Welcome to the April Edition of the Hanover Directory

With the evenings stretching out and the temperatures rising things are definitely feeling a bit more optimistic these days and in the spirit of getting out and about we have plenty of local events featured this month. There are lots going on in April at the fantastic new Open Market; we also feature an art competition, the Brighton marathon and an article about activities that older people can get involved in. There is music going on at St. Luke’s , a world renowned wildlife photography exhibition and if you were inspired by St. Patrick’s day in March there is Ceilidh going on at the Hanover Centre. If you want to get involved with local issues you can attend the next meeting of the Local Action Team and for wider environmental issues the Hanover Action for Sustainable Living has plenty going on... So no excuses not to get out of the house!! Have a great April!!

There is plenty going on at The Open Market in April. Here is a summary...

April at Brighton Open Market

In April we welcome to the market Vivienne Westwood’s “We are the revolution” tour. The iconic fashion designer has become a campaigner for sustainable energy and climate revolution, and we are excited to be welcoming her to the market plaza. She has planned a day of events with the local community, featuring a fashion show for up-cycled and ethically sourced garments from local makers and students, a screen printing workshop run by local streetwear label Pear Shaped Apparel, talks from local MP Caroline Lucas, and a whole host of stalls that will transform the market into a revolutionary community power for the day.

Part of the objective for the event is encouraging people to vote, and there will be non party-specific workshops and information available for those who are either unsure about voting, or simply don’t know how to go about it. With the general election just around the corner, this could be the perfect chance for people to get clued up. The event will take place on Wednesday 15th April, from 10am through to 6pm. In a change to our regular listings, the second Sunday of the month is set to become a celebration of all things vintage and antique. The Brighton Vintage and Antiques Market (BVAM) opens its doors on 12th April and will take over the plaza with over 40 stall holders from all over Brighton, Lewes and London. It promises to have everything from vintage clothing to military memorabilia, jewellery to antique furniture. On April 25th, Breaking Bread celebrates the end of National Bread Week. This unique project brings together Brighton’s past, present and future breadbaking traditions to create and record a public collective memory, ways to encourage the everyday act of making bread in the home again, and enabling people to connect through the physical act of breaking bread

together. Forming a final event in a wider project in Brighton and Hove, this is an open day drop-in to participate in the making of a freshly-baked largescale communal bread, broken and shared with visitors to the event. The event will also host a variety of talks, workshops, an exhibition, tasting and more. Finally, on April 26th the Open Market holds its first book fair, and welcomes booksellers from all over Sussex to join us at the market for the day. We are hosting a few extra special events this year:

To complement this year’s Hanover Artists Open Houses, the trail organisers have set up a competition open to local children, where two lucky winners will have their work framed and hung in one of the Artists Open Houses on this year’s trail. The competition details are: • The theme is ‘Flight’.

• Open to all children up to 10 years. First category up to 6 years and category two 7-10 years. • The winning entries will be framed and hung in one of our Open House venues for May and then returned to the artists. • The deadline for entries is 15th April.

‘The Big Blue Screening’, 22nd May, a night of short films by local independent film-makers;

‘A Taste of the Mediterranean’, 15th May, pop-up restaurant; and ‘Luna’s Red Hat’ book launch.

For more information on these events, visit us on Facebook at The Blue House – Open House, telephone Megan on 07757 017253 or check out the Hanover Trail’s website at www.hanoverartstrail.org.uk.

Brighton Marathon Sunday 12th April

• Size limit of A3.

The official race starter for this year’s Brighton Marathon is Jo Pavey, the women’s 10,000m gold medal winner from last year’s European Championships.

Good luck!

She will be at the Mass Start in Preston Park at 9.15am. The elite runners will start in Withdean Park. There will be a stage in Preston Park throughout the morning, with music and information.

All entries to be handed in to the estate agency Q Sales & Lettings, 195 Lewes Road, labelled on the back with name, age and contact details.

The Blue House Open House

“The Blue House - Open House” is part of this year’s delight-filled Hanover Trail. If you paid us a visit last year, you will know that you are in for a treat.

The race ends at Madeira Drive, with the elite runners expected to finish at around 11.25am. There will be a Beach Village adjacent to the finish line, with bars, food and giant screens. Visit www.brightonmarathon.co.uk for more information and live updates on the race.

This year The Blue House will be offering an eclectic mix of art, design, craft, film and illustration from a collection of local artists. We will also be welcoming back, for that extra bit of tasty jolliness, our very own in-house licensed Blue Bohème Bar and Connie’s Kitschen.

hanover Your regular update for Hanover Action for Sustainable Living... • Redesigning our community spaces to be more Anti-Fracking Victory as Firm inclusive and welcoming, particularly of our Withdraws from two Sites in West Sussex younger and older residents?

