Welcome to the August Edition of the Hanover Directory

This month we bring you the usual mix of all things Hanover with a new addition. We introduce to you The Gourmet Girls – a group of local ladies who will be touring the local pubs and restaurants each month, both in Hanover and nearby, and writing up a report on what they found.

It is also the month for Zocalo. While last year’s event was slightly hampered by lashing rain, howling winds and an escaped leopard, we’re hoping that this year’s good weather will continue until August 31st for Hanover’s annual neighbour day. It will start at 3pm, so expect the two Davids to be out on the streets with the megaphone midafternoon, encouraging as many of you as possible to take a chair and sit outside and spend a pleasant time with your neighbours. For more information see www.brightonzocalo.com A few more helpers this year are needed. Please email david@cheekyguides.com The Hanover Directory Team info@hanoverdirectory.co.uk www.hanoverdirectory.co.uk

9 Hanover Gourmet Girls Pub Review

The Reservoir

I’d like to introduce you to the Gourmet Girls! We are a group of girls living in Hanover who’ve been friends for between a few years to a whole lifetime. We’re a friendly, dynamic bunch with different backgrounds, jobs and ages. At full strength there are 12 of us and we’re aged between 23 and 55.

Once a month we try to get together locally to have a catchup, eat some good food and have a few drinks. We try to look for good value options. We recently got talking about how it might be fun and maybe useful to review the places we visit. We could share genuine feedback with the good people of Hanover and support local businesses at the same time. So we contacted the Hanover Directory and they said yes and the Gourmet Girls were born. This is our first review! How it works is that we each score three main elements of our evening: food, friendliness of staff and value for money. We award up to five stars for each and then average them out to give the overall Gourmet Girl score!

Sooo, last week 7 of the 12 went for food at the Thai Kitchen, which is at the lovely Reservoir pub on Howard Road. It was a Monday evening, so not the busiest night of the week for anywhere in Hanover, but a good venue nonetheless. The Reservoir is set over two floors with the bar, kitchen and seating upstairs, and sofa seating and more tables downstairs with a patio garden. It’s recommended for its Sussex ales too, although none of us girls are ale drinkers.

All of the food, without exception, was really tasty and excellent value for money. The service was great, food arrived quickly and no mistakes were made on any of the orders. Mark behind the bar was very welcoming and friendly, as were the staff from the Thai Kitchen. Overall we had a lovely evening, so big thanks to the Reservoir - we will see you again soon. Some comments from the girls: “Great food – saucy curries and perfect tofu.” “Very pleasant staff.” “Good food, good pub, good staff.” Scores FOOD: 4**** STAFF: 4 **** ATMOSPHERE 3***

Prices for starters are all £4.95 apart from shared starter platters @ £9.95 and main dishes range from £5.95 to £7.95. Take-away service available but no delivery. http://www.reservoirbrighton.co.uk

The Thai Kitchen is a small open kitchen so you can see your food being cooked whilst you wait. There’s an extensive menu with 48 dishes to choose from, so something to suit everyone. We ordered starters to share: ‘Mair Kim’s Vegetarian Feast’ - spring rolls, vegetable tempura, Thai golden bags, Tofu Satay and vegetable crackers with a peanut and sweet chilli dipping sauce. It went down really well and very quickly, and good value at £9.95 a platter! We then had an array of main dishes including Pad Thai, Tofu stir fry with cashews, Tom Yum soup and Green, Red and Massamam Thai curries.

hanover Hanover person...Hannah Vincent

Hanover resident Hannah Vincent is a writer – here she tells us about her debut novel “Alarm Girl”. You have a book being published in August, right? Can you tell us a little bit about it?

Alarm Girl describes two children visiting their father in South Africa for the first time since the death of their mother. It is partly narrated by eleven-year-old Indy, who is confused as to why no-one will speak about her mother’s death. To fill in the gaps in her knowledge she makes up her own version of the truth… It’s a rites-of-passage story, about a girl learning the truth about her family. You live in Hanover – has our neighbourhood found its way into your novel?

