hanover The latest musings of Hanover Dad....
Hanover Dad...January Retox May I take this opportunity to wish you all a happy New Year. Did you enjoy Christmas? Did you eat and drink a little bit more than you should? I know, I usually do, but not this year. Against all probability, I kept myself vaguely fit last year and I took it pretty easy over Christmas, as I worked for most of it. I have a strange sense of January smugness about me, but all I’m hearing from my wife and friends is, “I’ve put on so much weight over Christmas, I must go on a diet and only live on fresh air, fruit and plankton for the next month,” and “I’ve drunk so much wine, I really need to stop drinking forever and join a monastery.” They don’t bother me though, as statements like those are usually said by me at this time of year, right before I spend £300 on a fruit blender and 50 kilos of carrots and wheatgrass. This January though I’m going to buck the trend. Instead of a January detox, I’m going to have a January retox. It’s going to be great, I’m excited! I’m going to stock up on pork pies and lager for the fridge and I’m going to buy all the discounted Christmas chocolate I can find. Whilst my lovely wife only eats spiralized courgettes and all my mates are on the wagon, I’m going to ride my wagon up Southover Street and go to the pub, via the fish and chip shop. I think the people of Hanover should join me; let’s make January fun! Whilst the rest of the world forks out for short-lived gym memberships and neverto-be-worn lycra, why don’t we eat too many pork scratchings, pack out the pubs, drink gin, and make bad midweek decisions for the whole of the month? Before you say, “That Hanover Dad bloke has properly lost it this time” – I have a rationale for my January Retox. Firstly it’ll be fun and, secondly, we

can all take it easy and detox in February. We can stop the booze and the battered sausages and hit the beetroot smoothies for that month, as the good thing about February is that it’s only 29 days long, meaning less suffering. It also means that when Valentine’s Day arrives I have a genuine excuse not to go out (only joking, honey, honest). Steve Rust Hanover Dad

Two years ago Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team (HEGLAT) started a residents’ group to work on ideas. From local surveys and talking to residents and businesses, the majority of those who have responded have indicated they are now interested in a CPZ and the council have agreed to work with HEGLAT to come up with a plan which will suit as many people as possible. In January the council will be carrying out an initial consultation in the area, with a view to confirming whether a plan would now be a popular measure, and also to get some idea as to what sort of scheme might work best. The aim of any scheme is to stop outsiders using the area as a free car park, whilst being as user friendly as possible to residents, their visitors and local businesses, shops and pubs. This first consultation will ask two basic questions: Do you want any sort of parking plan in your area? And, if so (or if a majority of residents vote for a plan), which scheme would you prefer? Below are three possible schemes which have been outlined by residents working with HEGLAT. All three schemes, incidentally, are intended to include provision for Pay-and-Display bays, visitors’ permits and special arrangements for shops, pubs and other businesses. SCHEME A - ALL DAY Restricted parking 9am – 8pm Possible Pros This heavily restricted scheme is simple to enforce and is the strongest deterrent to people parking in the area without a permit, without buying a ticket, or without using a visitor’s voucher. Possible Cons This is the least flexible scheme for residents and means there is no free parking throughout the day for visitors, clients, customers, carers and friends. SCHEME B - TWO PERIODS IN THE DAY For example: 10am-11am and 2pm-3pm Possible Pros This is the least restrictive option. For most of the day residents would be able to have visitors, clients, carers and friends parking for FREE.

ocal Action Team - Parking in Hanover
rking into Hanover received a definite thumbs down. Since then, with parking becoming increasingly nsider whether a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) might in fact now be a good idea. Commuters and outsiders would not be able to park and leave their vehicles all day, all week, all month or longer as happens now. Possible Cons Easier for determined offenders to cheat the system, but still a deterrent to most people.
We must also emphasise that this is only a first stage consultation. If support for a plan is positive, then later in the year the council will carry out a much more detailed consultation, including possible road and pavement improvements, one-way streets etc.
SCHEME C - THREE PERIODS DURING THE DAY For example: 10am-11am, 2pm-3pm and 7pm-8pm Possible Pros This scheme is still flexible and for most of the day residents would still be able to have visitors, clients, carers and friends parking for FREE. The additional restricted hour between 7pm and 8pm would help when many residents have said it is difficult to park, eg when returning from work. Possible Cons Again, possible for determined offenders to cheat the system, but still a deterrent to most people. Indications from local areas which have adopted schemes similar to B or C are that they have been effective. We recognise that one scheme may not suit the whole ward. Variations will therefore likely be possible across different parts of the area. We now need your views, and we would really encourage you, when the council’s survey comes through your door, to respond. The more people who respond, the better.

