Horrible to have to admit, but I think it is now indisputable that summer has indeed passed and that we are now in autumn. Autumn isn’t so bad however...the colours are amazing and you can’t beat those fresh autumnal mornings. So what have we for you this month? We have the story of a Fiveways resident who has over 350,000 followers – see page 5, as well as the promised article about the awardwinning community garden on Stanford Avenue. We also have a food review of the new Hop and Vine restaurant, along with all the regular features.
Our cover this month is taken in Havelock Road and is proof that Fiveways loves to support its local businesses!! Brought to you each month by Fiveways gardening expert Lisa Attwell...
Benford Co Welcome to&the Butchers February edition of Fiveways Gardens
With the increasing interest in growing our own food, and maybe not so much money to go round, why not give it a go this year? But what if you have no spare ground to plant into? Well, how about some carefully chosen nice big containers in your front garden. Or, even better, get rid of some of that tired looking concrete or paving slabs and plant straight into the ground. I’m often asked what’s easy and suitable for growing in limited space. Top of my list are onion, beetroot, carrot and a lovely waxy salad potato, such as Charlottes. Nip out to your local garden centre or chat up friends that have an allotment, who’ll be able to get you a dozen or so seed potatoes from the allotment shop. Growing potatoes is simplicity itself.
them. In about late June/July, you’ll find a lovely crop of salad potatoes that you can just dig up as and when you want them. Easy, huh? If the whole crop’s dug up by the end of July, why not use the space to grow a range of gorgeous late summer flowers – Rudbeckias, verbenas, asters, grasses etc, that will keep you smiling through the rest of summer and well into autumn.
1. buy seed potatoes ASAP. 2. put them in a dark cold place (the loft works well for me) for a few weeks to “chit” or sprout. 3. push these potatoes into the ground where you want them to grow and cover with about 3-4 inches or 10cm of your garden soil. 4. relax and go and do some other things for a month or two. 5. when Carpentry Ltd. there’s lots ofC.P. green leafy growth&toJoinery about 8-12 inches, C & G of London Institute. put another few inches of garden soil (or the bought stuff) onto the growing potato plants. You don’t want to completely cover them up, but this “earthing up” process means you won’t get green bits on your spuds and you’ll get a bigger crop. Do this several times over the early summer months. Keep the plants well watered once there’s plenty of foliage. You don’t need to feed
I was at a meeting recently with the council Parks department in Preston Park and I’m chuffed to report that there’s a strong commitment to planting some banks of wild flowers in the park and some native shrubs and trees. Both of these measures are great news for us and local wildlife.

Award winning Stanford and Cleveland Community Garden How many of you dream you had the time or space to grow your own organic vegetables, but know that in reality you’ll continue eating supermarket produce because life is too busy to manage your own allotment? Well, here’s some good news: four Stanford Avenue residents have made it possible for you to grow your own, with the creation of the Stanford & Cleveland Community Garden, located at the bottom of Cleveland Road in front of the Montessori school. Perhaps you’ve walked past but dared not venture inside, assuming it was private? Actually, it’s for us all - a project by the people, for the people. Inspired by the larger community garden movement across the city, ours was founded with the idea that local people could put as much time into the garden as they wanted, without necessarily sustaining that commitment. With a “take what you want but leave some for others” attitude, the founders encourage people to dig up the fruits of the community’s labour, without feeling obliged to plant their own (but they would welcome new recruits any time). Made possible thanks to the council-approved narrowing of Cleveland Road and the receipt of a funding grant, the raised bed and external wall were built by Brighton Up Your Garden, with compost provided by the Brighton & Hove Composting Co-operative. Volunteers Pat Dauncey, Debbie Pryer, Alan Wares and Lynn Mackenzie combined

their skills and devoted their time to ensure the garden became productive, decorative and inviting. Using their combined gardening expertise, a rough planting plan was drawn up; small-scale rotation would help avoid disease and give them an ample first harvest. To date, the garden has yielded an impressive A-Z of seasonal organic fruits and vegetables, many of which are the result of plant and seed donations from other community gardens and allotments.
a fact the volunteers are rightly proud of. If you haven’t already, duck your head beneath the pretty, growing willow arch and check out what’s ready for digging up - you won’t go home empty-handed, and you might even be tempted to get planting yourself.
The garden has received much positive feedback from within our community, and more recently has been attracting some wider attention: on 13th September it was the site of a “Cut and Cook” event, during which professional chef Anna Swartz swiped whatever was ripe and cooked it on a mobile stove for a gathered audience, in celebration of the harvest. The garden also entered and won the Community Garden category of this year’s Brighton & Hove City in Bloom competition -

