A NEW TYPE OF DINER

We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.

Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.

Everything we have is completely free of gluten. That's right, everything. Even our house made sourdough, sweet bakes and our buttermilk pancakes. Our aim is excellence as standard. We make super food for super people.

hanover hanover Meet a local resident who’s raised a lot of money for Martlets hospice...

Local Person...Dan Hansen

Dan Hansen lives in the Hanover area and is a Neurological Research Nurse at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. He has recently raised £1,171 for Martlets hospice by tackling the Serpent Trail through the South Downs National Park. Tell us more about the Serpent Trail...

The Serpent Trail is a 64 mile long hiking trail through some stunning heathlands. It starts in Surrey, winds through Sussex and ends in Hampshire. It gets its name because the trail looks like a snake on a map but also because it is home to all three species of British snake (one of which I nearly trod on). Heathlands is now rarer than rainforest and the trail boasts uncommon landscapes as well as a host of wildlife. How did you get the idea for this challenge?

I wanted to do something positive on the anniversary of my dad’s death, and I wanted to raise some money for the Martlets who had looked after him so well. My

dad grew up in Zimbabwe but fell in love with the countryside of the South of England. It seemed fitting to hike through the landscape that he loved so much. How did it go?

Really well, despite raining quite apocalyptically on three out of the four days I was hiking! It was beautiful, peaceful and I saw a lot of wildlife up close including deer, snakes, lizards, birds of prey and rabbits. And only one blister by the end! What does a Neurological Research Nurse do? I run clinical trials in a range of neurological illnesses such as MS, motor neurone disease, epilepsy, dementia and more. Essentially I spend my time between treating people with new and experimental treatments for their conditions, and the vast amounts of organisation and paper work that comes with research. What do you like to do to relax?

I love to go walking; I personally find hiking 18 miles on a Saturday about the most relaxing way to spend a weekend. I have an allotment just a short walk from my flat which is a lovely place to unwind. I also used to be an illustrator and still like to draw when I have the time.

News from the council...

Council team begins

The council has begun an extensive weed removal prog already touring the city to remove weeds by hand and control technology. The council has been aware of the amount of weeds in the city, but has waited until the growth has developed before taking steps. The team has already cleared the Bristol Estate of weeds as well as deep cleaning the pavements, and has moved onto other areas in the city. A major step forward to becoming pesticidefree

Cllr Anne Pissaridou, chair of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) committee, said: “Stopping the use of glyphosate is a major step forward in making sure the city, its residents, wildlife and environment are all

s removing weed growth...

gramme after pledging to become a pesticide-free city. A team of eight will join existing staff who are d with tools as the council reduces the use of toxic herbicide glyphosate and explores new weed pesticide-free. It will always be the case that stopping the use of pesticides will mean more weeds, but this new team will control growth in the short-term while we investigate the use of new technologies including hot foam and infra-red technology.” Council taking expert advice

The council is working closely with the Brighton-based Pesticide Action Network, experts in how to become pesticide-free. A plan is being developed to end the use of the toxic weed killer in all the city’s parks, open spaces, pavements, verges and housing land within three years. Cllr Pissaridou added: “We have already started to reduce the amounts of glyphosate used in city parks, housing land and public highways. However, we believe we can accelerate the reduction in use.” The harmful effects of glyphosate

Glyphosate, commonly known by its original trade name Roundup, is a toxic herbicide and the world’s most widely sold weed killer. But many experts, including Pesticide Action Network and the Soil Association, believe it causes cancer in humans while destroying the environment and wildlife.

A report will go to the next ETS committee in October. In the meantime no glyphosate will be used in the city’s parks while the impact is monitored and alternative solutions are trialled.

Residents who would like excessive weeds removed from public land can contact Cityclean on 01273 292929 or email cityclean@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

hanover hanover The Friends of William Clarke Park are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Kemp Town branch line...

Choo Choo 150... Saturday 21st September, 5pm-10pm ,

William Clarke Park (‘The Patch’), Picton Street On 21st September Choo Choo 150, a free community event celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Kemp Town Branch Line, which opened in August 1869, will take place in The Patch.

