2 Have you had your ‘flu’ jab for this winter? Influenza, or ‘flu’, is a common, highly infectious viral illness that is spread by coughs and sneezes, and is especially widespread in the winter months. It can leave you feeling extremely tired and achy, with symptoms of a high temperature, headache, sore throat, and often nausea and a cough. The symptoms last around a week on average, and are more severe and longer-lasting than those caused by the common cold. You can also infect other people during the first 5-6 days. In the UK, around 600 people a year die from a complication of seasonal ‘flu, and this can rise to 13,000 during an epidemic. So have the ‘flu’ jab for‘flu’-free winter!

There are always interesting things going on in Hanover whether it’s the BBC filming cats in the area or the opportunity to try your hand at fencing...
The Cats of Hanover
At the beginning of October, the BBC screened a series of documentaries entitled “Cat Watch 2014” about cats: how they see, talk, experience the world around them and how they are evolving from solitary predator to pampered pet.
Sussex Fencing School
The sound of clashing steel is now emanating from Hanover Community Centre on Southover Street on a Wednesday afternoon! Sussex Fencing School has begun classes for kids and youth, aiming to widen the appeal of this Olympic sport.
‘There’s the idea that fencing is very expensive to get into,’ says coach Mark Barrowcliffe. ‘That’s not true. Here it’s £5 a lesson, all equipment provided.’
Lessons run from 3.30-4.30 at the moment, though they tend to run over for people who can’t make it on time. ‘We’re flexible,’ says Mark, ‘we have kids from 6 to 14 at the moment – though obviously the older ones don’t fight the younger ones!’ Using GPS trackers and cat cameras, the documentaries showed what cats get up to as soon as they leave the cat flap. One location used for the experiment was Hanover (Hanover Street to be precise), an ideal location given how many cats reside in the neighbourhood! I understand at the very least that Bertie, and maybe Biggles as well (local cats), were to feature. We were curious as to what our cat, Rosie, gets up to when she goes out of the house and put her name forward to the BBC when they did a casting call some months ago. However, she was not chosen! Notwithstanding Rosie’s disappointment, the fact that we love cats and that Rosie receives many cats visitors both in the garden and in our home (coupled with the screening of the documentaries) prompted me at the beginning of October to set up a Facebook group “The Cats of Hanover”: a group dedicated to the cats of Hanover, their personalities and their activities/antics. On the group’s pages residents and cat lovers of Hanover can post pictures and stories about their, and the neighbourhood, cats and the antics that they get up to. The group is also being used to post details of missing cats, cat related events (eg the BBC documentaries), cat trivia and to ask/answer cat related questions.
Olympic fencing uses three weapons – the foil, derived from the training weapons of the 16th and 17th centuries, the épée – which comes from the duelling swords of the Musketeers – and the sabre, a cutting weapon. Sussex Fencing School teaches épée, where the whole body is a valid target. ‘We train to aim at the hand or the foot,’ says Mark, ‘because they’re the nearest targets to you.’
Fencing requires speed, cunning and skill to score points against your opponent using a real – though very safe – sword. Top fencers are among the fittest athletes on the planet and accelerate at speeds comparable to Olympic sprinters! However, it’s not all speed and strength. Guile and finesse play an enormous part in the sport and it’s very possible for smaller, weaker fencers to defeat the big and the strong. Girls and boys can compete equally! The sport also has a strong code of sporting behaviour and respect for the opponent. Mark can be contacted on 07980 723444 or admin@fencingschool.co.uk
All cat lovers and residents of Hanover are welcome to join and share their stories about the cats of Hanover! Ken Frost https://www.facebook.com/ groups/356190734542473/

Here we feature a local artist and Hanover resident offering Mosaic classes...
Lunamoon Mosaic by Caroline Budden
I am an artist and teacher living in the Elm Grove/Hanover area. I have started a little business called Lunamoon Mosaic: making and selling mosaics, and teaching mosaic classes from my kitchen table. I fell in love with the art of mosaics when I went to Gaudi’s Park Güell in Barcelona as a girl. Originally from Berkshire, I studied Fine Art at degree level and went on to be an art teacher. I started making my own

