WELCOME TO OCTOBER IN FIVEWAYS So, September was great wasn’t it! Record temperatures and a very welcome extension to Summer! This month however Summer really does start to recede into the past and it all culminates on 30th October with the clocks going back an hour....so mark that one on your calendar. Good timing for Halloween however when all the local ghosts and ghouls come out for the annual Trick or Treating and Halloween parties. Enjoy the autumnal colours!

QUIZ QUESTION ONE:
Who won six consecutive Wimbledon singles titles in the 1980s?
fiveways
Our cover star...
LOCAL CELEBRITY...FIVEWAYS WILF Wilf the cat has become quite a celebrity in Fiveways. Although living in the area since 2009 when he was adopted from the RSPCA, it’s only relatively recently that he’s taken to wandering around, visiting neighbours and the local businesses. He regularly pops into local shops and even has his own Facebook page with over 1,000 ‘likes’, an Instagram and a Twitter account where people who see him on his travels can post their own photos! Wilf lives with his ‘staff’, Johanna, Guy and Cait, residents of Lowther Road, and two other cats. “When I started getting phone calls from neighbours who’d walked into a room to find him quite at home on their 5 sofa, I realised how many people he was visiting each day,” explained Johanna. “Then I started getting calls from the shops, asking if we’d lost our cat as he had wandered in to visit them. One day, a neighbour sent me a photo of Wilf curled up quite happily on a chair outside the deli and that’s when I thought I’d create a Facebook page for people to post their photos of him. It helps us Photo by Paul Brown, Project Cat Photography to know what he’s up to!” Wilf has recently been hanging out at the Flour Pot Baking him in as we are so worried about him being in or ery, WigWam and even the Fiveways pub. Crossing the busy roads, however, is a big concern. “We’ve tried keep- causing an accident, but he gets so miserable. We can’t thank the residents and businesses of Fiveways enough for looking out for Wilf.”

Many of the businesses he visits kindly supply him with a bowl of water, although Johanna stresses that he shouldn’t be given anything else to eat or drink. “He’s an old cat now; we think he’s about 14, and has a sensitive stomach.” This message doesn’t seem to have reached Wilf, however, as he recently got into big trouble and had to take apology gifts round to a neighbour after sneaking into her kitchen and helping himself to her homemade chicken soup. Wilf badges are available to buy for £1 from Fiveways Arts & Crafts and Flour Pot Bakery, with the profit of 76p donated directly to Lost Cats Brighton, although supplies are low. “Currently, we’ve raised over £200 for Lost Cats. It’s phenomenal – there are badges being worn locally but also by Wilf fans all over the world!” Wilf just takes it all in his stride. “We’re so pleased that he brings a smile to other people’s days. Just one thing: please don’t call him ‘grumpy’ - that’s just his face, he’s a happy chap underneath!” To see more pictures of Wilf, visit his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/FivewaysWilf/ Twitter: @fiveways_wilf Instagram: FivewaysWilf_And_Friends

fiveways A great achievement by The Pet Shed...
THE PET SHED NAMED IN SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY ‘SMALL BIZ 100’ A Fiveways-based animal lover who gave up her job as an accountant to pursue her dream of opening a pet shop has been named among the 100 small businesses in the UK to be celebrated by Small Business Saturday, the campaign that culminates in the UK’s dedicated day for small businesses on December 3rd. Hannah James owns The Pet Shed in Fiveways, a small pet shop supporting the community. The shop has been open for nearly three years and doesn’t actually stock pets but concentrates instead on offering the best and most natural pet food, treats, toys and accessories. The shop, which offers a number of products that are supplied by small businesses, will now be among the select number of companies to be featured by the Small9Business Saturday campaign one per day for the 100 days leading up to Small Business Saturday itself. “When my local pet shop came up for sale I jokingly said that I should buy it,” explains Hannah. “Then I seriously considered it, but at the time could not raise the funds. Some time later, rather than buy the existing pet shop, I opened a new shop from scratch. I decided to apply my personal philosophy of eating natural food and buying sustainable products to the shop, so I stock natural dog foods and eco-friendly pet toys and accessories.”

