Welcome to the July Edition of the Hanover Directory So Summer is really here now and July is upon us with the school holidays scheduled to start before the end of the month. Those of you with children will be in the more advanced stages of planning your survival strategy for the six week break so good luck with that!
So what have we for you this month? This month we have the first interview with one of the local councillors elected by the area in the recent elections. This will roll out over the next month or so with each councillor getting a chance to feature. Also we bring you lots of local news about what’s going on. Parking is a hot topic and a proposal for Hanover becoming a controlled parking area is outlined on page 12. We also have news of a local street party and a Jumble Trail and lots of the other usual regular slots. Hope you have a great July!

Removing the original elm trees, work in progress, about 1938. Planting of these trees started in March 1852. They were the gift of the Earl of Chichester, who also provided the large trees surrounding the Level. The present trees date from after the Second World War. The scene is outside Elm Grove School.

On Friday 17th July pianist and composer Manuel Lopez-Jorge returns to St Luke’s. Mozart’s Sonata in C minor KV 457 will contrast with the contemporary sonorities from “Transforming”, by Brighton’s Guy Richardson. The folklore of southern Spain will sound through Albéniz’s beautiful Suite Iberia and the recital concludes with Chopin’s Sonata no. 2 - Funeral march. On Friday 31st July viola player Mark Gibbs and pianist Christopher Atkinson present Schumann’s ‘Märchenbilder’, followed by the passionate sonata in F minor, by Brahms. The programme concludes with Shostakovich’s sonata for viola and piano. All concerts start at 7.30pm. Wine and refreshments are served. For more information, visit www.stlukesconcerts.webeden.co.uk . The first in a series of interviews with the recently elected local councillors in Hanover…
Meet Hanover & Elm Grove Councillor David Gibson David was elected in May as a Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove. What part of Hanover do you live in? I have lived on Islingword Road since 1995. What is your background? I was born in Yorkshire in 1959, soon becoming a Huddersfield Town fan. At 18, I went to university, then moved to London, alternating between jobs and community action. Following an MSc in politics/political sociology, I moved to Brighton working as a community worker. My partner Sarah and I brought up two boys in Hanover, both working part time and sharing child care. A proud achievement was to set up the “daylight robbery campaign” which changed the law to give greater financial fairness for council tenants. What made you want to become a councillor? As a disillusioned ex-Labour Party member, I had spent many years campaigning on single issue campaigns before being inspired to join the Greens by Caroline Lucas. I am proud of many of the last Green minority administration’s achievements, such as: • The Living Wage and spreading it outside of the council more than any other council. • Being the first One Planet Living city. • Reducing the ratio of top pay to bottom pay on the council to 10:1. In doing this, Greens show things can be done differently and I want to play a part in this. I love living in Hanover and am enthusiastic about working for our area. As a founder of the Living Rent campaign, I want to use my influence as Green spokesperson on the housing committee to make a practical difference in private rented housing as well as support new truly affordable council homes.
What do you hope to achieve in Hanover over the next four years? I hope to: • Continue to support the community plan for parking and street improvements. • Support more street parties and community events strengthening ties between neighbours. • Explore whether we as a community can work with the council to improve recycling rates in Hanover and, if we succeed, get some share of the extra income. What are your interests outside politics? I love walking, theatre, football, sitting in our allotment, and trying to make sense of life (sometimes over a pint of real ale!) I also get a buzz from lively community meetings that go well! How can people contact you? Best to phone me on 07985 878 629 or email me at david.gibson@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

ROOF & FIREWALL Specialists Have you got damp in the corner of a bedroom or along the ceiling of an upstairs wall? Nine times out of ten it’s faulty lead flashings and firewalls causing these problems. The majority of Brighton homes are at least 100 years old and so are their firewalls. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.

