Welcome to the June Edition of the Hanover Directory

Another four years passes and once more the World Cup is here. For once the expectation levels amongst the majority could be termed as ‘realistic’ with the gradual realization since the last World Cup that we are no longer a major force in world football. That said, however, and what keeps us all gripped and fascinated with sport is that it can throw up amazing stories and unexpected heroes. Fingers crossed!! We have the usual mix of local items for you this month. Maybe the pick of the bunch is the article detailing the 150th anniversary of the Church of the Annunciation in Washington Street and the up and coming schedule of events to celebrate it. See page 9. Also, although not strictly Hanover, this month it is the annual Shakespeare in Queen’s Park. It is a great event and you can read about it on page 21. Have a great June! hanover Hanover Women exhibit at the Jubilee Library

A group of 16 Hanover-based women, calling themselves The Accidental Artists, will be staging an exhibition of two large pieces of group work, for two weeks in June.

Coming from diverse backgrounds, members of the group have a variety of day jobs and yet manage to get together regularly to produce some stunning art. In the foyer is “The First Supper”, an 8ft x 3ft patchwork painting of 12 women and a birthday girl, which borrows ingeniously the composition

of Leonardo’s Last Supper. But these are 21st century Brighton women, at a tea party. In the windows overlooking Jubilee Square, there will be suspended 16 beautiful stained glass effect panels, each celebrating the life of a significant woman through the ages, chosen by the individual artists, ranging from Nefertiti, through Aung San Suu Kyi, to Jenny Jones the bronzewinning snowboarder. These windows-withinwindows will evoke a medieval atmosphere in the context of a modern urban library. Free, disabled access, boasting a café and comfortable chairs, the exhibition will be open from June 16th - 28th, during normal library opening hours.

ReDec in the Upper Deck If you remember, we raised the money to put an insulated ceiling into the upper hall in partnership with Hanover 10:10. The hall already needed redecoration, and the building work involved moving the end walls and re-plastering, so the room wasn’t looking too good at all. After a large lick of paint it’s looking really smart at last. Robert White of ReDec did the work, fitting in around our busy timetable so that no classes or groups had to be cancelled. While we were about it, we decided to redecorate the balcony area too. Charity Take-Away Inspired by this ‘freshen up’ for spring, we have also had a good rummage in the cupboards to clear out any unused and unwanted items. We will be holding a Charity Take-Away event on Saturday 14 June, 11am – 3pm. Come and see if there’s something you can use, take it away and leave a donation if you can. hanover Woof! Calling all canines. Mid-June means one thing for our furry, four-legged friends of Queen’s Park: it’s show time!

Bark in the Park

The slightly less hairy Friends of Queen’s Park and our co-sponsors, Coastway Veterinary Group, invite you and yours to Bark in the Park 2014 on Sunday June 15th. For the second year there will be two show rings - the fun ring and the pedigree ring. Entry is £1 per class. The fun ring will be hosted by celebrity jungle survivor Annabel Giles, and vet nurses Heather Ryan and Hannah Pook will be judging. Registration starts at 11am (show starts at noon) and there are ten classes to choose from, each sponsored by a wonderful local business. Prizes and rosettes will be won in: Best Rescue, Handsomest Dog, Prettiest Bitch, Best Puppy, Best Fancy Dress, Best Child’s Toy Dog, Best Trick, Best Veteran, and not forgetting crowd favourites Dog Most Like Its Owner and the hotly contested Best Sausage Catcher.

The pedigree ring will be judged by Andreas Schemel.

Highly respected and well known on the circuit, Andreas is also Head Vet at Crufts.

If your best friend has the bloodlines, try your luck in classes: AV Puppy, AV Toy Dogs, AV Gundogs, AV Terriers, AV Working Dogs/AV Pastoral, AV Hounds, AV Veteran as well as an Open Class.

The chaps from the Camelford Arms will be serving Pimm’s and beer for your refreshment, and The Real Bratwurst Company will be back with their open grill, serving genuine German sausages. Also on offer are delicious cakes, sweets and savouries from park neighbour Wooden Belly. Real coffee comes ground, steamed and frothed from Margaritta and Cafetissimo who are usually found in Brighton station. All manner of fabulous, doggythemed stalls will also be in attendance. Also, this year, ahead of new rules that will make it compulsory, the Dogs Trust will be at Bark in the Park offering FREE microchipping for your dog.

They say every dog has its day, so come on down and put your best paw forward. It’s barking good fun. Guy Smyth

Protesters Against Fracking Acquitted by Courts

People of Sussex stood up against shale gas being fracked in the local countryside.

The extraction of shale gas goes completely against the climate change imperative to leave two-thirds of carbon underneath the ground in order to reduce our emissions and mitigate climate change. It would also lead to industrialisation of the countryside and over-use and possible contamination of our local water supplies. In what has been described as the ‘criminalisation of peaceful protest’, Sussex police spent £4 million in the operation and are accused of mass arrests, draconian bail conditions and section 14 notices under the Public Order Act to protect the actions of energy firm Cuadrilla to pursue exploratory drilling. 75% of those arrested, including Green MP Caroline Lucas, have been acquitted in a move that vindicates

19 the right to peaceful protest and questions the use of this amount of tax payers’ money to protect the energy companies.

