Welcome to the October Edition of the Hanover Directory

Horrible to have to admit, but I think it is now indisputable that summer has indeed passed and that we are now in autumn. Autumn isn’t so bad however...the colours are amazing and you can’t beat those fresh autumnal mornings. So what have we for you this month? We have an article about

Community Organisers: well worth being aware of this, so read page 9. We also, hopefully, if it arrived in time for our deadline, have an interview with our Hanover street sweeper. If you can’t find it in the magazine, do not fear – it will definitely be in next month. We also bring you the usual community updates from the Hanover Community Association, Hanover Action for Sustainable Living, the Local Action Team and The Church of the Annunciation. Not forgetting, of course, the ever popular Hanover Dad!! So, enjoy the season and watch out for all the ghosts and ghouls at the end of the month! The bizarre situation in 1970. Developers bought most of the 1820s houses to build fresh offices, but Miss H Silvester, who had lived at Number 9 for 50 years, refused all offers for her property and refused to budge. The new blocks were built either side, and her house was shored up. She was in the house when the photograph was taken on 15 February 1970, some years after the offices were built. She died in March 1974, aged 89. Her house was then demolished and the offices linked up. Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. Influenza, or ‘flu’, is a common, highly infectious viral illness that is spread by coughs and sneezes, and is especially widespread in the winter months. It can leave you feeling extremely tired and achy, with symptoms of a high temperature, headache, sore throat, and often nausea and a cough. The symptoms last around a week on average, and are more severe and longer-lasting than those caused by the common cold. You can also infect other people during the first 5-6 days. In the UK, around 600 people a year die from a complication of seasonal ‘flu, and this can rise to 13,000 during an epidemic. So have the ‘flu’ jab for‘flu’-free winter!

Have you met this lady yet ( on right of photo?) If not you will do in the next 12 months or so...

Hanover and Elm Grove Community Organiser

Hello, Hanover residents! My name is Valentina Gonzalez and I am your new Community Organiser. I am independent, apolitical and I will be in the area of Hanover and Elm Grove for one year listening to people to know about what they love about living in the area, what are their concerns, how they would like to see the area improving etc, with the aim of building a stronger sense of community. I have been listening to some residents already and they have shared their great ideas which hopefully will be turned into action soon! Some of the ideas are a virtual library to exchange books and meet other neighbours, a mums’ club, a community picnic, street parties to meet new residents, more colourful and greener streets, a community street-sweeping day during the winter and to have the Hanover Day back!

Frequently asked questions... Who do I work for?

I work for a national charity called Locality that is running the Community Organiser programme all around the UK. It is the first time they have run the programme in Brighton. You can find more information about the organisation and what they do on these websites: http:// locality.org.uk/ http://www.cocollaborative.org.uk/. Who keeps the information?

The information belongs to the community; the information belongs to you! Although it may look like I am doing a survey by asking some questions, I am actually having a conversation to identify residents who have similar interests, concerns and passions, in order to connect them to do great things together! At the end of my year I will hand my notes to a group of residents who commit to safeguard the information gathered and continue listening to the community. A bit about myself

that gives Brighton its character‌and I love the sea! I love being a Community Organiser, because I get to meet different people and I get to witness human beings doing great things together to make their area and our city an even better place! hanover Hanover Action for Sustainable Living...

The Food Waste Collective: A Community Call to Action By Debbie Hardy, Charlotte Haworth and Vera Zakharov

The Food Waste Collective is a network of local volunteers tackling food waste and food poverty through community action. Since 2013 we’ve diverted five tonnes of surplus food to over 40 local charities. We host Good Food for Good Causes redistribution days, and will be holding our first public Feast at the Lantern Fayre on 5th October. Debbie, Charlotte and Vera from FWC decided to share our perspectives on the collective’s work and why we’re taking part.

