Welcome to the September Edition of the Hanover Directory It has certainly been a mixed summer weatherwise. I have stood outside my house and measured 102 degrees during that heatwave early in July and I have also headed out for the day in a jacket and with a woolly hat in my pocket just in case as it was so chilly! It has certainly been predictably unpredictable in a truly British way! We have some good local content for you this month. Another local councillor is featured on page 9. We also have the normal articles from the Local Action Team, Hanover Action for Sustainable Living and the Hanover Community Association. We also feature again the community organisers on page 5. Have a great September!

You may well know these girls - your community organisers...
Your Community Organisers are Staying and They are Still Listening!
If you haven’t spoken to us yet, the good news is that we are staying for another year working in your area. My name is Valentina; I’m a Community Organiser for Hanover, Queen’s Park and Elm Grove. My role is to listen to what you love about living in the area, to what concerns you and the ideas you have to make it better. Last year I listened to around 500 people in your area and supported them to get together with other people to turn ideas into a reality. Some of the projects I have supported have been a history book club, Washington Street Foster Gardeners and The Cuthbert Community Buyout Group.
Some of the concerns I heard throughout the year were related to rubbish, parking and the tension between students and permanent residents caused by their different lifestyles.
Last year I was working for a national charity called Locality as part of the Government’s Community Organisers Programme. This year I’ll be working for Brighton Students’ Union; my role will still be to listen, support, animate and connect people in the community!

The last in a series of interviews with the local councillors in Hanover…
Meet Your Local Councillor: Dick Page Dick was elected in May as a Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove. Do you live in the Hanover area? Yes, in Southover Street since 1981. We are lucky to have a garden and not too many stairs; it has been a good home to bring up our children in, and now entertain grandchildren. They say moving house is one of life’s big upheavals, so I’m glad we’ve been able to stay put. It’s not essential as a councillor to live in the ward you serve, but it does mean you know firsthand how issues affect residents. What is your background? I qualified as a social worker in 1976, when they were really able to help people get through problems, and there was less form-filling or “checking up”. I worked mostly in social services in Sussex (part-time for 6 years when the children were little), moving in 2005: to work in carers’ centres, the Fed’s advice service for disabled people, and recently as an older people’s advocate with Age UK. I cancelled my professional registration when elected - no time for that now! How have you found your first few months as a councillor? It is satisfying to help solve residents’ problems, eg antisocial parking, noisy neighbours, poor CityClean service etc, but wider community issues take longer. I am currently trying to spread the word that our hourly 37B bus is at risk of having its funding cut, which would greatly affect the independence of many older and disabled residents on our hills. The Council wants comments during September. What do you hope to achieve in Hanover over the next four years? With steep Government cuts continuing, any improvements to our services and streets will realistically only
be achieved by all Councillors working together, really listening to residents and getting the best out of the system. If we can keep social care support going to those of our c. 2,000 elderly and disabled residents in need; improve the streets/parking, and refuse & recycling; and foster our strong community spirit, that would be a start! What are your interests outside politics? Music – I try and play the cello; cycling and gardening (not too much of either); keeping up with family and friends. How can people contact you? Dick.page@brighton-hove.gov.uk tel: 01273 291834 post: Kings House, Grand Avenue, Hove BN3 2LS; Twitter: @dicpagebrighton Monthly drop-in surgery: 10.15-11.15, 2nd Saturdays, Elm Grove School.

