hanover Welcome to The Hanover Directory
The days are getting shorter and pre-Christmas events are already fast approaching, including the Christmas Artists Open Houses festival, which starts on 23rd November.
St Luke’s Church have their Winter Fair on 23rd November and there’s also a Christmas Makers Market on 24th November at Elm Grove Primary School – all good places to start your Christmas shopping. If you’d like help with being more eco-friendly, Hanover resident Tom Kiss has advice on switching your central heating system from a gas boiler to a fossil-free heat pump. We also have a very helpful guide from local councillor Elaine Hills on what can and can’t be recycled, as well as our regular article from Hanover Action. Have a great November!

hanover hanover The Hanover Advent Calendar will be back in December...
A bright Christmas for Hanover Hanover will be transformed into a real-life advent calendar once again this December for the fourth year running. Every day in December (until the 23rd), homes in one local street will be invited to create festive window displays that glow with Christmas spirit. This is your chance to get as creative as you like and reveal what Christmas really means to you. The event is organised by local residents Gareth Dee, Moira Scott, Fr Anthony Murley and Councillor Elaine Hills. Each participating street will have a rep who will make residents aware of their street’s special date and let them know how to participate. Many streets like to celebrate their street’s lighting-up night with a festive get-together. So let’s make this year Hanover’s sparkliest and Christmassiest yet, while getting to know your neighbours and fellow Hanoverians a bit better.
If you’d like to know more about how to get more involved and when particular streets are being decorated you can join the Facebook group: the Hanover Advent Calendar, or email: hanoveradventcalendar@gmail.com A great place to buy some handmade gifts...
Elm Grove Christmas Makers Market Elm Grove Primary School Christmas Makers Market is on Sunday 24th November, 11.30 -16.30.
There will be over 20 stalls selling beautiful, affordable gifts handmade by dozens of local artists and makers. The fabulous ladies from the PTA will be running a vintage-style tea room and there will be live singing by Brighton acapella group deciBelle, a quiltathon and face painting. There will also be free children’s craft activities to keep the little ones happy whilst their grown-ups browse the stalls. Entry is free, but please bring some cash as not all stallholders will have card payment facilities. You don’t have to have a connection with the school to have a stall. Please contact carolinebuddenmosaic@ gmail.com and ask for an application form. There is a discount for parents and carers of Elm Grove Primary School children; otherwise a stall costs just £30. hanover hanover News from a new local group...
Friends of Whitehawk Hill ‘Friends of Whitehawk Hill’ is a community group that aims to champion this popular and important Downland Local Nature Reserve on the edge of the city. The group emerged from the ‘Save Whitehawk Hill’ community campaign, which successfully opposed the construction of five tower blocks in the Local Nature Reserve. The campaign continues, to get the Nature Reserve removed from the City Plan as a potential development site. Wildlife surveys have been undertaken this summer to make the case.
The Friends want to draw as many participants as possible from the areas surrounding Whitehawk Hill to work together to conserve and restore its landscape and habitats, learn about its archaeology, history, and wildlife and engage people with the Hill. There will be wildlife events, walks, creative events, talks, clean-up sessions and more.
We are in a time of crisis for many native species, as highlighted by the recent ‘State of Nature’ report, so work to conserve habitats and wildlife is more urgent than ever and we can all play a part. We currently have a schedule of habitat management work days, to conserve and restore the important chalk grassland habitat on the Hill, which supports species like the chalkhill and Adonis blue butterflies. This is threatened by scrub invasion and we will be working with the Ranger Paul Gorringe and others to clear this and to extend the traditional sheep grazing on the reserve. The sheep have become a much loved sight on the Hill in recent years. We meet just to the north of the top of Manor Hill, by the information board at 10am. More information on our Facebook Group. Hope to see you there?

