HAPPY CHRISTMAS to all Hanover businesses and residents!!
Blimey, Christmas is here again! Where did that sneak up from? It was only Summer a few weeks ago and here we are once again in a panic about turkeys, sprouts and shopping! I am afraid I am a bit last minute every Christmas and find the whole thing a bit of a strain often scratching around for presents in the shops on Christmas Eve before the shops close. I always make a resolution to be super organised for the next Christmas but never seem to pull it off. I hope you all have it nicely under control! Still all things considered it is a magical time of the year and we wish you all the very best for a restful and enjoyable yuletide! hanover This story was sent in to us by two Hanover residents...
Christopher’s House We met Christopher just before the millennium in Malawi travelling south before we began teaching in an international school in Mozambique. We loved Malawi straight away and felt a connection with the people we met there. Christopher was selling hand painted postcards on Nkhata Bay beach. He was 13 and living with his gran and younger sister in a small bamboo shack. Having bought some postcards we got chatting and he asked us if we had any watercolour paints he could borrow. We did, and over a day painting together we found out his life story. Both his parents and two older siblings had died and Christopher was working hard to save money to pay to go to secondary school. We instantly warmed to Christopher and after a few days he asked us if we would be able to help him with his school fees. After visiting his gran and head teacher, who were both extremely proud of Christopher’s hard work and effort, we felt it was the perfect opportunity to help and also set up links with the country we had fallen in love with – ‘the warm heart of Africa’.
After a year in Mozambique we returned back to Hanover expecting our first baby. We continued to support Christopher but in February 2002 we had the sad news that his gran had died. We paid for the funeral and for him to go to boarding school. His sister by then was married but she too soon died and we became the only family Christopher had. We continued to support him, through catering college and work, which he had to go to South Africa to find. Now our three children, Eshe 15, Jini 9 and Mac 7, call him their brother. He desperately needs to be back in the security and warmth of the community he grew up in and away from the vulnerable existence he currently has. To help Christopher go back to Nkhata Bay we are rais-

ing money to build a house for him on a small plot of land he was left by his family. The house will not only be a place to live but we will also be setting up community projects within it, which will make Christopher sustainable; it will also help others like him. The build and community project will cost £10,000 plus.
Our flights are booked for next summer and the children are very excited about meeting the brother they have never met! Featuring a local Hanover illustrator...
Hanover Person – Anthony Atkinson Anthony Atkinson is an illustrator who lives in Baxter Street. His book, “Lundy, Rockall, Dogger, Fair Isle: A Celebration of The Islands Around Britain”, was published this year. How long have you lived in Hanover?
Pretty much the whole of the ten years that I’ve lived in Brighton. Apart from a brief stint in Seven Dials, I’ve lived all over Hanover - working my way northwards from Stanley Street before finally buying a place just off Elm Grove. What do you like about the area?
The character of the place - the maze of streets filled with brightly coloured houses, all looking slightly wonky like they’re about to slip down the hill at any moment. And the pubs, of course. All of these combine with the geography to create somewhere that’s like no other in Brighton. Tell us more about your book...
The book is a journey around some of the fascinating and quirky islands that are dotted around the British Isles: charting the histories, characters and folklore that make up these magical, miniature worlds. Most of the islands are real but we have also thrown in a few notable fictional ones for good measure (Summer Isle and Hy Brazil, for example). Taking inspiration from the Wainwright pictorial guides of the 1950s and 60s, it is fully illustrated throughout - perfect for any armchair adventurer! What sparked your interest in islands?
I’ve always loved the idea of islands ever since I was a kid. We used to visit my dad’s cousin on the Isle of Wight every summer and growing up in Bournemouth you could see the island clearly from the beach. Also we used to regularly visit my mum’s cousin at

the other end of the country on the Isle of Arran in Scotland. Both of those islands are so unique - still part of the UK but with their own special character and landscape; miniature countries in their own right. I even find the ferry crossings a thrill! What are you working on now?
Currently I’m writing a small book about a cat, a slightly bigger book about marine wildlife and then an epic series about an underwater adventurer. A lot to do all at once!

