Page 4/5 Historical Hanover Page 7 Local Person Page 9 More Than Loft Ladders So no snow yet this winter so far…well at the time of writing anyway, which happens to Page 11 be mid-January. Before winter started there was talk in the press of it being the coldest winter for many a long year, but so far we have been spared it seems. Historical Hanover... The

Gardener’s Arms

This beerhouse was at 40 Islingword Road, from 1870 until being closed on 10 April 1948, when the licence was surrendered. It is hard to say when it was built, though probably this was in the 1850s. It was a shop before becoming a beerhouse and it reverted to this use when delicensed. Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. Here we feature a local Hanover person...

Tim Crouch Performs in I Malvolio at the Dome Studio

Actor, writer and director Tim Crouch lives in Cobden Road with his wife and three children. He will be performing in his one-man show, “I, Malvolio”, at Brighton Dome Studio in March. How long have you lived in Hanover?

We moved to Hanover from Bristol in 1998. The previous year I’d been in a touring National Theatre production that played for a week in St Martin’s Church on the Lewes Road. I spent a lot of time in Hanover pubs then and fell in love with the place. What do you most like about the area?

Walking through the narrow streets late at night – preferably a little drunk and with a full moon shining down on me. The smell of the sea in summer and the smell of wood smoke in winter. Foxes awake. People asleep. What would you most like to see improved?

I’d like the council to institute a rolling programme of fitting gastric bands to seagulls and rubberising the tips of their beaks. Elsewhere, more trees, please. And covered, secure cycle storage has arrived in Cobden Road! Do you prefer writing or performing?

Writing is the hardest thing because you start with nothing: a moment you want to explore or a story you want to tell. Acting is the proving point of all the work that’s gone before. As an actor, you’re the delivery system for the work but, in the long term, it’s the writing that allows the acting to exist. Performing is an immediate thrill; writing is a deeper pleasure. Tell us more about your one-man show…

at the Festival here in 2010. It began life at Dorothy Stringer High School but then got hijacked by adult audiences. It’s toured through five continents. On one level it’s the story of Twelfth Night told from Malvolio’s perspective. On another level it’s an existential clown show – a howl from a man cast adrift in front of a heartless audience. One review described it as a sustained ‘reverse heckle’ which feels about right.

When is your show on and how do we get tickets? It’s on at the Brighton Dome Studio on March 13th & 14th. Go to www.brightondome.org – or call 01273 709709. What will you be working on next?

Space in Hanover is let’s face it at a premium. This might help...

Look up! And Get More Space at Home for Just £325

We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise is based in Brighton and is run by skilled local Patrick Aherne who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for.

“We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Patrick. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £277 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call-out charges. Patrick provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now! hanover This is the 25th anniversary year of Barrie Alderton estate agents and their Southover Street office has recently been refurbished. We asked Barrie to tell us more about the business…

Barrie Alderton’s 25th Anniversary How did your business begin?

In 1990, a good friend of mine knew the agent in Southover Street wanted to sell. I liked the position and loved the area so I decided to take a leap and open up my own estate agency. It was at the height of a recession so I was taking a huge risk. The bank gave me three months to get established. The first sale we agreed was a house in Southampton Street which sold for £67,000; the rest, as they say, is history. Is it a family business?

We are a true family business. My wife Geraldine set up the letting department in 1997 as we were overwhelmed with enquiries from people wanting to rent and let out their properties. My daughter Vicky was the next to join the business in 2002, with my son Peter joining after he had graduated from university. At one stage even my nephew worked with us. We now employ five other members of staff, two of which are apprentices. Barrie Alderton Estate Agents has certainly grown over the last 25 years with the opening of our office in London Road four years ago. Tell us about the community projects you are involved in...

From very early on it was decided that something should be given back to the community, so in 1992 Barrie Alderton’s became the main sponsor of the beer glasses at the Hanover Beer Festival. The Hanover Art Trail is another of our local sponsored events. We were delighted to be a sponsor of

Hanover The Musical, as well as The Treason Show, a few years ago. We supply raffle prizes for Carlton Hill School, and have also helped sponsor street parties in Cobden and Montreal Roads, where we also sponsor the flower planter. Tell us your plans for your anniversary year...

This is a very special year for us, so we are holding a small celebration for family, friends and business associates in February. Our main focus though is on raising money for The Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice, as it’s the only children’s hospice in Sussex. Another event will be a golf day and a few little bits and pieces throughout the year.