The railway carried goods and passenger trains from Brighton station along a short 2km route, over the Lewes Road viaduct, along a deep cutting and through a 1km tunnel from Elm Grove, and under Carlisle Street, before emerging at Kemp Town Station, now the site of the Freshfield Industrial Estate.

Darren Clarke

The 150 Choo Choo event will include local bands playing bluesy and electronic locomotive tunes, an exhibition, slide-show and recorded spoken railway memories, and a train-themed procession along the route of the line. There will also be a bar and food. Entry is free (donations appreciated) and access is via Picton Street, Franklin Street and Hartington Rd. The last train - a special - ran in 1971. The viaduct was demolished in 1983 and the cutting, linking to the tunnel under Elm Grove, became a land-fill site which was grassed over and became known as ‘The Patch’ (or ‘The Dump’ by some). In 1994 the Patch was officially named ‘William Clarke Park’, after ‘Nobby’ Clarke, a Labour councillor and 1976 Mayor, who used to work on the railways, and had campaigned to turn the railway land into this recreational space.

The Friends of William Clarke Park group recently commissioned graffiti artist Ben Wilson to create a huge mural depicting a train on the line, to celebrate the anniversary and the vibrant park which now exists along its route. The co-chair of the Friends of William Clarke Park, Wook Hamilton, said: “Park users love its railway history, and we felt the 150th anniversary would be an ideal moment to celebrate this with a giant mural and community event.”

S ID E N

For such a short dead-end railway, it was extraordinarily ambitious and expensive. When first built, it ran through sheep-grazing fields, as most housing around Elm Grove did not appear until a generation or two later. In 1933 passenger trains were suspended due to competition from the more regular tram service. In 1943 the line was hit in a Nazi bombing raid, one of only three bombs to explode in the Hanover & Elm Grove area during the Second World War. Connie, who was seven at the time, had to move out of her Seville Street home (where she still lives) for six months, due to the damage caused.

A councillor report from David Gibson, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove...

Councillor News...David Gibson I am thankful that voters gave me the chance to represent Hanover again in the local elections. Across the city Greens got most votes but Labour ended up with one more councillor. Over 70% of the city voted Green or Labour and our manifestos were quite similar especially on housing and tackling the climate emergency. Whilst the official opposition, Greens have agreed to work together with Labour on housing and homelessness, on achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 and on opposing austerity. As housing spokesperson for the Greens, I have developed a joint programme with Labour which reflects both of our manifestos and am very excited to be able to get cracking on providing much needed new, more sustainable council houses, which can go a long way towards alleviating the homelessness crisis facing the city. After years of point-scoring oppositional politics, working together needs a new mindset for councillors and if it is to work well (and I hope it does) it will need to overcome the mistrust that has become entrenched amongst the parties in the past. I hope that Green and Labour councillors will

increasingly focus more on the shared outcomes for the city like 800 extra council houses, improving conditions for private renters and responding to the climate emergency and focus less on seeking to avoid the blame for what goes wrong and take the credit for achievements. More locally I have been • supporting the campaign to protect the Brighton General Hospital site as an asset for public benefit • working with the GoodGym to clear beds and paint over graffiti (see pics) • working with the Phoenix Community Association to embed a partnership to improve the estate. hanover A great annual opportunity to visit new places...

Heritage Open Days 2019...

It’s the 25th year of the Heritage Open Days festival - an opportunity to visit some places not ordinarily accessible, and everything is free, although some events must be booked. This year the festival runs for 10 days, from 13th to 22nd September, and the theme is “People Power” in recognition of the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre. There is a chance to view the stunning Feibusch Nativity mural at 1 St Wilfrid’s Flats, on the corner of Whippingham Road and Elm Grove, which is not normally open for public viewing. It was painted by German Jewish artist Hans Feibusch in 1939 in appreciation of the warm reception he received in Britain after fleeing Nazi Germany. The mural adorns three walls in what was a side chapel of the former Anglican church which is now sheltered housing. (Friday 13 September, 11am-1pm, no booking required) Dr Geoffrey Mead will be exploring the Valley Gardens conservation area in a guided walk – “Two Sides to Every Valley”. (Saturday 14 September, 1pm-2.45pm, meet at Brighton Museum entrance, no booking required; for last-minute updates, visit www.rth.org.uk/ BHOD19)

hanover hanover A neighbourhood survey on safety and crime...

