Welcome to the December Edition of the Hanover Directory
We trust you had a lovely Christmas and we would like to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year! Due to printers being closed over Christmas, I am actually wishing you that well before the festivities have even started so it does feel a little strange. That said, New Year is a great time to reflect on the year just gone and make plans for the up-andcoming 12 months, so write down where you want to be this time next year and stick it to the fridge and see how close you can get! In the meantime we have no radical changes to the magazine this month, just the usual mix of local items. We are however formulating plans to freshen the publication up this year both in terms of how it looks as well as content.
If you get this edition through your door before New Year’s Eve, have a great celebration; if you get it afterwards we hope you have recovered! Here’s to a great 2015!! The Hanover Directory Team info@hanoverdirectory.co.uk

Here we feature a local Hanover person...
Hanover People - Iain Brown
Iain may not live in Hanover, but as our full-time sweeper, and out in all weathers, he spends a great deal of time in Hanover. With a gleam in his eye and an infectious laugh, Iain is good company. He has a pride in the area; as he puts it, “Once I start work, these streets don’t belong to the council - they are mine. And I get round each once a week.” Interestingly the hardest street to clean is Islingword Street and the easiest is next door, Southampton Street! Also easy is Lincoln Street. He thinks communal bins are a good idea, but don’t get emptied enough. Cuddly Toy Rescue Service
But Iain does more than just clean the streets - he runs Brighton’s only cuddly toy rescue service! It started by chance. A toy picked up and strapped to his barrow was spotted and the parents of a desolate child caught up with Iain to get the toy back. Now each found toy is strapped to the barrow for three months and then, if not claimed, the toys are washed and rehabilitated at the children’s hospital. Cityclean Strikes
Asked about the current dispute with Cityclean drivers, he says people he meets are not sympathetic like before. He says, “Many do not understand that it is all about 20-odd drivers that want to be paid more than half a dozen of their colleagues. The union should be for all, not just the few.”
Asked what he likes about Hanover, top is the “friendly people”. Each day 10 or so will stop and chat. “They were friendly when I did Kemp Town, but they never had time to stop and talk.” As for dislikes, there isn’t much. The hills are a bit of a nuisance. Cars and bikes blocking the pavements are a minor irritation. Surprisingly he has little complaint about the weather. Rain is fine, but high winds messing up his streets is the last straw.

Good news for all you residents who love living in Hanover because of the unique variety of local pubs...
Hanover The Greys - Returning to its Former Glory
The Greys pub at the bottom of Southover Street has a long and spectacular history of live music, great food (it once held an Egon Ronay award – the only pub in Brighton to claim this accolade if history is to be believed) and well-regarded beers. Of late, however, the pub has had a lower profile with a series of interim and temporary management teams struggling to regain its reputation and popularity. Finally, it seems a corner has been turned with the The Greys lease being acquired by Ben Hollingsworth & Chris Tsapparelli – a pair of Brighton residents intent on restoring the pub and live venue to its former glory. “We were searching for a pub with a difference, something we could nurture and develop,” said Ben. “When The Greys became available, it was clear we would simply have to push ourselves to make sure it became ours.”
Their vision to provide a community-oriented pub, family-friendly and with quality events, began with the creation of a unique two-part menu. “We offer Mediterranean-inspired dishes; think tapas, meze and what the Italians term piattini or ‘small dishes’, alongside mains for those with larger appetites,” said Chris, responsible for the menu’s development and also the day-to-day chef. “Of course, Sunday lunches are a Hanover staple, but we’ve added our own twist with Greek dishes such as kleftiko – one of my family favourites.”
Open from noon, The Greys transitions gently from lunchtime coffees and facilities for getting a little work done (free Wi-Fi, a networked colour printer and even the odd piece of tech-support, courtesy of Ben’s previous life as an IT consultant!) through to bistro-bar for early diners and into proper pub and live music venue with character and atmosphere. “Music is enormously important to me, and you’ll always find something interesting and engaging playing,” and sure enough, Ben’s enthusiasm is evident as he
starts outlining their plans for events through 2015. “It will be the pub’s 30th year of hosting live music, and whilst it built its reputation on Country, Folk and Roots, we’re expanding way past that.” Their first comedy night is in the planning stages and due 24th January, they have a resident New Music night (Tuesdays), a monthly visit by the excellent Chris & Dom (known for their Sunday Almanac DJ set in Kemp Town) beginning 17th January, and with acts such as Attila the Stockbroker already booked, they’re pushing into spoken-word and performance too. “If anyone comes to us with an idea, we’re going to discuss it. We want demand to drive bookings, the faces in Hanover and beyond to be inspirational and to want to be a part of The Greys.”

