hanover Welcome to the July Edition of the Hanover Directory
Well, at the time of writing England are still in the World Cup and Wimbledon hasn’t even started, so Andy Murray is still in with a chance of retaining his title and it’s all looking good! By the time you read this however, I fear a different story!!
This month we bring you the usual mix of all things Hanover. We have a feature on Terry Horton – Terry has been a long-term advertiser with us who has taken the plunge and ditched his handyman tools and is pursuing his dream career as an artist. We have all the other usual items, as well as another item on The Church of the Annunciation on Washington Street whose stained glass window features on the front cover. Have a great start to the summer!! The Hanover Directory Team info@hanoverdirectory.co.uk www.hanoverdirectory.co.uk

5 Historical Hanover... Leicester Street
This humble little street was tucked away behind the high wall which flanked the gardens of middleclass Egremont Place.
This fine photograph of about 1912 shows a varied array of domestic washing and, in the distance, the gate giving access to Pilgrims Cottages. The sign on the wall above the women’s heads advertises the chimney sweep, whose barrow stands in the kerb. Leicester Street is still there today but bears no resemblance to how it was in 1912.

Holiday HEALTH!! Top Tips for going abroad and at home SUNSCREEN - ensure it has BOTH UVA and UVB filters and apply after sun lotion. Use a block for children/babies. Keep them out of the sun and lightly clothed - why not keep sun block/aftersun in the fridge for an extra special cooling effect AVOID wearing perfume/hairspray to keep bugs away. Use a good insect repellent with DEET AVOID 'Delhi belly' by not eating anything washed in tap water. Avoid ice made with tap
water. Always wash hands before and after eating and dry with a clean towel. Carry wipes DRINK lots of fluid to avoid dehydration and heat stroke especially with children/babies and if you are a diabetic CONDOMS are still the best way to avoid bringing back Sexually Transmitted Infection or pregnancy. Carry your own condoms with a British standard kite mark Ensure you carry all your prescription medication. Put in a prescription request early.
Do you need Malaria prophylaxis or Vaccinations? Local Artist...
Terry Horton
How long have you lived in Hanover? I have lived in the Hanover area for thirteen years now… What is the best thing about living in the area? I finally found peace in Brighton. I am local to everything I need to enjoy what is becoming a dream life. I moved to Brighton thirteen years ago, because my mum lived here. I fell in love with Brighton during those visits. We hear you are swapping from Terry Horton Handyman to Terry Horton artist! Why the swap? I have always been an artist; I started using oil paint on canvas ten years ago. I trained to be a further education teacher at the same time. I was urged by many people to be a professional artist; it seemed like too much to dream for. I worked as a part-time teacher and handyman to support my life as an artist. A life-changing event happened to me in December 2012. That’s when I knew it was time to throw myself into my artwork and make the dream become a reality… Tell us about your artwork… It appears to communicate strong messages? I work in many different styles and work with a diverse range of subject matter. I like to experiment by choosing from children as subjects, to hard-hitting political social messages. How can someone see more of your work? I am in the process of having a website built; it should

9 be ready soon (www.terryhorton.co.uk).
I have had a huge amount of national media exposure and recognition recently. I have three exhibitions currently running. These are: The Claremont Hotel in Hove
Gulliver’s Hotel in Kemp Town
Also I’m a resident artist at Q Sales & Lettings, a local estate agent who have committed to help local artists, such as myself, by displaying work in their office. When ‘Terry Horton Brighton Artist’ is entered into Google, all the listings on the first two pages are information about me. What are your aspirations for the future? My aspirations and plans for the future are to become a world-famous artist and to continue living my wonderful and enchanting dream… I am a resident artist for Studio Q (Q Sales & Lettings) and the resident artist for a charity called Cancervive.org.uk. I intend to raise the profile of both of them. Has advertising with the Hanover Directory worked well for you? Yes, it has worked extremely well for me. The Hanover Directory has supported me through some difficult times.

