From the Brighton local Kelly’s directories (check out the fascinating site My House My Street at http://www. mhms.org.uk) the name over the door of 277 Ditchling Road was Griesbach from at least 1954 until 1966 (a few years after his death). In 1951 the bakery was occupied by S. Standingford. By 1968 the building was occupied by J. Lockwood, baker, and by 1969 D. W. Raven – the current name is Raven’s Bakery. This indicates that the extremely popular (and rightly so) Raven’s bakery is 50 years old this year! Something to be celebrated by all Fiveways residents and businesses. (Just to add to the complication of identifying Charles Griesbach, his brother Fritz’s son was also called Charles Griesbach, born in 1918, died in Fortrose, Ross-shire, Scotland, in 2008.) - all those things that we take for granted. They have to relearn it because it damages that part of their brain, the communication part. Some people recover quite well, some people don’t. So some people really struggle to say any words, but some people can put a conversation together. We thought, what better way to raise awareness and money for Say Aphasia than to get all the dog owners and dog lovers together and have fun for the day.” The day included: a fun dog show, agility classes and other have-a-go activities, stalls with local homemade dog treats and handmade dog accessories, chances to win great prizes, and much more. There was a very interesting dog sport called flyball in which a team of four dogs races against another team of four dogs. Darren Rowden of Brighton Flyball explained that for the beginner dogs there are nets down the side of the jumps so that they can’t run off. For the intermediate and fast dogs there is no netting on the sides and it is a lot faster. He said: “It is really good to watch.” Yajie Dong