hanover The latest in the musings of Hanover Dad...
Hanover Dad... Sporting Triumph
Well, January is upon us and may I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year. This is the time of year that, through the sharp edges of detoxing and my short-lived fitness drive, I start to think about the cool things going on in our fair city in the year ahead. As usual there are some exciting events planned, including the Rugby World Cup coming to the Amex. Now I like rugby, in fact I used to play it back in the day. I wasn’t very big or strong or anything like that, but I made up for it by being slow and quite uncompetitive. To be honest I’m really more of a football fan.
I’ve tried for years to get my wife to like football, so that we could watch matches together and have a shared interest. And you know what, I nearly managed it too, and then David Beckham ruined it all by going and retiring! She tries her best now to show an interest for me and says things like, “Why don’t they pick that Cristiano Ronaldo for England? He’s really good!” and “Why don’t you stop supporting West Ham and support Brazil instead? They’re much better.” When I do manage to convince my wife to watch a game, she takes on an expression that I can only describe as that of the clichéd

rural foreigner who you ask for directions, as in they have no idea what’s going on, but they are trying to do their best with the situation.
The other Saturday afternoon though, I was watching rugby on TV and when the England team ran out onto the pitch, all of a sudden my wife became interested and said, “Ooh, who are they in the tight white shirts? Are they the dancers for before the football match starts?” – “No, honey,” I replied. “That’s the England rugby team; this is a rugby match.” - “Oh, I think I like rugby,” she said - and you know what, other than me getting cross with the 45 questions per minute and comments like, “Ha ha! Look, they’re all having a cuddle,” I think we both enjoyed watching the game together. This is good, this is progress! It means there may be a sport in this world that my wife and I can genuinely watch together, as I have told her repeatedly now that Strictly Come Dancing is most definitely not a real sport.

hanover a local service worth knowing about...
Carers Reablement Service
There are more than 24,000 carers in Brighton. The Carers Centre for Brighton and Hove provides information, support and advocacy to them. We have started a new project that will support carers to learn new skills or achieve other goals. The Carers Reablement Service is a pilot scheme designed to support carers to achieve positive changes in their lives. This will be done with the assistance of volunteers, who will help the carer to reach a clearly-defined outcome, in a period of up to ten weeks, to improve their wellbeing. Examples of these ten-week goals may include learning to use a computer, starting going to the gym, beginning a weight-loss plan, or acquiring basic cooking or car repair skills. It could also involve taking up a new hobby such as dancing, learning a musical instrument, painting, drawing, or creative writing.
The Carers Centre is therefore keen to recruit as many volunteers as possible, so that we can offer a wide range of skills and services. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Carers Centre on 01273 746222 and ask for Daniel, or email him directly on Daniel.eichner@ thecarerscentre.org.
The latest regular feature from Wine Woman....
Wine Woman
As predictable as Christmas excess is the January detox. Whilst total abstinence adds unnecessary gloom to the bleak midwinter, today’s column does suggest some fresher lighter wines, both stomach and wallet friendly. Rather than ‘de-alcoholised’ wines then, why not instead look to areas which naturally produce lower alcohol wines of note - predominantly cooler climates with shorter ripening seasons. For whites, think Vinho Verde from Portugal or a racy Albarino from Spain - both deliver freshness and flavour, perfect with a fish supper. From the New World, swap the gutsy Australian powerhouses made for summer BBQs for a quality Sauvignon Blanc - Marlborough in New Zealand produces some of the finest. Lighter definitely, but certainly without any hint of selfdeprivation. Don’t discount the reds entirely either. The temperamental thin-skinned Pinot Noir comes into its own at this time of year and, whilst basic Beaujolais can be dull, Beaujolais Villages is more rewarding - the better expressions of the Gamay grape being perfect with that endless ‘turkey au vin’. So make this January a time to explore some of these lighter styles rather than abstain - finally a resolution you can keep! Happy New Year

