hanover Welcome to The Hanover Directory
It’s holiday time for many of us in August, so we hope you have plenty of time to read your copy of The Hanover Directory. This month we feature another of the two new councillors for Hanover & Elm Grove, Steph Powell, who tells us a bit more about herself. We hear from Sophie Powell and Annie Brooks who run local business PuppetBox, and Hanover Action explain why we might see wild flowers popping up along our streets. The Hanover Community Association also bring us news on preparations for this year’s Hanover Beer Festival. Many thanks to Lisa Holdcroft for her fabulous front cover. Have a relaxing August! hanover hanover An interview with a new local councillor...
Meet Councillor Steph Powell... Steph Powell was elected in May as a Green Party councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove. Do you live in the Hanover area?
A few years back I moved out of Brighton as I needed to be near my mother, who was very ill at the time. My dear mum has since died, and with her went the only close family I had. I used to live in East Brighton, and then on the Queens Park/Hanover boarder. I have always worked in the city, and still do.
I’ve always loved Hanover and Elm Grove. It is a vibrant place – almost like a village within the city. It has all that I love: great pubs, local independent retailers, and a beautiful cat on almost every street. I feel very proud to represent such an engaging part of the city. Tell us about your background...
I am 47. I am a cis-gender, gay woman. I have been with my partner Maria for 8 years now. I have lived in the city 2004-16, and am originally from London. My parents divorced when I was 5. My mum (who was an older mum, and a polio survivor) brought me up on her own. Finances were always so hard. As such, I was a young carer, and indeed a carer up until her death. But I was encouraged very much with my education, and I was the first in my family to go to university. I guess this experience has moulded me. I have worked in frontline services now in the city for the past 10 years. There is an old Chinese proverb which I tend to stick by which says: “be a person of value, rather than one of success”. What made you want to become a councillor?
In 2009, I was working for the council for Connexions. It was a great service that worked in particular with very vulnerable young people, to empower them into work and education. It was the first service to be cut by the incoming Tory government. I became very vocal in the campaign. I challenged Prime Minster Cameron at an event in Hove Town Hall, and it got me in the local paper. Before I knew it, the Green Party had been in touch, and I was attending Green Party events. I was asked to be a candidate for Queens Park in 2011, and I never looked back. 2011-2015 were amazing years on the council, but I lost my seat in 2015, which was a bitter blow to me at the time. But now I am back, and I’m elated to be so.
What do you hope to achieve in Hanover?
The Brighton General Hospital campaign has really picked up. This is a campaign I’m passionate about, as I strongly believe in (real) affordable housing. I’m also challenging with officers the state of the old Lee’s Chinese take-away site on Lewes Road. It’s deplorable, because this is a prime space that could be put to better use! It’s also an eyesore. I want to continue to be a strong voice on casework for residents. I cannot sort all the queries out how people will want, but I’ll try! Most importantly, I want to hear people’s views on proposals. What are your interests outside politics?
So many which I have little time for these days: novels - particularly ones with a historical theme. I love being outdoors and I am passionate about wildlife conservation. I adore cats. Music plays a big part in my life and I love going to the theatre. I’m a very sociable and fun individual.

hanover hanover A great way to raise money for Martlets hospice...
Join KAPOW - Martlets 5k Inflatable Fun Run
Martlets are calling for local people to join in the fun at their KAPOW! event – a superhero-themed 5k inflatable obstacle course - taking place at 11am in Preston Park on Saturday 14 September.
Fun runners are encouraged to dress up as their favourite superhero and tackle a course of ten huge inflatables - enter as a team or take on a personal challenge – there will be lots of super-friends to meet on the way. Everyone taking part will be doing their bit to be a fundraising superhero for Martlets, helping to make a positive difference to lives of people needing hospice care in the Brighton and Hove area.
KAPOW! is a family-friendly event – anyone over 1.2 m can join in the fun – accompanied by a paying adult. Mum of two Katharine Spalding took part last year and commented: “I tackled the KAPOW! course last year with my two children, Joshie and Maisie, and we had such brilliant fun together – from planning our superhero outfits to climbing up and then jumping down huge inflatables, it was a laugh from start to finish! I would one hundred per cent recommend it to anyone. You’ll be smiling for days afterwards and it’s all to support a fantastic local charity.” To join in, sign up at www.themartlets.org.uk/kapow19 or call 01273 747 455.
News from the council...
New water fountains for the city
On 11th July Brighton & Hove City Council’s Policy, Resources and Growth Committee approved plans to install drinking-water fountains and bottle-filling points in six high-footfall areas of the city as a threeyear trial. No fountains are planned for the Hanover area at present, but fountains will be located in Queen’s Road, Churchill Square, above Shelter Hall and in front of the Palace Pier, as well as two in Hove. If the trial is a success, more fountains may be introduced in other areas. The council says the benefits of fountains would include: to help prevent plastic pollution; encourage healthy hydration; provide an alternative to sugary drinks; decrease litter; support low income people; reduce carbon footprint; and provide access to water for homeless people.