Brought to you by the Hanover Action for Sustainable Living...
Make the voice of people in Hanover heard in Paris
In December representatives from over 190 countries will meet in Paris for the United Nations 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21). The aim is to agree a global legally binding climate treaty. The hopes of getting an agreement are uncertain. Thousands are converging on Paris to ensure the negotiators hear loud and clear that people want a sustainable planet for all. People’s bike ride to Paris - time to act
Brighton is hosting the bike ride on the way from London to Paris carrying the stories of hope and protest from our communities to Paris. We will be greeting the riders as they arrive at Withdean Park on 6th December at 4pm. Join us if you can. We also want as many people as can to ride with the group to Newhaven early on 7th December, meeting at the Level at 6am, setting off at 7am to see them off on the ferry from Newhaven. We shall be seeing off Hanover and Elm Grove cycling activist Duncan Blinkhorn on his way to Paris. Good luck, Duncan! Global warming is picking up
Record warm temperatures measured in the first nine months of this year mean that the world has already reached the halfway point towards the “threshold” of a 2ºC increase on pre-industrial levels judged to be potentially dangerous for climate change. While 2ºC was agreed as the level which must not be breached, and would take the world to dangerous warming, anything above 1.5 will have extremely damaging impacts in many parts of the world. Island nations would be wiped off the map and sub-Saharan African agriculture would be devastated. We are currently seeing starvation following drought in Ethiopia. These scenarios will increase rapidly if we don’t stand together as a world, in solidarity with poorer nations where the impact of global warming will hit hardest, and make our voices heard for future generations who will pay the cost of our unsustain-

Ever thought about driving an electric car, but wondering how to get it charged without an off-road space? Brighton & Hove City Council is looking at expanding its network of on-street charging points, including within residential communities such as Hanover. There is an opportunity right now to influence this potential investment - so if you have ever wondered about making the leap to EV (Electric Vehicles), please email your details to contacthasl@gmail.com. The more interest we can demonstrate, the more chance they might appear on a street corner near you.

We have two concerts on this month. If you haven’t received our recent brochure and would like one, please contact us. On Friday 4th December pianist Ben Socrates presents Visions & Dances – a recital featuring music inspired by the rhythm, movement and energy of dance, and music that is deeply evocative, visionary and imaginative. This repertoire spans over 400 years, from Scarlatti’s kinetic sonatas to the atmospheric In the Quiet of the Night, by the acclaimed Brighton-based composer Lee Westwood. Ben Socrates has been acclaimed in recent years for his compelling and incisive interpretations of classical and contemporary piano repertoire, and his work exploring music for four hands, with singers, classical improvisation and collaboration with dance.
And on Saturday 12th December (please note day), the award-winning Brighton Youth Orchestra String Ensemble (BYOSE) will perform works by Purcell, Dvořák and Robin Milford.
The ensemble, led by conductor Andy Sherwood, brings together the finest young string players in the city and further afield and has worked with world class young soloists such as Laura van der Heijden and Daniel Shao.
The concert takes place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, Brighton BN2 9ZB at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7 / £5 concessions / £3 under-12s, available on the door. Disabled access. hanover The latest musings of Hanover Dad....
Hanover Dad...Everything is Bigger in Texas By the time you read this article, I will have just got back from quite an exciting adventure. My lovely wife and I and our two little ones are off to Texas for a family wedding. I’m very excited! As you are probably aware (it’s not like I’ve mentioned it in my last three articles), I have just got back from a holiday in Texas. What an amazing place and one thing I noticed was that, wherever you looked and whoever you spoke with, the phrase “everything is bigger in Texas” was used. I must admit in many ways this is true. For example, the cars that people drove were on the whole so big they wouldn’t even fit down half the streets in Hanover, let alone being able to park round here! Then there was the food. One day for breakfast I asked for a breakfast taco. What I got was three breakfast tacos, with four roast potatoes and a slice of Bavarian coffee cake! Another thing I noticed was the lack of old stuff. We visited a newly refurbished ‘mansion’ in one of the towns we stayed in. It was the oldest house in the

area. People were dressed up in Wild West clothing and exclaimed to us that “the mansion was built in 1897 – can you believe that!?” We nodded politely and then my daughter said, “Dad, wasn’t our house in Brighton built before that? I’m sure I saw that old picture in the pub that said Hanover is much older than this mansion.” This clearly wasn’t what they wanted to hear. However, there are things in Texas that definitely aren’t bigger than in Brighton, and the first is seagulls. Brighton wins hands down in the seagull stakes. The Texan ones live on a diet of shrimp and fresh fish and they’re tiny. Clearly what a seagull needs to get really big and strong is a diet of fag butts, discarded kebab meat and the insides of our rubbish sacks! Whilst it has no comparison to size, one thing that is definitely better in Brighton is our beer. We don’t have low carb, low calorie beer in our pubs called things like Lone Star Light Ultra Dry. We have nice beer called things like badger’s winkle and wizard’s staff and it tastes like beer and not lager cordial. What is definitely a bit bigger in Brighton now though is my belly, so I need to go on a diet. This’ll be easy, it’s not like Christmas is coming or anything, oh hang on - and with that in mind, can I take this opportunity to wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Her linocuts and screenprints somehow manage to capture part of the essence of this quirky bit of Brighton that we all love, without it turning into a cliché...the streets of coloured houses, those hills, the telephone wires, our favourite pubs… They’re all there and more, together with lots of other bits of Brighton that have caught her eye, from all the independent shops and pubs to the station and skateboard park.
We all know that here in Hanover, behind all those similar looking front doors, there are many surprise features hidden, and Janet’s studio is one of them. Carefully tucked away at the bottom of her garden is a complex working environment, complete with a rather impressive Victorian printing press. This year she has decided to open her studio and home for a Christmas Sale, offering a reduction of at

