A NEW TYPE OF DINER

We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.

Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.

Everything we have is completely free of gluten. That's right, everything. Even our house made sourdough, sweet bakes and our buttermilk pancakes. Our aim is excellence as standard. We make super food for super people.

Lewes Road Station

The Kemp Town railway was opened on 2nd August 1869, and soon afterwards an intermediate station serving the Lewes Road area was provided here. For many years it served as a feeder station for Brighton Central. The introduction of trams and, later, motor buses caused a decline in passenger traffic with the result that the line closed in December 1932, except for some goods traffic. The start of the Viaduct is visible at the end of the platform. Date of photo: 1947.

hanover hanover Meet Hanover’s new Community First Responder...

Community First Responder...

Hayley November

Hayley November lives in Islingword Street and is the new Hanover Community First Responder for the ambulance service. What is a Community First Responder (CFR)?

CFRs are volunteers, recruited by the Ambulance Service, to provide a first response to local emergency calls where either an extra pair of hands may be useful, or where our locality means we might be able to attend to an incident quicker than the first ambulance arriving on scene. We are not a replacement to the Ambulance Service - they will always attend any incident we are sent to - but responding in our neighbourhood means we can often arrive quickly, providing immediate first aid and reassuring patients and their relatives.

Why did you decide to volunteer?

I wanted to do something in my community at a local level that I could give time to around my work as much as possible. My family has also unfortunately had more than our fair share of the Brighton NHS’s time and skills with Crohn’s disease, melanoma and a paediatric heart disorder. I wanted to do whatever I could to ‘pay back’ for the fantastic service we’ve had. What training do you have?

The Ambulance Service provides us with all our training; there’s no previous experience required. We do an initial five-day training course covering all of the basics, we then do 50 hours of mentoring with experienced colleagues, we spend a shift out on the road with one of the full-time crews, and we attend monthly update training throughout our CFR career. What sort of calls will you deal with?

The Alexander Technique A gentle, self-care skill to improve balance & movement Relieve joint & muscular pain, stiffness & tension

Jeanette Philpott

MSTAT

www.positivepoise.co.uk positivepoisebrighton@gmail.com Phone 07500 750 240

I’m assigned jobs from the Ambulance Service’s Emergency Operating Centre; we can attend any 999 call that I’m nearer to, in my community, than an ambulance. Ahead, not instead. My role is to ‘protect and preserve’ until the paramedics arrive. Calls really vary, anything from cardiac arrests and heart attacks, breathing problems, trips and falls, strokes and seizures. However, as volunteers we’re not asked to go to high risk situations such as traffic accidents or patients under the influence of drugs. What is your day job?

I’m a writer, working from home or in London. I originate and develop TV dramas which isn’t as glamorous as it sounds - and I never write medical shows. For more information visit www.brightonresponders.org.uk

hanover hanover The Hanover charity coffee table photography book is now available...

Colour Matching is Catching After four years of colour-matching photo-sharing fun and following two successful calendars raising over £8,000 for charity Amaze, a charity coffee table photography book is now on sale. The hardback book, 230 by 180mm, costs £12 and has 60 colourful pages. The first 500 limited editions are available by emailing nickyb@amazesussex.org.uk Do you remember how Colour Matching started?

Nicky posted the new picture on Facebook with a challenge to the ‘creatives on the hill’ to find a better match. She was amazed by the response as her photo sparked an ongoing flurry of quirky and imaginative snaps.

Augustus is sadly no longer with us, but his owners are such good sports that they are featured on the front cover and in the book with their puppy Tiberius in a new colour match.

This book is in honour of Hanover, an ‘amazing’ community and vibrant place to live. The pictures are by local residents and are a celebration of the colourful people, pets, houses and of course the matching cars.

T !! H

The stakes were upped when Nicky met Augustus, a Harlequin Great Dane and local pet celebrity with his owners Chris and Christina. To their amusement Nicky’s spotty jacket was just like Augustus’s coat, so the pair posed for a photo next to a black car, outside a black and white house, of course.

S ID E N

On her way to work at Amaze, Nicky Bagilhole walked past the rainbow of Hanover homes and she spotted a cheery yellow mini outside a matching house. It reminded her of the Mr Men, so she shared a photo on Hanover’s Community Notice Board Facebook Group. Little did she know, but Nicky had started a colour match game and over the following months the wider community shared their own snaps of matching cars and houses.

A councillor report from Elaine Hills, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove...

Councillor News...Elaine Hills So what have the first few months of being a councillor taught me? Be it dealing with residents’ issues, attending committee and local group meetings, getting involved in campaigns, events or community clean-ups, a councillor’s work is never done! But it’s incredibly rewarding, and it’s great having the support of the two other Green councillors in the ward. So much has been happening, but here’s a snapshot of what I’ve been up to. Recycling: When canvassing before the election, what came up repeatedly on the doorstep was the city’s poor recycling. So one of my first acts after being elected was to ask the council to put a carton recycling bank at the bottom of Elm Grove. It took a while but eventually a new carton recycling bin arrived. My first victory for our residents! But I realise this is the tip of the iceberg on the recycling front. A year ago, 3,161 residents signed a petition calling on the council to widen the range of plastics collected on the doorstep. A Green

proposal to improve our recycling provision was subsequently passed, with support from the Conservatives. Since then, nothing’s happened. So at my first full council meeting in July I asked when the council would start collecting a wider range of plastics, other than just bottles. The response was disappointing: “It is currently not known when and whether other plastics will be collected” as it “would require considerable investment at the Materials Recovery Facility”. This is not good enough for Hanover and Elm Grove residents, and I’m continuing to look into ways that we can do better. Climate change teachers: I’m concerned that the urgent need to act to reduce the effects of the climate crisis is not taken seriously enough. Education often lies at the heart of change, so when I became aware of a UN-accredited climate change course that teachers can do for free, I decided to investigate and I even signed up to do it. I’m on the Children, Young People and Skills Committee, and put forward a proposal asking that the council works towards having a trained climate change lead teacher in every school. The proposal also asked the council to request that the Universities of Brighton and Sussex, as well as the MET, include the course as a module on their teaching courses. And it passed – my first victory for our city! The most amazing thing about being a councillor is being able to stand up for residents, so if you’d like me to do that for you, please drop me an email: Elaine.Hills@ brighton-hove.gov.uk

ng global heating?

