Welcome to Hanover!!
So, September was great wasn’t it! Record temperatures and a very welcome extension to Summer!
This month however Summer really does start to recede into the past and it all culminates on 30th October with the clocks going back an hour....so mark that one on your calendar. Good timing for Halloween however when all the local ghosts and ghouls come out for the annual Trick or Treating and Halloween parties. Enjoy the autumnal colours!

hanover Richmond Street and Sussex Terrace
Sussex Terrace was originally a street in its own right and numbers 21-40 are now part of John Street. In 1939 numbers 15 and 16 collapsed due to a burst water main, and 17 and 18 were found to be in a dangerous condition, and later demolished. In 1946, cottages in Apollo Terrace collapsed into this site and the adjoining cottages were cleared, leaving five small houses in a fairly large open area. With the intention of laying out a permanent open space, Brighton Corporation took steps to acquire these houses. In this view from 1963 are 81, 82 and 83 Richmond Street, demolished in 1964. To see a map of this area before redevelopment, visit mybrightonandhove.org.uk and look under “Richmond Street”. Meet a local resident...
Hanover Person – Liz Cook
Liz Cook of Lincoln Street runs her own business, Liz Cook Charts, producing nutritional and other health and wellbeing charts and her nutrition guide/cookbook, “So, What Do You Eat?”
How long have you lived in Hanover? 24 years. My house is blue, white and orange with a big yellow sun on the front. I always meant to move out to the country but now I appear to be one of the longest-standing residents in my street. There must be something good about this place. J What is your favourite place in Hanover to eat?
Not fair, too many to choose from…. Hmm… The Reservoir for Thai, Wild Cherry for healthy stuff, Tom’s pies at The Constant Service. Pubs seem to change catering quite often so I will always go and try when a new kitchen opens… Why did you first start designing wallcharts?
I was vegan and wanted to bring my son up on an animal-free diet. I wanted to know he was going to get all the nutrients he needed and went back to all my university text books (no internet to Google all the answers then) and consolidated everything from there to find the best sources everyone agreed on and put them into an at-a-glance thing so that when someone inevitably said, “Oh, but where is he going to get his x, y, z?”, I had the answer at my finger-tips. All my friends asked me to photocopy it for them…. That was 25 years ago and my son seems to have survived and so has my business. Other people asked me to do other charts. My yoga teacher Michelle Cobbin (also Hanover) asked me to do the yoga one, for example.
The book came along when I was doing schools talks on animal-free diets and the young people would say, “I want to be vegetarian but my parents won’t let me,” and I thought a simple nutrition guide and recipes

to go with the wall chart would tick all the boxes for them to get what they needed to leave out the animal products and to convince their parents they knew what they were doing. That was in 1999 and we are in the third reprint now. Tell us more about your charts...
The Nutrition Wallchart is a hand-written and illustrated table showing some of the best plantbased sources of all the essential nutrients. There are many other charts including the Essential Oils Chart, a Yoga Chart, a Natural Cleaning Solutions Chart, a You and Your Dog chart and a Colouring Plate chart for children. A book on relationships from a Hanover writer...
Local Author – Poppy Ginger
Hanover resident Poppy Ginger tells us about her first book, Zombie Slayer Vacancy.
What is your book about? My relationship and dating history laid bare! It was like I had a check list: The Joker, The Cheat, The Drunk, The Stalker, The Handsome, The Abusive, The Bed Wetter... I was making my way through them all like Goldilocks, to see which one was the least salty. My book is about my disappointing diet! This is why I write as my pseudo name ‘Poppy Ginger’, as my intention is not to embarrass myself or ridicule others, but it was important to be able to talk honestly about my real life. Readers have commented that they related to at least one story. In particular, when writing about domestic violence, I wanted to speak out in the hope that others would find strength in my experience and humour in recovery. How did you come up with the idea? My friends and sisters were always fascinated by my windmill of relationships, with everyone always telling me I should write a book about them. Writing down my memories in an effort to understand what was going wrong, was very successful therapy. Laughing at myself with the reader and sharing deep secrets I had never even told my sisters was scary, but cathartic and I had to do it! How long have you lived in Hanover? I have lived in a topsy-turvy Hanover house for three years and I don’t intend moving out any time soon! What do you like about the area? I love having my friends all within walking distance, even if that walk makes my heart beat out my throat when I climb Elm Grove. Hanover is bursting with animal lovers, and I feel like my dog and cat are just as much part of the neighbourhood as I am!
Have you got any more books planned? I love writing! I was overwhelmed by the response from my first book and even had a ‘reality-star-instagramendorsement’ (which I believe matters to those under 30). Seeing as she has 43,362 more followers than my non-pseudo self, I’m hoping it will catch a publisher’s eye! I am writing a second book. And there’s a third drafted up for a rainy day. Life is always moving forward, so I’m never short of inspiration! “Zombie Slayer Vacancy” by Poppy Ginger is available from Amazon in paperback and on Kindle.