Celtique Energie’s decision not to pursue planning applications at two sites in West Sussex has been welcomed by Friends of the Earth.

The company will not be going ahead with appeals against the refusal of planning permissions for drilling at Fernhurst and Wisborough Green.

Friends of the Earth campaigner Brenda Pollack said: “This is a tremendous victory for common sense, and another blow to the Coalition’s short-sighted fracking plans. The withdrawal of their appeal at Wisborough Green was completely unexpected. The South Downs National Park Authority and West Sussex Council were right to reject these schemes and we hope that other companies take note.” It is wonderful news for local people who do not want dirty drilling affecting their communities. Celtique Energie still have permission to drill at a site near Billingshurst and work has already started there with drilling expected any week.

Do You Have a Vision of The Future For Hanover and Elm Grove?

What kind of a community do you want to live in? What can we achieve together?

• Increased engagement with democracy – more ‘people power’? • Growing more of our food? • Sharing our skills and resources? • Decreasing our reliance on cars? • Reducing our energy use?

• Affordable good housing? • Developing green spaces in and around our streets? • More pre-cycling and recycling? • More shared culture and leisure facilities?

What’s your vision of a more sustainable future? Come share it in friendly and open discussion with Hanover Action for Sustainable Living and our welcome guests Dan Jellinek (local author of People Power, a User’s Guide to Democracy) and ward election candidates David Gibson, Dick Page and Holly Wharam-Moscrop (Green) and Emma Daniel and Ivor Fried (Labour). Friday 24 April 7.30pm upstairs at the Hanover Community Centre, 33 Southover Street. ALL welcome. Next HASL film:

“The Wisdom to Survive Climate Change, Capitalism and Community”

Wed 14th April 2015 at 8pm, function room, The Hanover pub, Queen’s Park Road

This film accepts the consensus of scientists that climate change has already arrived, and asks— what is keeping us from action? In discussions with thought leaders and activists, we explore how unlimited growth and greed are destroying the life support system of the planet, the social fabric of society, and the lives of billions of people.

hanover Another local event happening in April...

The latest regular feature from Wine Woman....

Music and Wine at St Luke’s

Wine and Food Matching Some Basic Tips

On Friday 10th April pianist Stephen Gutman will present a celebration of the wonderful music written for the keyboard by French composers up to music of our own time.

The programme will follow connections through gorgeous works by Rameau, Debussy, Chabrier, and Ravel’s “À la manière de d’Emmanuel Chabrier”, “Pavane pour une infante défunte” and “Jeux d’eau”. Two weeks later on 24th April, guitarist Sam Brown returns to Music and Wine at St Luke’s to present music from the Italian Renaissance to the present day, from Spain, from the operatic stage, and from the inside of a guitar. All concerts take place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, Brighton BN2 9ZB at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7 / £5 concessions / £3 under-12s. Tickets are available on the door. Disabled access. Wine and refreshments served. For more information, visit www.stlukesconcerts.webeden.co.uk To donate or volunteer or get involved with Music and Wine at St Luke’s, or for a copy of our brochure, please email musicandwineatstlukes@gmail.com or phone 510595. You can also join our mailing list to be kept informed of the most up-to-date concert information.

‘I drink to make other people more interesting,’ said Hemingway. Whilst guests don’t come with guarantees, wine should be less of a gamble, whether it be a formal dinner party or (if you are from Notting Hill) an on-trend ‘kitchen supper’. Classic Chablis flatters most seafood but Albarino or Vinho Verde partner equally well. Patés demand a more robust wine, perhaps a Rhone, though try serving with a cold golden sweet wine to flash your French know-how. Typically, what grows with it goes with it: rustic Italian reds with robust pasta, Burgundy with coq au vin, or lighter Rioja (Joven not Reserva) with paella. Curries are challenging but Riesling and the distinctive Gewürztraminer are good matches for complex spicing. The traditional port and Stilton marriage is the exception that proves the rule. In general most cheeses, especially the more acidic, are better suited to white or sweet wines, with only the hard stronger cheddar styles able to stand up to the tannic reds usually served. For desserts, in short, ensure the wine is sweeter than the dessert; reverse this and your wine will taste flat and bitter. Nothing will compensate for lacklustre guests of course, but at least your wines will sparkle. Charlotte Marples: cemarples@gmail.com

“OUTSTANDING”...OFSTED ‘OUTSTANDING OFSTED’ ‘OUTSTANDING OFSTED’

Chas Hunt, a founder member of Hanover Community Association, died in February, a few weeks short of his 84th birthday. Chas was a brilliant role model for us all, and way ahead of his time – in the 1970s he was a forty-something single father raising his daughters alone after their mother’s death, yet still finding the time and energy to help his local neighbourhood keep its unique identity and community spirit.