‘Shakespeare In The Park’ will be back in Queen’s Park this summer with Macbeth, a ‘blood-soaked tragedy of vaulting ambition’.

Shakespeare in the Park...Macbeth

Shakespeare In The Park faced an uncertain future when, after five seasons of unstinting service, local actors Owen Aaronovitch and Fiona Bruce decided to stand down as event organisers. They’ve called it a day due to their own acting commitments - Fiona has a major part in the West End hit musical ‘Once’ - but The Friends Of Queen’s Park agreed to retain the event, with Conrad Brunner from the committee taking on the organisation. “Owen and Fiona have done a brilliant job, and last summer saw a large audience turning out for ‘As You Like It’. It was a beautiful evening, the production was excellent and we want Shakespeare In The Park to continue forever,” says Conrad.

“We’re delighted to be working again with Illyria, who really understand outdoor Shakespeare, having been performing nationwide for over a decade. The quality of the acting and direction for ‘As You Like It’ was, I think, remarkably good.”

“My aim will be to try and continue the good work of Owen and Fiona. Fortunately, Macbeth is the nearest thing to a guaranteed crowd pleaser. It revels in the dark side of human nature - there are some decent characters, but they mostly get killed off - pre-dating our modern infatuation with psychotic drama. Macbeth has a lot in common with TV shows like Game Of Thrones, only Shakespeare’s script - written around 400 years ago - is so much better, don’t you think? “

cited and proud of him,” says Lesley Jeavons.

You can buy Macbeth tickets direct at Picnic In The Park, on Sunday 29 June, or via the Dome Box Office. All details are on the Friends Of Queen’s Park website. Please note that, while this performance takes place during Brazil 2014, there are no games scheduled for Sunday 6 July.

I can’t think of anything I’d rather watch on a warm summer’s evening, perhaps with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.”

EVENT INFORMATION: Sunday 6 July, 2014. Royal Spa, Queen’s Park, BN2 0BT

Death, treachery, blood and murder are not everyone’s idea of family entertainment, but the Jeavons family of Queen’s Park Road will be out in significant numbers for Macbeth. They will be there to support aspiring young actor Beau Jeavons-White, 23, who will be performing with Illyria in the part of Macduff. Beau is a graduate of the E15 Acting School, and he specialises in sword play - an ideal qualification for Macbeth.

Doors open 6.30pm, Performance 7.30pm . £12.50, £6.50 children (under 16)

Outdoor performance. Please bring your own seating/ rug, warm clothes and picnic. Cancellation in the event of hurricane only, when performance will be rescheduled. Tickets are non-refundable. Tickets available via the Brighton Dome Ticket Office: 01273 709 709, or via www.brightonticketshop.com

Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team

Neighbourhood Survey

Transport, Streets and Parking

Thanks to everyone in the sample roads who has completed this survey. We have chosen different roads to get a spread around the Hanover and Elm Grove area. The roads covered are Lincoln Street, Toronto Terrace, Franklin Street, Bonchurch Road, Hallett Road and Belgrave Street. We shall have some early results to discuss at the HEGLAT meeting on 2nd June. Then the working group will look at the results in more depth and see if it is possible to come up with community proposals to improve our streets. Any ideas or proposals will then be put back to the community to check out support. If you are interested in looking at any community proposals, contact David Gibson at davidsg@ntlworld.com or Chris Taylor at greysland@sky.com

results from the parking/transport survey and also at the recent Housing Report which contains figures and maps revealing how many HMOs are in our areas. We have got Mike Moon from Cityclean to answer points about the refuse and recycling service and we were also hoping to get Councillor Pete West to come to the meeting in his position as Chair of the Environment and Transport Committee, but he is unable to attend.

Next HEGLAT meeting is at 7pm on June 2nd at The Hanover pub, Queen’s Park Road This month’s LAT will be looking at any early initial

hanover Please help us with our cover photography….

Any David Baileys Out There?

We don’t claim to be photographers and we hold our hands up and admit that apart from the great artwork that we have featured on recent covers (this months included) we do tend to struggle a bit with our front cover photographs. Giving this a bit of thought, we have decided to give the problem to the talented and creative people of Hanover.

So here is the deal: each month we will use the best and most appropriate photo that we receive as a front cover for the following month’s edition of The Hanover Directory. There are certain criteria to bear in mind regarding the photo. The photo has to be recognizable as Hanover. The photo has to be seasonal and fit the month of the publication. However, feel free to submit photos that are from other parts of the year and we can keep them on file for consideration when the appropriate month comes around. Bear in mind the proportions of the space used on the cover for the picture. We may need to crop your photo to fit the space and this might lose part of the main subject of the photo and render it unusable. The winning photo will appear on the cover of the

next edition of The Hanover Directory and the magazine will also carry a credit to the winning photographer on page 3. Also, as a thank you for taking the effort of providing us with a great cover photo, we will reproduce the cover for you onto a canvas that you can proudly hang on your wall and forever more bask in your own success! Photos need to be of a high enough resolution to be printed. The minimum resolution for printing is 300dpi. Photos can be either PDFs or J-Pegs. If you have any questions regarding any technical aspects of that request, please feel free to ask. The deadline to get photos to us to be considered for yet? a particular edition is the 15th of the previous month, eg 15th March to be considered for the April edition.
