hanover Featuring local Food Hero Henry Butler...
Hanover Person - Henr Henry Butler runs Butler’s Wine Cellar in Queen’s Park Road, and also in St George’s Road. He was named Food Hero in the 2015 Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Awards. How long has Butler’s Wine Cellar been trading?
Butlers have been trading in the Queen’s Park Road shop since November 1979. My parents started it, and have now both retired. I took over the reins quite a long time ago. Before this we had a wine business in a warehouse behind the Signalman pub; before that my parents had a restaurant called Le Grand Gousier. Why do you think your shop is so successful? Success is relative! We’ve kept an independent business going for over 35 years in Brighton, which I imagine is quite rare, and I’m proud of that. Over this time, we have developed a massive range of different wines. I know lots of people assume we only stock expensive wines, probably because we

Do you live in the area too? I used to live in the area. I currently live in Kemp Town, in between our two shops. What do you most like about the area? The people obviously; we’ve been in the area for so long, we have made many friends through our shop. It’s dangerously easy to nip out for a pint and a chat, dangerously easy, which is why I’m currently a bit portly. We like to think we have helped support the parents and teachers of both Elm Grove and St Luke’s schools, with our liquid medicine. don’t look like an off licence. We stock wines from £5.99 upwards, plenty under £10, which our regular customers enjoy. Yes, you can come and buy some exclusive wines, wines which we are the only people in the country to have, but we mainly focus on good value, tasty everyday wines. We like people, we like our customers, we are a community business.

Hanover’s David Bramwell has a new book...
The Haunted Moustache a new book by David Bramwell Hanover’s David Bramwell (creator of the Cheeky Guides) has just published a new book, The Haunted Moustache, which began as an award-winning one-man show at the Brighton Fringe Festival and has also been dramatised by BBC Radio 3. Tell us more about your book...
It is the true account of a unique inheritance: a century-old moustache in a box, which I received from a relative, shortly before moving to Brighton in 1991. All I knew about its former ‘owner’, Ambrose Oddfellow, was that he had been a freak-show performer residing in Lincolnshire. I had no idea why my relative bequeathed this singular heirloom to me but I arrived in Brighton with a moustache in my suitcase and a mystery to solve. The book is the story of a ten-year odyssey through Brighton’s occult history, its séances and spiritual churches, strange cults, psychedelic groups and freak shows. I dabbled in them all. Well, when in Rome, as they say.
As part-memoir, essay and scrapbook, The Haunted Moustache also pays tribute to some of the town’s countercultural heroes, past and present, including Genesis P-Orridge, Atters and moustachioed eccentric Drako Zarhazar, who once modelled for Dali and made films with Warhol. Drako was hard to miss – he usually sported a cape, fez, make-up and twirly moustache. There’s also Brian Behan, mischief maker and political activist, who once staged a mass ‘wee-in’ at Brighton town hall in protest against the removal of public loos on the seafront (it did the trick), and Adrian Bunting, whose lasting legacy is the Brighton Open Air Theatre (B.O.A.T.). In 1995 Bunting pulled off a monumental hoax in Edinburgh with his
show, The World’s Smallest Theatre. It fooled the world’s press. But you’ll have to read the book to find out how!
“The Haunted Moustache is a genuinely marvellous demonstration of how beautifully the mechanism of reality functions, if you‘re paying sufficient attention. Neurologically, this will light you up like a Christmas tree.” - Alan Moore What is your next project?
I’ve got another book coming out in October called Odditorium; it’s a celebration of unusual folk from history whose obsessions changed the world. It’s published by Hodder and features the likes of Ken Campbell, Sun Ra, Ivor Cutler, Moondog, Timothy Leary, Stanley Unwin and Wilhelm Reich. It was great fun to research. “The Haunted Moustache” by David Bramwell is published by Cheeky Guides Ltd and available from City Books, Waterstones, Pussy, Castor & Pollux, Amazon etc. to advertise, please call 01273 551021 or visit www.hanoverdirectory.co.uk

