hanover Welcome to The Hanover Directory!
Contents
We have news of a project to gather memories of Brighton Dome, as well as some great family shows coming up there in the next few months. We hear about Peter Burrows of St Luke’s Church who has been awarded a BEM by the Queen for his services to the local community – many of you may know him as the man with the wheelbarrow. There are details of the Brighton Half Marathon and this month’s Councillor News is from David Gibson.

Phoenix Brewery
Tamplins Phoenix Brewery in the 1920s. Richard Tamplin opened the Phoenix Brewery in 1821 between Albion Street and Southover Street.
Brewing ceased in 1973 and the brewery was demolished in 1980, but the Phoenix name lives on in the area. Only the red-brick office building (seen in the centre of the photo) in Phoenix Place remains – built in 1893, it is now the Phoenix Community Centre, a Grade II listed building with a carved phoenix at the top. ‘Gentleman Jack’ Tour comes to Brighton Much loved Yorkshire folk duo Belinda O’Hooley and Heidi Tidow have suddenly been propelled into new-found fame for penning the theme tune for Sally Wainwright’s hit BBC1/HBO drama ‘Gentleman Jack’, earning them global admiration, appearances on TV, Radio 4 Woman’s Hour and concerts that sell out months in advance.
Belinda and Heidi have loved working with fellow Yorkshire woman Sally, describing her as ‘down-toearth, passionate and wildly creative’, sharing their love of both interesting, formidable and complex women together with a deep appreciation of the rugged northern landscape they all grew up in. Their boundless songwriting has been described by The Guardian as ‘exceptional’ and by The Independent as ‘defiant, robust, northern, poetical, political folk music for the times we live in’..

Family shows at Brighton Dome Families looking for things to keep little people entertained over the spring school holidays can find a whole range of events at Brighton Dome. Zog
During February half term (19-21 February), everyone’s favourite dragon, Zog, takes to the stage in a new adaptation by Freckle Productions. Based on the bestselling children’s book by Julia Donaldson, the show features brand new songs and plenty of magical tales. Zog is the keenest dragon in school and eager to win a gold star but he’s also the most accident-prone. Princess Pearl steps in to help him get ready to face his biggest challenge yet, a duel with Sir Gadabout the Great! Peppa Pig – My First Concert
Making her big Brighton Dome debut, TV superstar Peppa Pig comes to life with the musical story Peppa Pig – My First Concert. Featuring a fun and interactive live performance, young children aged 18 months and above will be delighted and amazed to see their favourite animated characters singing and dancing together on stage this Easter (Thursday 9th April). National Youth Theatre auditions
Aspiring actors are invited to audition for the National Youth Theatre (NYT) this February. Young people aged 14-25 can take part in a three-hour workshop and perform a monologue with the chance to star

hanover hanover Brighton Dome & Festival want your stories...
Memories needed for heritage project...
Were you mesmerised by Pink Floyd’s first performance of Dark Side of the Moon? Did you sneak into David Bowie’s infamous 1973 Ziggy Stardust gig as a teenager? Have you got a special memory of taking part in Brighton Festival children’s parade? Or did you ever perform on the Brighton Dome stage? Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival are asking the public to record their memorable stories as part of a new heritage project, I Was There. The interviews and collection of memorabilia will be archived for future generations, and selected stories will be presented in an online exhibition and feature in a public programme of tours and talks at Brighton Dome.

Kate Richardson, Participatory Interpretation Manager at Brighton Dome, said: “We’d love to hear people’s unique recollections or from anyone who has a special connection to Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival – whether it was 50 years ago or more recently. hanover The Brighton Half Marathon is back on 23rd February…
Grand Brighton Half Marathon celebrates 30 years
The Grand Brighton Half Marathon celebrates its 30th anniversary this month, marking a very special race year for the much-loved half marathon. Organisers have some exciting plans up their sleeves to mark the big birthday on Sunday 23rd February. Race Director Martin Harrigan commented: “This year is going to be a great year as we celebrate our 30th anniversary. We’ve got a very special medal, we’ll be welcoming back runners from the race’s history plus some exciting new race ambassadors including Brighton’s own Norman Cook.” The Grand Brighton Half Marathon race is organised by Brighton-based charity The Sussex Beacon, which provides specialist support and care for people living with HIV through both inpatient and outpatient services. The charity helps hundreds of people living with HIV in Sussex and the race is the charity’s largest annual event. The Sussex Beacon Chief Executive, Bill Puddicombe, commented: “The Grand Brighton Half Marathon is a big day for the Sussex Beacon, but also for all the other charities who take part and fundraise on the day. There are so many different ways to get involved – as a runner, as a relay team, or as a volunteer helping out on the day. It is the thousands of people that turn up, participate and cheer on the runners who create the party atmosphere for this great event.” The Grand Brighton Half Marathon has become one of the most popular races in the UK since its first event in the 1990s. The race is supported for the third year by The Grand Hotel, which sits in the middle of the 13.1-mile route.