Chas lived in Cobden Road, and was one of the local people with the vision to take on the challenge of converting a disused boys’ school into a community centre. Along with other skilled volunteers, he gave much of his skill and expertise to work on the building, as well as undertaking the committee work needed to establish and maintain the charity that would manage our “village hall”. That group of dedicated pioneers sowed the seeds that have given us the thriving community centre we have today, keeping the heart in Hanover. We all have a lot to thank Chas and his contemporaries for. Many of us know Chas as a fully qualified ‘Harvey Hopper’ who was happy to take on the role of “ales expert” at several of our Annual Hanover Beer Festivals. He will also be fondly remembered for his participation in a number of Festive Fairs held at the community centre, where he personally arranged for his good friend Santa Claus to visit the children of Hanover. He was a lovely man, and will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. Pet First Aid Course

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue

You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.

The Reality

The Law (C.R.A.G - charging for residential accommodation guide) allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £800 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for.

The Solution

For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two Trusts within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, prevent your home from being taken into account by the local authority altogether should you ever require care in the future.

The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as Trust beneficiaries for that particular Trust will subsequently have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy the survivor is protected from having to sell the property to pay for their care should they need it because it is not possible to sell just their half of the property and the Crag guidelines clearly state that the market value of half a property is £0. The second half of the property will then ultimately go into Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. The beneficiaries will at that stage have both halves safe and secure in Trust and will be able to share and dispose of the property according to the wishes of the settlors (the original owners of both halves). By leaving 1/2 the property into Trust on first death, the surviving partner can still sell the property to downsize if they wish and are not restricted in any way with regards to what they wish to do to or with the property - it simply means that it is safeguarded and therefore will definitely be able to be appointed to the chosen beneficiaries when the time comes. For sole owners immediately conveying at least half of your property into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and becoming a Trustee and primary beneficiary of the Trust with others nominated to become beneficiaries after your death is usually enough to take away the risk of the property being considered as an asset to be sold if care is required as the property is not absolutely owned by yourself anymore and again it is not possible to sell half a house or force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about how this strategy could be of real benefit to you and your family.

For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey at least 1/2 of your property into it which will produce the same result.

The Reasoning

When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. When the first partner dies, they leave their half into their trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the primary beneficiary which means that they have complete control over the property and what happens to it.

Spring into action with CSV LifeLines

Would you like to do something different, take up a new hobby or volunteer to help older people be more active? Then come and join us at LifeLines. We run a programme of free activities ranging from art classes to tea dances and Tai Chi. We also help people with basic IT and our Activity Partner scheme helps people who feel isolated get out and about. Most of our activities are based at Patching Lodge in the Queen’s Park area. Three exciting new activities starting this spring are: • • •

Celebrate Your Life (in writing) - monthly writing workshops with Mary Deacon Basic cookery for men with Clive Goodwin Talking About Loss with Eve Miller.

Here are a few words about why Eve decided to volunteer with LifeLines and why talking about loss is so important.

“I decided to offer my services as a volunteer group facilitator with the theme of loss, in all its many forms, eg loss of a person, pet, job etc.

I have worked for many years as a grief counsellor, helping families going through loss. I also worked at a funeral directors and experienced the many faces of grief. “We all experience loss and the different reactions this can cause. These reactions can be bewildering, frightening, depressing and anxietyprovoking, and sometimes we doubt that we will ever get through this.

“One of the main experiences of a grief reaction can be isolation. A loss group is a way of getting people together to hear each other, and experience the comfort gained by hearing that others are trying to cope with similar reactions to loss.” If you would like to join a group, volunteer or find out more about any of our activities, please call Alan or Gwyn at LifeLines on 01273 688117, email lifelines@csv.org.uk or visit www.LifeLinesbrightonhove.org.uk

hanover The latest in the musings of Hanover Dad...