hanover Exciting news from a local nursery...
Orchard day nursery is expanding!
New site opens January 2020!
We are absolutely delighted to be expanding our wonderful nursery to the vicarage hall at St Luke’s Church. The space, formerly used by the much-loved St Luke’s Pre-School, is currently being renovated and updated by us and we are looking forward to welcoming preschool aged children from early January.
We absolutely love the space which is ideal for children and with the lovely outside play area will provide a fantastic outcome for learning for the children both indoors and outdoors. Orchard day nursery on Queens Park Road opened in May 1991 and is now in its 28th year of caring for the children within the Hanover and Queens Park community. We are delighted to be able to continue and expand. We have an amazing staff team of all ages and genders who are committed to providing the best of care and education for children. We are extremely proud of our Ofsted outstanding rating. In our nursery we offer a home from home atmosphere with a qualified and nurturing staff team.
We love to go out and have daily trips to Queens Park, weekly excursions to the beach, the library and bigger excursions to garden centres and farms.
We are lucky to have a range of outside teachers who come in weekly to teach music, dancing and yoga. We also run forest school sessions in Queens Park led by our qualified forest school leader. Lots and lots going on!
We have spaces available for children from 20 months to 5 years and we are booking baby spaces now for July 2020.
Please contact us on 01273 622883 or email orchardday@yahoo.co.uk -website www.orcharddaynursery.co.uk - if you would like to visit.

hanover Join the Swing Dancing craze sweeping Brighton (including Hanover)!
Lindy hop at The Islingword
The lindy hop, a type of swing dance, originated in the Savoy Ballroom New York, in the 1930s. Today, more people dance lindy hop than ever before, and Brighton Lindyhoppers are proud of the welcoming and inclusive lindy hop community in Brighton. Led by the infectiously enthusiastic Amanda and Graeme, Brighton Lindyhoppers have been running classes in the city since 2011. Their first class saw 15 people attend, and eight years on they now teach over 200 people on a weekly basis across a number of venues, and work with an amazing team of teachers and volunteers. Their emphasis in class is always on having fun, getting to know your fellow ‘lindy hoppers’ and, in the meantime, learning a dance they are truly passionate about.
“We want people to feel welcome and relaxed in all our classes,” says Graeme. “You don’t need a partner, you don’t need to book in advance, just turn up and we’ll have you dancing within the hour,” adds Amanda. In a typical class you’ll be taught to either lead or follow. Traditionally, men would lead and women follow, but this is the one tradition Brighton Lindyhoppers don’t adhere to.

“We love that people coming to our classes have the choice to lead or follow,” says Amanda. “We want people to be able to experience every aspect of this wonderful dance.”
After teaching the leads and the follows their footwork at the start of a class, everyone is partnered up and next it’s on to learning how to dance together. Everyone changes partners regularly in the class, and so they get to dance with, and meet, lots of people every night. It’s a really friendly atmosphere. “The popularity seems to come from meeting people, making friends, learning something new and the endless laughter this dance brings,” Graeme enthuses. “Plus it’s great exercise without even realising!”
You can catch Brighton Lindyhoppers in Hanover every Thursday at the Islingword Inn, with Beginners class at 7.30pm, everyone welcome. More information at brightonlindyhoppers.co.uk

A NEW TYPE OF DINER
We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.
Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.
Everything we have is completely free of gluten. That's right, everything. Even our house made sourdough, sweet bakes and our buttermilk pancakes. Our aim is excellence as standard. We make super food for super people.

17 17 A councillor report from Steph Powell, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove...
Councillor News...Steph Powell
As I write this, the spectre of a No Deal Brexit hangs over the city. Be assured that, amidst all that uncertainty, your three Green ward councillors are working hard for residents, standing up for the vulnerable, and for the environment. We will continue to do so. Uncertain times: The local election seems so long ago. The political landscape is changing daily. It’s hard to keep up with it all. Statistics tell us that hate crime is sadly on the rise. At the recent TECC (Tourism, Equalities & Culture committee), I raised a BBC report which stated an 80% rise in Trans hate crime. The Brexit debate has brought out the worst in some people, it seems. I was proud therefore, to support the Trans community in attending Trans Pride in July. We are a City of Sanctuary. There is no room for hate here. From our conversations on the doorsteps we know that Brexit and its ramifications is a big deal for residents. As councillors, we know, too, that the council have been working hard over many months to prepare the city for whatever the outcome. Greens felt that it was time for the notes of these meetings to be made public. So Greens requested a Special
Brexit Full Council for all councillors. Notably, the Tory benches were empty... The Greens proposed that these notes be made public, and to support a People’s Vote. Labour councillors supported the Greens on this. Positive, joint working. Ward news: I’ve been keeping an eye on the Planning register, and one such application in the ward is causing a stir; notably the application for an illuminated advertising billboard on the corner of Queens Park Road and Bentham Street. A petition opposing this is at the local Elm Grove Mini Market, should you wish to sign. We have been busy working with the local voluntary “Good Gym”, doing our bit by painting out unsightly graffiti on bins, junction boxes, and weeding, where possible. The problem of graffiti continues... But we are trying! Residents have raised concerns of living next door (or near to) properties being let out by Airbnb, and other similar companies. Some are causing issues in the neighbourhood, mostly with noise. I have raised the issue with officers. A similar problem over in Patcham was brought to a TECC committee. Caroline Lucas MP has also been looking into the issue. Other big cities such as Barcelona, have introduced policies to address this. Our council officers are currently lookin.g at possibilities here, so we will keep you posted. I am here to represent and assist in matters relating to the local area. Please feel free to drop me a line: Steph.powell@brighton-hove.gov.uk