hanover Here we bring you the latest news from the Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team...
Hanover & Elm Grove Local Action Team Outline CPZ Proposal
Background: The Hanover & Elm Grove Local Action Team did a survey of 36 streets with 1,101 surveys returned. From those, residents have shown us that on a ratio of about 2:1 they are in favour of “some kind of CPZ”.
1) Medium Touch Scheme for Central Hanover A Medium Touch Scheme covering central Hanover - the area bordered by Albion Hill, Queen’s Park Road, Elm Grove and Lewes Road - with restricted parking hours 10–11am, 2–3pm and 7–8pm for 7 days a week. This would leave nine hours during the day for people to have visitors for FREE. Features for the scheme should include:
a. Pay and Display during each restricted hour and only during that restricted hour. No roll-over to the next one. Available in 30 minute increments also. b. Bays available near businesses and shops FREE for up to 30 mins.
c. Extra permits for self-employed people with a van + private vehicle. People’s livelihoods are at stake. d. More one-way streets – enabling more parking on both sides of the road.
e. “Passing points” in certain streets where two-way traffic is maintained. f. Proper secure bike storage as well as open racks.
g. “Floating permits” for businesses who have a need for several vehicles to be around their premises, such as garages and businesses with a fleet of vehicles. These permits are transferable between vehicles. i. The Triangle ie: Carlyle St, Lynton St, Arnold St, Baxter St, Cromwell St.

An area with very specific needs due to the narrowness of the roads and because, in the original council consultation 2010, they were going to lose so many spaces. Compromises through working with residents are going to have to be found or residents here won’t want to be part of the plan. j. A proposal for people on Council Tax Benefit to be able to pay half of full cost of a permit. k. More traffic calming to slow traffic on rat-runs. l. Possibility of chevron parking in other streets wide enough to accommodate it. There is enough parking space for all residents’ cars should they wish to have a permit. 2) Elm Grove, Beyond and Pankhurst The council must look at layout and parking on Elm Grove as part of the overall plan. Consider chevron parking as a way of improving parking capacity. It is allowed already towards the top of the road so why not towards the bottom. Safety issues are less severe thanks to the 20mph speed limit. The plan for Elm Grove that was not considered by the Transport Committee should be looked at again.
Whilst residents north of Elm Grove have some difficulty parking, they are currently looking at whether they want a Light Touch scheme with

1313 restricted hours of 11am-12pm and 7pm-8pm alongside the medium touch. North of Elm Grove is being consulted now. The Pankhurst Estate and IOW Triangle (Carisbrooke, Ryde, Sandown, Totland, St Helen’s Rd) need full community survey/consultation asap… These areas to have the option of joining after ONE year if they want stay out to start with.
Each road needs to be looked at individually as needs differ widely. The community did not want to make it any more difficult for tradesmen to come and do work at their houses. Ideas for street improvements Any CPZ in Hanover and Elm Grove will generate a lot of income for the council in the long run and so it is a one-off chance for residents to get some street improvements as part of the package. Your ideas
are welcome! Investment in Elm Grove and other street enhancements suggested by residents should be part of the package. What next? A representation will be made to the council in July. This will be followed by more meetings with council officers on further details of the possible scheme. There will then be public meetings and displays of diagrams of a scheme with the opportunity for more feedback from residents. This will finally be followed by a full council consultation and vote on a final CPZ proposal. The estimated time for implementation of a CPZ if it is accepted by residents would be mid-2016.
HASL explores shared visions with local councillor candidates
25 HASL supporters joined Green and Labour ward candidates in April to discuss visions for the area. Key themes included:
· · · · ·
Problems with lack of affordable housing, parking and rubbish. Could we create a community hub for shared skills, tools etc, plus sharing of surplus food and preventing waste? Can the local community build greater knowledge of sustainability issues? Can we green the streets with trees and plants? Can community groups work together, perhaps reviving Hanover Day?