BOOK REVIEW
15
Our regular book review with BBC book reviewer Gary Mepsted only this month it isn’t a review it is an article!.....
Oh, you’re a writer. How lucky you are! An abrupt change of plan this month. I was halfway through a review of a new novel from one of our major novelists (a gentlemen never tells!) when I realised I had very little to say about it that was positive. My column is based upon recommendation rather than warning and so I’ve changed tack, hopefully with my lovely editor’s blessing. Last night after a performance of one of my plays, a bunch of us were sitting around in the bar (me, soaking up praise) when, inevitably, the question of writing came up. Those in the group who weren’t writers, filmmakers, etc, declared as one voice that it must be wonderful to be a writer and how envious they were of people like me and my fellow scribes. Now, it’s certainly nice to be envied, but in this particular case the envy was most definitely misplaced. For anyone out there who fancies themselves as a writer (and to judge by those people I meet who long to see themselves thus that’s a very large number of people indeed), let me tell you bluntly that it’s not lovely being a writer. It’s the antithesis of lovely. No, I wouldn’t want to do anything else, but writing is soul-crushingly, brainrottingly hard. You live with fear and doubt on a daily basis; your moods fluctuate wildly from elation to despair. You toil away year in, year out with little hope of success or reward. Like raising a child, writing demands one hundred percent of your energy one hundred percent of the time. Those nearest and dearest to you who don’t write will frequently find their tolerance stretched to breaking point. They, poor creatures, exist in an environment of stoicism and bewilderment as they watch the person they love weeping and wailing over their laptop or laughing hysterically (and not necessarily in a good way) at something they’ve written. Writers really should only co-habit with other writers, and I’m fortunate indeed that my (significantly) better half is herself a writer, someone who understands how all-consuming and selfdestructive generating words on a screen can be. So, while I understand that the popular idea of the
writer as an individual who can set their own rules, who answers to no one but their muse, is an attractive one, the reality is depressingly different. It’s a truism that writers write because they don’t have a choice - and I’m not just talking about deadlines and contractual obligations here. They write, because as the writer Hugh Leonard put it, they are sick. But unlike any other sick person, if there were a drug which would cure them they would never take it. Try, please, and remember this the next time you’re in a writer’s company. Don’t tell them how lucky they are. They might look at you as though you’re mad. Thank you. I now HAVE to go back to the script I’m working on.

GARDENS
17 17
Brought to you each month by Fiveways gardening expert Lisa Attwell...
Fiveways Gardens... October 2014 In the veg garden, lift and divide rhubarb, if it’s getting a bit big for the space. Dig up the last of the main crop potatoes, carrots, cabbages and beans and store well. If, like me, you’ve a glut of green tomatoes, either fry them up in some olive oil and a sprinkling of brown sugar and have them on toast for a hearty breakfast, or look up a green tomato chutney recipe and give it a go. This is a good time of year to take a long, hard look at your garden and ponder on what’s worked well and what hasn’t. In my experience, plants don’t tend to read the same books as us. What I mean is, that no matter how well we might research a plant in terms of right plant right place etc, there is no guarantee that any given plant will be happy in a particular spot, or grow in quite the way we’d hoped. The simple fact is, that plants, as living things, are susceptible to all sorts of foes, be they pests, diseases, too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry… It’s also the case that some plants from the same line at the same nursery are tougher and frankly better than others. It’s nature, it’s life. And it’s exactly why every year we’ll likely need to top up our plant borders and pots. If needing a bit of inspiration, why not take a trip out to one of the fantastic gardens near us. Highdown Gardens in Worthing is free (although happy for donations towards upkeep). It’s been created on the same chalky soil many of us are familiar with, so if it’s growing there, chances are, it’ll be okay in your garden. Alternatively, Sheffield Park, Nymans, Borde Hill and Wakehurst are all well worth a visit, and at this time of year, we’ll hopefully get the extra treat of lots of gorgeous autumn colour.
• Regularly rake leaves off lawns and consider some autumn lawn TLC – autumn feed, rake, aerate, scarify and top dress to try to sort out some of those bumps and dips. • It’s a good time to plant just about everything – unless you’re waiting for bare-root stock in winter. • Get any hedges clipped now or leave them till next spring. Best wishes Lisa
M: 07957 751 218 lisa@lilybud.co.uk
If you haven’t already, get ordering your bulbs. The more I’ve gardened, the more I come to appreciate these amazing plants. Winter, especially the past few, can seem to drag on and on, and the emergence of the first green leaves and flower stems in late winter and early spring really does cheer me up.

Here is a local Fiveways students success story....
It is all so Tres easy Fiveways Sol Sol Langan-Clark has joined only a handful of early entry students (Year 8, aged 12) in the UK to achieve an A* grade in his GCSE which he took earlier this year at Varndean School. Sol, now 13, of Ditchling Road, Fiveways, has been learning French since he was seven, when his parents opened a holiday business near La Rochelle in SouthWest France. With the support of the language department at Varndean, he entered his French GCSE despite there being a 40% fall in early entry students nationally. As results fell nationally, Sol managed to achieve the A* grade which was achieved by just 6.7% of students. He now hopes to use his language skills to work with the many French students and tourists who visit the city each year. If you would like any more info, please let me know: Paul Clark and Michelle Langan 07788 526789.