mosaics four years ago. Once I had filled each room of my house with mosaics, I started making them to sell. I incorporate broken and rescued objects into my work, especially crockery: a method known as Pique Assiette. I also like to use buttons, beads and other colourful, shiny ‘treasures’. I am a bit of a magpie and I hate to throw things away. Mosaic-making incorporates recycling to produce a hard-wearing beauty. I have marvelled at examples in Pompeii that are over 2,000 years old! People know I make mosaics and I often come home to find a broken cup or saucer on my doorstep. I am always hunting round charity shops and car boot sales for useful bits and pieces. In Hanover there is a culture of putting unwanted objects on the street. I have discovered mirrors and furniture crying out to be up-cycled. I held an Open House Exhibition earlier this year and it was a great success. I subsequently created my website www.carolinebudden.co.uk, a Facebook page and an online shop on www.etsy. com/uk/shop/LunamoonMosaic.
I teach mosaic courses from home. My classes are small, friendly and fun. I run three two-hour sessions for £50.00, including all materials, tea and cake (gift vouchers are available). At present my classes are on Wednesday and Friday mornings and Thursday afternoons.
You can contact me for more information on: carolinebuddenmosaic@gmail.com or ‘like’ my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/Lunamoonshop to find out more.

The service I received from James, Jim and Jose at Q has been nothing short of phenomenal. They work tirelessly and professionally at all times and their level of knowledge is outstanding. They truly are ‘modern day’ estate agents who provide the best customer service possible. All three of them are an absolute pleasure to deal with; I would definitely sell through them again in the future and would highly recommend them to anyone. Mr & Mrs K, Brighton

Here we feature a book written by Hanover’s very own David Bramwell...
The No. 9 Bus to Utopia
A little while ago, I took a year off. It was the classic mid-life crisis. I’d gone through a relationship break-up and been replaced by someone my ex described as ‘younger but more mature’. She complained that I’d been too selfish and ‘forever wrapped up in stupid projects’. And she was right, I needed to change. But, as a man with a taste for the exotic, this was never going to happen through an eightweek course in Mindfulness. Instead, I set myself another project, a global adventure: to learn how to live with others.
For 12 months I journeyed across Europe and America, visiting an anarchist commune in the heart of Denmark, a futuristic city in the Arizona Desert, free love communities, co-housing groups and spiritual retreats. Most fantastical of all was Damanhur in the Italian Alps, with an underground temple the size of St Paul’s Cathedral, singing plants and a ‘fully functioning time machine’. I spent a month in each, sampling their delights and facing challenges that ranged from performing an improvised dance to fighting off the amorous advances of a randy emu. But what really shaped my year were the experiences and conversations I shared with strangers. After a year, I returned home. I had really missed Brighton but, after my adventures, aspects of city life seemed to reflect the selfish behaviour I had sought to change in myself. Few of us talk to our neighbours, we litter our beach and we hate the idea of sharing a seat with a stranger on public transport. Pondering on what I could do to bring a greater sense of sharing in my neighbourhood of Hanover, I discovered that someone had beaten me to it. An American, David Burke, had created
a neighbour day, Zocalo. On a given day, residents were asked to put a chair outside and sit on it as a way of saying, ‘I’m a friendly neighbour, come and have a chat.’ It was a great success. Hundreds took to the streets, shared food, dragged out sofas and fairy lights and hung out until nightfall. As a new, improved and more caring man, I joined forces with David and this year we ran our fifth Zocalo in early September (and with the help of the Hanover Directory). The problems in our cities won’t all be resolved by just listening and talking to our neighbours but it feels like a step in the right direction. And for those of us without a family or partner, learning to be more sharing and less self-centred might even make us that little bit more of a catch.
The No9 Bus to Utopia is an entertaining and thought-provoking new book based on David’s global adventures and musings on how we live in the 21st century. Signed copies are available from his website: http://www.drbramwell.com/books/no9-bus-to-utopia City Books and Waterstones. ‘Packed with gags, wisdom and pathos.’ Tom Hodgkinson (author of How to be Idle) .

hanover Hanover‘s Gourmet Girls Pub Review...
The Walmer Castle
The monthly meeting of the Gourmet Girls took place in the Walmer Castle, a well established local boozer near Queen’s Park, on the corner of Queen’s Park Road and Albion Hill. Once homely (and a bit worn out?), it had clearly been upgraded since our student days, without losing the local pub feel. Today’s Walmer has muted tones, but is not bland. Friendly staff responded to our option for wine with an excellent Rioja for £15 a bottle and an equally tasty Pinot Grigio. The pub was cosily busy but not crowded, and we were delighted to be seated at the big, round table by the bay window, easily accommodating all five of us. With impeccable timing we had chosen Wednesday, the night for the amazing 2 for 1 offer on all main courses (cheapest free). The menu offers a range of substantial pub food. Meat eaters are well catered for – ribs, steak, chicken and burgers. However there was only a limited choice for veggies and an absence of lighter meals such as fresh salads, my craving that night. Temptation to have the creamy fish pie changed as our girly group went for the increasingly popular option of sharing plates. We had two generous plates of ribs, chicken wings, onion rings, chunky chips and coleslaw, as well as two plates of nachos loaded with beautiful guacamole, sour cream, chilli and gooey melted cheese.
Overall gourmet girls ratings: FOOD = 4 ATMOSPHERE = 5 SERVICE = 4 VALUE FOR MONEY = 5 Brought to you by Hanover’s Gourmet Girls - a group of local ladies who meet regularly in a restaurant or pub in the area and let you know their findings...
Timing was fine, relaxed not rushed, and the portions were more than enough to feed all five. At £5 a head with the Wednesday deal, this was fantastic value for money.