Here is the monthly update from Hanover Action for Sustainable Living...
This changes everything Capitalism vs the climate
Naomi Klein’s latest book ‘This Changes Everything’ is essential reading for anyone interested in making sense of where we are heading in terms of the nature and scale of climate issues and most crucially the prospects and possibilities of avoiding catastrophic climate change. The challenge
In short, Klein argues that the current trade rules that enforce free markets and current regulations that take little or no account of the damage to the world’s ecosystems arising from the pursuit of profit, allow us to hurtle towards irreversible climate damage and social turmoil. Obstacles
Besides the powerful interests of mighty fossil fuel companies, she suggests that an underpinning instrumental view of the planet as something to be used and exploited by science and technology (humans’ mastery over nature) is part responsible for our worsening plight. She suggests we could learn from other cultures that understand our involvement with nature as an interaction and have more respect for the natural world.
their products are doing to the world and the income raised used for investment in clean renewable energy production, most notably in the poorer countries of the world. The technology exists to do this; all that is needed is political will.
What is needed and how it can be achieved
Steps in the right direction
She argues that, despite the powerful interests of oil companies, there is hope. In the 19th century slavery was abolished and the huge vested interest of slave owners was overcome. The same could happen with fossil fuel companies. They should be taxed for the damage
Watch the film of the book with HASL
She surveys the prospects for change, concluding that we would be unwise to rely on enlightened entrepreneurs, or on governments to resist corporate pressures and do the right thing in climate rounds. These approaches have so far failed. 80% of fossil fuels need to stay in the ground. We need more public transport, locally produced food, and greater equality within and between nations.

Klein is positive about Germany, where a large amount of energy already comes from renewable sources, where cities have taken control of energy generation. She applauds the grassroots efforts of transition towns where people develop more sustainable ways of living. She draws hope from resistance in places like Balcombe where fracking has been stopped (or France where fracking is banned) and the achievements of indigenous people using land rights to resist and challenge mining and fracking. If you don’t get round to reading the book, it will be shown as a film by HASL in November.

Music and Wine at St Luke’s
Music and Wine at St Luke’s hosts two concerts this month.
On Friday 11th September violinist Charlotte Rowan will dazzle us with her compelling, commanding playing, accompanied by pianist Charlotte Stevenson. She will be performing an exciting variety of works from sparkling showpieces to spell-binding lyricism including music by Wieniawski, Elgar, Bach, Paganini, Bartok and Tartini’s ‘Devil’s Trill’ Sonata. Two weeks later on Friday 25th September we are happy to welcome back the Ireland trio. Following on from the success of their 2013 performance at St Luke’s, Ellie Blackshaw (violin), Peter Copley (cello) and Adam Swayne (piano) continue their exploration of Sussex music old and new. John Ireland’s beautiful and energetic Phantasie Trio will feature alongside new pieces by members of New Music Brighton, the largest composer collective in the UK. The composers themselves will present a short question/answer session before the concert at 7pm. All concerts start at 7.30pm. Wine and refreshments are served. Disabled access.
Tickets: £7 / £5 concessions / £3 under-12s available on the door. For more information, please visit www.stlukesconcerts.webeden.co.uk, musicandwineatstlukes@gmail.com 01273 510595. St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, BN2 9ZB The latest offering from Wine Woman...
Beating the Back to Work Blues So farewell then, British summer, as fleeting as the break in the football season.
As we pack away those ill-advised holiday shorts, dust off our suits and eagerly purchase our new pencil cases, it’s time to get back to the daily grind. But fear not. September is the perfect time for new wine beginnings. Time to leave the frivolous rosé on the shelf and embrace some earthier tastes. Pinot Noir with its heady notes of mushroom is perfect for this time of year and switching from the crisp dry Chardonnays of summer to richer, oakier, oilier wines a better match for the change in our seasonal cooking. Juicy Italian reds come into their own in autumn too - think Chianti, Negroamaro or Merlot. New World wines can also gently usher in the cooler days. Semillon is packed with fruit forward flavours and an off-dry Riesling partners well with richer and warmer foods. So this autumn, rather than signing up for that pottery class you will never go to, step out of your wine comfort zone. You may discover a new favourite which continues to delight long after the tan lines have faded. Charlotte Marples: www.thewinewoman.uk