Music and Wine at St Luke’s Winter Series Happy New Year and welcome back after the Christmas break. We’re having a short break and will return at the end of January.
On Friday 29th January we will host prize-winning pianist Ryan Drucker from the Royal Northern College of Music. This recital includes Scarlatti sonatas and Schumann’s Fantasie, a colourful and passionate work which reflects the difficult time in the composer’s relationship with his future wife. We are also planning some exciting fundraising events for our piano restoration fund – watch this space for more details. Happy New Year to you all...
...and thank you especially to everyone who contributed towards a great year for the Hanover Centre during 2015. We saw some much-needed improvements to the building, including a new heating system, energy efficient lighting, safer staircase, and decoration. The annual Beer Festival was the most successful yet, raising £8,000 towards centre funds. There is still more we would like to achieve and you could help by getting involved. New trustees and other volunteers are very welcome. Please get in touch if you would like to know more about how the centre is run, and let us know if you have skills you can offer to the team.
We have a varied programme of classes running, some well-established and some brand new, so keep in touch for updates on what’s going on at your community centre to suit you. Or perhaps you’d like to put on an event yourself? Come and talk to us about your idea...

hanover Here is another worthwhile local scheme...
The Real Junk Food Project - Brighton The concept is a simple one: intercept food waste from supermarkets, restaurants, food banks and local businesses that was destined for landfill and use it to feed people who need it, on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis - not just homeless people but anyone struggling financially. The revolutionary ‘pay as you feel’ concept encourages people to think about what that plate of food means to them; if they can’t afford to pay money, then they may want to wash up or weigh some intercepted food or spread the word.
The Real Junk Food Project Brighton has been running for just under a year. In this time we have saved over 17 tonnes of edible food from landfill and fed thousands of people. We help individuals who are suffering from social isolation, loneliness and other mental health issues; our community cafés aim to provide a safe space for those who need it. We also are working on providing formal training for our core team therefore improving their chances of gaining employment.
So far we have two weekly cafés and a monthly pop-up, and a vast number of volunteers to help. We need food, help and support and hungry people to feed. We are a community interest company with the intention of using Government funding to expand and grow. Please get in touch to get involved. We cook a range of healthy fresh dishes from whatever ingredients are available on the day. Our volunteer teams are very creative and most of the dishes are vegetarian/vegan.

The project came about in Brighton after our founder Adam Buckingham saw the project happening in Leeds where the creator of The Real Junk Food Project, Adam Smith, lives, and where they have 23 successful cafés running. Every Friday we run a café from One Church, Gloucester Place. Every Thursday we are at Hollingdean Community Centre and on the first Wednesday of the month we are at The Hive, Stoneham Park, Hove. We also regularly cater for different events all over the city. We recently catered for MPs at The Houses of Parliament as they discussed the Food Waste Bill.
We are currently looking for our own premises to run a seven-day-a-week café and community space. If anyone knows of a space that we could use, please contact us: realjunkfood@gmail.com LET’S REALLY FEED THE WORLD. to advertise, please call 01273 551021 or visit www.hanoverdirectory.co.uk

Whether you’re looking for a new or used Apple product, require a helping hand to learn how to use your new Mac or iDevice, or need to get your current Apple kit repaired, MacMan is happy to come to your rescue and give you independent advice that will best suit you, not the Apple empire. At the heart of MacMan’s Apple enthusiasm is a passion for giving Apple products the longevity they were designed to endure. As Apple kit is top-ofthe-line with a price tag to match, getting the most out of your Apple gear is very important – both for your pocketbook and the environment. It’s for this reason that MacMan has built an extensive training programme to teach their engineers to efficiently repair Apple products using genuine OEM (original equipment manufacturer) components and are
committed to standing by their work with a MacMan three-month warranty on their repairs.

Here is something interesting you may like to get involved with...
Oral History Project
Do you know someone with a story to tell about Brighton in the 1940s-60s? Giddy, a Brighton oral history project, is looking for people who were teenagers during the 1940s60s to come and share their stories at a series of open workshops – the next one being 20th January 2016, 10am to 2pm, at the Mass Observation Archive at The Keep. The stories will be used to create a two-part digital project, including a smartphone app and an online archive; and an exhibition – all of which will launch to the public in May 2016. The app will take users on a tour of Brighton, with the personal stories acting as the guide to places of interest, offering a history of Brighton direct from the mouths of the people who lived it. Giddy was conceived by Brighton arts collective The Nimbus Group who have received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help young people from Longhill High School in Rottingdean to learn new skills in archive research, curating, conservation and oral history interviewing. Working with the Mass Observation Archive and the Oral History Society, the young people involved will