hanover Hanover Action for Sustainable Living...
Award for Healthy School Dinners Won by City Council
School meals served in Brighton & Hove’s schools have been awarded Silver Status under the Soil Association’s Food for Life scheme, at no extra cost to the council. The award follows the council’s setting of new healthy and ethical standards, which require caterers to provide more local, seasonal and organic ingredients. The majority of meals are now freshly prepared, meat is from farms which satisfy UK welfare standards and all eggs are from cage-free hens.
Research shows that healthy school meals are vital to help kids study at school. It also creates good habits for life. By improving standards, it has also supported local farmers and ethical producers. Anyone want to run a street party?
The recent Washington Street party went down a storm. Over 100 adults and children attended. Neighbours had fun, got to know each other better and for the future:-
17 households want to be part of a “greening the street outside their houses with plants and planters” project.
11 households want to form an informal residents’ group seeking positive, sustainable solutions to street issues like parking, rubbish and recycling, as well as organising community activity like street play, zocalo and street parties. HASL are keen to support more similar events so, if you would like to arrange something for your street, please contact David Gibson: davidsg@ntlworld.com.

HASL AGM and film The Economics of Happiness Friday 14th November at 7.30pm at the Hanover Community Centre
The Economics of Happiness describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, an unholy alliance of governments and big business continues to promote globalisation and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, people all over the world are resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of trade and finance — and, far from the old institutions of power, they’re starting to forge a very different future. Communities are coming together to re-build more human-scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm – an economics of localisation. Followed by a chance to hear about HASL’s activities last year at the AGM and social.

The 27th Annual Hanover Beer Festival took place on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th October 2014. Once again, it lived up to its reputation as the best party in Hanover. The final tally was 54 beers, 10 ciders and perries, 4 wines, and a range of hot food from the Humble Pie. As usual, there was massive demand for tickets, and the 350 for each night sold out weeks before the event. Later both evenings we were able to let a small number of people in after others had left, but we have to maintain strict control of numbers to keep the event safe and enjoyable, so many people were disappointed. Some of you called in for a take-away on Sunday morning too.
Huge thanks go to all our sponsors, volunteers and customers for helping to make it such a great event. To see our gallery of photos, go to http://hanovercommunity.org.uk/hanover-beer-festival