A new place that all cyclists should know about...
Brighton Bike Hub Brighton Bike Hub is a new community and student volunteer-led cycle workshop based at FIELD on Lewes Road, Brighton, and is a partnership between Bike Hub (which some of you may have seen before at Circus Street) and Brighton Students’ Union Bicycle Co-op, and is supported by FIELD.
Everyone is welcome! We offer second hand bike sales as well so you can buy an affordable bike to get you around town. The hub is a great space to swap and learn new skills with the emphasis on picking up hands-on practical skills to keep your bike running smoothly. You can also enjoy the on-site FIELD community café, run by Old Tree Brewery, as well as enjoying the edible landscaping which is used to produce items on their menu. It’s not all about fixing bikes! Bike Hub also organises social rides with Bike Train to Lewes Bonfire Night on Sat 5th Nov, the biggest ride event of the year. Riding to the Lewes Bonfire Night is the best way to get there as public transport is so busy and there is no parking. Throughout the year there are other events such as Women’s Bike Night, Apple Day ride and events to celebrate Bike Week. Bike Hub also offers volunteer opportunities to students and the local community; a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and have fun.

Greetings from Hanover Queen’s WI.
We are delighted to report that our fundraising project has been successful. We have hit our target of £10,000.
Hanover Queen’s WI
Music and Wine at St Luke’s New Series
Our next meeting is Thursday 13th October at 7.30pm in the Islingword Inn, 175 Queen’s Park Road, BN2 9ZA. We have not finalised the programme yet but, as always, it will be fun and visitors are always welcome. Hint of the Month An ice pack is a useful addition to your first aid kit. Ice packs from a popular online retailer range from £2.90 to £9.99. A 900g packet of basic frozen peas costs 69p and works just as well. Recipe of the month Baseless Quiche This is such an easy supper. Grease a casserole dish. Add a small tin of drained sweetcorn, a chopped red onion and half a cup of grated cheese. In your blender/smoothie-maker mix: 3 eggs 1 cup milk 1 teaspoon baking powder ¼ cup flour 1 tablespoon oil. Bake for 40 minutes at 170 Celsius. Add chopped ham/bacon if you want.
Ensemble Burletta
Thank you to those of you who have given time and money. Satie’s Vexations was an unforgettable experience and raised around £2,000 in addition to nearly £2,500 on crowdfunding. This means we can afford the best possible restoration for the piano and look forward to its return in January 2017. This month we are hosting two concerts:
On Friday 7th October, Ensemble Burletta (clarinet, violin, viola and cello) present Austro-Hungarian chamber music including Hummel, Mozart, Hans Gal and Kodaly. Includes pre-concert talk at 7pm.
On Friday 21st October we welcome back The Fretful Federation. The Sussex-based mandolin orchestra play their usual eclectic mix with Handel, Elgar and Scott Joplin as well as modern compositions and folk tunes. Guest artists are Sussex folk players Bryan Creer and Valmai Goodyear on English concertinas. Tickets cost £7 / £5 concessions / free to under-16s accompanied by an adult. Please visit http://theindependent.pub/stlukes-music-wine-set-menu/ for information of a special meal offer at The Independent Pub. The concerts take place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, at 7.30pm. For more information, visit: www.stlukesconcerts.webeden.co.uk.

