The panto is a great family night out. Win a family ticket here....

Win tickets for Jack and the Beanstalk

Music Theatre 2000 and Showtime Productions are proud to bring to the Windmill Theatre a traditional musical pantomime for all the family to enjoy. Packed full of toe-tapping tunes, amazing dance routines, hilarious comedy and fantastic audience participation – this is a show that’s simply not to be missed! Down on their luck, Jack and his mum can barely afford the rent – to make matters worse, the whole town is being terrorised by the evil giant. When Jack is tricked into selling the family cow for a handful of magic beans – and returns home to the furious Dame Trott – their madcap adventure at the top of the beanstalk begins. Will Jack slay the Giant? Will he rescue the girl of his dreams? There’s only one way to find out and that’s to join us on the adventure this Christmas! The show is directed by Nathan Potter and Simon Gray, and features a full company of actors, singers and dancers accompanied by a five-piece band. Jack and the Beanstalk is supporting the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice - the only children’s hospice in Sussex caring for children and young

people with life-shortening illness. It costs over £3 million per year to provide these services. The hospice receives less than 8% of that figure from central government funding, so without the support of the community to raise the balance there would be serious funding issues. There are 10 performances from Monday 22nd December 2015 to Saturday 2nd January 2016 and you can get tickets at www.jackandthebeanstalkbton.com or call the box office on 01273 565130. Tickets cost from £12.50 to £20. Venue: The Windmill Theatre, Nevill Avenue, Hove COMPETITION: We have one prize of four tickets to give away. To enter, answer the following question: What musical instrument did Jack take from the giant’s house? Email your answer to info@hanoverdirectory.co.uk or post your answer, name, address and phone number to Jack & The Beanstalk competition, Sussex Magazines, 10 Hollingbury Road, Brighton BN1 7JA. The winner will be selected at random after the closing date. Competition Terms & Conditions Tickets are valid to see Jack & The Beanstalk at The Windmill Theatre on a date of your choice, subject to availability. Tickets are non-exchangeable. Closing date for entries is 20th November; entries received after this date will not be counted.

Brought to you by the Hanover Action for Sustainable Living...

One Planet Living in Hanover? Hanover Action for Sustainable Living is launching an exciting new project to develop a One Planet Living in Hanover Action Plan! We hope that this would help promote sustainable living, with the engagement of everyone in the local area who can contribute ideas and resources, to improve our community for the benefit of all. The idea behind One Planet Living is to reduce the impact we all make on the earth’s resources, so that it is more aligned to a single planet. Currently the lifestyles of people in Brighton equate to 3.5 planets. Following recent agreement for the Local Action Team and the Hanover Community Centre and HASL to work together on areas of common interest, we would like to build upon this and extend out to all groups in the area to explore the key dimensions of One Planet Living, which include: § Culture and community – reviving local identity, wisdom and culture; support for, participation in, the arts.

§ Health and happiness - encouraging active, sociable, meaningful lives to promote good health and well-being. § Equity and the local economy - a local economy that supports equity in diverse local employment. Other dimensions of One Planet Living include sustainable transport, equity and the local economy, land use and wildlife, sustainable water, sustainable materials, and towards zero waste and zero carbon. Do you have ideas and offers? Could you help promote awareness for local heritage and culture? Promote Zocalo? A Living Wage paid by all local businesses? More street parties? More green roofs to increase urban bio-diversity? Launching a monthly Hanover food market? Insulating our homes? Ideas for increasing recycling rates? Come along for a fun, inspiring and productive launch workshop at the Hanover Community Centre (Upper Hall) on Saturday 28 November, for a 1.30pm start. Further details at www.hasl.org.uk Key Climate Summit in Paris - Time to act

In December, crucial international climate change negotiations will take place. The fight for a safe climate for all neither begins nor ends with these talks. But 2015 is our best moment to come together to demand the world we need: a world with an economy that works for people and planet. In the lead up to these negotiations we will raise our voices calling for bold and definitive action on climate change. (See page 13 for local actions.)

hanover The latest musings of Hanover Dad....