I have lived in Brighton for twenty-five years and I have been writing during all that time but I have never set a play or a story here. I tend to borrow certain elements from different places and create composites. I am interested in place as metaphor. In Alarm Girl, for instance, the foreign-ness of Africa for Indy – its heat, the unfamiliar landscape, her dad’s

new house, the strangers she meets - is expressive of her emotional state. Tell us how you came to be published

We are very lucky in Brighton to have Myriad based here. Everyone agrees they are the nicest publisher ever! They are incredibly supportive of new writers and their reputation as people with good taste who are extremely kind and nurturing means they have writers defecting to them from big London and New York-based publishers. When I completed my novel manuscript I sent it to them and they invited me to come in to their office to have a chat. When they said, ‘We’d love to publish this,’ I nearly fell off my chair. Editing meetings take place over cake in a café around the corner from their office, which for me is about the dreamiest scenario ever. Where can we buy your book?

Kemptown Books, City Books and Waterstones have copies and I am hoping Hanover businesses such as Fanny’s, Archers and Hilly Laine might stock it too… Thanks, Hannah! Alarm Girl is published on 7th August.

hanover The Secret Heart of Hanover

The Church of the Annunciation

To mark its 150th anniversary, the Church of the Annunciation in Washington Street opens its doors to host a festival of art, music and drama. Father Michael Wells, aka Spike Wells, renowned jazz drummer, and Brighton diva Marcia Bellamy, Festival Artistic Director, invite you to discover what is happening at the Annun, the secret heart of Hanover. Adoration of the Shepherds

by the Mafia has greatly increased the value of our copy,” Stephen says. The copy of the painting at the Annunciation dates from the early twentieth century, a gift to the church from an anonymous donor who brought it back from Florence. (It still has the official Uffizi stamp on the back.) It has recently been restored and is now on view at the church as part of the current anniversary exhibition. A Local Saint?

The first vicar of The Annunciation, Father George Chapman, had an enormous impact on the Hanover area. It was his energy that transformed the original

MAFIA helps get the 150th anniversary of the Church of the Annunciation off to an explosive start.

It’s not often the Mafia gets involved in church life in Brighton. But Brighton writer Stephen Plaice, who has written a history of the Annunciation Church in Washington Street to celebrate its 150th anniversary, has discovered that the church possesses one of the few full-scale copies of a famous painting, The Adoration of the Shepherds, by the Dutch artist Gerard van Honthorst, aka Gherardo della Notte. The original of the painting used to hang in the famous Uffizi Gallery in Florence - until 1993, that is, when during a local Mafia feud, one wing of the gallery was bombed, and the painting blown to smithereens. “I think the destruction of the original

whitewashed mission of The Annunciation into the beautiful church it is today. He built up the local congregation to over 300, enabling the creation of the parish of Hanover. A tall, lean figure in his russet and black cassock, he was Father George Chapman often compared to Christ by his parishioners, risking his own health to minister to the sick and to go amongst the poor of the area. Throughout his incumbency, he calmed the sectarian tensions that were prone to break out in the neighbourhood, winning the hearts of local residents with his simple devotional style. Dying prematurely at the age of 44, his funeral procession stopped the traffic on its way to the Lewes Road Cemetery where he was laid to rest in 1891. George Chapman is your local candidate for sainthood. Regular updates on forthcoming events will appear in the Hanover Directory. Regular update from HASL - Hanover Action for Sustainable Living

Can we ‘Go Dutch’ in Hanover Over 40% of Hanover & Elm Grove households do not own a car or van, according to the 2011 census . That’s slightly higher than the proportion in Brighton & Hove as a whole, at 38%. As you would expect, with the lowest level of car ownership in the South East, the city also has a low proportion of people travelling to work by car – just 37%, compared to 60% in the South East. However, we are not generally using our bikes to get around instead. Between 7.5% and 9% of people in Hanover cycle to work – pretty high for the UK, and high within Brighton & Hove too (hills, what hills?). But these rates are still nowhere near the rate of bike ownership, which is around 50%, according to the council’s 2011 survey in the area . Why are cycling rates so low? As the BBC found out in a June 2014 poll , the biggest reason is that people are scared to cycle on the roads. And who can blame them, when very little effort is made on most UK roads to keep people on bikes away from terrifying lorries, buses and cars? Cycling in Hanover feels relatively safe (though it’s hard to see round corners, with cars parked right up to them), but once you get to a main road, it’s pretty scary. The idea of kids as young as eight cycling independently to school seems ridiculous. But that kind of freedom for children is something they take for granted in the Netherlands, where nobody is “a cyclist” because everybody rides bikes . Children do ride their bikes to school from around age eight. Parents carry babies and toddlers on their bikes. People carry shopping by bike. Though it seems the most natural thing in the world now, the Netherlands hasn’t become a cycling paradise by magic. It is the result of policy decisions and a serious level of spending. The Dutch decided to make cycling attractive and safe by separating bikes from cars on all main roads, and making cycling dominant on smaller streets.

