QUIZ QUESTION ONE:
Which is the financial centre and main city of Switzerland?
fiveways Our local residents interview - Will Pountney...
FIVEWAYS FACE – WILL POUNTNEY Will Pountney runs Barfields Butchers in Fiveways, and was named runner-up in Sussex Butcher of the Year 2016. How long have you worked in Fiveways? I have worked at Fiveways for four years now. I bought the shop in June 2012 and it’s been a bit of a whirlwind four years. Do you live in the area too? Yes, other than five years in London I have lived in Fiveways all my life. I do some long hours at the shop but I’ve only got a five-minute walk to work so I don’t have worry 5 about whether the trains are running or not! What do you most like about the area? I think Fiveways is a fairly unique place to live and work. I don’t think there are many other places to live where you have pretty much every shop/service you need. Butchers, bakers, greengrocers, bank, post office and all the other great shops mean that I don’t find myself going into town very often. Why do you think your shop did so well in these awards? The main reason we did so well was because so many of our amazing customers voted for us! But I like to think the reason so many voted for us was due to the quality of the meat and the customer service we offer. We have been nominated again this year so it would be fantastic if we could go one better. What do you do when you’re not working? I’ve got two young children so when I’m not working most of my time is spent with them. But if I do manage to get some free time I do like getting out on my bike. And I’ve got a slight obsession with barbeque and try to fire up my smoker as often as possible.

PANORAMA FROM BALFOUR ROAD - 1921 Balfour Road was projected in 1901 and built up as far as 148 on the east side, by 1914.
Hello! My name is Diana. I am a fully qualified and insured nail technician with more than 15 years of experience in the industry, specialising in acrylic & gel nail extensions. I am very pleased to announce that I've opened my homebased nail studio on Lowther Road and currently offer a 20% discount on all services to new clients!
This photograph was taken from the window of 134 in 1921. By 1927, the road had been carried through to Ditchling Road (Varndean Girls School was built in 1926) and three more houses had been built. The road was completely made up by 1934. The ground within the wooden fence was then the playing field of York Place School. Balfour Road School was built on the adjoining field in 1925. To the left can be seen the buildings of Varndean Farm and Surrenden Road is seen on the skyline. Varndean Boys School was built in the meadow below this house, in 1932.

fiveways Here’s an event for parents of current Year 6 children...
VARNDEAN SCHOOL WELCOMES OUR COMMUNITY Varndean School has developed an exciting new curriculum programme for all Year 7 students, enabling them to spend protected time in their week to focus on an area of particular interest, talent or skill. This new programme encapsulates the vast array of interests that the students came to Varndean with. They develop key skills such as independence, creativity and teamwork, alongside specialist skills in cookery, music composition, sports leadership, ceramics, computing, ethics and debating, plus many more. “I can’t believe the amount of different things for them to choose from. Really inspiring.” Varndean parent In July, we had our inaugural Specialist Schools showcase 9 event involving all 270 Year 7 students. The event was a celebration to show the incredible work done by students who got to choose a specialist area to focus on for one afternoon a week throughout the year in one of our four Specialist Schools of Discovery, Creativity, Leadership and Expression.

Please come along to find out more at our Open Evening on 22nd September from 5.30-8.30pm.
Feedback from students, parents and staff involved in this new initiative has been overwhelmingly positive. “[It is]so important to do something that’s not assessed or judged alongside peers as in the rest of the school life. [It