ton and Hove or East Sussex? Did you know that across Brighton and ping to fund global heating by investing an estimated £172 million of d gas companies that are driving our current climate crisis – companies bon into the atmosphere, but it is also becoming increasingly clear it’s a very risky investment of people’s pension funds. The Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has warned that investors in fossil fuels face ‘potentially huge losses’ from climate change action that could make vast reserves of oil, coal and gas ‘literally unburnable’. The divestment campaign is gathering momentum around the world; the National Trust has recently committed to divesting its £1bn portfolio from fossil fuels in an attempt to help tackle the escalating climate crisis. Let’s ensure that locally our money isn’t being invested in unethical and ecologically destructive industries.

As David Attenborough has stated: “Every one of us has the power to make changes and make them now. Our wonderful natural world and the lives of our children and grandchildren, and all those who follow them, depend upon us doing so.”

Hanover Action has been an active community group working on sustainability in Hanover for ten years.

In recent times we have worked on tree planting, promoting bike racks for the area, a local seedling swap, showing environmental films, bringing neighbours together in the Zocalo and forming a partnership with Extinction Rebellion locally. We have recently had our AGM where we discussed what bold steps can be taken in Brighton and Hove to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

An exploration of 700 years of music...

Brighton Early Music Festival 2019 25th October to 10th November 2019 The 2019 programme for the Brighton Early Music Festival is all about change and changing times.

Taking ‘Metamorphosis’ as its theme, the festival, which focuses on music written before 1800, presents 35 events in 11 different venues across the city this autumn and winter, from a community ceilidh and music from Handel’s oratorios to medieval music with a trance-style light show. A key venue near Hanover is St Martin’s Church, Lewes Road, which will be hosting seven festival concerts. Headline events here include the first public performance in modern times of Antoine Brumel’s complete Lamentations for Good Friday (25 October); the music of J S Bach dynamically re-coloured on synthesizers in The Art of Moog (3 November); and medieval music by Hildegard of

News from Brighton Science…

Brighton Science at Half-Term WonderFest: Saturday October 26th, all day at Brighton Racecourse

Hands-On Half-Term: Sun Oct 27 to Sun Nov 3, workshops all day in central Brighton One thing is certain: after Brexit we’ll be needing to train home-grown scientists like never before, to fill the space left by our dearly departed European friends. This should provide a massive stimulus to home-grown scientists. But though schools do their best to teach STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), it isn’t going to happen if the parents aren’t interested. Contrariwise it will be given a huge boost if the parents get involved.

Parental engagement can take strange forms. At one of our Family Fun days I watched a big man enter the room with his two young children and survey the turmoil around him. Hove Park Upper School was heaving with a thousand mums, dads and kids, playing with 60 different kinds of science delight. In this particular room the challenge was to build a

Parental control

bridge across a 40cm gap strong enough to support as many Mars bars as possible, using only four sheets of paper.

Dad’s eyes lit up. He said, “Stand aside kids. This one’s for me.” For the next 15 minutes he was immersed in the task; his children on either side looked at him as if to say, “but… you’re a dad, not an engineer.”

As I watched I didn’t worry that the kids were being ignored. I knew that they were going to be engineers when they grew up. Why? Because as soon as they got a chance they would imitate Dad. Imitation is the key to career. What the parents enjoy, that’s what the kids will enjoy. Indeed, after a few minutes they were working on their own bridges, unprompted. Trust me on this; I’m a scientist. The evidence is there in every animal study: baby creatures, who plop onto the planet unable to tell good from bad – what works and what hurts - learn all this by watching the parents and doing the same. It’s actually automatic.

October 28th – November 1st 2019

Swarming over half term at the end of October will be a battalion of science communicators, eagerly engaging with an army of kids. We’ll be pointing them to some of the best science entertainment and workshops in Sussex, and we trust you’ll be there. Richard Robinson, www.brightonscience.com

Looking isn’t enough if your mind is elsewhere

Dance for Parkinson’s Brighton, a community-run dance group, has been awarded £5,270 in National Lottery funding. There are over 600 people with Parkinson’s in Brighton and Hove. Research has shown that dance can be very beneficial for people with Parkinson’s - it can improve motor skills, balance, cognitive difficulties, walking performance and mental health issues. A strong rhythmic tempo and imagery is used in the choreography of the class to provide external cueing that bypasses the neural pathways that are affected by Parkinson’s.

The class is run by two trained dance artists, supported by local volunteers. The volunteers also provide refreshments at the end of the class. Parkinson’s can be a cause of isolation so this social aspect of the class is extremely important. We meet weekly on Wednesdays at 11.30am at Dorset Gardens Methodist Church, Kemptown. We want to encourage more of the Parkinson’s community to join the class and enjoy the benefits it offers. For more information please contact: Annette: netty468@btinternet.com Lynn: 07939 040014
