I have to admit I am writing this super early in an attempt to get this September edition to the printers before heading off to France for the family holiday. At the time of writing, the summer so far has been amazing with lots of sunshine and soaring temperatures. I hope that that still applies for you as you read this! So what have we for you this month? Well, good question! What you should find within the Directory’s pages this month are all the usual features, plus an article by a local Fiveways family who keep ferrets as pets, as well as an article sent in by St Matthias regarding a Harvest Thanksgiving collection they are doing for the Clock Tower Sanctuary – a local charity who support homeless people. You know, I am sure there is loads more but I can’t tell you what!! Put your feet up, have a flick through and see what you find!! Here is your chance to visit Varndean to see if you feel it is the right school for your child...
Varndean Open Day
24th September 5.30pm - 8.30pm It’s that time of year when thoughts turn to school, education and the future. Choosing where your child goes next is a daunting prospect for many parents - particularly as this may be your first time going through the process. There are so many things to consider – results, opportunities, activities, reputation, friends…….one of the simplest ways to help you make such an important decision is to go and have a look! Visit the schools and let your instincts guide you. Which school gives you that ‘good feeling’?
achieved the award - and one of only 1% of schools nationally. To learn more, come and see for yourselves. Our interactive Open Evening is on Wednesday 24th September, 5.30-8.30pm. We want you to come and get involved at Varndean! You’ll be most welcome!
At Varndean, we believe that everyone can be great at something given the chance. We offer a culture for children to grow and develop their talents – they could be the next Alan Turing or the next Alan Sugar. We aim to bring out the best in your child, and we take the job very seriously. The school has an extensive enrichment and extension programme that supports and enhances the National Curriculum. It allows students the space to develop their interests and skills further – they can make elephant toothpaste in Science, play football on a 3G pitch, complete a Bronze or Silver DofE Award, learn Latin, direct a school play, make space food for astronauts, visit Budapest, design and make play mats for an orphanage in Peru…. These are only some of the things that take place in a single year at Varndean - in addition to the excellent day-to-day provision. We are thrilled to have recently achieved the NACE Challenge Award (National Association for Able Children in Education), making the school a centre of excellence for Gifted and Talented Students. Varndean School is the only secondary school in Brighton & Hove to have

Ferrets of Fiveways - Phoebe & Flo GENERAL BUILDING &
01273 530977 / 07554750499
Two years ago, Fiveways residents and animal lovers Tara and Sean rescued two Polecat Ferret sisters, Phoebe and Flo, from Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare, near Lewes. When Flo recently decided to take an unaccompanied tour of the neighbourhood, they were overwhelmed by the kindness the Fiveways Community showed in helping to find the four-legged explorer. Both Tara and Sean were surprised by how many people were interested in what kind of pets they make, too. Here, Tara shares some of the most common things Fiveways residents wanted to find out:
www.lewisbyardplastering.co.uk
What are they like as pets? They’re incredibly fun, inquisitive and mischievous. Some of our friends have likened them to a cross between a puppy and a kitten. Ferret comes from the Latin word ‘furittus’, meaning ‘little thief’ because they love to secret away little things. Phoebe and Flo are no different: my sandwiches once got dragged from my lunchbox before I had a chance to put them in my bag. It took a few days to find them! What do ferrets eat? All ferrets need a high-protein diet. Phoebe and Flo’s staple is a dried food especially for ferrets. They need fresh mineral water daily, and enjoy drinking out of unusual places, particularly the shower and the lids of drinking bottles! Usually, you can give fresh meat or fish as treats, but Phoebe and Flo are real fuss-pots and have no interest in even the best quality meats. Show them a tangerine or a sniff of beer? That’s a different story.