The latest musings of Hanover Dad....
Hanover Dad...Let the Train Take the Strain Holiday season is upon us and I hope you’ve all got something exciting planned for your summer break. Before I had children, my lovely wife and I used to have holidays that consisted of flying somewhere hot and relaxing by a pool, drinking cocktails. However, now that we have two kids in our life, our holidays have got ‘busier’ by the year.
Two years ago, we had a road trip through France. Last year we had a road trip through France, but added the extra dimension of camping. This year, well let me tell you about this year. This year, my wife said to me, “We’re going to InterRail.” – “That’s nice,” I said. “Where’s that, and is there a pool?” My wife at this point gave me the ‘look’ I have become so accustomed to and said, “No, it means we are going to travel around Europe on trains.” – “That’s bonkers,” I replied. “We should just fly somewhere, we’d get there so much quicker.” This got me a more severe ‘look’ and my wife said, “What would you like to do then, just sit by a pool all day? You’d be bored in five minutes.”

The funny thing is, I’ve had this conversation with several other parents and they all say the same – “Oh, yes Steve, give it a day or so and you’ll all be bored.” – “Come on, Steve, you can’t just sit about. What would the kids do? You’d go out of your mind.” Well actually, I think I could sit still doing nothing for quite some time. Also, if you added a swimming pool and some cocktails into the equation, I could sit still and not get bored for a significantly longer period of time! Clearly though, as my wife often tells me, I actually have no idea what I’m talking about and don’t know what’s good for me. Therefore, the InterRailing trip is booked. From what I can gather, it’s a holiday based on intricate planning, dedication to timetables and lots of running and shouting at train stations. It is essentially a big commute from Brighton to Portugal.
If I’m honest though, as the years go by, I think I am getting more adventurous. Despite the fact I’ll be travelling thousands of miles by train across Europe, the only part of the trip that’s actually daunting me is the journey from Brighton to Newhaven to catch the ferry, as that bit is run by Southern Rail! Hanover Queen’s WI
Hanover Queen’s WI wishes you all a fabulous summer. We don’t meet in August but welcome visitors with open arms to our September meeting - more on that later. But for now...
Do something great with an extra plate? Casserole Club launches in Brighton and Hove.
Casserole Club aims to reduce loneliness
Brighton & Hove Food Partnership (http://bhfood.org.uk/) are launching Casserole Club in the city aimed at reducing loneliness through sharing a meal.
Hint of the Month When you pack your holiday suitcases put anything with Velcro into a plastic bag. You will not regret this. Also pack a large black plastic bag in each suitcase and put all your dirty washing in that. This makes unpacking at the other end much easier. Recipe of the Month Bottom of fridge soup: Cook a potato, an onion and 2 cloves of garlic in butter or oil. Add 2-3 cups of vegetables - courgettes, spinach, sweet potato, carrots, peas, tomatoes etc. Stir for 5 minutes. Add 2 cups of water and a stock cube. Cook till vegetables are soft; purée with a hand blender. Add salt and pepper to taste. A dollop of houmous is a nice addition.

The scheme to be rolled out this summer will encourage people to share extra portions of home-cooked food with others who might not always be able to cook for themselves. The first area is made up of three wards (Westbourne, Goldsmid and Central Hove). The second area has two wards (Queen’s Park and Hanover & Elm Grove). Director of BHFP Vic Borrill said: “This is an exciting opportunity to deliver a new project in the city to use food to reduce loneliness.” Cooks will need to sign up on the website (www.casseroleclub.com) to complete a food hygiene quiz and to have a DBS check before they are signed up.