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue
You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a whole property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.
The Reality Today
The care Act 2014 introduced in April 2015 allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care under the new charges and assessment of resources regulations. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all currently averaging around £1,000 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for after any relevant income was taken into account.
The Solution
For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e. from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two property Trusts either immediately or within a properly structured Will at the same time in most cases, protect the integrity of your home should you ever require care in the future, so long as avoiding care fees was not a primary motivating reason behind the implementation of the strategy - i.e. you should be looking to protect your half of your property should your spouse remarry after your death, or you should be looking to ensure that your children would not lose 50% of their inheritance should they be made bankrupt or divorce or for example you should be looking to prevent a generational inheritance tax burden in the future. These are all sound reasons for implementing this strategy which in themselves are not deliberate deprivation of assets, but the implementation of which protects the integrity of the property. For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey your property into it which will produce the same result and again this must be well in advance of any care considerations and the motivation must not solely be for the purpose of preventing your home being used to fund your care.
The Reasoning
When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. With our Post Death Property Protection Package when the first partner dies, they leave their half into their Trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the Primary Beneficiary which means that as they own half and are Trustee of the other half they have complete control over the property and what happens to it. The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as ultimate Trust Beneficiaries will have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy and because it is not possible to sell just the survivor’s half of the property, the integrity of the property is protected. While the ‘’market value” of half a property is negligible, The Care Act 2014 guidelines do allow for this half to have a charge placed on it under a deferred payment arrangement for care fees which is why this package includes a Lasting Power of Attorney grant for Property and Financial affairs which will enable a preappointed Attorney to act on behalf of the survivor should they be unable to themselves and negotiate with the Local Authority for the property to be rented out and a percentage of the income given to the Local Authority instead of a charge being placed. The second half of the property would then ultimately go into the Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. With our Whole of Life and Post Death Complete Property and Family Protection Package both halves of the property are conveyed into Trust IMMEDIATELY. This means the whole property is protected straight away and not just after the first party dies. The benefits of this package are that it then protects the property even if both parties go into care before the death of either. It also means that if the survivor goes into care the property does not have to be rented out but if it is, 100% of the income goes directly into the Trusts for the benefit of the survivor or any of the other Trust Beneficiaries and does not have to be given to the Local Authority. The most important benefit of this package though is the property can be sold at any time and the resulting proceeds be fully protected for the whole family within the Trusts and no negotiation with the Local Authority is required. Sole owners and couples who have immediately conveyed their properties into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and not solely for the purpose of preventing their home being used to fund their care (deliberate deprivation of assets) secures the integrity of the property (so long as entry into care is not within 6 months of setting up the strategy) as the property is not absolutely owned by an individual anymore and it is not legal to force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust Beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about which package would be of best benefit to you and your family.

LOCAL CHOIR SPONSORS NEXT GENERATION OF SINGERS! Wednesday night is singing night for adults and now children in our local area. The established and successful 90-strong Brighton Orpheus Choir has launched its Orpheus Young Singers! This small group of talented and enthusiastic young people has given two informal concerts on its own, has joined its parent choir with professional soloists and orchestra in Vaughan Williams’ Hodie with music from Handel’s Messiah, and has recently featured in an ambitious summer concert, including Mendelssohn’s O for the wings of a dove, Verdi’s Chorus of the Hebrew slaves and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s You’ll never 15 walk alone. Such a beautiful performance... [She] had a wonderful time at the concert... I really enjoyed the concert last night. It was wonderful... Thank you for creating such a brilliant opportunity for the children. The Orpheus Young Singers (OYS) is run for children aged 9-15 by the Brighton Orpheus Choir’s director Stella Hull and the soprano Shona Knight. Rehearsals take place during term time in Balfour Primary School on Wednesdays from 5.30pm-6.30pm, next meeting on September 14th. Singing in the choir is a fantastic opportunity; we are passionate about OYS being for everyone who enjoys singing. No one is excluded due to cost, which is only £10 per term following a free trial rehearsal. This funfilled educational initiative is an Arts experience for children at a young age. Our next major concert is Gloria!, a family-friendly Christmas concert with BOC on Saturday December 3rd at St John’s Preston Park. QUIZ QUESTION FOUR:
In which county is the UK prime minister’s official country residence, Chequers?
fiveways Hi, I am Nelson, a four-legged Fiveways resident. I am a black Miniature Schnauzer puppy, born in April and growing quickly. I love chasing things and chewing things that don’t belong to me. I am going to give you a series of TIPS on how to look after me and my friends...
NELSON’S COLUMN September is here and it is back to school time! I am really looking forward to walking to school and making friends with lots of children. Some can be a little afraid of me and my doggie pals and it is healthy to be cautious around unfamiliar dogs, so here are a few dos and don’ts for parents and children. 1. Do teach children to treat all animals with respect. Be kind and remember that animals communicate in different ways. 2. Don’t approach an unfamiliar dog who is on their own. Wait until the owner is there and then 19ask if it is OK to say hello. 3.
Do let a dog approach you and offer your hand for a dog to sniff before petting them. Watch for any signs that they do not want to be petted and respect this.
4. Don’t make any sudden movements or loud noises. School is a busy time and a bit overwhelming. Speak in a calm voice. 5.
Do pet correctly. Try stroking under the chin or on the sides of the dog.
6.
Don’t stand over a dog or look directly in his eyes. This can be threatening.
7.
Don’t approach a dog if you are eating and put toys away.