Team up from Macmillan Cancer Support Team Up from Macmillan Cancer Support is a new service for anyone affected by cancer in Brighton and Hove. We noticed that there are plenty of willing people who want to volunteer their time, but they don’t have a lot of it to spare. Macmillan research also showed that some people with cancer and the people who look after them could do with an extra pair of hands around the house from time to time.
Sometimes treatment knocks you for six and you’re just too tired or unable to do housework. Sometimes you’d just rather invite people round for a cup of tea and a chat than a dusting session. Sometimes there just isn’t anyone around to ask for help with the small stuff.
We wanted to find a way to squeeze some good deeds into the diaries of busy Brightonians, whilst also helping out over-stretched people living with cancer, and carers in the community. Team Up connects people with a bit of spare time with people who could use a hand with housework and gardening. Whether you want to volunteer or get some support, you register online where you can then post or search

for tasks in your neighbourhood. As a helper, you can pick up a task whenever you’ve got five minutes spare, there’s no regular commitment or obligation at all and none of them should take longer than an hour.
All our helpers are security checked and we meet them all personally. People signing up can be at any stage in their cancer journey, or looking after someone who is, and you don’t need to have received any support from Macmillan in the past.
So if you’ve got a bit of space in your life to help your neighbours out, then we’d love to hear from you.
If you’re looking around at a growing pile of washing up and an empty fridge then Team Up can help. Let us start ticking those annoying little jobs off your to-do list so you can focus on what’s important. hanover The Secret Heart of Hanover
The Church of the Annunciation Festival
To mark its 150th Anniversary, the Church of the Annunciation in Washington Street opens its doors to host a festival of art, music, and drama. Father Michael Wells, aka Spike Wells, renowned jazz drummer, and Brighton diva Marcia Bellamy, Festival Artistic Director, invite you to discover what is happening at the Annun, the secret heart of Hanover. Festival Director’s Greeting
News is now on the wing. Something is happening at the secret heart of Hanover. Look out for the wing above the big blue door in Washington Street, and on the flyers that are fluttering through your letter-box. Come and find out what all the flap is about!
We’re unpacking 150 years of the Annunciation on July 12th, with a stunning, full colour exhibition that tells the story of Hanover and its church.
To coincide with the exhibition, we are also launching a new history, ‘The Real Presence,’ which delves into the archives to reveal the Annunciation’s famous past. It is a story of riot, kidnap, and the courageous struggles of the Hanover poor in peace, pestilence and war.
There is free entrance to the exhibition, which will remain in place throughout the anniversary year. The launch will be followed by an afternoon of beer and jazz provided by the Spike Wells Trio with John Donaldson on piano. If you have never been inside your local church, this is the time to visit, when we throw open the doors to reveal ‘the secret heart of Hanover’, one of the most beautiful buildings in Brighton. Hanover Action for Sustainable Living...
Boost for sustainability:
UN recognition for Brighton’s commitment to the environment UNESCO has recognised Brighton & Hove and the surrounding area as a Biosphere*, the first such designation in the UK for forty years. ‘Brighton and Lewes Downs Biosphere’ includes a range of environments, and is one of a handful of Biosphere sites across the world that include urban areas. The accolade celebrates recent and planned work to better connect people to nature in city, downs and marine environments. The Biosphere area includes some globally unique and rich environments such as chalk grassland on the South Downs, vegetated shingle beaches, and undersea chalk reefs. It’s also home to more than 200 species internationally recognised as in need of conservation. The successful bid, steered by Brighton & Hove City Council, is also supported by organisations as diverse as the city’s two universities, Brighton & Hove Allotment Federation, Jury’s Inn Hotel and Southern Railway. Councillor Pete West, Chair of the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee, said: “I’ve always been struck by the pride local people have in our special environment, so I’m delighted that we’ve been granted what I
look forward to winter
see as the natural equivalent of a world heritage site. “It’s about more than just the green spaces over in the national park, and mitigating against climate change – it’s also about increasing biodiversity within our city for all our benefit. We’re already encouraging wildlife in our parks and green spaces for example, but our ongoing work and the attention this award brings will attract visitors and investment to our region. “Biosphere status adds to our ambitious work on sustainability as the world’s first One Planet City. But it also gives us the opportunity to raise more awareness about our environment locally, puts us on the world map as a place to visit and invest, and it opens the door to attracting more funding to the city. “Our Biosphere will help everyone learn about and enjoy the wealth of nature on our doorsteps, and set us up for exciting opportunities ahead.” *A Biosphere is an area internationally recognised by UNESCO as a leader in balancing conservation and development. The Brighton and Lewes Downs Biosphere is the block of land and sea between the River Adur at Shoreham in the west and the River Ouse at Newhaven in the east.