Why is food waste action important? V: Food is our connection to the Earth and its great gift to us. Tackling food waste is my way of honouring and celebrating the gift. Our city has so much energy and community spirit; people want to take action on the city’s food waste, and now they can – together. What inspired you to get involved in FWC? C:We have so much food going to waste, yet people go hungry even here in Brighton & Hove. The UN Trade & Environment Review 2013 revealed that globally we produce enough food for 12 billion people. Being part of the FWC is a positive way to combat these issues locally. What do you love about the Good Food events? D: It’s heartening to connect charities that need food to the busi-

nesses that have food to donate; knowing that somewhere in Brighton & Hove people are able to enjoy a hot meal and socialise because of a few hours donated to the FWC.

What’s the aim of putting on the Feast? D: We’re cooking a free public meal for hundreds using only surplus food donations from local businesses. We want to highlight just how much is going to waste in Brighton & Hove and provide a hot, nutritious meal to everyone.

What do you hope to be the public response? C: When I’ve done similar events in the past, people respond positively and get inspired to become involved in food activism. We live in abundance and it’s so simple to share. It helps people to get creative, and the only limit is your imagination! What long-term impact do you hope to see? V: Dining en masse with friends and strangers is quite powerful. My hope is that the Feast will get the city to take notice and offer long-term support for redistribution. I want it to inspire local businesses, the council and residents to get involved and be part of the solution. If you want to get involved with the Feast, please email foodwastecollective@gmail.com with the subject LANTERN VOLUNTEER. If you are a local business and would like to donate, please email with the subject LANTERN DONATE.

hanover Hanover Gourmet Girls Pub Review...

The Southover- Southover Street

This month the Gourmet Girls visited the Southover on Southover Street up the top of the hill. Thai on a Thursday seemed like a good idea so up we went to ‘Koh Samui’ at the Southover. We got there at 7pm and were met by a warm welcoming atmosphere with familiar faces and friendly bar staff who remembered some of us from previous dinners and boozy nights.

The bar was busy but we ordered quickly and all the staff were very attentive .It was child and baby friendly and we noticed that dogs were also welcome.

Again, we chose a range from the menu: mixed starter, Yum Talay (a spicy seafood salad), Yum Woonsen (Authentic ‘very spicy’ pork mince salad), Pad Thai, Beef Noodle soup and a classic Thai Massaman Curry with Jasmine rice. The starters came on time and were really tasty and moreish. They were quickly polished off and there was almost an hour wait for the main courses which gave us a chance to catch up with each other but was a

long time.

When the main courses came we were really impressed with the menagerie of tastes we were presented with. The seafood salad was unusual and really packed many tastes and textures, we felt it was more suited to an additional dish as it was quite small but really was something special. The pork mince salad was super hot which was clearly authentic but very unexpected. We felt a warning or heat guide would be a good idea so it was clear which dishes were really hot. The Pad Thai was classically good, tasty and did not disappoint. All in all great value for money and highly recommended by all of us for a lovely night out.

Overall Gourmet Girls ratings (out of 5 stars): Food = 4 stars

“Really great combination of tastes with the Thai salads but could have been a bigger portion.”

“I’ve not eaten anything as authentic as the pork salad outside of Asia, set my head ‘on fire’.” “The nourishing soup was very filling.”

hanover Hot on the heels of our new monthly column from local food reviewers The Gourmet Girls, we welcome another regular contributor - The Wine Woman - who will be providing some useful tips for getting more from our bottles.

Welcoming The Wine Woman

Cheers! Welcome to my column on all things wine related. A local wine enthusiast, I will be sharing some tips for seeking out hidden gems and some pointers for getting the most from your wine. The focus of this first column is one of my favourites – sherry. Much misunderstood, sherry is well worth another look and offers great value.

Put aside all memories of the insipid creamy sherries of yesteryear and try some of the alternatives below.

For an interesting aperitif try a Fino. The layer of flor – a yeasty film which protects the sherry from oxygen - produces a bone dry, crisp wine, ideal with tapas, toasted almonds, olives and hard cheeses. Or a salty Manzanilla, also great with seafood. A richer, nuttier, dry Oloroso partners with lean meats and is particularly good with the wonderful locally produced Sussex blue cheeses. The dark, sweet and syrupy PX is simply wonderful poured over vanilla ice cream or drizzled on warm cherry pancakes.