Andrew Mosley, General Manager at The Grand Brighton, said: “It’s a real pleasure to have our hotel sit in the centre of the race course for an event that’s so special to the Brighton community. It’s always wonderful to see runners coming together in support of Sussex Beacon and many other great causes, and we can’t wait for 2020’s race to begin. Fingers crossed for good weather, and even better race times!” The race starts on Madeira Drive at 9.30am, heading east as far as Ovingdean, then back west to Hove Lagoon, before returning to the finish on Madeira Drive, and you can cheer for the runners at various locations in Brighton and Hove. Raise Your Hanbo in Hanover with Bujinkan Brighton Dojo If you think a Subarito is something tasty from a certain sandwich shop then you might be surprised! Join instructor Jake Sharpstone on a new four week beginners course in Bujinkan martial arts. Get healthier, have fun, learn self-defence and practise a real martial art all at the same time. The Bujinkan Dojo is an international martial arts organisation incorporating 3 Ninja schools (Ryu) and 6 Samurai schools with the headquarters (Honbu) based in Japan, headed by the current Grandmaster (Soke) Dr Masaki Hatsumi. His student of 30 years Jake Sharpstone, 15th Dan, is now teaching classes at the Hanover Centre. The classes offer a fascinating insight into hundreds of years’ tradition, passed down consecutively and developed for 34 generations. The martial art has evolved through the years to be as applicable today as it was on the ancient battlefields, then used by the Ninja and Samurai of the time. The approach is to practise and learn methods and techniques for preserving one’s body and maintaining the peace, through gentle exercise learning good movements. It is very different from sport martial arts in that the methods learnt and used are for realistic situations and therefore must be practised slowly and carefully. Practice involves learning defence to punches, kicks and various weapons; safe practice weapons only are used in the dojo. 16 hanover A great new race for children aged 3-8 years...
Brighton Run2Music launches Scootathlon This May, Brighton Run2Music on Madeira Drive will be including an extra race especially for children aged 3–8 years. The Scootathlon, which is already part of the Brighton and Hove Triathlon weekend, is now going to be included in the sister event Run2Music on Madeira Drive on Saturday 30 May.
Race Director John Lunt said, “Brighton Run2Music lends itself to offer children a race too just like we do for the Brighton and Hove Triathlon. It’s fantastic seeing the really young ones taking part. Multi-sport such as Scootathlon requires multiple skills and encourages determination, but most importantly, it’s an extremely fun way to keep youngsters healthy and active.” One of the parents whose son did the Scootathlon at the Triathlon said, “This was Jackson’s first multi-sport race at the age of eight. I couldn’t believe his competitive spirit. He has now found a passion for Triathlon and competed for the first time this year.” As a fully inclusive event, Run2Music offers a day of fancy dress fun, a live DJ playing music on speakers which line the course, dance acts and an entertaining warm-up on the Brighton Run2Music stage, all whilst participants run 5k, 10k or 21k chip-timed. Scootathlon is for 3-8 year olds and comprises a scoot, a bike and a run (100m, 200m or 300m, depending on the child’s age). www.brightonrun2music.com/scootathlon A few ideas for saving energy in your home...
Planet-Friendly Tips These are Friends of the Earth’s top tips for saving energy at home (see more at friendsoftheearth.uk).
If you have any tips of your own you’d like to share with us, we’d love to hear them - email us at info@ hanoverdirectory.co.uk. Insulate your home – a third of heat escapes through the walls of our homes. Install low-carbon heating – switching to the best eco-heating option, a heat pump, can cut your emissions by up to 60%. Get solar panels – they will probably pay for themselves in around 10 years. Glaze windows and doors – 10% of heat is lost through windows. Draught-proof your home – 15% of heat is lost through draughts.

17 17 A councillor report from David Gibson, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove...
Councillor News...David Gibson
I am still reeling from the general election. Despite Brighton and Hove electing Labour and Green MPs, with big majorities, the country as a whole turned very blue. I worry that now important worker and environmental protections will be eroded (under Brexit) and that the national response to the climate emergency will slow to a snail’s pace. Here we press on; the city council declared a climate emergency (with a goal of carbon neutrality by 2030) and as finance spokesperson for the Greens I will be working hard over the next few weeks to find the resources needed to move faster towards this goal (without sacrificing vital council services in other areas). Though the Greens are the official opposition on the council, we are committed to working with Labour to tackle the climate crisis and we are also committed to working together on a jointly agreed programme on housing and homelessness. I am writing this the day after “hump day”, which is the day each year, in the middle of January, when people are supposed to be most “fed up”; ironically I left housing committee with a spring in my step. By working together Share the Roads, Brighton & Hove