hanover A new photography exhibition in The Open Market...
An Ark in the UK
With a nod and a wink to the 40th anniversary of punk culture hitting the streets of the UK, an exhibition that combines photography and ephemera goes on show from October 4th at The Open Market, London Road. It is the creation of Brighton resident George Coles who describes it as a personal, irreverent and satirical view of various aspects of our modern world by looking at manʼs relationship with his furry, slimy, scaly and feathered friends. References stretch broad and wide, from climate change and GM through to refugees and Brexit.
‘An Ark in the UKʼ has little of Rotten and Vicious but is more to do with road kill and vermin and at its heart is a photographic A-Z inventory of creatures whether alive, dead or mythical that have been found within these shores and chosen for salvation from the rising waters. As in the Bible and Koran versions of this story, they enter this ark two by two, but here the pairs are not breeding mates of like species; they are chosen on alphabetical criteria. Darwin would have termed it an ‘unnatural selectionʼ, so in essence the project is unsustainable and doomed to failure. The images themselves are predominantly urban; the ‘handʼ and appearance of man is apparent in all of them, indeed they may say more about life on two legs rather than on four, six, or eight.
The metaphorical ark which has been specially built for the occasion by George and his son Wilf comprises four large hardwood cabinets with the photographs and ephemera hidden from view behind doors. It is for the inquisitive to open them and find what lies within these 21st century ‘cabinets of curiositiesʼ. The exhibition is part of Brighton Photo Fringe and will run from October 4th (the day given to celebrate Francis of Assisi, patron saint of the animals) until October 23rd.
No computers were harmed in the making of this exhibition. Further details from www.thestraggler.net.

The latest news from Hanover Action...
“Greening” Hanover’s Urban Space
From the plant pots to our magnificent elms and purple beech trees, making Hanover greener and more verdant is easier than you think. Following Hanover Action’s green asset audit we can see lots of opportunities. In-between the bay windows of Islingword Place, the pots are proliferating where green-fingered neighbours occupy vacant outside spaces to the pleasure of all. The blooming front gardens of Arnold Street and the luscious plantings of Montreal Road and Queen’s Park Road produced a little house envy amongst the auditors. The hanging baskets and the like of The Admiral, Montreal, and the Village pubs really make those street corners cheerful. Our 30 street planters need your help; several are beautifully tended and several others are self-sustaining with sparrow and bumblebee friendly shrubs needing only a little help from the council’s bush trimmers and kindly local residents to keep them clear of litter. Let’s aim to make the green infrastructure more ambitious with more trees, green roofs, living walls and rain-gardens which can help support Brighton’s fantastic Victorian sewage system cope better in times of high rainfall. Urban vegetation reduces air pollution and makes hot dry weather more bearable with shade and moisture. Individual living green roofs have appeared in Lynton Street and Hartington Road for bike shelters and to cover recycling bins. In future we could persuade more of the bus shelters, communal bike sheds and flat roof extensions to be living, breathing roofs which would also benefit our local wagtails, blackbirds and robins. Rain-gardens are part of the engineering solutions to deal with lots of water, known as sustainable drainage systems. Rain-gardens are fitted retrospectively into existing roads and designed to catch the human eye as well as slow surface water as it races downs

the hills following a dramatic downpour. Littlehampton has just completed the first Sussex rain-garden; could Elm Grove be next? Community support is required in order to persuade our beleaguered council that replacing our trees, or policies encouraging green roofs, is important and that residents and businesses will help for the greater good, and improving our environment benefits everyone. Greening Hanover is the next One Planet Living event where we have speakers from Organic Roofs (Lee Evans) and James Farrell from Building Green in Brighton & Hove, who will be able to inspire us to vegetate our homes, make our builders botanists, and the council perhaps move towards planning policies that are alive to the potential for creating a verdant urban greenscape. Fri 28 October, 6.30pm-8pm. ‘Greening’ our Urban Space, Public Meeting, Hanover Centre (Lower Hall).

A new way of buying food is coming to the Open Market.
The Food Assembly is a local initiative that brings people together to buy fresh food directly from local farmers and food makers. Every week Food Assembly customers in Brighton can order food online from local food producers before picking it up weekly at a local venue. All the food comes from an average distance of 28 miles, compared to the 600 miles with a supermarket.
Community is at the heart of The Food Assembly at the Open Market, it connects neighbours to farmers, neighbours to each other, and everyone to their food. By choosing to buy local, shoppers can support the community of Brighton, as for every £1 spent through Brighton Food Assembly, 90p stays in the local economy.
It also ensures your money reaches the right people; food producers keep over 80% of sales for every product sold, compared to 15%-25% through super-