All major supermarkets stock a decent range of sherries but some of the local independents offer an even better selection, so this month try one and banish the ghost of sherry past for good. Next Month- How to Taste Wine

1717 The second in a series of articles uncovering some of the treasures and stories of the Royal Pavilion...

A Micro-Masterpiece...by Caan Wells

Legend has it that, when the Royal Pavilion was purchased from the Royal Household by the Brighton Corporation in 1850, workmen who were exploring the cellars found many intriguing articles including hundreds of empty wine bottles, dusty tomes…and a large, square stone, face down on the floor.

As it was turned, to the workmen’s surprise, the underside revealed a head and shoulders portrait of the Prince Regent dressed in robes of the Garter. Upon closer inspection the portrait turned out not to be oil on canvas as first thought but rather a micro-mosaic formed of incredible detail and skill.

In 1819 Pope Pius VII requested from Sir Thomas Lawrence a replica of the portrait of the Prince Regent which Lawrence had painted of him and exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1818. Lawrence made several copies of his standing portrait of the Prince Regent, one of which hangs in the main entrance of the Royal Pavilion. Lawrence duly sent a replica to Rome which now hangs in the Vatican Galleries. Pius VII ordered the

head and shoulders of the replica to be copied in marble mosaic in the Vatican workshops by Domenico Moglia with the intention of presenting it as a gift to the Prince Regent. Born in 1780 in Cremona, Domenico Moglia was a designer, sculptor and woodcarver in the Vatican workshops. He later became a professor of design and was responsible for the ornament of the Arco della Pace in Milan.

Pius VII died in 1823 and Moglia, as shown by the signature and date, didn’t complete the mosaic until 1829.

The following year George IV also died and the portrait made its way to England only after the King’s death. It is said to have been sold to an anonymous buyer for £4,000. Whatever the true early history, we know from records kept in the Royal Pavilion archives that the mosaic was purchased by the Brighton Corporation from a Dr Willington in June 1888 at the cost of £150, who had received it as a gift from one of his patients, who we can assume was the original anonymous buyer.

Whilst the early history of the mosaic is intriguing, most fascinating is the portrait itself which is formed out of half a million marble and semi-precious stones such as cornelians, lapis lazuli, beryl and corals for drapery and skin, and other rare stones for the jewels of the Order of the Garter. Each piece of stone is no more than a quarter of an inch long and an eighth of an inch wide. The eyes, being the centre-piece of this masterwork, contain hundreds of the tiniest pieces imaginable. It is considered by connoisseurs to be one of the finest Vatican mosaics in the world and is a masterly example of the use of stones to imitate paint. It took seven years to make and is in near perfect condition with no stone being lost. The original cost of the mosaic in 1819 is estimated to be £20,000, it is framed in iron-gilt and weighs around half a ton. The micro-mosaic is one of the most beautiful objects in the collections here at the Royal Pavilion, being a favourite of designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen among others. The only shame in this story is that the Prince Regent, who was such a patron of the arts and lover of beautiful and unique objects, did not get to see the finished portrait before his death.

The portrait is currently on display in the Yellow Ante Room of the Royal Pavilion – SEE IT FOR FREE AS A MEMBER! Call 01273 295898 to join.

Hanover Person - Kirsty What is your name and where in Hanover do you live? Hey, I am Kirsty and I live on Queen’s Park Road. How long have you lived in the area? I first came to Brighton from Scotland on a hen weekend in August 2011 and fell in love with the place and the people. I then came back to explore it further and I decided that Brighton was perfect for me. I moved down at the start of March 2012. What do you most like about living in Hanover? Hanover to me is like the 80s kids’ cartoon, Pigeon Street: very colourful and full of quirky characters such as Long Distance Clara, and Mr Jupiter and his dog Flash... These are characters from the show, but I give the people of Hanover such names and I am known as ‘Kirsty, the Crazy Dog Lady’ - I did not give myself this name! What would you most like to see improved in the area? Letting agents to get landlords to complete damp proof courses on rented flats - most I know badly need it. We notice you are a yoga instructor... Tell us more? In Edinburgh in 2011 I became a personal trainer but used yoga for my own fitness practice. When I moved to Brighton I practised in some amazing studios, then decided to train to become a yoga teacher in London with Sun Power Yoga. We were not trained in a specific style so it gives you freedom to be creative with your classes. Mine are stripped back, classic ‘vintage’ yoga and to keep with that theme I use a portable record player and play music I love.