Here is an interesting article for all tenants living in Hanover...
Home Sweet Home
In the spring of 2013 a group of politically active locals invited the non-profit group Movement for Change to a meeting in Brighton. Movement for Change specialises in helping groups to set up and run grass-roots campaigns - a process called Community Organising. Together they identified a series of issues affecting people who rent houses in the city - and key to the problem seemed to be unhelpful managing agents. After considerable discussion and some training in campaigning methods a plan of action was created - called Home Sweet Home, it began in July 2013. A key issue was tenants’ lack of knowledge of their own rights, so a working group, including the University of Brighton’s Student Union and the Residential Landlords’ Association, worked together to produce a new guide which was published online, and has since been included on the city council’s website. As part of the campaign all 21,000 students at Brighton University will be made aware of this new guide.
The group carried out ‘secret shopper’ meetings with local letting agents, to visit houses being offered to students, check their quality and the level of service provided by the agents. This undercover operation tended to support the anecdotal information they collected in discussion with
students, where poorly maintained, sometimes dangerous equipment was frequently mentioned, as were tatty furnishings, poor security to doors and windows, and inadequate heating. These poor facilities could be overcome if letting agents acted on behalf of tenants to bring about the necessary improvements, but in the main they do not act in this way.
This year they will expand their activities beyond the student tenant group of the first year, whilst seeking ways to raise the issues and bring about improvements in the service across the city. Local groups representing residential areas in the city might see benefits to getting involved with Home Sweet Home, as many issues about streetscape are linked to absentee landlords who weaken our communities by turning homes into profit-centres, and take money out of our communities, often at the expense of the quality of our neighbourhoods. Chris Taylor, chair of the Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team said, “The private rental area is one that constantly needs a close eye kept on it and the work done by Home Sweet Home and The Movement for Change over recent years has been invaluable.”
Home Sweet Home can be reached via the Movement for Change website, www.movementforchange.org. uk/home_sweet_home/.

hanover Here is the latest column written by gardening expert, The Biking Gardener...
New year, new opportunity!!
Time to get back to the garden. One of the first jobs this January is to recycle your Christmas tree. There are loads of places to take your tree - just check the council’s website and take it to one of the designated areas.
The council will turn the trees into mulch and will spread it all over the parks and gardens’ plant beds. Now is a great time to chop back any dead material, rake up any leaves, weed and dig over the veg / flower beds. Once this is done, it is a great thing to add some mulch.
There are different types of mulches. Compost, manure and bark chips are the main three.
Just spread a thick layer of manure or compost over your beds. The mulch will feed your soil which in turn will feed your plants. The reason to add bark chip mulch is to suppress weeds, retain moisture and give the soil a boost.
Plan, plan, plan. I can’t say it enough. If you have always wanted to grow fruit and veg then make this year be the year. Build raised beds, grow in pots or join a community allotment. Brighton & Hove Food Partnership’s website bhfood.org.uk has hundreds of local community gardens that anyone can join. Maybe you would like to join a local gardening class and learn some new skills. Check the Garden House website gardenhousebrighton. co.uk, book a course and quote Biking Gardener to receive a 10% discount.
If you have any mistletoe you can rub the berries onto trees, then next year you can harvest your own.
Now that a lot of the foliage has died down or been cut back, it is a good idea to paint fences, walls, outdoor furniture, decking and sheds. This will give your garden a fresh look. For wildlife, top up bird feeders and fill up water baths. Enjoy the garden!! @bikinggardener