Anniversary
Last year saw £623m spent with small businesses across the UK on Small Business Saturday, an increase of 24% on the previous year. It is free to participate and any small businesses can get involved. The campaign also delivers advice and opportunities to connect with other small businesses. In short, Small Business Saturday exists to support, inspire and promote small businesses. fiveways Hi, I am Nelson, a four-legged Fiveways resident. I am a black Miniature Schnauzer puppy, born in April and growing quickly.
NELSON’S COLUMN...UPSET TUMMIES! I’ve not been feeling well; a bit of a tummy ache and interesting things happening at the other end… Been wondering if it is something to do with the delicious morsel of smelly loveliness I ate off the pavement yesterday but anyhow… Fortunately my human has noticed I am a little off colour so has left me plenty of fresh water and has let me have lots of alone time while I try and get better. Upset tummies are part of a dog’s life and generally speaking we recover within 24 hours. If things don’t improve after 24 hours you could try a starvation diet (just water) for 12–24 hours, then introduce plain chicken and rice (in a ratio of 1:2) or some Lily’s 15 Kitchen Recovery Recipe, which contains a probiotic, feeding small amounts 3-4 times a day. Do make sure your pooch is drinking water and if he becomes lethargic, bites his side, has a fever or there is any sign of blood get him to the vets. Upset tummies can be caused by many things - that tasty morsel I spoke of earlier, a nasty bug or an intolerance to certain foods. If it’s persistent it may be worth looking at diet or getting some tests done by the vet.
Prevention is, of course, better than a cure so always keep food poisonous to dogs out of reach (chocolate, raisins, grapes, avocado, cooked bones, mushrooms, xylitol). There are a few natural remedies such as digestive tablets or tree bark powder that can help maintain a healthy tummy and it’s always worth keeping a supply of Recovery Recipe in the cupboard. Hmm, perhaps I do fancy a little bit of chicken and rice… Nelson was talking to Hannah James, dog translator and owner of The Pet Shed, 100 Preston Drove, BN1 6EW. Tel: 01273 554164

QUIZ QUESTION THREE:
What does a numismatist study or collect?
fiveways Our regular book review from Gary Mepsted...
MY GRANDMOTHER’S GLASS EYE A LOOK AT POETRY BY CRAIG RAINE HARDBACK, ATLANTIC BOOKS, £25 This month’s book attempts to define the nature of poetry and how it functions. Okay, before you hastily turn the page, thinking, ‘Poetry’s not my thing’, hold on. Raine effortlessly strips away the often conscious snobbery, pretentiousness, and the whiff of the arcane which all too frequently renders poetry off limits, even for the voracious and eclectic reader. 17 Raine’s punchy, pugnacious approach, his wit and sarcasm, hydrate what could easily be a dull and desiccated subject. If, like me, when thinking about the learning of poetry and poets, you’re transported back to draughty university lecture rooms where some tired academic reads from his ancient, yellowing notes on Tennyson or Wordsworth, you will be in for a very pleasant surprise with Raine’s wonderfully energetic book.
‘My Grandmother’s Glass Eye’ covers such topics as Rhythm, Lyric, Metaphor, Sub-text, etc. All poetic ground is covered. Although students and academics will discover much to chew upon, Raine’s treatise is not intended solely for those readers who are studying, or teaching, the subject. The more general reader with an interest in literature will gain much wisdom and insight and come away, not with just a deeper understanding of the poetry, but of other literary forms too. Raine borrows freely from the novel to inform and consolidate his arguments. The constituents which comprise great poetry also apply to prose as well. I do understand that this book will have a limited readership, but I would urge you to take a look at ‘My Grandmother’s Glass Eye’. Raine’s love of poetry and the enthusiasm with which he tackles so much received
wisdom and frequently lashes out at fellow poets and critics is exhilarating. Believe me, you never knew a book on poetry could be so exciting. Gary Mepsted

QUIZ QUESTION FOUR:
Who was Radio 1’s first female DJ?
fiveways Give your body a treat...
HOLISTIC TREATMENTS AT NEW DAWN The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered: “Man: because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives like he is never going to die, yet dies having never really lived.” We at New Dawn are offering, next to beauty treatments, holistic treatments, to bring balance back in your busy lifestyles. In holistic treatments we look at the person as a whole and acknowledge the physical self, the mental self and the emotional self. Our body can get affected on any of these levels and show symptoms when we suffer too long from physical, mental or emotional stress. You don’t have to have any symptoms to benefit 19 from a treatment. Think of your car, you don’t only take it to the garage when it breaks down - you have it serviced once a year. Why not service your body on a regular basis? Holistic treatments, whether it is a Yumeiho massage adjustment, Intuitive Bodywork, Abdominal Detox Massage, Colonic Hydrotherapy, Indian Head Massage, Hypnotherapy or Counselling, will create more awareness by being and feeling your body - something we forget to do during our busy lives. This awareness can make you take
conscious decisions in your life regarding your body, your mental state and your emotions, creating more balance between your body and mind. This is what we have to offer for you and we are looking forward to introducing our new therapists.