hanover Featuring a local business...
A must-visit venue for your new tiles and bathroom If you’re revamping your bathroom or need tiles for your kitchen or conservatory floor, look no further: Eurotiles & Bathrooms is the one place that you ought to visit.
There is a huge selection of tiles ranging in style from large size porcelain ones which are perfect for a modern bathroom or for kitchen, lounge and even patio floors, through mosaics to more traditional 10 x 10cm for kitchens and marble and stone effects for bathrooms. Wood effect tiles are very popular at the moment as the latest technology means that they are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing and they can be used in areas that are prone to damp where real wood would not be suitable, and the showroom has lots of choice of different styles and colours of wood. It is the exclusive stockist of Ca’ Pietra in Sussex giving you access to some fabulous natural stone tiles. There is also a full range of bathroom products on display including furniture, sanitary ware, showers, taps and accessories such as mirrors and heated
towel rails. Ege sanitary ware, which comes with a 10-year warranty, is exclusive to Eurotiles & Bathrooms in the UK and they have other stylish brands such as Burlington and Pura Bathrooms. Most of the range is in stock so you don’t need to plan weeks in advance, you can just come in, choose your products and take them away, or arrange for free local delivery. The Brighton showroom is based on the Freshfields Business Park, near to Screwfix and Benchmarx Kitchens. They offer free parking so you can pull up outside, and knowledgeable, friendly staff to help you decide on the best products for your project. www.eurotilesandbathrooms.com Email: brighton@eurotilesandbathrooms.com Phone: 01273 605445

Councillor Report - David Gibson
Following the momentous decision to leave the EU, we have seen resignations of party leaders, a new prime minister, and the suspension of the Brighton and Hove branch of the Labour party. Meanwhile, in the Green Party, Caroline Lucas is standing as leader once again. The tectonic plates of politics are shifting and emotions are running high. Despite fears for the future, I hope that (once the Labour Party have resolved their differences) this realignment in politics will permit the forging of a much needed “progressive alliance” of political parties around shared values: opposing failed austerity, supporting a fair and proportional voting system and urgent action to limit climate change and move to a more sustainable and equitable use of the world’s resources. I shall be working with other progressive groups towards this end. My work continues with the Chair of the HEGLAT and other community members of the transport working group to ensure the community has a say in the Controlled Parking Zone proposal for Hanover. Between now and October council officers are working on the details and consulting more widely before a final decision. Now is the time for anyone with ideas, requests around cycle storage facilities, one way streets, planters, changes to yellow lines, traffic calming or dropped kerbs to make their suggestions. Anyone with ideas is welcome to contact me. Following the serious injury to a cyclist at Elm Grove/Lewes Road junction in July, improving junction safety is an urgent priority. On housing committee in June, I was pleased that my proposals to improve matters for homeless people housed in emergency accommodation were agreed. This included a commitment to listen to our existing residents, carry out more property inspections, and to explore how the council can build its own low-cost, quick-build emergency accommodation.
Finally I have just been promised that the mysteriously missing recycling facilities for Tamplin Terrace, Phoenix Close, Phoenix Rise, Malthouse Lane and Albion Street on the Phoenix Estate will be reinstated and the kidnapped communal refuse bin will be returned shortly!

the street. Suddenly, the street was transformed into areas for eating, playing and live music with a Canadian theme – well, we are surrounded by Montreal, Toronto and Quebec streets up here. The Independent pub and local residents provided eats and beers. Table games including ping-pong, and table football appeared from the Resource Centre. Organiser of the street closure and music scout was local resident Peter Fitzgerald. Peter booked the following music acts: Elliot Tatler with his acoustic covers; the screaming indie group Via Tirana; and the pièce de résistance, a couple of singing Canadian ‘Mounties’! The Mounties were in reality those loveable local rogues the Brown Stripes who entertained us with Canadian banter and great alternative covers including Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ and of course ELO’s classic ‘Mr Blue Sky’. Unlike four years ago (the last time Montreal residents held a street party in a monsoon) there was blue sky and, blimey…no rain. A surprise guest appearance were the Brighton Morris Men who managed to thrash and flash their sticks and hankies in merry unison. They even encouraged residents to have a go with those mighty sticks and learn some lethal dance moves. Reactions from neighbours, other Hanover residents and visitors included: “So this is the Hanover vibe, so friendly” and “Wonderful to see kids playing in the street and doing all those chalk drawings”; “Is this a regular event? Great idea. Mine’s a Harveys” and “More face painting pleeease”. After the last note was played, amps switched off, gazebos packed up, trestle tables snapped shut and maple leaf bunting bundled away, Montreal Road residents asked “Shall we do this again, next year?” The answer…”mais oui!” Hamish MacGillivray