Hanover Dad... Time Flies When you’re Having Fun

When you’re a new parent, people peer into your buggy and say things like, “Enjoy them now, because they grow up very fast.” It never really means anything to you at the time when you have a little baby. You just nod and smile and lie and say, “Yes, I agree,” but actually you curse under your breath, because you’re insane with sleep deprivation and covered in milky sick, and in your head shout, “I can’t wait until they grow up, then I’ll get my own back! When they’re teenagers, I’ll wake them up at 5:15am every day and I’ll make sure they pay for everything I want – then they’ll know!” It’s interesting though, because time has gone by, and now my two tiny babies are nine and five and they’ve gone from being gurgling little poo machines to real little people with personalities, opinions and a desire for independence. Let me give you an example: my son has decided that whenever he is in public he will only call me Steve. The only reason he does this is because he knows I don’t like it. This is a decision he has made himself - which clearly bodes well for the future and is a testament to my wife and I’s parenting skills.

Another example is that my daughter has decided that she wants to make her own breakfast every day. This is fine by me as she needs a level of independence, plus she usually has cereal - the worst that can happen is a bit of spilled milk, and there’s no point crying over that. Last weekend though she said she wanted to make me breakfast in bed and was going to make me some toast. Off she went and 35 minutes later she returned with my toast. Admittedly it was freezing cold and strangely covered in hair, but I was still proud of her. I ate it anyway, and it was better than a few things the wife has made me before (only joking, honey). What I have learned is that these little opinions and forays into independence are all part of them growing up, of them becoming individuals. So I guess those people were right they are growing up very fast, and I will make sure I enjoy it all. Tell you what, though - I’m still getting them up at 5:15am when they’re teenagers – well, maybe only once. Steve Rust

There are some great businesses in Hanover. Here we feature one of them...

Hanover Business...Milly’s Day Care

Milly’s Day Care is a local dog walking company managed by Hanover resident Melanie Goulden. As well as having many customers in the Hanover area, Milly’s Day Care also operates across the whole of Brighton and Hove. As well as offering dog walking, they also offer a pet feeding service, a pet taxi service and, for their dog walking clients, a special home boarding service. Melanie has her own beloved beagle, Milly, who she has raised since a puppy. Milly loves going out for long walks and playing with other dogs so finds her owner’s occupation very satisfying. Milly’s Day Care are focused on providing you with the peace of mind that your pet is looked after, stimulated and gets the exercise and attention they need when they are in their care. Their specially fitted out dog-walking van ensures your pet travels in safety and comfort. Dogs are always walked in safe environments away from traffic and other disturbances. Usual locations include Devil’s Dyke, Wild Park, Stanmer Woods and Sheepcote Valley. The professional dog walkers’ code of conduct was set up by Brighton and Hove City Council in November 2009 as a direct result of the increased numbers

Here we bring you the latest news from the Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team...

Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team Update on local matters affecting you...

Our community plan for parking and street improvements gets thumbs up at meetings with the council. The community proposal for a medium touch parking scheme along with street design improvements has received a big boost in March. In meetings with council officers, Chris Taylor and Councillor Emma Daniel and Cllr Gill Mitchell (Labour transport spokesperson), David Gibson and Councillors Bill Randall and Ian Davey (Green transport lead) had a positive reaction to the proposals for a new type of controlled parking better tailored to our needs in Hanover (dubbed a “medium touch”). The key thing is that the council officers and key councillors have agreed to the principle of supporting a completely new type of parking and street improvement based on what the community identifies. Some people feared that the council wouldn’t listen but they have!! The council will provide officers to work with representatives to

devise the best possible plan starting from the proposals we have come up with.

With the Greens and Labour both in support of the community-led approach, it looks likely that, after the election, there will be the necessary support to produce a comprehensive proposal.

This proposal will go through a formal public consultation much later this year and, at that stage, it will be up to residents to look at the detail of the plan and make a final decision for or against. To move the proposals forward, the HEG LAT has asked for a meeting between representatives of the working group and council officers to look at the proposals in more detail at the end of March (which should have taken place by the time you read this!)

There is still a long way to go, and especially for the areas north of Elm Grove, on the Queen’s Park estate (Pankhurst Avenue area) and in the triangle bounded by Carlyle Street, Queen’s Park Road and Elm Grove, which in the previous surveys do not support controlled parking. Some surveying has started north of Elm Grove and, having spoken to businesses, there is a suggestion that a light touch zone with parking restrictions two hours a day would be better suited for that area. However it is very early days. If anyone can help with surveying in the “triangle” or on the Queen’s Park estate, please contact Chris Taylor greysland@sky.com and David Gibson davidsg@ntlworld.com. Next HEG LAT Meeting

This will be held at 7pm on Monday 13th April at The Hanover pub, Queen’s Park Road. There will be an update on the community plan for parking and street improvements. All are welcome.