Hanover Dad...Everything but the Kitchen Sink By the time you read this article, I will have just got back from quite an exciting adventure. My lovely wife and I and our two little ones are off to Texas for a family wedding. I’m very excited! I’m excited because I’ve never been to America before, I’m excited because I’ve never met this side of my wife’s family, I’m excited because I want to try real Texas barbeque, but most of all I’m excited by the vast baggage allowance I get with this long haul flight. This is a rare luxury for me. Basically on every trip I’ve had in the past 10 years, I’ve only been allowed hand luggage, or alternatively we’ve just packed our stuff into our little car and driven to France. I’ve always been very limited on space, and, by limited, I mean just a pair of pants and a toothbrush limited. Well, not on this trip - I’ve got a massive suitcase! I’ve packed everything and I’ve only filled less than half of it. I don’t know what else to take? This morning I spent 20 minutes looking at the case and thought, “I know, tools. I should take some tools, just in case the hire car breaks down, or I need to change a plug or something.” After rummaging in my toolbox for a while,

I realised I was being bonkers and had a eureka moment. “Coats!” I shouted. “I can pack a few coats. I never have enough room for coats on holiday.” Whilst foraging in the coat cupboard, I realised the reason I don’t take coats away is because everywhere I go is hotter than here, and Texas is no exception. So there I was, stuck with no idea of what to fill the rest of my case up with, and then it came to me, “Souvenirs!” – “I can buy loads of stuff in America, stuff like big foam pointy hands, cowboy hats, checkered shirts and corn dogs (I have no idea what a corn dog is?). I told my wife this and she seemed suddenly interested in me. “You have space? In your suitcase?” she said. “Yeah, loads,” I replied. “Isn’t yours half empty as well?” Well, that conversation was two hours ago and now my case is so full of my wife’s clothes, I’ll need to sit on it to get the zip shut when I’ve finished writing this! hanover An article prepared especially for the Directory by Q Sales and Lettings...

Extending Your Home

To extend or not to extend? That is the question we are regularly asked by homeowners. Of course, it’s not a simple question to answer and varies considerably dependent on the style and age of the property, and most importantly the owner’s situation. Loft conversions are the most common form of extension in Hanover. The reason for a loft conversion is pretty straight-forward; the homeowner gains an extra bedroom without the disruption and emotional upheaval of moving. When you consider the average costs of moving, including stamp duty, are not that different to the average cost of an extension, you can see why many choose to go down that route. Side return extensions seem to be all the rage at the moment – at least in Brighton; wily Londoners have been at it for years – and there are numerous reasons why. But mostly it is the simplicity of it that makes it so desirable; in a city of period homes many of us are sitting on a wasted bit of space down the side of the house that could be utilised to give us more living space. It is not a cheap way to extend – after all it requires removing an outside supporting wall – but for many the addition of that extra living space is worth every penny. The key question we are asked is whether it is worth extending before selling, and will a seller make money on this. Again, the answer is not black and white. Certainly an extension will increase the value of a home, but to justify the work it needs to turn a profit. As a rule of thumb, for most extensions, the cost of the work is equal to the increase in value. So unless you’re going to benefit from the extension it may be prudent to put that money towards improving your next home. And finally, don’t forget to seek the necessary permissions and consents before undertaking any work on your home. For more ideas on loft conversions, side return extensions, and general home improvements why not visit our Pinterest page at www.pinterest.com/qsaleslettings. James Beale, Q Sales & Lettings

ROOF & FIREWALL Specialists Have you got damp in the corner of a bedroom or along the ceiling of an upstairs wall? Nine times out of ten it’s faulty lead flashings and firewalls causing these problems. The majority of Brighton homes are at least 100 years old and so are their firewalls. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.

News of more community activity in Hanover...