Here is an appeal to help a local girl in need of support from the the Fiveways community...
Niamh’s Fund..Please Help! Niamh is a brave eight-year-old girl who lives in Preston Park, Brighton. She is a bright, caring little girl who loves animals and dreams of owning a puppy. In January 2012 she was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumour, a rare childhood cancer. Niamh (pronounced ‘Neve’) has undergone major surgery several times, has had radiotherapy and over 70 weeks of chemotherapy. Earlier this year came the devastating news that the cancer had returned. Niamh is now coming to the end of treatment currently available in the UK. Niamh faces the challenges before her with immense courage and a maturity beyond her years. She has amazed everyone with her brave, strong spirit, cheeky sense of humour and sunny smile. The nurses and doctors often remark on how well she copes. Gilli, Niamh’s mum, says, “Niamh accepts all she has gone through with such good grace, but cancer has stolen much of her childhood.” We’ve set up Niamh’s Fund so Niamh can access treatment that isn’t available on the NHS, both in the UK and abroad. We need to raise at least £100,000. Please help with donations of whatever you can spare to uk.virginmoneygiving. com/team/NiamhsFund If you would like to help with fundraising ideas and/or want to volunteer to join Niamh’s Fundraisers’ Team, please contact Catherine Spain at cat.spain@btinternet.com You can spread the word by liking us on Facebook www. facebook.com/niamhsfund and following us on Twitter @ niamhsfund There are many exciting fundraising events planned for the autumn. QUIZ QUESTION FOUR : In which year did Foinavon win the Grand National?
RECIPE
13 The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah Stubbs
Apple and blackberry cake Autumn is here and the blackberries and apples this year are perfect to pile into this deliciously moist, lightly spiced loaf cake. Ingredients: 250g self-raising flour 1 teaspoon mixed spice 150g margarine 150g soft light brown sugar 1 tablespoon marmalade 2 tablespoons milk 2 eggs 2 eating apples, peeled and chopped 175g blackberries For the optional icing: Approx. 125g icing sugar 10 blackberries
Method: • Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin with baking paper. • Heat the oven to 160C /140C fan oven/ gas mark 3 • Sift the flour and spice. • In a large bowl cream the margarine, marmalade and sugar together until pale and creamy. • Add the sieved flour, spice, eggs and milk and beat until combined. • Fold in 2/3 of the chopped apple. • Spoon half the mixture into the prepared tin spreading to the edges with the back of the spoon. Dot half the blackberries over the cake mix and carefully spread the rest of mixture over the top. Add the remaining blackberries to the top of the cake pushing them into the mixture and then sprinkle with the rest of the chopped apple.
• Leave to cool on a wire rack. • To make the icing: press about 10 soft blackberries through a sieve, so that you have about a tablespoon of blackberry puree. Gradually add the icing sugar until you have a consistency that you can drizzle over the cake. Without the icing this cake makes a perfect treat for those back to school lunch boxes, add the icing and you have a pretty teatime cake that will be the star of the table! elcome to the Book Review... Two for the price of one! bruary edition of veways Gardens Our regular book review with BBC book reviewer Gary Mepsted...
It’s a return to business as usual this month - except not quite. Not being able to choose between two books, I’ve decided to review them both.
We’ll kick off with Duffy by Dan Kavanagh, which was first published in 1980 and is now back in print courtesy of Orion. Beneath the blurred photograph of the author on the flyleaf, the accompanying biography states, amongst other things, that Dan Kavanagh worked as a deckhand on a Liberian tanker, as a steer wrestler and a waiter-on-roller-skates at a Tucson diner. This exotic biography is as much a work of fiction as the novel itself, for DK is none other than feted literary novelist Julian Barnes. It’s quite common for ‘serious novelists’ to moonlight as genre fiction writers nowadays, but back then it was rare and JB seems pretty cagey about his murky indeed, why sleazynot pastgive as DKitwhich is a shame. There was a slight sense that this was an exercise and that Mr Harris was diligently ticking the relevant boxes as he went along. However - I did enjoy it sufficiently to get hold of a copy of his first novel, The Hollow Man, which I am looking forward to reading. So, despite my caveats, I do recommend Deep Shelter. Slimming World... A bouncy castle photo shocked Hannah into shedding three stone. Now feeling “on top of the world”, she’s ready to inspire others to do the same. Hannah, 30, from Brighton, felt “physically sick” after seeing a Facebook photo from a work fun day. “I felt, looking at the picture, that I WAS the bouncy castle and I knew I had to lose weight.” Seeing a colleague was losing weight whilst still eating platefuls of delicious looking food, I wanted to find out more. “When she told me she was a Slimming World member I was sceptical and curious, so I went online to find my nearest group.” Slimming World hold weekly meetings in which over 500,000 members attend to support one another through the company’s unique “Image Therapy” style. “I braved it on my first night to be surprised at the warm welcome from the group. Losing half a stone in two weeks helped me see that it could fit with my lifestyle and I could still enjoy the foods I love!” Hannah went on to learn food ideas, tips and hints from her new friends in the group. “I loved the camaraderie spirit and support. The group helped me create fab meals with my husband that we both enjoy. We regularly eat curries, chips, burgers and spaghetti bolognaise whilst losing weight. I also enjoy guilt-free indulgences in crisps, chocolate and ice cream!” Hannah has now lost three stone from attending her group and has bounced back with confidence. “Since losing weight,