Barrie Alderton Estate Agents are looking forward to welcoming clients old and new to their newly refurbished office in 2015. Feel free to pop in, give a small donation to our chosen charity and pick up a Beer Festival Glass.

hanover The latest in the musings of Hanover Dad...

Hanover Dad... Detox and Diets

Well, by the time you read this it will be the beginning of February, but I am actually writing this in mid-January and I’m miserable. Nothing bad has happened to me, in fact physically only good is happening, but I’m seriously moody. This sense of malaise is because I’m detoxing for the month of January, which means no booze, no carbs, no fatty foods, no fun and no smiling whatsoever.

This all sounded like such a good idea over Christmas as I sat there opening another bottle of wine and helping myself to a chocolate truffle – “I know, I’ll detox next month, sort myself right out, get rid of a few pounds, give the old liver a spring clean, what a good idea.” An idea that is clearly much easier to think about whilst stuffed full of food and mildly drunk than to actually do in real life. I mean, for instance, lunch for me in the last two weeks of 2014 consisted of about half a pound of stilton, a bit of cold meat, a few pickles for vitamin C and some more wine obviously in order to achieve my five a day quota of fruit. Lunch in the first two weeks of 2015, however, consists of a smoothie made of beetroot juice, kale, spinach, cucumber and a side order of gloom.

“I know, I’ll detox next month, sort myself right out, get rid of a few pounds, give the old liver a spring clean, what a good idea.”

I’ve had to change all the things I like. Have you ever experienced the joy of carb-free ‘mash’ and alcoholfree beer? No, neither have I and I’ve been having loads of that lately. As if all this abstinence wasn’t bad enough for my mood, a doctor friend of mine asked me recently, “Why are you giving up drinking for a month?” – “To detox my body and prove that I’m not an alcoholic, obviously,” I said jokingly. “Hmmm,” he

Darren Clarke

replied. “That’s exactly the kind of thing an alcoholic would say.” Well, great, thanks for that, doctor! Still unperturbed I woke up last Saturday without a flicker of a hangover. “You must feel good,” my wife said. “No,” I moaned, “I feel like I’m going to work, but it’s the weekend.” Still, I will persevere and next time you see me I’ll be glowing, svelte, energised and healthy.

Actually that’s not true, as you’ll be reading this in February, so I’ll more than likely be drunk, tired and clutching a kebab, but very, very happy. Steve Rust

hanover Here we bring you the latest news from the Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team...

Update on Community Plan for our Streets By the time you read this, there will have been two more important meetings with regard to the HEGLAT Community Survey. Thursday 22nd January saw a meeting of Elm Grove residents where they were encouraged to be part of the process and to get volunteers to help survey their streets. The Working Group “Sub-groups” also came together to present findings and ideas, some of which were well received, some not so and others quite surprising, but it showed that a great deal of care and consideration has gone into the work so far. At present the working group are exploring the idea of a medium touch controlled parking scheme for the areas that want controlled parking. A medium touch scheme would involve parking restrictions for three one-hour slots each day.

The next HEGLAT meeting will hear of the latest findings and suggestions from the working groups (including what residents in Elm Grove and beyond think). Come and have your say on the

outlines of a community plan being proposed by the working group. The meeting will be held at 7pm on Monday 2nd February in the backroom at the Hanover pub, Queen’s Park Road.

The next HEGLAT meeting will hear of the latest findings and suggestions from the working groups One thing is clear – that all members of the groups are trying to take on board the ideas and concerns so far that came out of the community survey. A plan of sorts is coming together, but don’t forget – nothing will be presented to anyone in authority unless it has the support of our residents and neighbours in the area affected. This will be a community plan by the community and for the community. For further information, offers of help or to express a concern please contact Chris Taylor greysland@sky.com

21 A book on local food from a Brighton chef…

A Mule Across the Water Real Food in Sussex and Normandy by Rob Silverstone

This book will appeal to foodies. It is not a restaurant guide, more a directory of 70 authentic local producers such as wine makers, cheese makers and farmers’ markets. The author, Rob Silverstone, is a Brighton chef who has worked in the Michelin-star kitchen of Michel Guérard. He is keen on healthy eating, has lectured in food and nutrition, and has run his own restaurants, including “The Cook & Fiddle” in Brighton.