What is the most enjoyable part of your job? I love seeing people progress and achieve their goals such as weight loss, improving their stamina or building confidence. With yoga it is amazing seeing new students learn safely and develop their practice. The best part is their glowing faces after we finish the practice; it is almost like you can see the Prana (the energy) running through them! How could someone find out more about what you offer? I currently teach two yoga classes at St Luke’s Church on Queen’s Park Road: Sundays 5-6pm (£6), Tuesdays 10-11am (£4) (you can bring pre-school kids or babies) I teach two classes at About Balance (14 East Street – above V-Bites): Monday 10-11am (£8) Friday 10-11.30am (£10) In addition, I also do one-to-one sessions of yoga or personal training. How do we contact you? Meet-up Group: www.meetup.com/Sun-PowerYoga-Brighton/ Email: a2b@live.co.uk Call/Text: 07936 925 040 What is your greatest claim to fame? I applied to be in the Singing Kettle (famous children’s theatre group in Scotland!) last year. Unfortunately for them they chose the wrong lady, as they have just announced this Christmas is their final tour.

Hanover Dad...

Down on the Farm

Where I grew up in East London, there wasn’t a lot in the way of green spaces. There was the local park, which was inhabited mainly by extremely aggressive Canadian geese and a selection of inoffensive, but persistent, flashers. There certainly wasn’t anything like the open spaces you get here in Sussex, and, other than a local pub my parents frequented that had a pig and a rabbit in the beer garden, I certainly didn’t spend any time at farms.

It’s interesting as a parent though, as I now spend a lot of time at farms. It’s funny also that, when I think of farms and farming, I remember lessons at school where you learnt about arable farming, livestock farming and crop rotation and the like. It seems to me that the only thing that farmers ‘produce’ now are soft play areas, trampolines and overpriced souvenir shops. This is because the farms I regularly go to are ‘activity’ farms for the kids, and there are loads of them. I’m truly amazed that when I go to the supermarket there is any food actually being grown. I go to the butcher’s and see signs like ‘locally sourced’ and I think to myself, “Locally sourced from where? The five nearest farms to here that I know specialise in tractor rides, hay bale climbing areas and kids’ parties.”

I remember farming subsidies being in the news a few years ago, as farmers couldn’t afford to produce their goods. I saw farmers driving their tractors around Westminster in protest. Who knows if this could happen again, with farmers storming the EU headquarters in Luxembourg demanding equal subsidies in order to be able to upgrade their picnic areas in line with the rest of Europe!

This article probably sounds like I’ve got it in for farmers, but it’s not true. I’m only mildly annoyed with them. The reason why is that, the last time I went to the farm, we were looking at some animals and the farmer asked me, “Which side of the chicken has the most feathers?” – “I don’t know,” I replied, and he said, “The outside, stupid.” My kids are still laughing at me. he Annunciation

s month the Annunciation presents a new play. The Gospel According to Lilian, written by Stephen Plaice, is hing the history of the church for his recent book. the Annunciation as late as the 1970s. The sisters lived in the mission house in Lincoln Street, which can still be seen today. We spoke to Stephen Plaice about his play and its contemporary resonances. Q: What was the content of the visions?

A: It’s not exactly clear from the letters, but I have chosen to associate them with Mary Magdalene, a troubled figure in the New Testament, out of whom Christ cast seven demons. Lilian, the name I’ve given to the young woman in the play, also listens to an inner demon, but she imagines it is a direct manifestation of the spirit of the Magdalene. Q: Why do you think this subject has contemporary relevance?