Hanover & Elm Grove Communities Forum Tell us your views on how safe you feel

The Hanover and Elm Grove Communities Forum is seeking the views of local people in our community with regard to safety and crime. This is the first time a neighbourhood survey has been conducted on crime and community safety in the area. The findings will be shared with the council, other partners and the local police teams to help inform future plans and identify key priorities.

The forum has launched the Crime and Community Safety Survey in order to assess how safe people in the area feel, both in physical and online spaces. The survey, which takes just two minutes, asks a series of questions to find out the views and priorities of local people. If you’re a resident or work in the ward, we’d be very grateful if you could take part and tell us what you think. The greater the response, the more able we are to address your concerns and improve policing in our community. Paper copies of the survey will be available in pubs and cafés in the area in the coming weeks, or you can complete the survey online by going to: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HJ7PN9R Building a safer community

As a follow-up to this, the forum has organised Building a Safer Community, a public event in which safety and crime in the area will be discussed, and guest speakers will give talks and lead discussions on reducing crime within communities. The event will take place at the Hanover Community Centre on Saturday, 19 October, from 2-4pm. The results of the survey will

be made public at the meeting, and there will be opportunities for all community members to engage with speakers and ask questions regarding how we can improve the community so that everyone feels safe. Further information about the event will be available soon and we will provide an update in the next issue of the Hanover Directory. Get involved in improving our community

The Hanover and Elm Grove Communities Forum strives to forge closer ties between residents and groups within our community, with the aim of making our neighbourhood the best it can be. The forum meets monthly and encourages participation from all local community organisations. It is open to anyone living or working within the Hanover and Elm Grove ward. For more information, go to hanoverandelmgrove.net. If you’d like to become a member or supporter, please contact: hanoverandelmgrove@gmail.com

Join the climate strike

If you have children, you probably think of their future in terms of exam results, jobs, relationships and maybe even grandchildren. But increasingly our young people have much broader concerns – our over-heating world and the limited amount of time we have to address this. Youth climate strikers have turned things upside down, by ‘calling out’ adults for their lack of action . Youth climate striker M-J says: “We are concerned that the wealthiest people think we can have business as usual. We are concerned that our governments are not acting fast enough, that time is running out, and that action must happen now for the sake of those suffering now, and for our generation who will face the impacts in the future.”

So, here’s an opportunity for you to meet that challenge. School strikers are calling on everyone: young people, parents, workers, pensioners and all

BACK to SCHOOL...

Tarner Community Project offers a vibrant range of after school clubs and holiday play schemes for children aged 4-11 years. With OFSTED outstanding accreditation, the children benefit from a wide range of activities and the wonderful outside space of Tarner Park, where the project is based.Children are collected from school and then have an afternoon of activities including games, arts & crafts, sports, cooking, then end the day with a hot vegetarian 2 course meal. Spaces for this increasingly popular club are limited, so sign up soon to avoid disappointment.

2525 concerned humans, to join massive global climate strikes on September 20. People all over the world will use their power to stop “business as usual” and send a message to politicians. Young people hope this moment will show that they have the backing of millions of us who have a growing dread about the climate emergency but who have so far stayed mostly on the side-lines.

If you’re a parent or guardian, make it explicit that you allow your kids to go on strike, if they want to. If you’re an employer do the same. Lead others by example.

Of course, some people won’t be able to take a day off work, for all sorts of reasons. But that doesn’t have to stop you joining in with the protests – either by organising some solidarity action or training in your workplace, talking to your colleagues about your concerns about lack of government action, or taking time off in your lunch-break to go and show your support. Activate your own network in support of the climate strikes. Think of the organisations, clubs or faith

groups you belong to. Talk about the climate strikes at your next meeting; take to social media and share a public statement of support. Organise others for solidarity actions and events.

We need everyone - please don’t leave it to the young people. See www.hasl.org.uk and https:// globalclimatestrike.net/ Stop Press … Brighton and Hove City Council have agreed to a Car free day + support for school strikers and council employees to participate in 20 September general strike