hanover hanover There’s a celebration this month at The Wellington in Elm Grove...
News from the council...
The Wellington celebrates 25 years
New bins for the seafront...
STEVE & NADIA are celebrating 25 YEARS behind the helm!
The bins will have three separate sections in different colours, with two that reflect the city’s seafront heritage - Brighton Borough blue for plastic bottles and cans and Hove Borough maroon for glass. The third section will be black for ordinary rubbish.
Saturday night is Party Night with a Hawaiian theme, with prizes for best female and male costumes, various party games and of course good music. Sunday will be an all-day party with BBQ, Blackpowder Morris and raffles.
Monday evening, instead of our usual weekly quiz, we will have a 1994 themed quiz with free entry and prize for the winners. Is this the local you have been looking for? Come give us a try, everyone welcome. Children and dogs are welcome; we have a patio area and plenty of outside seating so you can enjoy the sunshine.
The new bins will replace the present street waste bins. There is already a trial bin on the seafront next to the rebuilt Shelter Hall. Although the bins can take plastic bottles, empty cans, glass or rubbish, they should not be used for barbecue materials as these can create a fire hazard. There are though special barbecue bins along the seafront near the sections of the beach where barbecuing is allowed. It is expected that the first bins will be placed along the central beach area, with the rest being rolled out soon after. If the bins prove successful, they may be used throughout the city.

This month’s column from the local WI...
Hanover Queens WI
No meeting of the Hanover Queens this month – but we’ll meet again on Thursday 12th September. Hanover Queens (Hanover and Queen’s Park) are a small friendly bunch of women with members from all over the city. We meet every second Thursday of the month from 7.30 to 9.30pm. A varied programme of speakers and activities this past year – from Zumba and Alexander Technique to Punch and Judy, a barrister and a local author - and Lynn Ruth, 85, our oldest comedienne, had us entranced for the evening. We actively support and fundraise for Stopover, local organisation for homeless young women, and will also be supporting Small Acts of Friendship – who help improve the lives of older people in the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
Always keen to attract new members so come along on the night or check us out on Facebook or at wihanoverqueens@gmail.com. Recipe of the month Summer slaw
Shred white and red cabbage; add celeriac chopped into matchsticks, finely sliced red onion, grated carrot, quartered radishes. Zocalo Localo!
Well done to those of you who made it out for the Zocalo this year. I had to join the proceedings sometime during the evening but still managed to meet a few new neighbours by wandering the streets with a bowl of strawberries to share. I was met with a warm Hanover welcome, and special thanks go to Fran of Whichelo Place for your enthusiasm! Let’s see if we can coax a few more neighbours out next year…but why wait? Good neighbourliness is something we should encourage all year round.

Hanover Beer Festival – Curious about the Curators?
May we introduce our 2019 Curators of Beer - many of you will know Ali Charlesworth (Brighton Bierhaus) from previous festivals but we also have Rob Hogg (The Old Market) joining us this year. Both Ali and Rob are volunteering their beer expertise and time to bring us a great selection of beers to enjoy. We are also pleased to announce that our Festival Food this year will be provided by The Humble Pie Company. Some of you may remember Alex and Toby feeding us with great pie, mash and peas in previous years. Barrels are being snapped up for sponsorship at £50 a barrel plus discounted tickets and promotion but there
is still time to grab one. hanover Local Hanover people...
Hanover People...Sophie Powell and Annie Brooks Sophie Powell of Lincoln Street and Annie Brooks of Scotland Street run PuppetBox, making puppets for training, teaching and performance. How long have you lived in Hanover? Sophie: I have lived in Hanover since 2007. I grew up in Brighton (not Hanover) but left to study and moved back after I had my first child. Hanover seemed a great place to bring up kids; it has got such a great community. Annie: I have lived in Hanover twice - once in Washington Street as a student and I currently live on Scotland Street, where I have been for the last 4 years. I love the community spirit here, especially on Scotland Street where the street parties are second to none! All of our neighbours are marvellous. How did you come to set up PuppetBox? Sophie: I was asked to run some puppetry workshops and I couldn’t find the type of puppet I wanted to teach with. I wanted something neutral that could take on any story, yet complex enough that it could be used in training up to any level. I had already collaborated with Annie and I knew what a fantastic maker she was, so I approached her. Initially I was just thinking about a set for myself, but it quickly became clear that there was a bigger demand. Since then we have sent puppets all over the place from Hull to Hong Kong. Annie: Sophie approached me about the idea about a year and a half ago and I immediately jumped on board. In the light of theatre shows such as War Horse and Lion King, puppetry is now quite mainstream, so a lot of schools are teaching it on their drama syllabus. Tell us more about the business... PuppetBox make puppets for training, teaching and performing. If you buy a box of puppets it comes with