help recruit and interview participants via the open workshops who will share their stories, and then create the app and online archive. Jamie Wyld, co-Director of The Nimbus Group, says they’re looking for people to recount unusual and personal stories: ‘We’ve heard tales of rationing and mods & rockers before, but usually from the perspective of historians and the media. What we’re keen to hear about are stories that young people today can relate to: a first kiss in a dance hall, love in the face of possible German invasion, being gay in the 1950s, and what it was really like to be part of the mod scene here.
‘Each and every generation of young people thinks it’s the only one to have experienced the giddy highs and lows of adolescence – we want to show that this is a universal theme, instilling a greater sense of understanding between young and old whilst preserving some amazing stories which otherwise may well be lost forever.’
Giddy’s organisers hope those who do decide to come along to share their stories will also take along a photo or other piece of memorabilia associated with that period of their lives. These will be used alongside archive images of Brighton & Hove through the war and post-war decades to create a fascinating online archive for future generations to enjoy. To find out more about how you can get involved, like Giddy on Facebook at www. facebook.com/giddy-brighton, and follow on Twitter @NimbusGrp #GiddyBrighton. to advertise, please call 01273 551021 or visit www.hanoverdirectory.co.uk

Brought to you by the Hanover Action for Sustainable Living...
Zero Waste - One Planet Living in Hanover & Elm Grove It’s launching…. Hanover Action for Sustainable Living feature each month of 2016 with a dedicated focus on each principle of One Planet Living. This month, given the seasonal overload, it’s Zero Waste. So for the older amongst us, ‘Remember you’re a Womble’ may bring back memories of the 1970s, but being a Womble is an excellent New Year’s resolution. There are many locally who will assist us. Those in the council are some of our best Wombles, but also the wonderful local www.magpie.coop who are Womble stars with the Shabitat upcycling facilities; they can help where the council can’t. Get more tips at www.brightgreenpenguin.com/blog/2015/11/18/ reduce-reuse-recycle.
So what to do with the post-Xmas waste? The trees to The Level, recycle paper/cardboard in our recycling boxes. Too much? Hop along to our local containers (Hanover Centre, The Level, the middle and bottom of Elm Grove, and in Queen’s Park Road). Unwanted presents? Donate unwanted things to Rockinghorse or British Heart Foundation. Their charity bags appear pretty quickly after the season through the letterbox, or use the local charity shops.
Just make sure stuff is clean, unbroken, and drop off inside the shop not outside. Finally, you are going to clear that loft too? (The main barrier to insulating our homes properly.) That’s excellent! Loft clearance, clearing and cleaning our streets, or loving the green spaces, are all seasonal ways to meet a Wombling challenge! Following our amazing Visioning Workshop in November, we are now developing One Planet Living Action Plan for Hanover & Elm Grove. Come join in, on the evening of Tuesday 5 January and/or daytime on Saturday 23 January, and discover fun, inspiring and productive ways to make our community more sustainable. Further details at www.hasl.org.uk.
People’s Bike Ride to Paris
HASL joined over 150 cyclists on their leg to Newhaven to show support for their cycle to the Paris climate conference.
Those going all the way to Paris included Hanover residents who are urging world leaders to listen to the people and make legally binding agreements on carbon emissions and so put the world on a more sustainable footing by 2050 - limiting temperature rises to 1.5 degrees. (That is only half a degree more than the man-made climate change arising from industrialisation already.) To advertise call 01273 551021 or visit www.hanoverdirectory.co.uk

Here is an interesting exhibition currently running in Brighton...
Views of Brighton & Hove in the Early 19th Century
Ireland’s Royal Brighton Gardens by George Hunt © Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove
This exhibition of prints and drawings of early 19th century Brighton & Hove at Brighton Museum has been extended until 6th March 2016. The paintings are held in the private collection of Henry Smith and in the collection of Royal Pavilion & Museums.
The exhibition shows how Brighton developed from a declining town into a fashionable seaside resort, with

rapid expansion helped by the development of the coast road by 1820. There are paintings showing past attractions such as the Chain Pier and some other grand projects which were never begun. One painting shows a proposed grand scheme in 1883 for the head of the Chain Pier to include baths, assembly rooms and restaurants. A design for a Royal Marine Palace would have incorporated the sea as an essential feature and would have surpassed even the Royal Pavilion for splendour. There are also fascinating pictures of buildings which have survived to the present day, such as a lithograph of the Royal Sussex County Hospital from 1841, with a horse-drawn cab waiting outside. The painting shown here is “Ireland’s Royal Brighton Gardens” by George Hunt. The gardens opened in May 1823, and featured a range of activities such as cricket, bowling greens, an aviary, a maze, fairground activities and an artificial lake. However, the gardens soon declined in popularity, James Ireland sold them three years later and they became overgrown. Part of the site is now a private garden for the residents of Park Crescent and you can still see the ornamental gate piers and the wall on the north side of Union Road.
The exhibition is on until 6th March at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery in the Royal Pavilion garden (closed on Mondays) and is free with Brighton Museum admission. For more information, visit: www.brightonmuseums.org.uk.