Launch of a Neighbourhood Action Plan at the Phoenix Estate
with Labour, I secured an extra £3.5 million in the budget to achieve around an additional 15 council homes next year. Money to rejuvenate a programme of solar panels on council buildings was also agreed; committee agreed to fund a ground source heat pump system at a senior housing scheme saving both the council and residents money and also to buy a block so the council can provide much needed decent emergency housing for homeless people rather than rely on expensive private landlords. “Hump day” blues were further banished today at a heartening partnership meeting on the Phoenix Estate. Here we have produced the city’s first local neighbourhood action plan bringing together partners to work with the community association to amongst other things keep graffiti at bay, develop plans to revitalise the ball park area and devise an exciting community garden growing project. The only grey cloud is the ongoing frustration of residents with missed bin and recycling collections. I fear that historically poor industrial relations, stretching back over many council administrations and recently exacerbated by severe cuts to staff under austerity, will continue to mean service improvements won’t be easy. But, I do hope that by the time you read this, things have improved!! The Hanover Directory is happy to publish views on local issues. A new exhibition at Brighton Museum...
A Prince’s Treasure...
100 First Women Portraits...
Items lent by the Queen from the Royal Collection include majestic 15-foot high porcelain pagodas and the Kylin Clock, an extraordinary golden extravaganza featuring turquoise Chinese lions. The Royal Collection loan of more than 124 decorative items has The Kylin Clock from the Royal Collection Trust returned to the Royal Pavilion while extensive © Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2019 building work is being carried out in the East Wing at Buckingham Palace. All the items were originally commissioned or bought by the Prince Regent, who later became George IV. He transformed a former lodging house into an extravagant, exotic palace inspired by a romantic vision of Chinese and Indian design. This unique project shows the Royal Pavilion as it looked before the items were moved to Buckingham Palace by Queen Victoria in 1847 when it was thought the Royal Pavilion might be demolished. 1919 An exciting project to restore Brighton’s last remaining tram...
Brighton Tram 53...
Brighton Corporation Tramways ran for 38 years from 1901 until 1939. Of the 116 tram cars built by the corporation at their Lewes Road Depot, only one, number 53, still survives. Number 53 was built in 1937 and, after only two years of running, was sold to a West Sussex farm where she remained until the 1970s. For the next three decades she sat in a shed, untouched, until in 2010 the Brighton Tram 53 Society was formed to restore her. The restoration of Tram 53 has been moving ahead at a dizzying pace over the past year and is now awaiting the completion of many years of hard work by the team of volunteers and fundraisers. Currently the tram body is awaiting the fitting of two staircases and the installation of the electric lighting; plus the fitting of the individually sponsored top deck seating and handrails. When this is completed the car will begin to look as it would have done in 1938. We have two 90+ year old members who remember the working trams, and have inspected and approved the work so far!! When the car is finished, with seats, lighting, window curtains etc, the next big and expensive The Green Party councillors for Hanover & Elm phase is to overhaul/restore the truck, wheels, electric motor and braking systems. So here we are, 2020. Pivotal times, we know so much needs to change and it can seem overwhelming. What keeps us relatively sane at Hanover Action is doing what we can with others in our community. Yes, we are frustrated that cuts to council services mean that it is really hard to get trees planted locally even when we raise the money - but we will work around and with others.
Yes, the Cityclean contract is maddening and a lot of our recycling incinerated - but is anyone interested in building on people’s desire to pass on unwanted household stuff? What about a sheltered book and other swap area in the Southover Street recycling area? Last year, Hanover Action was instrumental in the council’s declaring a “global climate and biodiversity emergency”. This year we will be holding our councillors to account and working to

2525 Many congratulations to Peter Burrows for his award for services to the local community…
Peter Burrows awarded BEM
Peter Burrows of St Luke’s Church in Queen’s Park Road has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year Honours for services to the community. Peter is a retired churchwarden and for more than 40 years he has been a recycling leader, a charity fundraiser, and has grown flowers and vegetables to be sold outside the church. He is also an allotment representative for Brighton & Hove City Council.
Shelagh McGillicuddy, who nominated Peter for the award, said: “Peter is well known throughout the area. If people in the community don’t know Peter by name, one just has to mention the man with the wheelbarrow and then they know who you mean. Peter has inspired the whole community by his hard working and relentless example to work for the good of other people. “Peter has raised many thousands of pounds for charity over the last 40 years. This includes at least £1,000 every year for Christian Aid, much more for St Luke’s Church. In collections for Emergency Disaster We all need someone who is on our side

“Peter has created an open and splendid garden in front of St Luke’s Vicarage which is admired by families on their way to and from school, those waiting at the bus stops and so many people who cycle or walk past on their way to work, or the city centre. Peter is often found chatting to the folk of the community as he tends and nurtures the flowers and plants on a regular basis.” We asked Peter how he felt when he heard about the award. He said: “I was shocked and I couldn’t believe it. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve it.”