ROYAL PAVILION
21
The latest in the series of articles written for us featuring some of the treasures of the Royal Pavilion...
A micro-masterpiece...by Caan Walls Legend has it that, when the Royal Pavilion was purchased from the Royal Household by the Brighton Corporation in 1850, workmen who were exploring the cellars found many intriguing articles including hundreds of empty wine bottles, dusty tomes…and a large, square stone, face down on the floor. As it was turned, to the workmen’s surprise, the underside revealed a head and shoulders portrait of the Prince Regent dressed in robes of the Garter. Upon closer inspection the portrait turned out not to be oil on canvas as first thought but rather a micro-mosaic formed of incredible detail and skill. In 1819 Pope Pius VII requested from Sir Thomas Lawrence a replica of the portrait of the Prince Regent which Lawrence had painted of him and exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1818. Lawrence made several copies of his standing portrait of the Prince Regent, one of which hangs in the main entrance of the Royal Pavilion. Lawrence duly sent a replica to Rome which now hangs in the Vatican Galleries. Pius VII ordered the head and shoulders of the replica to be copied in marble mosaic in the Vatican workshops by Domenico Moglia

with the intention of presenting it as a gift to the Prince Regent. Born in 1780 in Cremona, Domenico Moglia was a designer, sculptor and woodcarver in the Vatican workshops. He later became a professor of design and was responsible for the ornament of the Arco della Pace in Milan. Pius VII died in 1823 and Moglia, as shown by the signature and date, didn’t complete the mosaic until 1829. The following year George IV also died and the portrait made its way to England only after the King’s death. It is said to have been sold to an anonymous buyer for £4,000. Whatever the true early history, we know from records kept in the Royal Pavilion archives that the mosaic was purchased by the Brighton Corporation from a Dr Willington in June 1888 at the cost of £150, who had received it as a gift from one of his patients, who we can assume was the original anonymous buyer. Whilst the early history of the mosaic is intriguing, most fascinating is the portrait itself which is formed out of half a million marble and semi-precious stones such as cornelians, lapis lazuli, beryl and corals for drapery and skin, and other rare stones for the jewels of the Order of the Garter. Each piece of stone is no more than a quarter of an inch long and an eighth of an inch wide. The eyes, being the centre-piece of this masterwork, contain hundreds of the tiniest pieces imaginable. It is considered by connoisseurs to be one of the finest Vatican mosaics in the world and is a masterly example of the use of stones to imitate paint. It took seven years to make and is in near perfect condition with no stone being lost. The original cost of the mosaic in 1819 is estimated to be £20,000, it is framed in iron-gilt and weighs around half a ton. The micro-mosaic is one of the most beautiful objects in the collections here at the Royal Pavilion, being a favourite of designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen among others. The only shame in this story is that the Prince Regent, who was such a patron of the arts and lover of beautiful and unique objects, did not get to see the finished portrait before his death. The portrait is currently on display in the Yellow Ante Room of the Royal Pavilion SEE IT FOR FREE AS A MEMBER! Call 01273 295898 to join.

FOOD REVIEW
27
Rosie our roving reporter took a trip to the Hop and Vine to sample their offerings...
Fiveways Food... Hop and Vine It was the wettest day of summer, a day when leaving the house felt punishing; if it were not for our Hop & Vine booking, we most certainly would have stayed in our pyjamas. But when we arrived at the restaurant, weather-beaten and flustered, the warm welcome softened our mood, demonstrating that it would be a great winter hang-out spot.
At that time The Hop & Vine had only been open for four months, but already it had gained a positive reputation, and for good reason. Between the outstanding food and efficient service, I would challenge anyone to come up with a plausible criticism. While the rain plummeted to the ground outside, we spent a leisurely three hours gorging our way through the menu. As suggested on their website, the first bite was “with the eye” and, whilst it seemed a pity to spoil such artistic presentation, by the time the aroma hit our nasal passages we no longer cared much for art; we simply wanted to devour every last morsel.