fiveways Welcome to the September edition of Fiveways Gardens...
IN THE GARDEN – SEPTEMBER 2016 I’ve got a couple of clients that are going to be growing apples and pears for the first time so I thought I’d share some thoughts on this. More of us are interested in growing at least some of our food, and I think trained fruit on a wall is a superb way of doing it because 1) it looks great 2) it’s easy-ish (there are great videos on YouTube that show you how to prune) 3) it doesn’t take up much room and 4) it’s good for the soul. There’s the traditional espalier method, where branches are trained at right angles to the main stem, for that clas21 sic walled garden look. Alternatively, a good way of getting several different varieties on the go in a small space is to go for cordons. The key to success, as is so often the case, is planning and preparation. I know it sounds boring, but choosing the right varieties, and getting the wires in place to train them, means it’s pretty plain sailing thereafter. Lots of clients over the years have either inherited a fruit tree or bought one on a whim without tasting the fruit and then been disappointed. There will be apple and pear tasting events going on in October at Brogdale in Kent, Ken Muir’s near Clacton, West Dean garden near Chichester and probably Middle Farm. Locally, check out our own Brighton permaculture folk, as they usually have events running at Stanmer Park. So get out there, eat some fruit and get inspired to grow your own. Of course, you could try something a little more exotic like nectarines or peaches that can also be grown successfully on a warm wall. Planting this autumn means you should be eating your first crop next summer. There are different ways of supporting the plants against the wall, ranging from cool stainless steel through to the more “sea-sidey” looking sisal, manila or hempex ropes and twines. Growing fruit against a wall will give you

beautiful blossom in the spring, fruit in late summer or autumn and structure in the winter garden. Finally, for those of you that can’t resist a bargain, it’s worth nosing around garden centres and nurseries for the herbaceous plants that are now way past their best. Garden centres will want them out of the way to make room for the autumn stock coming in. Although they look rubbish now, get them planted in the autumn and you’ll have some fab, strong plants to delight you next year that will have been a bargain. Best wishes, Lisa

fiveways New local nursery, Charley Barley’s...
NEW NURSERY...CHARLEY BARLEY’S Owning our own nursery has been a dream for my sister and me for as long as we can remember and now, after years of searching and an extraordinary amount of help, our dream has become a reality in the form of Charley Barley’s. We feel we make the perfect team and plan on being extremely hands on, with Cassie having a business degree and strong administrative skills and myself benefitting from 12 years working in and managing nurseries around Brighton & Hove. Over the course of my career, I’ve had the pleasure of working within some fantastic nurseries and it’s this experience that has hopefully allowed me to combine all their best qualities into our new nursery. Whilst we’ll strive to become a successful business, our passion is the children, and their learning and wellbeing 23 that will always be paramount to us. We strongly believe a ‘home away from home’ environment is key, and feel children learn best in friendly and secure surroundings. To achieve this we will only be employing the highest quality of staff who will be trained constantly to maintain this. We believe that children have a voice and learn through exploring the environment and materials around them. Charley Barley’s will give the children opportunity to do so, by providing a range of activities and day to day routines. We’ve invested heavily in both our indoor and outdoor spaces and both have been designed to have a
bright and airy feel, ensuring the children feel confident to explore all areas provided. We very much hope to build a positive relationship within the community around us and will be looking to build a solid reputation for excellence, backed up by a future OFSTED outstanding rating. We are looking forward to meeting all the children and families that are looking to join us here at Charley Barley’s.