How to Find the Right Builder A Quick Guide from 360 Home Hanover’s beautiful streets and characterful houses need an intelligent, resourceful approach to maximising their space sensitively.
Once your plans have been drawn up and approved and the finances have been cleared, you need to find the right builder. This can often be the trickiest part of the process. There are many places you could try: Checkatrade, friends’ recommendations, local adverts. But what makes a ‘good builder’? And how can you be sure that the relationship you form at the beginning of the project is as smooth at the end? When we started 360 Home, we drew up a list of qualities we considered paramount. We instil them into every member of our team and hope they will help guide your decision-making at this crucial stage. • Professional skills supported by an intelligent approach to building.
• Friendly, polite, genuinely helpful craftspeople. • Skilled workmanship with fine attention to detail. • Innate knowledge of different period styles and a feel for what will work in each space. • Clear, open communication and pricing structures. • Reliable and responsive client care. We don’t pretend to be the cheapest builders in
Sussex but we do aim to offer extremely good value for your money. We encourage all our new clients to talk to our previous clients – after all, they’ve been through the process of finding the right builder and they’re best placed to give an honest appraisal.
A good builder is a busy one. It’s always worth waiting for the right builder. We schedule our projects carefully so we can be as attentive during the final stages of your build as we are at the beginning.
We have many years’ experience designing, renovating and extending houses in the Hanover area and have created some clever solutions that add extra living space whilst keeping the flow of the house intact, maximising the light and designing bespoke storage. Our craftspeople are highly skilled and everyone takes personal pride in achieving an excellent finish. If you are a Hanover resident and would like to feature in the Directory drop us a line...
Hanover Person - Sue Nunn What is your name and where in Hanover do you live? I am Sue Nunn and I live in Howard Road, Hanover.
How long have you lived in the area? We moved here in 1989.
What do you most like about living in Hanover?
Living in Hanover feels like living in a tightly-packed village. I am always walking the streets with my white dog, people are smiley and it’s impossible to get to the park without stopping for several chats. The many corner shops are friendly and well stocked. The long views of the little, brightly coloured houses, with the hills far away, give me great pleasure. Returning from the town centre, once I turn into Hanover I really relax. What would you most like to see improved in the area?
It would be so good to have more trees planted, especially in the many streets with no front gardens. We notice you are a wood carver...tell us more?
Always a sculptor, I struggled to finance my work, dragging materials out of skips etc until the great hurricane of 1987 threw lots of free wood onto the streets. My father was a carpenter and in 1987 I still had two of his old chisels. I thought I would give carving a try. 27 years later I continue to work with storm-felled wood or reclaimed timber. Sometimes I have to accost passing strangers to get help lifting large trunks of timber onto and off the workbench. Be warned if you are wandering along Howard Road! Recently I have been aiming to incorporate an early medieval style of carving with contemporary urban themes. I feel that art should be current, but not obscure, and I hope that people can relate to my work. I would rather be an artist of the people than an artist of the art world. I exhibit throughout the south and sell well.
The Wine Woman
Following last month’s plea for sherry, it’s back to basics – how to taste wine. Spitting optional!
In short you are assessing appearance, smell, taste and finish. How does the wine look? Pale or deep? – clues to light or fuller bodied wines. Tilting your glass, are there tears (legs) indicating higher alcohol? Is the wine a youthful single colour or tinged? Red wines fade with age, whites the reverse. Take a good sniff – is the smell fruit, floral,
In addition to my sculpture, I have been leading the Women and Art course, currently based at the Hanover Centre, for 29 years. This talented group has held many successful exhibitions, and produced unusual time-based outdoor art for the people of Brighton to puzzle over. What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
In carving, it is good to feel part of a tradition that spans the centuries and cultures. I love watching the grain move as I carve, like waves on the sea. It can be hypnotic. When I am carving in my studio, with views of open skies and Hanover gardens, I have no wish to be anywhere else. How could someone get to find out more about what you do and see your work?
From 24th November to 7th December my work will be on exhibition in the foyer of the Jubilee Library, Brighton city centre, open daily, 10am-5pm. Called “City Icons”, these gilded oak relief carvings use the traditional format of an icon, while reflecting moments of contemporary city life. Made with reclaimed timber. www.suenunnartist.co.uk suenunnartist.blogspot.co.uk Facebook: Sue Nunn Artist
or more herbaceous (a typical Sauvignon for example)? Can you smell any vanilla, suggesting time in the barrel?
Now the best bit - take a slurp! Cherry flavours? Perhaps then a Pinot or, if spice, a peppery Syrah/Shiraz? With whites, is there citrus, the cream of an oaky Chardonnay, even the petrol notes of Riesling? Is it mouth-drying, a high tannin (thick-skinned) grape? And does it linger, suggesting quality? Finally, is there balance?
Over time, turning wine sleuth helps to identify the characteristics of different wines and boosts enjoyment. Hone your detective skills and have some fun at one of the many informal tastings available locally. Next month- Christmas wine suggestions

ARKA Original Funerals Funeral Director of the Year 2014
Brighton & Hove’s local independent and green funeral directors, ARKA Original Funerals, has just scooped the main award at the National Good Funeral Awards 2014. Sarah Clarke, one of the funeral directors at ARKA, won the prestigious “Funeral Director of the Year” award. Up against a longlist of ten others nationally, Sarah was delighted to have been awarded.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to have won this award. The Good Funeral Guide is a beacon of good practice and inspiration in the funeral world and I’m honoured to have been recognised in this way. I’d like to thank all the people that voted for me.” ARKA Original Funerals, led by Cara Mair, has been pioneering in this industry for 12 years now and has changed radically the way that families can be supported when someone dies. Cara says:
“We support a lot of really wonderful people and I’m so grateful that people have taken time out to vote for Sarah and ARKA in recognition of the work that we do. We are very focused on choice and empowerment at ARKA. The funerals that we organise are very much about the person, their life and what made them the person that they were. “Funerals play an important role in the process of saying goodbye to someone. The Washington Street Party
Washington Street celebrated on 12 October with an indoor street party at the Hanover Community Centre. Everyone from the street was welcome: young and old, long-term residents and new arrivals, students, families and friends. We wanted to get to know our neighbours better…and to have fun.
The children blinged their bikes and made jewellery. They painted their faces and danced around. We had a swap shop and a HASL stall. We listened to tales of early Hanover and the folk who lived in our street many years ago.
More than 100 people came and partied, including Father Michael ‘Spike’ Wells from the Annunciation Church. The music was local and lively. Singer/guitarist Rob Abbott was followed by American roots band Hatful of Rain, very aptly named, as it was tipping it down outside. Inside, the atmosphere was warm, friendly and full of laughter. Our special thanks to Hanover Community Centre and Hanover Action for Sustainable Living (HASL) for their support. Why not hold a party for your street? Give it a go!