Can you spare an hour to make someone’s week?
Before her health deteriorated, Linda travelled the world and worked as a letting agent and holistic therapist. Since her disabilities developed, she can only leave the house once a week with assistance. A visit from Rebecca, a Together Co Befriending volunteer, makes a huge difference to Linda’s week. Rebecca and Linda
Linda: “When I became housebound, my friendships slowly dissolved as we had less and less in common. My befriending volunteer, Bex, is great. She is the only person I see socially. My carers visit daily to help me with my daily routine, but there’s no time to chat. Together Co match you with someone who shares your interests. Even an hour a week of friendliness can make a lot of difference to my life.” Bex: “Popping round to Linda’s for a cup of tea and a catch-up is something I know we both look forward to each week. It’s a mutually beneficial connection.”
About Together Co Befriending

At present the council are only responsible for removing graffiti from their own buildings and other equipment they own like bins and lamp posts. They are not responsible for removing anything on private property or land, unless it’s offensive. Councillor Anne Pissaridou, chair of the council’s Environment, Transport & Sustainability committee, is urging people to complete the consultation. She also acknowledged that the council needs to clean up its own buildings and equipment. She said: “Some of the consultation is quite controversial as we’re asking people if they think businesses, private homeowners and landlords should remove graffiti from their buildings or pay the council to do so.”
The consultation is open until 15 December. You can find it at: https://consultations.brightonhove.gov.uk/rubbish-recycling-and-streets/ graffiti-removal-enforcement-consultation/

An appeal by Brighton Lions...
A bereavement allotment group for men...
Project Wenceslas
Martlets Earthworks
Brighton Lions Club are once again launching Project Wenceslas, a campaign to help combat fuel poverty. People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions. Excess winter deaths in Brighton & Hove are slightly higher than both England and the South-East. People in difficulty will be contacting agencies such as Age UK who will refer them to Brighton Lions. Direct applications will not be accepted to ensure all the donated money goes to the people who really need it. Brighton Lions will make payments direct to the energy supply companies, not the individual beneficiaries, whose details will not be known to the Lions.
“Last winter we spent more than £9,000,” said Pete Dilloway, President of Brighton Lions Club. “That was an increase of £1,000 on the previous year so there really is a need even in this, the so-called affluent South-East. One of those we helped last winter had been admitted to hospital with hypothermia having been too scared of running up bills to use enough heating.” Donations can be made by credit/debit cards through Brighton Lions Club’s website at www.brightonlions. org.uk or cheques payable to Brighton Lions Wenceslas should be sent to Brighton Lions Club, c/o 9 Westfield Crescent, Brighton, BN1 8JB. People sending cheques are asked to confirm that their donations may be treated as Gift Aid so that the value of the donation can be increased by 25%.
Earthworks is a space for bereaved men to meet and get together to grow, harvest, tend and maintain Martlets’ new allotment. Throughout the year Martlets will be offering sessions on mornings, afternoons, evenings and on a Saturday. Previous gardening experience is not required and attendees are free to take on whatever jobs interest them, be it lighter work pricking out seedlings or getting stuck into digging and clearing. The course will run for 12 weeks from the beginning of November and any bereaved man is welcome to attend; you do not need a connection with Martlets.
The session starts with a cuppa in the allotment shed around the wood burner. Sharing experiences of loss while working with the natural cycle of life through the seasons can be a healing experience. For more information, please contact Martlets’ Patient and Family Support Administrator on 01273 273400, or email bereavement@martlets.org.uk.