fiveways Update from the Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods...
AUTUMN IN HOLLINGBURY & BURSTEAD WOODS As the leaves change to hues of brown, red and gold - falling from the trees and carpeting the woodland floor - we reflect on the closing of another season. What have we achieved? What did we get right? And what didn’t work out quite as we’d planned? Although spring and early summer this year were very wet and not great for humans, our trees and shrubs loved all that rain. The Hazel in our coppice glades has put on so much growth that we should be able to take our first cut this winter. The branches are cut off near to the ground to produce poles or rods which we can use in the woods. Cutting the branches off near to the ground does the trees no harm as new shoots will 21 soon emerge starting the whole cycle off again. Until the trees grow tall enough to shut out the light to the woodland floor, the sunlight flooding in will stimulate dormant wildflowers to flourish again and provide nectar and pollen for the insects. The small trees and shrubs such as the Hawthorn, Guelder rose and Dogwood, with its colourful bare stems in winter, also benefited from the weeks of wet weather and are now well established along the western edge of Hollingbury woods. In our September work session our volunteers cleared the area around each tree and shrub to give them room to breathe as the nettles and blackberries had also flourished and they were beginning to smother the young trees. The blackberries produced an abundance of fruit this year and are loved by birds and small mammals such as wood mice and voles, and of course they are great in a crumble with custard! The recently created butterfly and bee banks, especially the large one at the top of Hollingbury meadow, have flowered prolifically. There is perhaps a little too much of some species – such as the rampant Ox-eye daisy which has rather swamped smaller species like the yellow Kidney Vetch and Birds Foot Trefoil which

As well as a fine selection of classic films from our partner Talking Pictures (including ‘Brighton Rock’), there’s a smorgasbord of original programmes for everyone. Music fans will love Noise Reel, DJ Box, Urban Expression and of course The Brighton Album Chart Show, as well as special coverage of some of this year’s biggest festivals – that’s Latitude and Shardfest.
25
The Friends of Preston Park present another Halloween Lantern Walk in the park on Saturday 29 October. The walk will start at 7pm and will take about half an hour, but you’re welcome to come any time from 6pm. Meet in the men’s bowls pavilion. Please bring home-made lanterns (no naked flames please!) and if you like you can come in scary fancy dress. There will be story-telling, and sweet or savoury crêpes and hot drinks will be sold by ‘The French Revolution’ crêperie van. After the walk the best lantern and the best children’s fancy dress costume will win a prize. And – new this year – a prize will be given to the best adult fancy dress (we know you love to dress up!). Come and join us to scare off all those unwanted ghouls, ghosts, witches, ogres and assorted horri-beebles from Preston Park.
Brand new programmes and ideas are arriving at Latest TV too, created here in Sussex. ‘Quintessentially Jessica’ is all about Jessica Kellgren-Hayes, teaching viewers how to sign the alphabet along with how to bake a sugar/grain-free muffin! And there’s the latest from the forefront of LGBT+ issues with Sophie Cook’s bang up-to-date ‘Beyond The Rainbow’. And, of course, Latest TV’s regular thought-provoking and entertaining regulars from The Vote, Latest News, Guy Lloyd’s 2-Minute Telly Show, Latest Homes Live, Albion Night and so much more.
Stop press: If you want, you can help our Park Rangers carve out wonderful Halloween pumpkins which will be used to line the walk. Come and join them in the men’s bowls pavilion on Friday 28 October from 10.30 to 2.30.