Could HASL, Hanover Community Association and the HEG LAT work together? It was great to see our ward candidates in positive conversation with each other; HASL now looks forward to working towards common goals with our newly elected Green Councillors David Gibson and Dick Page and returning Labour Councillor Emma Daniel. Wednesdays – Adult Dance Fitness and Adult Tap.
For more information on these classes visit the HCA website: www.hanovercommunity.org.uk What’s This All About Then?
You may have noticed that the HCA is run by a group of voluntary trustees and wondered what that means...
Charity trustees are the people who serve on the governing body of a charity such as the HCA. Trustees come from all walks of life, and are united by their wish to create positive change in society. Most people are eligible to serve as trustees. In the case of HCA you must live or be employed in our geographical ‘area of benefit’. Trustee work should be rewarding and enjoyable, and an opportunity to serve the community while learning new skills. Trustees have and must accept ultimate responsibility for directing the affairs of a charity. Using their personal skills and experience as needed, they must ensure that the charity is solvent, well-run, efficient, and delivering the charitable outcomes for the benefit of the public for which it has been set up. All decisions by the trustees concerning a charity are taken by all the trustees, acting collectively and as a team. However, the decisions need not be unanimous; a majority decision is sufficient unless the charity’s governing document states otherwise.
July 23rd to August 28th
The HCA holds regular meetings for the trustees and observers to discuss the current issues relating to the HCA. Occasionally the trustees are required to meet or communicate over specific matters in addition to these meetings. Those with special roles such as Chair and Treasurer have other duties, such as planning the meetings or monitoring the finances, but do not have any extra powers or responsibilities. If you would like to consider becoming a trustee of the HCA please get in touch. We are happy to tell you more about what it involves and let you know when the next meeting is. You can also read about HCA on our website: http://hanovercommunity.org. uk/about If you want more general information on becoming a trustee, visit www.gov.uk and search for ‘the essential trustee what you need to know’. hanover The latest in the musings of Hanover Dad...
Hanover Dad... Weirdy Beardy I’m 41 now and have realised that I’m quite clearly in the throes of a full-on mid-life crisis. For starters I have started going to the gym. I’ve also got myself a new hairstyle and have bought myself some ‘young’ trainers. The other day I seriously spent a few hours contemplating giving up work, selling the house and living a simple life as a shepherd. “Where is my life going?” I pondered. “I don’t need the rat race and material things any more. I could move to a mountain and raise the children as goatherds,” I thought. “The wife could weave us clothes on a loom and we could live off the land.” I then pictured breaking this news to my lovely wife, and quickly embraced a bottle of my expensively imported lager and wallowed in first world luxury for a bit. My next step into crisis is that I have grown a beard. I thought to myself, “Lots of young guys have beards at the moment, they must be fashionable.” The fact that I’m roughly only 18 months behind this fashion is a source of some stylish pride for me actually! It didn’t really take that long to grow either. Once I’d answered

several questions about my personal hygiene and reassured people that I wasn’t actually having a nervous breakdown, all of a sudden it was there. Don’t get me wrong, it’s only your basic beard variety, with no requirement for equipment or man products to maintain, but if I’m honest, I’m quite surprised about the amount of attention my new beard has caused amongst my colleagues and peers. The feedback has been pretty positive so far as well. I’m not so sure about it though. I would like to think I now resemble a cool bearded man, like Jeremy Paxman or Russell Brand, but secretly I think I look a bit like the third member of the Bee Gees that nobody fancied and was always at the back of the pop videos. Still, on the plus side, my wife has told me that she really likes the beard, and loves my new ‘manly’ look. She has said to me, “Keep it, I think it makes you look really different,” but I think she likes it because she feels like she’s living with someone else, which is probably something she’s wanted to do for years!

hanover Hanover Person...
Gee Mantle of The Dover Castle So, you are the new person in charge of The Dover Castle…tell us your name a bit about yourself.
I am indeed. I am Gee. I have red hair, an orange dog, a supervisor called Buff-bag and a chef called Fluff, they are great, and some other lovely-named awesome staff. I have never had a pub before so we are somewhat winging it, but it is going very well and I have a great team of staff. Is this your first experience of living in Hanover? What do you think of the area?
Before taking on the Dover Castle I lived on Elm Grove for two years, so on the outskirts of Hanover, but I am still pretty new to the area. We have had some really great support from the people of Hanover, lots of people have had great things to say about how we have brought some life back into the pub. It’s a fantastic community to be a part of.
Tell us about the changes you are making to the pub and also your plans for the future. So far we have made the inside a cosier place to hang out and freshened up the outside. Everything has had a lick of paint and a bit of character added. We have DJs and bands on at the weekends which have been very popular. Recently there was an article in the Argus about the Dover Castle titled “A Noise Compliment”, saying how great it was to wander down the street and hear bands playing in the pub. We now have student deals, happy hour deals, pub quizzes, open mics, breakfast club from 9:30 on a Thursday and more to come! Will you still be offering food at the pub? If so, what’s on offer?
We have a new kitchen, “Juicy Spoon”. Mike the chef is South African and so there is a South African twist to our food. There will be guest appearance popup kitchens (this month we have vegan pop-up “All Good Things”). Royalty stamp cards mean if you buy six meals you get the seventh free, food offers on Wednesdays as well as burger and a pint for a tenner on Fridays. Tell us why you think The Dover Castle is a great pub to visit…
It has amazing staff, a new South African twist on the food which is damn tasty, excellent live bands and great DJs, a perfect location with a bus stop outside, a lovely cosy garden and lots of new things happening. Our ethos is to provide everyone with the perfect environment to relax and have a good time.