We love to feature local business. This month we introduce Green Rooms...
Garden design & landscaping – how it works? Green Rooms Landscapes & Gardens is a local business that specialises in garden design and landscaping. The majority of our work is doing garden design drawings and then going on to complete the garden landscaping, building and planting. We also are equally happy to just create garden designs.
Most people quite sensibly only start thinking about their gardens when the sun starts to shine and the worst of winter is over. This makes complete sense, but it is often the time when if you call a garden designer or landscape contractor you’ll find they are already fully booked for the next three months or so, and thus the beautiful garden you were planning for the summer ahead is unlikely to come to fruition. Forward planning is really sensible to avoid the rush and be ahead of the queue. If you have the slightest inclination that you might want something done to your garden for
landscapes & gardens
next summer, then do a bit of thinking in the autumn and as soon as you have a rough idea of what you want to do (however vague) then think about contacting a garden designer/landscape contractor. I’m always impressed by people who manage to put thoughts of Christmas on hold momentarily to think about how their garden might look next year. The next stage is for me to come and take a look at your garden with you. Currently at Green Rooms we prefer to offer 3D garden design, as this offers an inexpensive way of giving you a picture of how the garden is likely to look. Garden design work typically costs much less than 10% of a landscaping project, so is a good investment to iron out the details and make sure you are getting your desired garden. Once the design has been agreed then the garden can be built and planted, either by us or other contractors. Examples of our work can be seen at www.green-rooms.

ROOF & FIREWALL Specialists Have you got damp in the corner of a bedroom or along the ceiling of an upstairs wall? Nine times out of ten it’s faulty lead flashings and firewalls causing these problems. The majority of Brighton homes are at least 100 years old and so are their firewalls. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.

Les Cactus Recommends...
Cariño Mio – Antonio Lopez Garcia and Enrique Gran, 1992 Fiveways seems stuffed to capacity with visual artists and for better or worse I’m yet another one of them. Unfortunately, my own artistic muse has essentially been telling me for many years now that there’s little hope of my giving up the day job any time soon. Never mind, I can always find solace in the example of painters like Spanish national treasure Antonio Lopez Garcia who seems to make a comfortable living out of his artwork against the odds. Described to me once as “an obsessive nutter”, he’ll often spend years to finish a painting. With his sort of work rate, it’s impressive he ever has anything to sell at all, let alone make a good living from it, and yet that’s exactly what he’s done for much of his life. The film ‘The Quince Tree Sun’ documents one of his long-winded attempts to paint the quince tree growing in his back yard and is by far the best thing I’ve ever watched art-wise. Through its patient, non-judgemental observations of him going about his work, the film manages to offer an expansive view of what it is to be an artist in the modern world - their place and role

in society, the modesty and arrogance of the artistic temperament, and the dignity and absurdity of creative endeavour and human existence in general. I think it’s magnificent. It was described in a review at the time as being “the cinematic equivalent of watching paint dry”. One thing I find interesting is Antonio’s relationship with music. Although he likes having the radio on as company while he works, he feels it can dilute his ability to be totally present in the moment, affecting his connection with what he’s painting. I listen to a lot of music, particularly at home, but sometimes get the sense of it having too much of a cocooning effect from my hearing what’s immediately going on outside, such as the type of birdsong or the sound of the weather changing, and I’m convinced the more in tune you are with those kinds of noises the more healthy your mental state. In the end though, I just find having a sing-a-long to some of my all-time favourites too much fun to resist, and it seems Antonio is the same – at one point in the film he’s visited by his friend and fellow artist Enrique Gran and, after ignoring his advice on how best he should paint the picture, they do a duet of an old favourite of theirs. They do a lovely job of it. CYCLING

Some advice from friendly local bike shop owner, Paul from Rule 5 Bikes....
Five Reasons to Ride a Bike We all struggle with motivation to get out on our bikes. So I’ve come up with a few reasons to keep in mind next time you take the car to work or stay indoors at the weekend.
1. It’s Fun – Riding a bike down a hill has got to be one of the best feelings in the world. Studies have shown that when we exercise endorphins are released which increase the production of serotonin in the brain; serotonin is the neurotransmitter in our brains that makes us feel happy.
2. It’s Healthy – Cycling is a very low impact sport; it is easy on bones, joints and ligaments. It is a great cardiovascular activity and will build muscles to give you a great pair of legs! Unlike other forms of exercise the improvements to your fitness are instantly noticeable and you will make improvements extremely quickly. 3. It’s Free – Unlike the gym or swimming pool there’s no charge to ride your bike! The network of bike lanes around Brighton is growing constantly and work has recently been finished on a path running alongside the Ditchling road, so access to the Downs is now safer than ever. 4. It’s a Growing Sport – The inspirational efforts of our national sportsmen over the last few years have been amazing. While you’re out on the bike think about Sirs Wiggins, Hoy and Froome and if you’re up for a bit of a trip perhaps book a track cycling day on the very velodrome used in the 2012 Olympics! 5. It Supports UK Businesses – Cycling is a big industry; not just nationally, but in the local area. There are more independent bike shops than you can count on two hands in Brighton, and Morvelo Apparel are based in the very centre of town. Plus, within a stone’s throw of the city, there are three bike brands: Kinesis UK, John Chickens and DMR bikes. Further afield there are independent frame builders who produce bespoke frames and various UK based clothing companies including Rapha, who sponsor Team Sky. Spending a few pennies with these companies will ensure the continued growth of the industry.