fiveways The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah McLoughlin...
OCTOBER RECIPE...APPLE PUMBLE Autumn apples in an almond pastry case topped with a buttery nutty crumble topping. Ingredients For the almond pastry: 175g plain flour 25g ground almonds 60g stork margarine or butter 60g vegetable fat (eg Trex) ½ teaspoon almond extract 6-7 level teaspoons cold water For the apple filling: 750g Bramley apples, quartered, cored, peeled and 27sliced 50g caster sugar 2 tablespoons water Crumble topping: 100g plain flour 50g butter, room temperature 25g demerara sugar 25g walnuts, roughly chopped 25g flaked almonds Method: •
•
•
Put the prepared apples into a saucepan and add the sugar and water. Cover and cook gently, stirring, for about 10 minutes until the apples are soft. Taste and add more sugar if required; set aside to cool. To make the pastry place the flour and ground almonds into a bowl, add the Trex and margarine and using your fingertips rub the fat into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add the water and almond extract and, using a knife, mix. Gather the mixture together and briefly knead until smooth, shape into a ball and wrap in clingfilm; chill for 30 minutes. To make the crumble topping place the flour into a bowl and using your fingertips rub in the butter to resemble breadcrumbs; add the walnuts, almonds and sugar.
0
•
Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and line a 9” loose-bottomed flan tin. Prick the pastry base all over with a fork. Line with foil or non-stick baking paper, allowing it to come above the rim so that it can be easily lifted out after baking. Fill with ceramic baking beans or dried rice and bake in a preheated oven at 190C/170C fan oven for 10 minutes. Lift the paper and beans out and return the pastry shell to the oven for another 10 minutes; take out and leave to cool.
•
Spoon the cooled apple into the pastry case leaving enough room for the crumble. Add the crumble mix, evenly covering the top of the apple, press the crumble down lightly.
•
Place back into the oven at 180C or 170C fan assisted oven. Cook for 20-25 minutes until the crumble is lightly browned.
•
Serve warm or cold with custard, cream or ice-cream or all three!

fiveways Welcome to the October edition of Fiveways Gardens...
IN THE GARDEN – OCTOBER 2016 Autumn is arguably the best time to plant most things – shrubs, trees, climbers and perennials. The soil is still warm from the summer and there’s now evidence that roots often continue growing into December. In Brighton’s mild climate this could be prolonged into January. If you can get plants in during autumn they’ll have a root system better able to cope with whatever weather comes next year. It’s time to plant some bulbs. Daffs and alliums can be planted from now as can the very early flowering Iris reticulata. Tulips are best left till November to plant. If you’ve not got bulbs yet, then get browsing bulb brochures, websites or garden centres and nurseries for 35 spring flowering bulbs. As well as your tried and tested favourites, why not try something new this year? There are all sorts of bulbs that won’t be suitable for your garden soil or aspect so perhaps you’ve not considered them. However, many will grow quite happily in containers. It’s a good idea to incorporate a bit of horticultural grit (available at most garden centres) in with the compost as well as putting some broken crocks or bits of polystyrene (much lighter) in the bottom of the container. Bulbs, and incidentally most winter bedding, will perform all the better for having good drainage. Please, no pots with saucers under them over winter – you’ll drown your plants. Whether you order from catalogues or buy from your favourite nursery or garden centre, it makes sense to buy as soon as you can. This way, the bulbs will be in better condition when you plant them and you’ll have a much better choice, as many of the more desirable varieties sell quickly. Prune those “out of control” climbing and rambling roses after flowering and tie in the stems. This is especially important if you didn’t get round to it last year. I’ve seen roses pull fences down in windy autumns and I’m sure one’s on the way.
If you fancy taking a look at some dramatic autumn colour, you could head off to Sheffield Park, High Beeches or Nymans gardens – all are stunning at this time of year. Best wishes Lisa

fiveways A new photography exhibition in The Open Market...
AN ARK IN THE UK With a nod and a wink to the 40th anniversary of punk culture hitting the streets of the UK, an exhibition that combines photography and ephemera goes on show from October 4th at The Open Market, London Road. It is the creation of Brighton resident George Coles who describes it as a personal, irreverent and satirical view of various aspects of our modern world by looking at manʼs relationship with his furry, slimy, scaly and feathered friends. References stretch broad and wide, from climate change and GM through to refugees and Brexit. ‘An Ark in the UKʼ has little of Rotten and Vicious but is more to do with road kill and vermin and at its heart is a photographic A-Z inventory of creatures whether alive, dead or mythical that have been found within these shores and chosen for salvation from the rising waters. As in the Bible and Koran versions of this story, they enter this ark two by two, but here the pairs are not breeding mates of like species; they are chosen on alphabetical criteria. Darwin would have termed it an ʻunnatural selectionʼ, so in essence the project is unsustainable and doomed to failure. The images themselves are predominantly urban; the ʻhandʼ and appearance of man is apparent in all of them, indeed they may say more about life on two legs rather than on four, six, or eight. The metaphorical ark which has been specially built for the occasion by George and his son Wilf comprises four large hardwood cabinets with the photographs and ephemera hidden from view behind doors. It is for the inquisitive to open them and find what lies within these 21st century ʻcabinets of curiositiesʼ. The exhibition is part of Brighton Photo Fringe and will run from October 4th (the day given to celebrate Francis of Assisi, patron saint of the animals) until October 23rd. No computers were harmed in the making of this exhibition. Further details from www.thestraggler.net.

