The latest article from Hanover Action, formerly known as HASL...

Land Use and Wildlife One Planet Living in Hanover & Elm Grove This month for Hanover Action: Towards a Sustainable Community’s principles of One Planet Living, we focus on land use and wildlife. On 22nd May it is International Day for Biological Diversity, and this year they focus on “Mainstreaming Biodiversity; Sustaining People and their Livelihoods”. Biodiversity is helping to change the way that people do things all over the world. People are becoming more aware of their surroundings, what they can do with them and how they preserve them. Some of you may have seen programmes such as ‘Grand Designs’ and George Clarke’s ‘Amazing Spaces’, where people have built their own homes and adapted the way they live, to be able to live in a more sustainable home, and some people have added green roofs. Green roofs are roofs that are covered in vegetation and a growing medium. Because plants can help to moderate the urban summer temperature and improve air quality by mitigating air pollution and greenhouse gases, they also help promote biodiversity and help to shelter wildlife and insects. In a city like Brighton, in some places there isn’t much greenery, but by adding a green roof to your house you are adding something aesthetically pleasing and will help to cut the air pollution from all of the vehicles. For more information on biodiversity please visit Convention on Biological Diversity at www.cbd.int/idb/

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Sue Nunn, after a brief illness. Sue was a local resident, mother, dog owner, erstwhile trustee of the HCA, artist and sculptor. She had a lifelong career as a social worker but her passion for art led her to start a women’s collective in 1986, in which she got together with other artists in Brighton to help facilitate the exhibition of their work. This seemed so productive that she launched the Women in Art group, initially at the Unemployment Centre, then at the Hanover Centre for many years. After retiring Sue briefly became a trustee of the HCA and was a valued member. But she was

The charity is run by a committee of voluntary trustees who live tions, so please get in touch if you’ve attended an event or activity at the centre and have creative ways to express themselves; they all mentioned how extraordinary her imagination was. Each term had an exciting new theme, she played with mindfulness philosophy, poetry and other ways to bring out creativity. The group would often go to the beach or connect with the natural world to create art, and she taught them how to observe what they saw around them, from the light that fell on objects to the detail in a scene. Her gifts to the group were many. Her passion for art led her to take them to exhibitions in London and always to inspire them to develop their own creative potential. As Gaia’s Girls they exhibited during the Art Trail for ten years and in 2014 at Jubilee Library with the exhibition ‘Inspirational Women’. Sue was herself inspirational, as a mother to Alfie and Charlie and Rothko, her beloved dog. Above all, to the Women in Art group, she was a star.

delighted to be able to devote time to her own practice as a sculptor, and carving became essential to her life. She took part in many exhibitions and some of us are fortunate to have pieces from her huge body of work. The Women in Art group would have celebrated its 30th birthday this year, and when they learned of Sue’s illness they decided to continue meeting and creating art together. This was something that she was deeply touched by; the fact that they are now meeting again in the Unemployment Centre brings the group full circle. Sue took the women through so many different

hanover St Luke’s May concert and local event...

Here is a good one to get involved with...

Music and Wine at St Luke’s Know my Neighbour Week 21st-27th May 2016 Rachel Fryer is the founder and musical director of Music & Wine at St Luke’s. She is also a talented concert pianist who has performed at leading venues throughout Europe and performed Bach’s Goldberg Variations at last year’s Brighton Fringe.

On May 13th Rachel will be performing with local violinist Andrew Roberts, a member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. The programme will include pieces by 20th century composers Josef Suk, Einojuhani Rautavaara and Rebecca Clarke, as well as favourites by Debussy and Prokofiev. Andrew says: “It is rare to find such an intuitive and inspiring musical partner as Rachel and I am really excited to be performing with her at St Luke’s.” The concert takes place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, at 7.30pm. Disabled access. Wine and refreshments served. Tickets available on the door. Website: stlukesconcerts.webeden.co.uk/

Our lives are often so busy many of us don’t know the people living closest to us.