hanover The latest musing of Hanover Dad...
Hanover Dad… Food for Thought
I’ve just got back from a lovely holiday in France. As usual, I’d made allowances for the extra expense that travelling with kids in the school holidays incurs, but what I hadn’t taken into account is how much my five and nine year old now eat!
This is how our days would start, “Dad, can we go to the bread shop?” – “Of course, what would you like?” – “We want some French bread and butter, and a croissant each and one of those pain au chocolate thingys, and we want to try those swirly pastry things with nuts on, but we’re only going to have one bite of that one to see if we like it, and if we don’t you can have it. Oh, and can we have some cereal while we’re waiting please? Thanks.” Then, roughly 15 seconds after said breakfast had been demolished, we got, “What’s for lunch, Dad? Can we go to the market? Oh hang on, can we go to that restaurant we saw? Oh no, I know, let’s have a barbecue with sausages and burgers, we’re really hungry.” It’s not just the quantity, but the variety of food I now need to pay out for, although I must take some responsibility for this. When the kids were little, my

lovely wife and I decided in a very smug way to make sure the kids liked a variety of food. So we insisted they tried daft things like oysters and mussels and sushi. How we laughed at their grimacing little faces, but now though, they love these things! My daughter regularly asks me for trays of sushi, and on holiday said, “I’ll just have a dozen oysters and steak please, Dad.” Seriously? I didn’t even try an oyster until I was 32. Why can’t you just share a margherita pizza with your brother?! Still, one good thing about the amount of food the kids have enjoyed is that my daughter has developed a great interest in it, and coincidently, just over five years ago in the same area of France, I decided that I had a great interest in writing an article about being a dad. Well, five years later Hanover Dad is still going, and my nine-year-old daughter has decided to start writing her own blog about food. It can be found at https://izzeats. wordpress.com . Have a read if you get a chance, and if you like it, then maybe you can buy her lunch as I’m a bit strapped for cash.

Our review this month takes us slightly off the track over the hill to the borders of Kemp Town to the Round Georges. Not too far to stroll on a summer’s evening across the park down to Bakers Bottom and still has the same feel as a ‘Hanover’ pub.
This pub always seems to have people outside the front and going inside has many floors, with a function room, an art gallery and a covered garden. It has a cosy feel in the bar area and lots of seating. We were there on a quiet night so had the pick of tables in quite an empty pub. All the staff were friendly and efficient.
The range on the pub menu was hard to choose from and specials were written up on a chalk board in the bar. There is a wide range of food with starters and mains all offering a vegetarian option and children’s meals were from an excellent price of £5.00 including that all important ice cream with sprinkles. The Gourmet Girls liked the fact that the food is locally sourced, prepared ‘using the best ingredients from around Sussex’.
The starters were great value and very tasty. The Tandoori whitebait was a great twist on a traditional starter which worked and the wonton duck delivered a taste explosion! The ‘melt in the mouth’ pork belly gave us all an insight as to how good the roasts must be on a Sunday. The veggie burger and chips delivered a tasty staple for a veggie on a pub menu. The food was beautifully presented and overall was really flavoursome. We all enjoyed our evening and left with full bellies and look forward to trotting back with our children for a family meal and to sample some scrummysounding desserts. Overall Gourmet Girls ratings: Food = 5 stars
Friendliness and atmosphere = 4.5 stars Value for money = 5 stars