fiveways Look out for a Snowdog near you...
SNOWDOGS BY THE SEA HIT THE STREETS OF BRIGHTON & HOVE Snowdogs by the Sea, an extraordinary public art trail, will hit the city streets for nine weeks in September (24 September - 27 November). The magical sculpture trail will feature around 46 giant Snowdogs, inspired by the much-loved animated short film, The Snowman™ and The Snowdog, based on the book by Raymond Briggs. Each Snowdog will be individually decorated by different artists and generously sponsored by local 25 businesses. The giant Snowdogs will be joined by a pack of Snowdog puppy sculptures designed by local schoolchildren. Locations are likely to include Preston Park, the Duke of York’s Picturehouse and The Level. The trail is being organised by the Martlets Hospice in conjunction with Wild in Art, following in the footsteps of similar projects run by Wild in Art in other cities, such as Gromit Unleashed in Bristol. At the end of the event each Snowdog will be auctioned to raise funds for the hospice. Snowdogs by the Sea is
expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors to Brighton and Hove in the autumn. Imelda Glackin, Martlets Hospice CEO, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support of local businesses, artists, community groups and schools who have all come together to enable us to create this unique trail. What is wonderful about this project is that, as well as being a brilliant, free event, which everyone can enjoy, it will also raise vital funds for Martlets so that we can support and care for more people who need hospice care.” Many artists have drawn inspiration for their designs from Brighton & Hove’s history, seafront location and iconic architecture. DJ Norman Cook has commissioned well known street artist Ryca to create his Snowdog at the Big Beach Café, whilst crime author Peter James is likely to have a police-themed Snowdog. Schoolchildren have been busy coming up with their own designs for their snow puppies, which will join the trail and be on show at Brighton Museum, Hove Museum and the Jubilee Library throughout the event. Organisers also hope to run a farewell event in December, bringing all the Snowdogs together for a final extravaganza. There will be a trail map on the website and an app to download. The map will also be available at outlets such as libraries across the city.

Bake at 180C for around an hour, until a skewer inserted in the cake comes out clean. If the top of the cake starts to brown and the inside is not cooked, place a piece of foil over the tin to prevent further browning whilst the inside is cooking.
• Kitchens & Bathrooms • Plumbing & Carpentry • Plastering & Tiling The crumble topping is not essential – you can add all the fruit to the cake and skip the crumble altogether if you •I think Painting &nutty Decorating like – but it adds another autumnal element to this delicious teatime treat. Allow to cool for a few minutes before removing from the tin and cooling on a wire rack. Serve warm as a dessert with cream or custard, or cooled and sliced. It makes a perfect back-to-school treat in a school lunch box!