SPORTS TRENDS - 2017 AND BEYOND It might feel slightly premature, but if you want to know next year’s hot sports trends, then look no further. Get in early and get ahead of the competition! Running: Not a new trend exactly. It’s been on the up since 2012. Cheap, and convenient, the phenomenal successes of Mo Farah and Usain Bolt have helped running become uber-cool. Farah’s performance in Rio can only boost it more. Expect an increase in mass participation events, from the 100 metres to ultra marathons. Remember, it’s only a short roll down the hill to your local parkrun! Open Water Swimming.: Pool swimming has always been 41 popular, but cold, murky water and unreliable weather previously meant outdoor swimming was for British eccentrics only! Not any more. Open water swimming has arrived and is growing fast. There are scores of organised events on offer: in seas, rivers, lakes here and abroad. Brighton (always ahead of the game) has its own Pier to Pier swim events, and the new Brighton Triathlon. Obstacle racing: Another sport that continues to reinvent itself successfully. It requires agility, strength, stamina, a head for heights and a high pain threshold! Re-invigorated by Crossfit gyms in particular, and with a

bigger focus on team participation, obstacle racing is set to become even bigger. Expect plenty more opportunities to haul yourself and your team-mates over a 5 metre wall and through a flaming mud-pit. ÖtillÖ: Not as benign as it may sound, but a new endurance sport. Originating in Scandinavia in 2006, ÖtillÖ is a team stage race over water and land. Teams swim and run together to complete a series of routes between predetermined checkpoints and switch from swim to run and back again several times during the race. Locations are generally rugged and remote and distances tend to be long! The first UK event takes place in Scotland in October, and I think it will grow exponentially. Wearable tech: Not a sport, obviously, but this is a serious trend which is here to stay. Fitness trackers and GPS-enabled smart watches have already found a mass market, but more sophisticated wearable technology is on its way. Micro sensors can be woven into fabrics and embedded in sports shoes to measure and analyse detailed athletic performance metrics instantly. These new developments will be available to all, not just elites. Start saving now though; the first generations of technology are rarely cheap. Marianne Clark, founder of FITSO FITNESS, is a personal trainer, GB age group triathlete and running and endurance coach offering individual training, run groups and multi-sport coaching for all levels from beginners upwards. THE FOOD ASSEMBLY COMES TO BRIGHTON A new way of buying food is coming to the Open Market, Brighton. As seen in the BBC and The Guardian, The Food Assembly is a local initiative that brings people together to buy fresh food directly from local farmers and foodmakers. Every week Food Assembly customers in Brighton can order food online from local food producers before picking it up weekly at a local venue. All the food comes from an average distance of 28 miles, compared to the 600 miles with a supermarket. Community is at the heart of The Food Assembly at the Open Market, it connects neighbours to farmers, neighbours to each other, and everyone to their43 food. By choosing to buy local, shoppers can support the community of Brighton, as for every £1 spent through Brighton Food Assembly, 90p stays in the local economy. It also ensures your money reaches the right people; food producers keep over 80% of sales for every product sold, compared to 15%-25% through supermarkets. Also, there is less food waste as all the food is ordered in advance. Whether from their iPhone app or laptop, weekly shoppers can choose from unique local products, such as organic, artisan bread from Infinity Foods Bakery; coldpressed juice from Brambletye Fruit Farm; and yummy cakes and desserts from Brightsoul’s Kitchen. Not to forget plenty of fresh local vegetables and cheeses from Fletching Glasshouses and High Weald Dairy.

The Brighton Assembly launches online on Saturday 1st October at 9am, with the first collection and launch event on Saturday 8th October 2016, 2pm-4pm. Anyone can come along and meet farmers, food makers and their neighbours, taste local food samples and see where their food comes from.
The Brighton Assembly is organised by food-obsessed Sophia Harvey, who loves to share her passion for sustainable food with others.
“I can’t wait for the idea to grow in the wider community For more information, visit the website: that live and work in Brighton and Hove. I’m so pleased thefoodassembly.com to be able to bring local food to somewhere like the Open Market, a place that connects people, where we share more than just money for goods. It’s going to have such a huge positive impact.”