Time for a “Living Rent”
When a private tenant in Sandown Road got a leaflet about the council bringing in a living wage, her first thought was...great, providing you can afford the rent!! She contacted the Green candidate, David Gibson, in the Hanover and Elm Grove by-election, with the idea of having a living rent as well. Months later she joined with him, other private tenants and supporters, to set up the Living Rent Campaign. The campaign started in Hanover and Elm Grove and is now spreading across the city. The situation in the private rented sector in Brighton and Hove is getting desperate. Rents increased by 27% last year. Some renters pay more than half of their income in rent; many face constant insecurity having to move on every six months. Others sense unfairness, like one campaign member living off Elm Grove, who has paid nearly £200,000 in rent for a house her landlord bought for £28,000 and has been so neglected that it was condemned by Environmental Health. She works parttime and volunteers, and relies on the food bank. Despite having a more secure tenancy she is now facing eviction on the day her daughter starts secondary school! The Living Rent Campaign wants: • •
National controls on rent rises Legislation for longer, more secure, tenancies • Local action to set up ethical landlord and ethical lettings schemes • Longer-term action to achieve fairer rents. A petition has been launched to achieve a debate at council and a public meeting
called with our MP and chair of housing. If you want to help the campaign in any way, please email David Gibson at davidsg@ntlworld.com. Living Rent Event A5 July 2014 - AW.pdf

Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team
Updates for the Community
Prompted by missed collections, the last meeting heard from Cityclean about the difficulties getting collections from narrow streets and the breakdowns of the smaller dustcarts that have made this worse.
Last Meeting
We were also told it was expected that it would take some time to get the new rounds established and it was accepted that there is still a way to go to get things running smoothly again. Cityclean agreed to return to our October meeting to hear from us how things are progressing.
Neighbourhood Survey latest
Thanks to the many people who completed the neighbourhood survey on our streets, transport and parking in Bonchurch Road, Lincoln Street, Franklin Road, Toronto Terrace, Hallett Road and Belgrave Street. We had a really high return of over 60% in Hallett Road, Lincoln Street, Toronto Terrace and Belgrave Street, so we can be quite confident about representativeness. We will report fuller results later. Many issues are shared between streets; however there are very different views on the controversial topic of parking controls. It appears that residents north of Elm Grove and east of Queen’s Park Road want to keep things as they are, whereas residents in Lincoln Street, Toronto Terrace and Belgrave Street want to look into controls of some kind. Before starting to see if we can come up with a community plan for those areas that might want some changes, the last HEG LAT meeting felt we should try and survey more roads, and try and get a fuller picture of what people want. We are particularly keen to see what people’s views are in the streets between Islingword Road and Elm Grove, and would also like more from roads in between Islingword Road and
Southover Street. So if you would like to see your road surveyed AND can help, please contact: Chris on greysland@sky.com or David on davidsg@ntlworld.com
Next Meeting
The next HEG LAT meeting will be on Monday 4th August at 7pm in the Hanover Pub, Queen’s Park Road. The main topic will be the review of local bus services, and Mike Best of Brighton and Hove Buses will be there to take questions.

Thank goodness, after a month off Hanover Dad is back...
Hanover Dad...Shed
Love
A few months ago I wrote an article about having to accept that I am a grown-up. Well, it is 100% official that I am now a grown-up, as I have just bought myself a shed. A real shed, in the back garden, made of wood. I can’t quite believe it. I have a man-shed! My granddad had a shed and he was probably the most grown-up man I’ve ever met. He was the kind of sensible man who always wore a suit on a Sunday, and checked that all the wheels were on his car before he got into it, because that is what was written in the manual. My granddad loved his shed and I love mine. I didn’t think it would be possible for this kind of love to exist between a man and a wooden structure, but it can. (That does actually sound quite strange now that I’ve said it out loud.) I feel like I now have a place to call my own, like early man must have felt when he discovered a cave to live in. I can do what I like in there. Did you know that drinking Stella in your shed is illegal in Kuwait? Well, it’s not in mine. I make the rules in the man-shed! Did you also know that International Shed Week runs from the 7th – 13th July? I appreciate that this coincides with both semi-finals and the final of the World Cup in Rio, but I think I know which event will really be grabbing the nation’s attention. My wife said to me, “I’m glad you like your shed. Maybe I can put some bits in there as well?” I looked at her in horror and replied, “A shed is to a man what a handbag is to a woman – both contain all the essentials for surviving in the modern world, and in the same way that no decent man would ever consider looking in a woman’s handbag uninvited, so no reasonable woman would dream of setting foot in a man’s shed.” I won’t repeat all the words that she said to me, but it was along the lines of, “Well, if you really love that shed so much

then why don’t you just move in there permanently?” I know she didn’t mean it really though, at least I hope she didn’t, and I’m sure she’ll let me out soon, as padlocking me in the shed was just a joke, right……?
Deadline for articles for the August issue is 15th July 2014 but it is an idea to call ASAP to reserve a space.