hanover News from the Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team...
Street Improvements and Now that the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, at the end of June, approved further consultation on the details of road design to take place between August and October, HEGLAT are keen to ensure that our voices are heard. This is a one-off opportunity to put forward ideas to improve our streets and, if you want to get involved, now is the right time. We already have quite a few suggestions from residents about matters such as one-way streets, cycle storage facilities, traffic calming, changes to yellow lines, community maintained planters and dropped kerbs for some streets. Washington Street for example has done a local street survey of its residents to gauge support for different suggestions. If you have any ideas for your road please contact Chris Taylor greysland@sky.com or David Gibson davidsg@ntlworld.com. Detailed designs will be worked up with council officers and put to a final vote of residents in the autumn. Based on our feedback, the council will

implement controlled parking and street design changes in the areas that vote for them. For the areas in favour, a controlled parking zone will come into being by the spring of 2017. The hours of controlled parking will reflect the preferences expressed by residents as part of the final consultation. HEGLAT has a parking and street improvement working group that will meet regularly over the next few months. All are welcome. It is worth stressing (not least because nearly 50% of households in Hanover do not own a car) that this working group is not only about parking, but is about how we can make the best use of our streets for everyone. If you are interested in joining this group please contact Chris or David. Street Parties At the HEGLAT AGM it was agreed that HEGLAT would promote street parties as a great way to build community spirit and neighbourliness. So far this year there have already been events in Montreal Road, Lincoln Street, Windmill Street, Islingword Street and a garden party at the Hanover Community Centre. If
Lincoln Street Tea Party, 2015
you are thinking of setting something up on your street, let us know. We can put you in touch with other residents who have done something similar, like getting permission to close your street to traffic for the event. The next HEGLAT meeting will discuss the current progress with street improvement/Controlled Parking Zone plans and we will be inviting a speaker from Cityclean. The meeting starts at 7pm in the back room of The Hanover pub, Queen’s Park Road, on Monday 12 September. If we don’t see you before, enjoy the rest of the summer!!!

The latest news from Hanover Action...
Controlled Parking, Fairness and a Sustainable Community These are times of opportunity in our local community. The tilt towards a Controlled Parking Zone in areas of Hanover & Elm Grove (subject to further detailed consultation), and the reporting of the City’s Fairness Commission, have both highlighted the diverse pressures on our community and the demands for change. Inequality rightly features heavily in the Fairness Commission report. Our desires for sustainability across our city must always recognise the hidden nature of much inequality, and the pressures that the old, vulnerable and disabled members of our communities face every day. The Fairness Commission report highlights this well, but also that austerity is exacerbating this, and limiting the power of the council to address these needs and pressures. So how can communities respond to these pressures? In short we can’t blame ‘the council’ and must use our community power over decision-making to ensure that we move towards a fairer, sustainable city. This autumn we have a key opportunity to ask for more, even demand better, long-term action. So, in the controlled parking developments, let’s ensure we are: • Considering everyone: yes the 50% of adult residents that own a car in Hanover & Elm Grove, also everyone else, including those under 18. The streets are for all, whether you walk, cycle, get a bus, or ride in a buggy. • Creating new spaces within our streets: for play, for coming together, and for greening our urban environment. • Decluttering our paths: by getting cars off them and removing unnecessary signage and street clutter. The streets are for all whether you are fit or have mobility challenges. • Making our pathways and community spaces accessible for all: ensuring all kerbs are dropped so all pedestrians, including those with mobility challenges, can move around easily.

• Creating safe travel zones for our schools: on Elm Grove, the bottom of Hartington Road and around Fairlight, and on walking routes to other schools locally. Raised walk-ways in front of schools will reduce traffic speed 24/7, and help tackle routine speeding and counter the rat-runs. • Making the case for more investment: this will benefit our health, and our kids’ future, in a safe and greener urban environment that counters the high levels of air pollution, increases biodiversity, and improves our collective well-being. We all have the opportunity to get involved to make the change: - through the Local Action Team and its working group. - giving detailed broad-ranging feedback when we have the chance. In the detailed consultations, but also directly to our councillors. - being part of Hanover Action’s volunteering, to enable long-term sustainable change.