Read Jen’s account of the many positive effects that holding a street party can have...
Windmill and Stanley Street Party
We are having our fourth Windmill and Stanley Street Party on 18th July and I’m really struck by what an effect they’ve had since the first one in 2011. Good friendships have been made during party planning and preparation and we’re a friendly little community up here at the top of the Hanover Mountain. If you have ever thought of holding a do on your road, I’d say ‘go for it!’ Here are some tips, for what they’re worth, from someone who’s now got a good few street parties under her belt: ·
· ·
·
· · ·
Get the official bit over early to get approval to close your road. Download the form from the council’s website and conduct your street “poll” – you need signatures of at least two thirds of residents in favour of the party. Decide how you’ll fund the party - have collection boxes circulating on the day, or take a collection beforehand from the street. Set up a Facebook group for your street to keep everyone up-to-date on plans. Once you’ve got this running it becomes much easier to organise other get-togethers. Bunting looks great, strung across the street. Get everyone to donate some scraps of material and hold a bunting-making evening. Once it’s up, the kids love spotting bits of their old clothes, curtains, or duvet covers adorning the street. Hire a bouncy castle - a small charge per bouncing session means that this pays for itself, and often makes a small profit to put towards your costs. The Tarner Resource Centre on Tilbury Place is fantastic for equipment for your party and for photocopying street party newsletters and posters. Check out the Streets Alive website for advice, and for their great “road closed” sign kit - you have to display these and they are expensive to hire, so it’s worth making your own.
deadline for adverts and articles for the August edition is 15th JULY
Stick up posters along the road encouraging people to park elsewhere on the day of your party. Almost the best thing about our parties has been seeing the road empty of cars. You are very welcome to come to the Windmill and Stanley Street Party on Saturday 18th July, from midday to 6.30pm. We have Barulho Samba and other fantastic live bands playing for us. Our theme is SUPERHEROES - there’ll be mask making, face painting, a puppet making workshop from 2-3pm, and races. Wearing your pants outside your trousers is, of course, mandatory. ·

Here is news of a local activity in Hanover for children...
Musical Bumps at The Hanover Centre Hello, I’m Belinda and I teach Musical Bumps classes in Brighton and Hove. We offer top quality, friendly music classes to share with babies, toddlers and pre-school children. We use traditional songs and rhymes, musical games and percussion from around the world. Our repertoire is chosen to enable children to learn. The songs and games we use all have a purpose. We like to keep up to date - thus ensuring that Musical Bumps fully supports the EYFS curriculum. We know that children learn best through play - our classes are playful and engaging. We have enough percussion and puppets for everyone to use, as well as colourful resources. We believe that music education for the very young is so important to a child’s wellbeing and development. Music benefits all areas of learning. For example it can support speech and language, social skills, fine and gross motor development, increased confidence, musical skills and much more, all of which is pivotal to a child’s happiness, growth and learning. Our classes provide the perfect opportunity for you and your child to share an hour of music making and
singing whilst having fun. There’s time for refreshments too, giving us all a chance to get to know each other. Come along and see for yourself, book a free taster session and join the class in action. For babies (from newborn), 1 – 2 years, 2 – 3 years and mixed age class.