fiveways News from Coachwerks....
COACHWERKS WHOLEFOODS We might be small and tucked away in a corner, but our shop is crammed full of tasty, healthy foods, arts and crafts, green toiletries and household products. Every day more people find us, who have heard rumours of a wholefood shop in Coachwerks, or have attended one of the many events that happen in this vibrant arts and community space. Word is spreading... At Coachwerks Wholefoods, ethics are central to everything we do. We care about the environment, sustainability, community and social justice. We’re careful about what we put on our shelves, stocking products that are organic, fairtrade, local and sustainable. The shop is run by EarthSea Workers’ Co-operative: there are 31 no bosses, we work together to run the shop and support other co-operatives. The shop stocks a wide range of wholesome foods, including artisan bread from Flint Owl Bakery, local organic fruit and vegetables, chilled foods and loose herbs and spices. We believe good quality food should be affordable and shouldn’t cost the earth and so we specialise in ‘Scoop & Weigh’ wholefoods. We buy delicious organic nuts, seeds, grains, cereals, pulses and dried fruits in bulk, which is cheaper than buying these pre-packed,
and then pass these savings on to our customers. As we want to reduce waste, we give a 2% discount to ‘Scoop & Weigh’ customers who bring in their own bags or containers. People are really keen on this: every day customers bring in weird and wonderful containers for us to fill... Another great thing about ‘Scoop & Weigh’ is that you can buy a little or a lot...as much as you want. We also stock natural, ethical toiletries and household products that don’t harm the environment. We sell many of these as ‘Refills’, so if you bring in a bottle, any bottle, we’ll happily fill it up. You’ll be reducing waste and saving money too! Coachwerks is a special place and we are lucky to share it with Bartleby’s vegan micro-brewery, Hail Seitan Vegan Café and all of the amazing makers and artists who have studios here. We sell beautiful things made in Coachwerks, as well as Bartleby’s craft ales in reusable bottles. If you’ve not been here already, come in and check us out. We are open Tuesday through Saturday (Tues, Thurs & Sat: 9 to 5, Wed & Fri: 10-6). Check out our website (earthseacoop.com) and Facebook (Coachwerks Wholefoods). fiveways directory September 2016

LOCAL PAINTER AND DECORATOR – BRUCE MURRAY Bruce Murray lives in Chester Terrace and runs a painting and decorating business. How long have you lived in Brighton? I came to Brighton in 1976 and have lived in the Fiveways area for over 25 years.
Bruce painted this house in Ditchling Road in May...
What do you like most about Fiveways? I love the variety of Fiveways, and I feel very lucky to live in the area. There’s so much going for it: good shops, parks, schools and only a short hop away from a vibrant city centre. My children are certainly very happy that I moved to the area! How did you get into painting and decorating? 37 I started out 35 years ago making furniture from reclaimed timber. This led to me hand-painting kitchens, where I had to apply specialist finishes to the wood. I really enjoyed this aspect of the work so I decided to pursue painting and decorating. What is the best part of your job? Solving problems for customers is really rewarding – and you can often save them money, too. For example, with the right products, you can often repair rotten

windows and sills without the expense of replacing them. So it’s important to keep up to date with developments in decorating materials so that you can do the best job possible. But the thing I like the most is the people. Over the years, I’ve met some really interesting people, and I’m very happy to say that some of them have become customers of mine for many years. Tell us more about your business… I get involved in a range of different projects, both interior and exterior, depending on what the customer needs. More complex jobs mean that I use my contacts in other trades to get the right solution – this can take away some of the hassle from my customers. But I’m equally happy with very simple jobs – the variety is what appeals to me. But as much as anything else, the success of my business is down to some basic values which I stick to: being trustworthy, reliable and doing the best job I can. If you’d like some advice about a job, you can contact me by phone on 07957 186384, or by email at bruce@mehetabel.co.uk. I’d be very happy to talk to you. fiveways directory September 2016

fiveways Here’s some great recycling advice from a fellow Fiveways resident...
RECYCLE MILK BOTTLE TOPS AND RAISE MONEY FOR CHARITY Readers of my kind of age (50), may remember as children collecting the silver foil milk bottle tops for “Guide Dogs for the Blind”. So I RECYCLE this plea some almost 50 years on, not for the silver foil tops but for the plastic milk bottle tops on the plastic bottles of milk from the supermarket. There is a recycling system available at the Green Centre in East Brighton with more information at: http://www.thegreencentre.co.uk/get-involved/green-az/m/milk-bottle-tops-(plastic)-in-brighton.aspx As a materials and manufacturing specialist and teacher, I tend to forget that it isn’t so obvious that “plastic” is a family name of zillions of different “plastics” and that it is the very adaptability of plastic materials that enables us to do so many things with them. As a teacher, when I asked the kids where plastics came from, I was rather too often astonished to find they didn’t have a clue and had to be guided to the answer… OIL. As I wander around Fiveways and Preston Park, I often see milk containers with their tops on, people neatly putting them together when in fact the bottles (blown like glass) are what is called PET 1 and collected by Brighton & Hove Council Recycling, BUT… the lids are injection moulded and, in the case of these plastic milk containers, the lids are ALWAYS made in PET 2. That knowledge makes them very recyclable (as well as any lids that are clearly marked PET 2 or PET 4). (I also notice people very tidily re-apply metal tops to glass bottles; it is funny how automatic that is, but of course in recycling terms not quite right as the metal tops should go in the metals bin, with steel easily separated from aluminium with magnets.) So, we can feel good three ways: as well as not mixing up the plastics for the main recycling, and as well as making sure they go back into making new products, it is also possible to raise funds for LUPUS UK, the charity for supporting those who suffer from lupus. I am often
walking around Fiveways so I will see them if they are in a separate dish or feel free to drop them at my house at the top of Chester Terrace (corner with Preston Drove) at the house with rainwater harvesting and recycling strongly in evidence at the front. Local schools would be able to collect LOADS! Clare B Dimyon, Eco-Engineer/Teacher I can be contacted on Evastanford@outlook.com