So, there are a few reasons for you, there are many more but that’s all I can think of for now, because I’m off out on my bike!

Okido Magazine 5-8 year olds
May we introduces you to OKIDO? It’s a great magazine aimed at 5-8 year olds. A mixture of art, science, experiments, songs, things to make, colouring and puzzles, it has been tried and tested on our kids and proved a big hit. We love OKIDO because it’s a fun, intelligent magazine you can come back to again and again. The magazine is published every two months and we have the latest summer holiday issue in stock now. I enjoy it as much as the children do. Highly recommended! Wigwam 140 Preston Drove
31 Health tip written by Alison Robertson owner of The Lavender Room, Gorgeous therapies for women.
The surprising benefits of massage For many years, millions of people all over the world in dif¬ferent cultures have relied on massage therapy for it its beneficial effects and the positive impact that is has on our health. As we all know, stress is a major risk factor for chronic diseases including heart failure, diabetes and cancer. Regular massage treatments can significantly reduce your cortisol levels (stress hormones) and promote heart health by reducing diastolic and systolic blood pressure and cortisol levels. If you are hunched over a computer all day, standing or sitting for long periods, or even over-exerting yourself with exercise, your muscles will feel as though they are seizing up, resulting in aches and pains. Massage can help relieve the pressure in your muscles, allowing nutrients in your body to replenish damaged tissues and break down lactic acid that causes stiffness. Massage can also help if you have trouble sleeping, instilling calmness and relaxation. Escape from life’s treadmill to zone out and take care of yourself occasionally! So ladies, if you haven’t ever had a massage before or a beauty treatment, you can talk to me over the phone if you have any questions. See September’s offer below. Get back to being you! Best wishes Alison alison@lavenderroomtherapy.co.uk www.lavenderroomtherapy.co.uk Telephone: 07940503001

HARVEST
35
Sent in to us from the good people at St Matthias Church...
Happy to share at Harvest? When people talk about Harvest, for me, it always conjures up memories of school assemblies, walking to the front of the hall with my box of random food stuffs and singing ‘We plough the fields and scatter’. Harvest signifies a time to gather in the crops and collect together items for the winter store, ready to share them through the coming months. At St Matthias Church this year, we will also be collecting items for Harvest during our service on Sunday 28th September at 9.45am. This year all items will go to our chosen charity – The Clock Tower Sanctuary (young homeless charity). We started our link with The Clock Tower last Christmas, when the local community and congregation members overwhelmed us with a fantastic range of donations, bringing them to the Nativity performance on Christmas Eve. Since then we have organised themed monthly collections, in discussion with the volunteers of the charity, including food, toiletries, towels, kitchen items and washing powder, to name but a few. The Clock Tower aims to assist the very youngest of our city’s homeless (16 years +) to develop skills in order to develop confidence in self-care and provide facilities to assist in working themselves out of their situation. In this vein, we are co-ordinating a collection of food, including
fresh fruit and vegetables, for the Sanctuary, to help their homeless youngsters to organise their own shared Harvest lunch, under the supervision of the volunteer chef. Should you feel able to contribute an item to this cause, please come along to the service on 28th September at 9.45am, or drop off your items on any of the previous Sundays. If you are unable to attend the services, do pop in before or afterwards to deliver your goods. We are always very grateful to receive all donations. I have seen first-hand the gratitude, from the homeless youngsters at the Sanctuary, for the gifts. Your donation is so much more than the item you give, but a message that someone, somewhere, cares about them and their welfare. Perhaps your harvest could be gathering together a few unused items from your cupboard, or those last tomatoes growing outside your back door, coming along to the service and singing all three verses of ‘We plough the fields and scatter’. We will play it just for you, I promise! Jayne Hems St Matthias Church, Ditchling Road, Brighton. For further details, please contact the Church Wardens on 01273 507326.