A Day for Celebration

During the second weekend of October, Brighton and Sussex Students’ Union came together to hold Hello! Hubs, an attempt to welcome new people to the area, show them what our community has to offer, and what they have to offer the community. There was free cake, coffee/tea, games and hello! postcards, but most importantly people who brought to life very interesting and positive conversations. It was a day where people, regardless of how different they could be, sat down together to know a bit more about each other and had a bit of fun! Hello! Hub at the Level

With a great team of student volunteers, the Community Organiser from Brighton Students’ Union (Dot) and the Community Engagement Co-ordinator from Sussex Students’ Union (Indi) set up the Elm Room at the Level to welcome everyone invited and everyone passing by. A Community Zineing stall brought together people of different ages, to express through magazine trimmings what they love most about where they live, what was their vision for their

area and what could make it better. While all this was happening, other people were completing in chalk boards the phrases: Community means… “Getting along together. Listening to and helping each other.” Dick Page Hanover & Elm Grove Councillor

I love my community because… “Because I love all friendly people and nature.” (Student) Hello! Hub at Carlton Hill Primary School

At the school we were a great team formed by students and local residents who kindly offered to help on the day. We set up the hall when the amazing cakes from local café Wheat & Beans arrived to start the event just in time! Along with the music which was kindly set up by a music student (Joao) who I met at Freshers Fair in Brighton. It was 11am when Sinead (media student), Brian and Sue (local residents) and myself decided to go out and about to find local people to join us. What a great time we had! And just when the event was about to finish, we had some more people coming and we decided to extend the party! Thank you very much to everyone who came along to say hi, thank you to the amazing people that helped to make this day very special and to those who did a great effort in spreading the word. Best wishes from your Community Organiser, Valentina Gonzalez

Local Action Team News...

Here are your local councillors contact details...

Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team

Councillors for Hanover & Elm Grove

Due to a lack of proper consultation on the future of the 37B bus service we are pushing for an extension to the deadline for comments and also for more traditional paper consultation for residents without internet access.

The Green Party councillors for Hanover & Elm Grove, David Gibson and Dick Page, hold an advice surgery every second Saturday in the month, from 10.15 to 11.15am at Elm Grove School.

The last HEGLAT voted unanimously to urge the council not to cut support for the 37B bus service. Student HMO’s. Don’t forget, there is a “Welcome Information” sheet available for Student HMOs in your street. This can be seen at https://heglat. wordpress.com/lat-meetings/welcome-letter-hmossample/ and click “Hanover St Sample”. Email greysland@sky.com for the editable version to suit your street. Parking. The council has now listed Hanover & Elm Grove as a top priority for consultation on a CPZ based on the HEGLAT community plan. Council will consult the whole area as an initial letter drop on whether they want a consultation on a detailed scheme, and to get agreement on the preferred hours / days / type of schemes on offer to present to Committee in January 2016. The most important thing is for residents to consider the options they would like to be considered. Timeline on this is longer than expected with completion expected for Spring 2017 but we and the council want to get it right. Meanwhile, residents can survey their streets in more detail on things they think would improve their streets. A downloadable survey sheet can be found on: https://heglat.wordpress.com/ under Parking. This should be returned to Councillor David Gibson davidsg@ntlworld.com or Chris Taylor greysland@sky.com.

Update from QS Howlett Clarke As we welcome the beginning of autumn, October is the month at which Howlett Clarke reaches its peak with charity and local community events, and this year has been no different! The period began slightly earlier this year with our Jeans for Gene’s day followed shortly by the Macmillan Coffee Morning; both days provided us with cake, casual clothes and fundraising. We have some brilliant partnerships also running this October, we have teamed up with Bernardo’s in which you can receive a free Will (standard T&C’s apply) and all that is asked for in return is the consideration of leaving a gift in your Will to

Barnardo’s. To see if you’re eligible, you can get in touch with us using the contact details below. Lastly, to finish October off with a bang we have our Wear it Pink, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness, which should be great fun! At Howlett Clarke we are passionate about what we do and as your local law firm we pride ourselves on providing a friendly yet professional approach. Law can often seem as complex and we will always work to put it all into context for you, keeping in regular contact and helping you move forward.