News from the Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team...
Hanover & Elm Grove Local Action Team HEGLAT met on Monday 12th September at The Hanover as usual and topics covered ranged from communal bins to the parking consultation and public safety after the dreadful incident in Hanover Terrace when a young woman was raped in August. The police investigation team are following up on inquiries and have several witnesses who are helping them with this. A representative from Cityclean came to the meeting to field questions and a bullet-point list of issues has been compiled from this which the Chair will put into an email for Cityclean managers with a view to getting things resolved asap. The biggest issue was that of the communal and trade waste bins in Washington Street which are making life intolerable for residents who live close to their location, particularly at the Southover Street end. Attendees at the meeting were made aware of the distress caused by this and HEGLAT will be making representations to the council with regard to the matter. It was hoped that the first draft of the council’s design for the prospective CPZ parking plan would be available by the date of the meeting but this was not yet

complete. The working group are hoping to get first sight of this very soon and will be able to put plans into place for an active campaign of public meetings and exhibitions in order that all residents can see and comment on the plans, and so refine them to suit as many people as possible. It is hoped there will be specific meetings for the areas of Pankhurst; Elm Grove North (above The Patch); the Top Triangle of Carlyle, Lynton, Arnold, Baxter and Cromwell Streets; the area north of Elm Grove but below The Patch and along Lewes Road; and Hanover Central. There are specific concerns which need to be addressed for each area. We ask residents to remember that the consultation is for all and not just car/ vehicle owners. These are your streets and you can have your say. Timetable • September-November: detailed design process with public input • Early December 2016 to mid-January 2017: six weeks of public consultation • March 17: results of Consultation Report to ETS Committee • Further period of consultation around traffic orders (21 days) • Approval for Application of Traffic Orders - allowing final adjustment to scheme design and implementation by May.

A new series of community rights events...
Your community, your rights...
Have you seen some of the social spaces in your area disappear slowly? Do you want to do something about it?
On Thursday 15th September residents from different parts of Brighton met to share their experiences in using the community rights established in the Localism Act (2011).
There are 11 Assets of Community Value (ACVs) in Brighton & Hove listed by very passionate local people who want to protect the buildings and land that are valuable for their community. In your area, The Rose Hill Tavern, The Horse & Groom, The Independent and The Cuthbert are some of them. During the first event we discussed the very unique experiences that each group went through to list the ACV and what needs to change to make it easier for communities to use community rights. Some of the things mentioned were: “I feel like it is a very unequal piece of legislation. Some communities are resourceful, some are less resourceful.”
“I feel angry that it is so difficult for people in the community to be listened to.”
“Communities have the right to object for a piece of land or a building to stop it being treated as a commodity.”
The next FREE event will take place on Thursday 20th October from 7pm to 9pm at FIELD, Preston Barracks, Lewes Road, Brighton BN2 4GL.
The different groups are looking to create a network that supports communities to go through this process easily. We hope to see you there! Organised by: Let’s Co-organise and The Community Shares Company in partnership with FIELD.

Give your body a treat...
Holistic Treatments at New Dawn The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered: “Man: because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives like he is never going to die, yet dies having never really lived.”
We at New Dawn are offering, next to beauty treatments, holistic treatments, to bring balance back in your busy lifestyles. In holistic treatments we look at the person as a whole and acknowledge the physical self, the mental self and the emotional self. Our body can get affected on any of these levels and show symptoms when we suffer too long from physical, mental or emotional stress. You don’t have to have
any symptoms to benefit from a treatment. Think of your car, you don’t only take it to the garage when it breaks down - you have it serviced once a year. Why not service your body on a regular basis? Holistic treatments, whether it is a Yumeiho massage adjustment, Intuitive Bodywork, Abdominal Detox Massage, Colonic Hydrotherapy, Indian Head Massage, Hypnotherapy or Counselling, will create more awareness by being and feeling your body - something we forget to do during our busy lives. This awareness can make you take conscious decisions in your life regarding your body, your mental state and your emotions, creating more balance between your body and mind. This is what we have to offer for you and we are looking forward to introducing our new therapists. 103 Havelock Rd, Brighton BN1 6GL 01273 555592
Correction to Henry Butler interview in August
Henry Butler of Butler’s Wine Cellar has sent in the following correction to one of the answers in his interview: “I was genuinely always under the impression that my parents owned the Grand Gousier restaurant. It turns out that they did not; they owned the restaurant in the same building, before it became the Grand Gousier. I would like to formally apologise for this misinformation, it was an error on my part. I made an assumption that, as they were in the same building around the same time, this was the name of the restaurant.”