Here is an opportunity to help vulnerable young people...
Barnardo’s Supported Lodgings More Hosts Needed
Could you offer more than a room? Earlier this year, we asked for people to provide lodgings and support for vulnerable young people aged 16 to 21. We have now managed to find and approve our first four host households, including one just off Elm Grove, and we have young people in placements who are working towards living independently, which is fantastic news. We also have a number of other people who have expressed an interest and/or started the assessment process. There is still a real need for more placements though. Most residents in Brighton & Hove are familiar with the lack of housing in the city. Whilst the majority of people find somewhere safe to live, the same can’t be said of some vulnerable young people. The children’s charity Barnardo’s and a number of Brighton residents are trying to prevent this from happening by finding new homes for young people at risk of living on the streets.
Olly Davidson, the Service Manager, said: “Brighton and Hove is full of generous-spirited people. We are pleased to be working with some of these people to offer a second chance to some young people who don’t have anywhere else to go.” The scheme was started at the end of 2014 alongside Brighton & Hove City Council, with the aim of supporting young people who may be homeless or leaving the care system. It offers supported lodgings to help them make a smooth transition to independent living. Eddie Miller, 78, a Brighton & Hove Supported Lodgings host, said: “I can see it’s a very good idea to have young care leavers staying with a family, so they can learn to budget, cook and live on their own.” Barnardo’s is looking for more volunteers to open their doors to vulnerable young people. The service is looking for individuals or families to provide a home for 16 to 21 year-olds, along with emotional care, practical advice and confidence building to boost self-sufficiency. Hosts will receive round-theclock assistance, a key worker, a training programme and an allowance of £150 per week. Lyn Lynch, also a host, said: “There are lots of expectations on this generation and not all of them are helpful. We can show these young people that they are important and they can have their own goals and don’t have to conform…and can make a difference in the world.” If you would like more information about becoming a Supported Lodgings host, contact Olly or Lauren on 01273 412010, email brightonlodgings@barnardos.org.uk or follow @bhovelodgings on Twitter.

The regular update from your local action team...
Update from the Hanover & Elm Grove Local Action Team It’s official; now we are working with the council to firm up the details and come up with the best possible proposal, based on the community proposals (see HEG LAT website for details). Montreal community efforts
Montreal Road residents are piloting a number of initiatives to improve community working. These include tool sharing, plant swap, Zocalo meetings; “welcome” letters and information to new residents and students as well as recognisable street-based car id disks. Concern over 37B bus service
Brighton & Hove Buses have begun a public consultation on the list of bus services they currently support. The 37B is on the list and under threat. For older less able-bodied people living in such a hilly area, the 37B is a lifeline. For more details and to have your say in the public consultation contact Richard Johnson in the Public Transport Team on 01273 292480 or email: transport.planning@brighton-hove.gov.uk

Optional extras include organising street parties and surveys, and acting as a point of contact for neighbours on HASL issues. We always welcome more people to become Street Contacts, especially north of Elm Grove. If you are interested, or have any questions about the core and optional roles involved, please contact Caitriona on ContactHASL@gmail.com

ROOF & FIREWALL Specialists Have you got damp in the corner of a bedroom or along the ceiling of an upstairs wall? Nine times out of ten it’s faulty lead flashings and firewalls causing these problems. The majority of Brighton homes are at least 100 years old and so are their firewalls. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.

hanover Here we feature a children’s book written by a Hanover resident...
Cat and Dog by Helen Oswald
Children will love this funny, original tale about an unlikely friendship by Toronto Terrace author, Helen Oswald. Tell us more about your book...
‘Cat and Dog’ is a picture book for children aged 2 to 6. It’s about accepting others even when they are a little bit different to you. Cat and Dog are good friends even though Cat sleeps in the day and Dog sleeps at night. Every evening they meet to enjoy their daily scrap. One day though, their happy scrapping turns into a big argument. They turn their backs - but soon they find they miss each other! The story follows their wacky attempts to make up. It’s lots of fun, and beautifully illustrated by Zoe Waring. How did you come up with the idea? One day, I was walking along the sea-front and I found myself watching how dogs on their walks made friends – or didn’t! I wondered what would happen if cats were added to the mix too…! Soon I was back at my writing desk and Cat and Dog started to emerge.
A little further beneath the story of the furry ‘frenemies’, are my brother Stephen and I, scrapping in the garden of our childhood home - one moment best friends, the next sworn enemies. Cat and Dog is about the push-pull of friendships: how our differences attract us but can also cause us to fall out, and how hard we find it to say ‘sorry’. The story explores these things in a fun, playful way. How long have you lived in Toronto Terrace? I moved to Brighton from London in 2001. First, I lived in Islingword Street then moved further up the hill about eight years ago.
BRIGHTON
What do you like about the area? Hanover is a village in a city. There’s a relaxed, happy-go-lucky feel about the place and I love that I bump into familiar faces everywhere I go. A PLATFORM FOR TALENT.