WE LOVED: • The extensive drinks list - in particular the inclusion of vegan wines. It will take you many visits to work your way through the selection of fine wines, bubbles, craft beers, ciders, cocktails and mocktails. • Their commitment to locally sourced produce: fruit and veg is Sussex-grown, wine is selected by Butler’s Wine Cellars, ice cream comes from ethically-minded Scoop & Crumb and, in true Fiveways spirit, meat is supplied by Barfields. • The Cappuccino Crème Brulée - honestly, it’s a party in the mouth. It is so astonishingly good that a gentleman came in with the sole intention of ordering this little dessert of dreams whilst he read the newspaper and ignored the unseasonal weather. • The relaxed mood and unpretentious décor, which attracts an eclectic mix of diners. By the window a couple enjoyed a romantic date, behind us a family with small children dined with plenty of space for prams and paraphernalia, and in the corner a group of twenty-somethings played the name game during what was evidently a boozy lunch. • The staff: professional, prompt, flawless service, delivered with charisma. INSIDER TIPS • The upstairs is perfect for private dinners or parties, comfortably seating 30+. It’s a welcoming space, with its own bar and the facility to play your choice of music. • Coming soon is The Dinner Club: this will involve all sorts of exciting and sociable food-based events, including cheese and wine tasting, craft beer appreciation sessions, and fine dining experiences. • Turn up hungry and wear elasticated pants (you’ll be grateful you followed this advice when you’re tucking into your third irresistible course). www.barefootblissblog.wordpress.com

Brighton and Hove National Trust Association Our local association was inaugurated in 1972 to promote and prosper the National Trust (NT), and to arrange social events for the enjoyment of our members.
We’ve been out and about buying lots of new stock in the past few weeks. Look out for new goodies arriving from now until Christmas. We have a super selection of vintage-inspired, fabric-covered hair accessories from Jessie Jumbles - find out more here: www.jessiejumbles.co.uk - and fun cards and jewellery from Little Papa. I love the Zoom lolly necklace and brooch. See more at www.littlepapa.co.uk . Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates and special offers.
Our objectives remain the same and our friendly group, until now restricted to NT members, is now open to anyone wishing to support our ideas. We meet twice a month on a Thursday afternoon at the Ajex Centre, Hove, and on a Monday evening at Brighton Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College (BHASVIC). We have a variety of speakers during the autumn, winter and spring giving talks, usually illustrated, on a wide range of subjects, including Charles Dickens, the Olympic Games, Brighton In Pictures Over The Last 100 Years and Bee Keeping, to mention just a few. We also have a NT sales table at these meetings, not forgetting a cup of tea and biscuits. We have several coach outings during the summer months, visiting NT properties and many other places of interest. In the autumn we have a lunch, a Christmas tea, and a New Year lunch. Each year a five day holiday is organised, visiting places of great national beauty and NT properties. All these activities raise money and we are proud that over the years we have donated over £100,000 to the NT, priority being given to local properties, namely Nymans Gardens and Saddlescombe Farm. The annual subscription is £10 and details of the dates and times of all our meetings and how to join are available from our Membership Secretary, Miss E RaynarSmith, tel: 01273 562404. Please contact her for more information and an application form. Come along to one of our meetings for a taster; you will be most welcome. Paul Smith, Chairman

Flu occurs every year. It’s a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious illness. Older people and those with long term health conditions are among the most at risk from flu. The best way to avoid catching and spreading flu is by having a vaccination before the flu season starts.

SONG OF THE MONTH 5

Keith of local lo-fi rockers Les Cactus & the Rumpy Pumpkins offers his monthly musical recommendations...
Les Cactus Recommends...
Song of the month:
Gangsta by tUnE-yArDs, 2011 Watching live footage of rock concerts is generally disappointing, I find. The event itself may well be an exciting, euphoric experience where audience and performers are communally and transcendently united as one, through shared adrenaline and sweat-fuelled musical ecstasy. You don’t quite get that though when you’re sat watching it on the telly in the evening with a hot drink and a biscuit, and the sound turned low so as not to disturb your good lady and dog who are conked out on the sofa snoring in stereo. My dissatisfaction established itself around the time when my friends at school began listening to heavy metal and smoking. Visiting one of their houses suddenly meant sitting around watching hours of live Led Zeppelin videos which always climaxed with a 15-minute version of ‘Moby Dick’, 13 minutes of which was a drum solo. According to my companions, being there would’ve been the equivalent of being in the presence of God, but I was never convinced. I don’t even think the rest of the band were either - their walking off stage during the solo told me all I needed to know about what it was like to actually be there. Anyway, attempting some optimism I had a go at watching some of the televised footage of this year’s Glastonbury festival, and to my surprise I’m glad I did because, amongst all the stuff that I can’t now even remember who they were, was tUnE-yArDs: fluorescent face-painted, hollering women banging out unpredictable African-based polyrhythms, decked out in ill-fitting, multi-coloured, home-made, fish-themed outfits, a brass section, distorted electric ukulele and a bass player who looked half asleep, backed by amateur dancers dressed in cardboard eyeballs wrapped in a silk sheet. They were glorious. I could even turn the sound up a bit as my girlfriend Kate woke up, mesmerised by what she was seeing and hearing. I’m always pleased when our tastes coincide – often, while listening to much of the music I love, she gives me a look of someone who wants to punch my ears.