The book is full of amusing tales of Rob’s adventures on both sides of the Channel, often food-related, and his musings on life. There are many images of Brighton, plus a list of quality local food producers and Sussex food markets. The final section contains 30 recipes based on local produce, including some vegetarian meals. Riad from the Wild Cherry Deli/Café in Queen s Park Road has contributed a recipe for Beetroot Polenta, with the beetroot sourced from local allotments.

“A Mule Across The Water” is published by Pegasus and is on sale at Waterstones, “Sunshine Books, Art & Coffee” in Hove Street, and Amazon.

The latest regular feature from Wine Woman....

Artists Open Houses needed...

The world divides into two - the starry-eyed romantics and the rest of us. Wherever you sit, Valentine’s Day is a great excuse for climbing back on the wagon after January’s self-denial.

Calling all art lovers and house-proud residents.

Valentine’s Day Wines

Rosé can be tricky, often cloyingly sweet or disappointingly insipid. However, old world examples (Provence or, for greater body, Spain) can deliver dry sophistication with tasty up-front fruit. And try Cava rosé - export quality is rising, the best being delicate, strawberry-scented and refreshingly crisp.

Crémant, made like classic Champagne at a fraction of the price, can be a worthy substitute. However, if it must be Champagne, try one of the supermarket signature brands. Some are excellent, a way for the wine buyer to exercise a little flair.

Don’t dismiss red, especially if partnering with a home-cooked meal. Syrah (the same grape as Shiraz) is likely to be a big 2015 trend, the original French expression being lighter and more subtle. Or a Navarra, a similar less familiar alternative to ubiquitous Rioja, for a harmonious match with lamb.

Hanover Art Trail

Following the huge success of last year’s Hanover Art Trail, as part of the Artists Open Houses Festival, the organisers are looking for new houses to participate. The festival is a great chance to open up your home, display your artwork, and support the thriving artists’ community in Hanover. Last year saw huge numbers of excited people work their way through Hanover taking in the incredible range of talents on display. For many, Hanover is the Bohemian heart of the city and it would be incredible to see more houses than ever take part in this wonderful festival.

Last year saw huge numbers of excited people work their way through Hanover taking in the incredible range of talents on display. To find out more about opening up your home as an Open House during the festival, contact the Hanover Art Trail organiser Megan Robinson at megancsrobinson@hotmail.co.uk. For general information and registration visit www.aoh.org.uk .

Finally, if Cupid’s arrow falls short this year, then a food-friendly Italian red, such as Chianti Classico or Valpolicella, makes the perfect accompaniment to pizza for one and a decent box set.

Local housing specialists Q Sales and Lettings bring you an update on the local housing scene...

A Change to the Property Market

As 2015 starts we are seeing a number of changes in the property market, and some could have a huge impact on selling homes in the Hanover area. The tail end of last year brought in the much needed overhaul of the stamp duty thresholds. For most homeowners, this change means it is now cheaper to move home and should encourage a continuation of the thriving property market in the area. Another change is the launch of OnTheMarket.com, a new, estate-agent-owned property portal, designed to combat the duopoly currently existing between Zoopla and Rightmove.

While this seems like a healthy move for the property industry, the impact on consumers could be dramatic. A condition imposed on agents choosing to advertise with OnTheMarket is that they can only advertise on one other portal, and in the case of most agents in Brighton this is Rightmove. What’s the problem then? Well, while in Brighton & Hove Rightmove is the number one portal, the story is different in London where Zoopla is considered the buyers’ number

one choice – to such an extent that London-based firms such as Chestertons have chosen Zoopla as their second portal.

Brighton is a commuter town with a housing market driven by demand from buyers emigrating from the capital. Most estate agents will talk of the need to attract ‘London buyers’ and Hanover is an area where this is particularly relevant. Hanover is perfectly positioned to offer easy access to Brighton Station, the city centre and the seafront – in short it is a desirable area to these London buyers. The impact on sellers is clear: any agent choosing to advertise with OnTheMarket will not be able to offer the same exposure as an agent that has elected to remain with Rightmove AND Zoopla AND Primelocation (alongside an unrestricted number of partner sites), and may struggle to attract those all-important ‘London buyers’. The benefits of OnTheMarket are clear to the property industry: a chance to reduce overheads and bring some healthy competition to a closed marketplace. Many residents of Hanover will argue that anything that reduces the number of Londoners moving down and forcing up prices – and forcing out locals – would be a positive. However, if you have chosen to sell your home you want to know that everything is being done to get you the best price. Sellers have a new choice to make: not just which agent you use, but which portal your home is advertised on.