an education pack. We also run bespoke puppetry workshops and training. What is your favourite puppet that you’ve made? Sophie: The idea for the PuppetBox puppets is that they follow a template, but as they are all handmade there are always little differences. I always get excited when you see a set of six together. Annie: I make lots of different individual puppets outside of this business. As I work to commission, I am usually making one-off designs, of which my favourite is a character called Myrtle, who is a sea cucumber and political activist. What do you like to do when you’re not working? Sophie: Sea swimming, hanging out with friends and family, day dreaming and puppet scheming. Annie: Eating pizza and dancing. Mazda fountain shines again...
The Mazda Electric Fountain in Brighton’s Victoria Gardens, unlit for 30 years, has been lovingly restored by a local lighting business. It was originally given to the city in 1930 by ThomsonHouston Ltd following an exhibition and has stood in Victoria Gardens for nearly 90 years. The fountain used to have lights weaving rainbow colours through jets of water that could reach up to 35 feet (10.6 metres). Using today’s technology, the fountain now has an almost limitless colour palette. It will also be more robust and easier to maintain. The council’s building services team worked with transport officers on the Valley Gardens project and specialist lighting contractor StarTek Lighting to restore the fountain. When the fountain was previously working and lit in the late 1980s, the lighting power consumption was around 27,000W. The new LED lights will use just 340W.
Technical director Jake Sharpstone said: “Over a year ago when I saw on social media that the fountain might be removed from this prime spot I thought something had to be done to try and save it. I realised that as an owner of an LED lighting manufacturing company we could help save it by restoring the lighting.”
Restoration so far has taken a year to complete – next year further work will be done to light up the rim of the fountain. The fountain has a ring of five water spouts with ring jets around them, plus one powerful jet in the middle. All will be lit with additional lights around the rim for maximum effect. In 2015 the fountain was drained as there was no council budget to repair it at the time. Residents petitioned the council to re-instate the fountain but

it was not until 2017 when a second petition was made that the council agreed to restore it as part of the Valley Gardens scheme. StarTek offered to restore the lighting at no cost to the council. The company will be able to use the Mazda fountain to market their business. The council will service and maintain the fountain.
The Mazda fountain is in an area of Victoria Gardens that is currently fenced off for open space improvements as part of the Valley Gardens scheme. It will be in full view when the garden works are complete next spring and when the fountain is formally switched on for the public to enjoy.

Roadworks... Construction works are taking place on the roads, pavements and green spaces that run from St Peter’s Church to Edward Street. This is to support the Valley Gardens project, which will see the creation of a new central public park, direct walking and cycling routes and a simplified road layout in this part of the city.
From mid-August, we will begin the general traffic switch over to the eastern side of Valley Gardens. To manage this transition there will be: • no access to general traffic at York Place
• signed diversion at Marlborough Place and North Road
Bus routes will be operating as normal through the area. We are working with local residents and businesses situated at York Place and in the surrounding area, to ensure they have access during the works.

2525 Our regular article from Hanover Action...
Brighton and Hove goes organic? Not yet but nearly.... Has your street bloomed this summer 2019? Poppies or petunias, purple toadflax or evening primrose have all popped up along gutters, cracks in pavements, around lampposts and parking signs. As part of the local elections the Pesticide Action Network received pledges from nearly every Green and Labour (and a couple of Conservative) council candidates to ban pesticides use. Now every park in Brighton is free from pesticides with no use of glyphosate (Roundup), neonicotinoids, slug pellets or other chemicals. Across streets and pavements, weed killer use is reducing as we can see with the plants that have appeared. Some will think it messy and untidy so sowing seeds of wild flowers, removing the least loved weeds and taking control of your cracks and gaps on public spaces will help our sparrows and bumblebees and improve neighbourly relations. Southern Water and Natural England are working with farmers on the Downs to reduce use and encourage wildlife. What is left are our golf courses, allotments and gardens, ie you and me. Should Brighton, like France, ban domestic use of pesticides and our garden centres remove pesticides from their shelves.......? www.hasl.org