Wine Woman brings us wine advice for Christmas...
Wines for Christmas Day
As the season of goodwill approaches our thoughts turn to festive fare. Although a Brighton Christmas is more likely to include quinoa than Quality Street, let’s stick with tradition, kicking off with a sparkler, say Crémant de Bourgogne, a wallet-friendly Champagne alternative, guaranteed to take the edge off the ‘where are the batteries’ wail.
For your starter of paté or smoked fish, Chablis would cut through the richness nicely and at this stage has a fighting chance of being appreciated.
Time for the main event. Yes, you have forgotten the annual turkey disappointment and here it is again in all its dry and tasteless glory. Whilst experience tells us nothing is going to turn the wretched bird into a gastronomic delight, a light red (Pinot or Beaujolais) or traditional Chardonnay would soften the pain. Or an aged Rioja with vegetal aromas is a great partner to everyone’s favourites - sprouts!
Now glassy eyed and quite possibly in some discomfort, it is of course time to squeeze in a sliver of that lightest of British treats - the pudding drenched in brandy butter. At this stage anything goes, but a syrupy PX sherry would be perfect, or a fresher orange
Renu Your Bath Baths restored to NEW without removal. One day service. Any colour
muscat with bags of citrus zest - a nicely boozy rift on the chocolate orange.
So hot foot it to your nearest independent and stock up, or you may be left on Christmas Eve with the wine equivalent of the strawberry crème! Charlotte Marples www.thewinewoman.uk

Local resident and critically acclaimed actor/director Gary Sefton brings us A Christmas Carol...
Scrooge inSPIREd!
A new venue in East Brighton hosts a classic tale for all the family this Christmas. You can join tightfisted, money-grabbing Scrooge as he journeys through Dickens’ masterpiece, A Christmas Carol, with carols, candles, mince pies, mulled wine and, of course, some ghostly goings-on.
Adapted and staged by Queen’s Park resident (and acclaimed actor/director) Gary Sefton, the production takes place at The Spire - Brighton’s newest venue. “When I first saw the Spire I thought it would be a perfect venue for A Christmas Carol.” Sefton, who also plays the mean-spirited lead role, Scrooge, has just finished a lead role in ‘The 39 Steps’ in the West End and has worked extensively in theatre for over 20 years. We asked Gary why he decided to stage the show here. “Standing in the school playground and chatting with frustrated families I realised that there wasn’t really a decent family option for audiences in Brighton. So I’ve decided to do something about it.” At £30 for a family ticket, it is less than half the price of many of the city’s offerings. A Christmas Carol at The Spire runs from 16 December right up to Christmas Eve, with performances every night at 6pm and 8.15pm (not Sunday 20th). Full details and tickets via scroogeinspired.co.uk. Local Action Team News...
Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team At the October meeting of HEGLAT, Charles Dudley and Dean Spiers came from Sussex University to update residents on what is happening as a result of the Planning Inspectorate decision on allowing further development on the campus to expand both lecture facilities and accommodation. Most residents were unimpressed and the only tangible good thing that came out of it was information on the new Lewes Road Information Centre at 91 Lewes Road BN2 3HZ, where residents can go directly to air any problems they are having with students. This office opens on 19th November. The Parking Working Group have been meeting with officers from the council to discuss the process of a consultation for the area, and timelines for this have now been outlined and are available on the HEGLAT website. Needless to say we have been getting various emails from residents asking why the timeline/ process is taking so long, but the simple answer is that legal procedures have to be followed before any CPZ can be implemented. The January edition of the Hanover Directory will feature a full double page spread giving as much information as possible to residents in order that they can get an idea of what progress has been made.