Flu occurs every year. It’s a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious illness. Older people and those with long term health conditions are among the most at risk from flu. The best way to avoid catching and spreading flu is by having a vaccination before the flu season starts.

The Secret Heart of Hanover
The Church of the Annunciation
To mark its 150th anniversary, the Church of the Annunciation in Washington Street opens its doors to host a festival of art, music and drama. Father Michael Wells, aka Spike Wells, renowned jazz drummer, and Brighton diva Marcia Bellamy, Festival Artistic Director, invite you to discover what is happening at the Annun, the secret heart of Hanover. The Annunciation War Letters To commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, the Festival presents a dramatised reading of The Annunciation War Letters. Actors from the Annunciation will be reading the letters in a cafĂŠstyle setting at the church on Remembrance Sunday at 2pm. The reading is directed by Festival Artistic Director, Marcia Bellamy. There will also be a special floral tribute to the fallen of the Great War. Entrance is free. Refreshments will be available. These recently discovered letters present a moving, sometimes tragic account of the ordinary parishioners who went off to war, and of the loved ones they left behind. It provides a unique insight into a Brighton parish in wartime. The vicar of the Annunciation at the outbreak of WWI was Father William Carey. He
encouraged the enlisted men from the congregation to write home to the church, publishing their letters in the parish magazine. The men wrote first from their training camps in Britain, and subsequently from the theatres of war to which they were dispatched, places as far flung as Egypt, Palestine and the Dardanelles. Many, of course, like Walter Greed, were sent to the trenches in France. Their letters contain many unexpected moments of humanity, alongside the harrowing realities of war. There are even moments of humour as the correspondents desperately try to hang onto their vision of life at home, in and around their little church.
Walter Greed One of the last casualties of the war among the Annunciation congregation was Walter Greed. Born in 1885, he had lived with his family at 25 Washington Street. He duly signed up for the Royal Engineers at the outbreak of war, becoming a member of the 221st Army Troops company. He survived right up until the spring of 1918, when his company was caught up in the massive German offensive around St Quentin and Bapaume. Walter was reported missing on the second day of the offensive. His body was never recovered. His parents wrote in the family Bible: ‘Loved by us, mourned by us, gone but never forgotten.’ Regular updates on forthcoming events will appear in the Hanover Directory. Here we bring you the latest news from the Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team...
Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team October’s HEGLAT meeting was a lively one and very well attended due to the presence of our guest speakers from the council’s Planning, HMO Licensing and Environmental Health departments. Each gave a brief outline of what they do, how they do it and why they do it, and it became increasingly obvious that, whilst they appreciate the problems faced by Hanover and Elm Grove with regard to HMOs and students in particular, their hands are very largely tied due to current legislation. Article 4, which is supposed to deal with saturation zones of HMOs in any given area, seems to be largely ineffectual and difficult to enforce, and some decisions not to allow planning have been appealed by landlords with mixed results. The law obviously needs to be tightened in this respect in order to protect communities and their demographics. The October meeting of the Transport, Environment and Sustainability Committee agreed not to push through with plans for a council consultation on parking in the area until later in 2015 when the results of the community survey will be known. This gives us

plenty of time to come up with our own plan if we want to. So the ball is in our court.
The next step will be to form an open working group for all those wanting to work on a community plan for our streets. The plan is not just about parking and could include other changes residents would like made to their street such as planters, getting rid of yellow lines, and cycle racks.
The first meeting will be on Wednesday 19th November at 7pm in the upstairs room at the Southover. All Hanover and Elm Grove residents are welcome. The working group will have several meetings and aim to produce a plan to feed back to the community in February. We have now got hundreds of surveys to process and would appreciate any help with data entry or manipulation.