Good Food for Good Causes The Food Waste Collective is once again hosting

Good Food for Good Causes, a day-long event that diverts surplus food from landfill, and instead helps it to reach local charities, community projects and other local good causes. For more information about any of the roles, please email foodwastecollective@gmail.com with “GF4GC volunteers” in the subject line. Event details: Date: 12th August 2014 Time: 09:15 – 15:30 Venue: Old Municipal Market, Circus Street, Brighton, BN2 9QF Who are we? The Food Waste Collective is a hub for people who are passionate about addressing food waste in Brighton & Hove. We work to support sustainable, ethical alternatives for the tonnes of perfectly good food that is thrown away from retailers, businesses and farms every year. The collective hosts community actions, talks and social events, as well as supporting other local initiatives tackling food waste in Sussex. Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team

Updates for the Community Neighbourhood survey latest

So far we have had returns of our neighbourhood survey on streets, transport and parking in Bonchurch Road, Lincoln Street, Franklin Road, Toronto Terrace, Hallett Road and Belgrave Street. We are looking for more roads to survey. More results later

We will report fuller results later. Many issues are shared between streets; however there are very different views on the controversial topic of parking controls. It appears that residents north of Elm Grove and east of Queen’s Park Road want to keep things as they are, whereas residents in Lincoln Street, Toronto Terrace and Belgrave Street want to look into controls of some kind. We are hoping to do more surveys

Before starting to see if we can come up with a community plan for those areas that might want some changes, the last HEG LAT meeting felt we should try and survey more roads and try and get a fuller picture of what people want. Recently people in Queen’s Park Road, Holland Street, Baxter Street, Southampton Street, Beaufort Terrace and Lynton Street have come

forward requesting a survey in their road and offering to help. This is great as we are particularly keen to see what people’s views are in the streets between Islingword Road and Elm Grove, and would also like more from roads in between Islingword Road and Southover Street. Would you like your road surveyed?

So if you would like to add your road into the survey AND can help, please contact Chris on greysland@ sky.com or David on davidsg@ntlworld.com Next meeting

The next HEG LAT meeting will be on Monday 4th August at 7pm in The Hanover pub, Queen’s Park Road. The main topic will be the review of local bus services and Mike Best of Brighton and Hove Buses will be there to take questions.

Hanover Dad...

Not Feeling Motivated

I usually try not to be controversial in any of these articles that I write, and I don’t know if it’s just the time of it I’m having lately, but I am really fed up with work at the moment. Now, I know that the majority of us have to work to support ourselves and families etc, and I am very thankful for having a half decent job. I’m usually not bothered about work, but at the moment I am properly fed up. What bugs me most at the minute is that my boss has told me that she “sees something in me” and that “I need to be challenged” and worst of all “need to be taken out of my comfort zone” – what the hell is that all about? I’m 40, not 25! Now I’m sure that some of you reading this relish challenges at work, and want nothing more than to be noticed, be given the opportunity to shine and to climb the corporate ladder. I on the other hand do not. I’m extremely happy in my comfort zone, and I have enough of a challenge in my day just getting two kids up and ready in the morning, thank you very much! I’m of an age now whereby when I talking, another 20% pretending to take notes and sit in meetings, I probably spend 10% listening, 10% the final 60% hoping that I don’t actually get asked to do anything following the meeting. I’m sorry to be so negative, and I don’t actually want to quit my job, but when I do it’s definitely on a Sunday. Did you know that one day on the planet Mercury lasts 1,408 hours, exactly the same as an Earth Monday? To finish on a positive note though, my little boy has told me that when he grows up he wants to be a Power Ranger. I’m definitely going to push him into power ranging, as every time we watch that show, Complete they never need to fill out a feedback form after Painting every training session. bathroom