The Secret Heart of Hanover
The Church of the Annunciation
To mark its 150th anniversary, the Church of the Annunciation in Washington Street opens its doors to host a festival of art, music and drama. Father Michael Wells, aka Spike Wells, renowned jazz drummer, and Brighton diva Marcia Bellamy, Festival Artistic Director, invite you to discover what is happening at the Annun, the secret heart of Hanover. Regular updates on forthcoming events will appear in the Hanover Directory.
For more information: www.annunciationbrighton. org.uk or check the notice board outside the church. Hanover Action for Sustainable Living...
Free HASL film ‘Cowspiracy’ On Sunday, January 18th at 4pm, the world famous Chichester Cathedral Choir bring their unique and glorious sound to the Annunciation for an exclusive anniversary event. This is a chance to experience the grandeur of choral evensong in this intimate, candlelit setting. Join us, as the Annunciation welcomes back Raphael, now in his fourth year at Chichester, along with his fellow choristers, organist Timothy Ravalde and the new Master of Choristers, Charles Harrison, for a truly superb musical offering. This event is free. Do you know of a musical boy of 7 to 9 years of age? The cathedral are regularly auditioning potential choristers and will be happy to answer your questions at the event. The Prebendal School of Chichester Cathedral offers an outstanding education with choral scholarships.
Tues 13th January 2015, 7.30pm, at Hanover pub, 242, Queen’s Park Road This shocking yet humorous documentary reveals the absolutely devastating environmental impact large-scale factory farming has on our planet, and offers a path to global sustainability for a growing population. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry, and is a primary driver of rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion, ocean “dead zones”, and virtually every other environmental ill. Yet it goes on, almost entirely unchallenged.

Please read about a new worthwhile project run by Barnados...
Supported Lodgings... Make a difference to a young person’s life
Could you make a difference to a young person’s life in your own home? Brighton & Hove Supported Lodgings is looking for individuals or families to provide lodgings and support for vulnerable young people aged 16 to 21. All you need is a spare room and some free time to offer advice and support in your own home. Could you support a young person who is at risk of becoming homeless? This is a new project, run by Barnardo’s but where YOU make the difference. The young people will need help with basic skills such as budgeting, cooking and shopping. Supported Lodgings provides young people with a different option when faced with nowhere to go. It is an opportunity to provide a warm, welcoming home environment and a chance for a young person to get their life back on track. Similar projects have been established around the country and proved very successful, particularly in helping young people to gain skills, education or work experience. Barnardo’s can draw upon experience gained from running some of these projects and can provide expertise, advice and resources for hosts. Barnardo’s have a long history of helping the most vulnerable children and young people in society. Would you like to play a part in helping someone here in Brighton & Hove? Are you interested?

Here we bring you the latest news from the Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team...
Working Group to Produce People’s Plan for our Streets is Underway
There have now been two meetings of the newly formed HEGLAT working group of residents tasked with coming up with a plan for parking and our streets that best reflects the wishes people expressed in the survey. The working group has sub-groups working on: • • • • • • • •
Data analysis Possible parking zone proposals Vehicle spaces and numbers Street improvements (cycle racks/storage, yellow line changes) Elm Grove proposal Proposals for triangle bounded by Carlyle Street, Elm Grove and Queen’s Park Road area where there is no interest in controlled parking Possible one-way street proposals Needs of local shops and businesses
We are also keen to get more surveys back for the area north of Elm Grove (as we have very few and views may have changed in the light of the Lewes Road triangle parking zone and the preference of much of Hanover for controlled parking.
The working groups will bring their proposals to produce a plan as soon as possible over the winter period. For further information contact Chris Taylor greysland@sky.com and/or David Gibson: davidsg@ntlworld.com