2525 This article is by Hanover resident Tom Kiss...
Goodbye to gas in a terraced house in Hanover When our boiler died earlier this year, after 15 years of service, phoning the plumber to get a quote for a new one seemed like the only option. But, it had also been just a few weeks since I’d signed one of many anti-fracking petitions online. A new gas boiler lasting as long as the previous one would be in service until 2034; are we not meant to be ending our use of fossil fuels to combat climate change?
Doing some research I soon discovered that there are other options available, as well as grants. Solar wasn’t the best option due to our limited roof size. Woodburning stoves were a no-no due to their carcinogenic PM emissions and impact on inner-city air quality. Heat pumps appeared to be suitable, but what are they exactly? Heat pumps work by absorbing heat from a given source: air, ground or water. This heat can then be used to heat radiators and create hot water. They do this using electricity, and extremely efficiently too.

Our regular article from Hanover Action...
A Citizens’ Assembly for Brighton
In December 2018, Brighton and Hove City Council was one of the first councils in the UK to declare a climate and biodiversity emergency. 245 councils around the country have now made the same declaration, and the UK Parliament followed suit in May this year. But what does this mean in practice? How are our governments - and how are we as citizens responding to the emergency that is unfolding before us? Hanover Action is working with a coalition of local community and environmental groups to call on Brighton and Hove City Council to form a “Citizens’ Assembly” that will allow residents to have their voice heard on the actions we need to take to tackle the crisis. Citizens’ Assemblies have taken place all over the UK on a variety of issues: from social care to Brexit. They are seen as an effective form of “participatory democracy” – a way in which citizens can be more directly involved in informing political decisions – especially around challenging issues where there are strong views on all sides.

In February this year, Brighton and Hove City Councillors unanimously committed to achieving net zero emissions in the city by 2030. The Brighton and Hove Citizens’ Assembly on the Climate and Biodiversity Emergency would help to identify the measures that we should take, in our homes, communities and at the city level, in order to achieve net zero carbon emissions in the next ten years.
The Citizens’ Assembly would involve a randomly selected group of residents from Brighton and Hove; fifty people that provide a representative balance of the city’s population, for example in terms of age, gender, income bracket and ethnic diversity. Those fifty people would be involved in a process – carried out over a few evenings or weekends – where they would learn more about the climate crisis, hear from experts on what we can do, and then, through a carefully facilitated exchange, come up with a series of recommendations for actions for the council, and us as residents, to take. An independent and non-partisan advisory group would be there to guide the process, with representation from the political parties, as well as from local business and community groups.
We have a strong team of dedicated volunteers who have been working to develop the Citizens’ Assembly concept in partnership with the Council. If you are interested in helping to make this happen, please get in touch with Hanover Action at contact HASL@gmail.com For further information, visit:

We received this from a Hanover resident...
Proposed electronic billboard on our street Clear Channel (the world’s largest outdoor advertising company), together with their commercial estate agent Carter Jonas, have applied for permission to install an LED, internally lit (backlit) billboard to replace the current unlit poster billboard at 185 Elm Grove. This is actually on Bernard Road on the west side of the corner building with the Elm Grove Mini Market. The backlit screen will be 3m x 6m, the same size as the current one.
The effect in daytime will be approximately as above. However at night this will create a
bright light that has not been there before as the current poster is not lit. Light pollution and the preponderance of an increasing number of LED advertising displays create a modern blight on quietly lit neighbourhoods, devalue the aesthetic of our towns and cities and reduce our property values.
If you wish to comment on the planning application, please go to:
http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ planningapplications and search for application BH2019/02541. I live on Elm Grove. Email me (Robert) if you would like more information: dreamroadstudio@gmail.com My posted comment (excerpt) is as follows:
This is totally inappropriate for a residential street. This is pollution of the neighbourhood airspace and will definitely be detrimental to nearby property values. Lighted advertising signs are a corporate intrusion and extend out and into our quiet neighbourhood. This one will be particularly distracting to drivers as they approach the stop light that is 75ft or so behind it. A local event...
St Luke’s Church Winter Fair
St Luke’s Church in Queen’s Park Road will be holding their Winter Fair on Saturday 23rd November, from 10am to 2pm.
There will be lots of stalls selling homemade cakes, refreshments, bric-à-brac, jewellery, books, CDs and DVDs, plus a bouncy castle to keep the children entertained. to advertise, please call 01273 551021 or visit www.hanoverdirectory.co.uk