A: The Church of England, including our little church, is experiencing a time of great change, when women are at last being allowed to become priests and even bishops. But this acknowledgement of the feminine aspect in Christianity can already be seen, in my view, in the New Testament itself. My idea is that Mary Magdalene was actually a disciple, the real twelfth disciple. Q: Is there a gospel of Mary Magdalene or have you invented it?

A: There are fragmentary gospels which cast her and her relationship with Christ in a very different light to the accepted versions. I have taken the existing fragments a bit further, and imagined that Lilian believes that she is receiving the true Gospel of

Christ’s life from the spirit of Mary Magdalene. But it’s left to the audience to decide whether Lilian’s visions are genuine, or if they are emerging from her disturbance.

Q: Will those who have little or no relationship to Christianity find relevance in the play? A: I hope so. They will certainly find it an immersive theatrical experience in Hanover’s beautiful church. It’s struck me several times during rehearsals how closely drama and religion are related. It is a play about the way institutions deal with truth-tellers and whistle-blowers. The Church’s first instinct is to suppress new ideas that challenge any aspect of faith - traditions must be upheld. But then, fifty years later, these ideas are regarded as necessary. Lilian’s understanding of Christ and Mary Magdalene is new. Her visions may come out of her own troubled spirit, but they reflect something quite universal, the feminine power in religion that has been suppressed by male dominated religions, and in the Christian Church only allowed to flourish in the idea of the Virgin. Q: So is the Church of England really changing? A: The first female bishop will probably be ordained in the next twelve months, but there is still a long way to go before the wider Christian Church will accept we all have an equal right to profess our spirituality and to minister to others if we feel called. Q: Were you called?

A: I was called to be a playwright.

Our the controversial topic of parking controls. It appears that guest speakers will be Martin Reid (Head of Private Sector residents north of Elm Grove and east of Queen’s Park Housing), Liz Hobden (Local Development Team Manager), Road want to keep things as they are, whereas residents Annie Sparks (Environment and Noise) and Russell Pugh in Lincoln Street, Toronto Terrace, Montreal Road and Bel(Senior Environmental Health Officer). As we taining hour! get results in, we send a letter to all residents summarising We are also inviting the chief executive of Cityclean to report the main opinions in the street and these letters then go on the HEG LAT website for all to see. Quite a few questions back, as was promised, on progress with the new collection have been asked about the surveys, so there is a FAQ rotas. All are welcome! section on the website also. Neighbourhood Survey latest One of the main figures we need to get now is the actual So far we have had returns of our neighbourhood survey on number of vehicles owned by Hanover residents and streets, transport and parking in Bonchurch Road, Linregistered to their addresses, ie the number of vehicles coln Street, Franklin Road, Toronto Terrace, Hallett Road, eligible for permits under the council’s requirements. We Belgrave Street, Beaufort Terrace (ongoing), Montreal Road can then compare that number with the number of spaces (ongoing) and Baxter Street. More surveys are under way that would be likely to be available under any CPZ and in Queen’s Park Road, Baxter Street, Milton Road, Howard then see if a CPZ would be viable or not. Road, Hampden Road, Bentham Road and Holland Street Can you help with data inputting? These are community surveys based on volunteers and, as they have been popular, we will have a lot of results to data input by mid October. Amazingly 25 people have offered to help with the surveys, but we will need more help! So if you are good with spreadsheets (or are just happy to count up the numbers for us) please can you get in touch. Then what? Once we get the last surveys inputted, we shall convene an open working group to see if there is a way of coming up with a community proposal for controlling parking that suits the majority of people in Hanover. If we come up with a proposal, we shall check it out with residents before asking council officers and councillors to support it. Last chance - would you like your road surveyed? We are going to call a halt to surveys at the end of October but, if you would like to add your road into the survey before then AND can help, please contact Chris Taylor on greysland@sky.com and David Gibson on davidsg@ ntlworld.com Subscribe to our newsletter by emailing heglatters@gmail. com or going to the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/heglat.