fiveways Our regular book review from Gary Mepsted...
THE HANGING CLUB BY TONY PARSONS HARDBACK, CENTURY, £12.99 I’m in something of a quandary this month. My personal remit is to steer you, dear reader, in the direction of those books which deserve your attention, thus my reviews are rarely, if ever, critical. This piece, however, deviates from the norm in that I have little to say which is positive. I shall press on regardless. The novel under scrutiny, The Hanging Club, exemplifies much of what is wrong with modern British crime writing. Many ‘straight’ novelists have turned to crime - in the writing sense - in recent years, perhaps attracted by the prospect of higher sales and an increased public profile, and possibly by the thought that it’s money for jam 41 after slogging away at literary fiction with all its artistic difficulties and problems. Tony Parsons has crossed over with no small measure of success. The Hanging Club, his third Max Wolfe novel, appeared recently. The set-up is seductive enough. Justice is dispensed by a band of vigilante executioners on those who’ve failed to be punished by the legal system. The major problem for me, the slack, repetitive, clichéd, over-explanatory prose aside, is how something containing so much meat ends up being so flavourless and unsatisfying. Parsons proves conclusively that there’s much more to writing successful crime fiction than might be apparent from reading/studying it. There’s a tedious this happened and this happened and then this happened feel to the novel which makes it difficult to get excited about. The poorly executed denouement prompted an ‘Are you kidding me!’ from your frustrated reviewer. Actually, my response contained an extra word. So plotting, at least in this novel, does not appear to be Parsons’ forte. I’ve lost count of the number of crime novels I’ve read recently whose ‘mechanics’ would make Christie weep. Okay, so Parsons probably never intended to be quite as hardcore as Christie with regard to structure and plotting, the planting of clues and the deployment of shoals of red herrings, but the way in which The Hanging Club plays out
is pretty underwhelming and strains the reader’s credulity to breaking point. What the book proves, though, is how durable and resilient the crime genre is. Fans seem willing to accept all kinds of poor workmanship to get their fix. They would be much better catered for were they to explore those crime novels written in the 30s, 40s and 50s. I’d recommend they start with The Hollow Man by John Dickson Carr.

fiveways Regular fitness advice from local personal trainer Marianne Clark...
WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE ON A SPORTING CHALLENGE If you are a regular reader of this feature you will by now be aware that I am someone who enjoys taking on a physical challenge now and again. You may also have deduced that I like to encourage others to do the same. If our paths have ever crossed directly, you may already have succumbed to my powers of persuasion and, with some trepidation, signed yourself up for a sporting challenge that you’re far from certain you can complete!! When I talk about “enjoyment” of a physical challenge, I use the word loosely as it can be the case that the satisfaction comes only after the event, from its completion. Very often, maybe because of my predilection for endurance sports, the training and the event itself can be gruelling, both physically and mentally. But, however tough it may be along the way, achieving something that you have had to work really hard for is an immensely 43 satisfying and enriching experience that will bring benefits way beyond simply improved physical fitness. So why should you take on a challenge? •