Know My Neighbour Week is being launched across the city because getting to know our neighbours is a highly effective way of tackling social isolation. This May, a week of initiatives and activities will help you get to know your neighbours. For seven days between 21 and 27 May (11am7pm), a pop-up café at One Church in Gloucester Place will become a hub of neighbourliness, with music, entertainment, information and support. Come along to find out how to get involved. Just a few reasons to take time out to know your neighbours… • Fewer than a quarter of people in the UK feel a sense of belonging in the community. • One in 10 has no interaction with neighbours. • BBC Sussex recently did a survey of 400 local people. 70% had experienced loneliness in the last 12 months. • Good neighbours can play a vital role in emotional security. A move to a new area or housing situation means many do not know their neighbours. • The effect of loneliness on mortality exceeds the impact of risk factors such as obesity, and has a similar influence to cigarette smoking. To find out more, go to knowmyneighbour.org or check out our Facebook (Know My Neighbour) or Twitter (@knowmyneighbour ) pages. Alternatively, you can email Kate at hello@knowmyneighbour.org or call 01273 694746.

Just down the hill from Hanover...

The Warren Returns for Brighton Fringe

As festival time is fast approaching you will have noticed a number of pop-up sites springing up all over the city. Festival favourite The Warren is returning to St Peter’s Church North, with four theatres, a rooftop bar, a children’s area and stalls by local traders, and will be the setting for more than 160 shows.

This is Brighton-based production company Otherplace’s eleventh year on the Brighton Fringe. In addition to the Theatre Box, there is now a 250seat, bowler-hat shaped Main House, and two studio venues. The four venues will host a programme that spans theatre, comedy, cabaret, dance, opera, spoken word, music and film. New for 2016 is dedicated family area The Den, with free arts and crafts workshops as well as Woodland Tribe’s Build Your Own Adventure Playground activity. Highlights include The Biggest Marionette Circus in the World; the multi-award-winning Bane series; Pirates of Penzance and The Merchant of Venice from the riotous team behind sell-out Sh*t-faced Shakespeare; Knightmare Live – a theatrical take on the cult ‘80s kids’ TV programme, and a preview by cabaret superstar Le Gateau Chocolat.

Captain Morgan and the Sands of Time

Another show to look out for is Edinburgh hit show Captain Morgan and the Sands of Time, boasting all the monsters, sword fights and shivered timbers you’d expect from a Hollywood blockbuster, delivered by two actors and one musician. Using nothing but their bodies to conjure objects and set, Morgan and Hammond must slay monsters, battle sea gods and outwit the dastardly privateer Renshaw and maniacal Father Time. Described as “Horrible Histories meets Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, with a touch of the Mighty Boosh” (Edinburgh Fringe Review), the Captain Morgan series draws inspiration from shows like The 39 Steps and The Reduced Shakespeare Company. Captain Morgan and the Sands of Time scooped up a load of awards in Edinburgh. Pop along to the Warren on 11 and 12 May to find out why. Join us on our rooftop bar, where revellers can enjoy craft beers from a bird’s eye perch overlooking the entire site. Open until 12am weekdays and 2am at weekends it joins the festival bar, a coffee shop open from 8am daily, and a selection of stalls selling fresh, tasty festival food from all over the world. Open to everyone – whether seeing a show or not The Warren promises a one-stop shop for Fringe fun. Listings information The Warren is open from Thursday 5 May – Sunday 5 June. The box office is already open on site. Book tickets online at: www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk or call 01273 987516.

This poem was sent in to us by local resident and budding poet, Eve King. Eve is in her nineties...

Days Gone By... I came to Southover Street at the age of six! And lived opposite a pub called “The Bricks” What shops we had in days gone by Would you like to know? I’ll give it a try! Bakers, butchers and the GPO The chemist, the laundry, all on the go! Barbers, electrics and grocers too And dear “Mr Woods” who could “make” you a shoe! The jewellers, the toy shop, I could name more! But maybe I’m just becoming a bore So goodbye shops that I once knew I’ll just sit down and make a “brew”.

Another local event taking place in May...

The Cats are Back!

Cat fans in Brighton don’t have long to wait until the second annual Hanover Portrait & Cat Craft Exhibition. The event, which runs throughout May, will once again be held at The Dover Castle pub.

This event was dreamed up by local artist Eva Hellqvist, from the OhSoSwedish studio on Brighton seafront, as a way of raising funds for Lost Cats Brighton. Eva and fellow organiser Hannah Osmond, a volunteer from the cat shelter, have high hopes to beat the £480 raised from sales of the artwork during last year’s exhibition. The idea is for local people to create a portrait of their cat. Open to artists of any age and ability, the gallery will be an interesting insight into Hanover’s community of cats. This year submissions are also invited from craft-makers. Think knitted cats, pottery cats, embroidered cats…you get the picture! For more information please contact: eva@ohsoswedish.com The exhibition will be showing throughout May at The Dover Castle, 43 Southover Street.
